Walmart Connect: AI-Generated Ads to AI-Decided Winners

RETHINK RETAIL

Global retail media expansion hinges on balancing localized AI-generated creative with brand integrity. In this episode of the Global Lens podcast series, host Lavina Suthenthiran speaks with Nishanth Kadiyala (Walmart Connect) about how Walmart built an automated creative generation system handling nearly $1 billion in ad spend and how to scale generative AI across international borders. INSIDE THE EPISODE: - Creative was retail media's last automation holdout. While ad tech automated targeting, bidding, and attribution in seconds, creative production traditionally took weeks of manual reviews across designers, researchers, and policy checkers. This bottleneck is critical to solve as the IAB 2026 Outlook study projects commerce media spend to grow 12.1% this year, with two-thirds of buyers prioritizing agentic AI for campaign execution. - Scaling AI creative requires a non-negotiable rubric. To manage brand risk across endless product catalogs, Walmart aligned stakeholders around four core evaluation pillars: product truth, compliance and policy, brand voice, and visual aesthetics. - Rollouts must be sequenced by brand sophistication. Walmart launched its automated tool with long-tail marketplace sellers who prioritize raw performance first, using that volume to build its evaluation engine before expanding to mid-market brands and eventual Fortune 50 CPGs with strict national campaign guidelines. - Tech infrastructure travels across borders, but cultural nuance requires local expertise. When expanding its creative AI tools from the US to Mexico, Walmart found that 80% of the underlying tech guardrails transferred directly. However, because US consumer habits do not automatically generalize, the team trained local subject-matter experts to teach the AI regional language, culture, and shopper preferences. Listen above to learn how Walmart Connect built its automated creative generation system, how to manage AI-driven brand risk, and what retailers need in place before scaling generative AI globally.

Dave Rubinstein interviews Ilya Kabanov, a former Google AI security manager, about the disconnect between AI's rapid code generation and security measures. Kabanoff, who leads the Weather Report and is a research affiliate at MIT, discusses the significant progress AI has made in writing functional code, citing a 4x increase in security over a year. However, security checks cost five times more than code writing, posing economic challenges. Kabanov emphasizes the need for education, understanding AI's limitations, and prioritizing fundamental security practices to ensure secure AI-generated code.

I interviewed Daniel Ernst about The Great Orator on Sunday, August 31, 2025 at Venice Immersive in Venice, Italy. Here is the story synopsis for The Great Orator: "Once a famous TV preacher, the Great Orator died at the height of her fame. Now, her consciousness lives on as an AI, allowing her influence to grow ceaselessly. Her followers can join her again in a shared consciousness, feeding her presence and creating a spiritual singularity. Always changing, shaped by the shared memories of her followers, and therefore unsure of who she truly is. The Great Orator is a nonlinear story world, where the visitor can freely explore and interact with his environment by pointing his hands at objects in the world, no matter how small or ordinary they may seem. Remember: interaction is a choice. The journey will take the visitor to several story spaces in her world: a Preserved House she left behind; a Mainframe storing her followers in a shared consciousness; and an infinite Parking Lot stretching out below, filled with the cars of her followers. Without the visitor, the Great Orator is everything — an infinite number of possible memories and identities — and therefore nothing at all. He chooses which of her stories are true, shaping his own perception of who or what the Great Orator is or was, or if she existed at all. He is family to her, perhaps even more. Each time he visits, her stories are different; the Great Orator is never the same." Here are the contextual domains that are explored: Point and Click adventure [9] and cult [9] within a speculative future [9] where a powerful psychic [9] dies [8] and becomes immortal by uploading their consciousness into a computer [9]. Cult followers, also do this. So there are themes of the loss of individual identity [1] to join the collective [11] within this very specific set of belief systems [9] Here is the Elemental Center of Gravity: 1st Center of Gravity of Earth Element / Environmental and Embodied Presence: Environmental Storytelling and genre of VR Dioramas to create "perpetual environments around a specific emotional moment." Set in the distant future. Director calls audience: "Visitors who Visit" his work emphasizing the focus and emphasis on thesee virtual places. Uses post-modern architecture & liminality. A world to be explored in a sort of point and click adventure sort of way. You embodied as a ghostly aspirant ready to join the immortal spiritual cult.2nd Center of Gravity of Fire Element / Active Presence: Exploration, point and click adventure. Also learn about the objects3rd Center of Gravity of Air Element / Mental and Social Presence: Metadata around objects - AI Generated, collaborated with a poet -- Variations on poet's work - an "infinite" number of stories. There's also a bit of puzzling together of what this world is, and what exactly it is about. It's also a speculative, sci-fi world where conscisouness can be uploaded into computers. So what are the rules of this world? Big focus on liminal spaces and intermediate spaces that don't have explicit meaning absent a transitory context going from one place to another.4th Center of Gravity of Water Element / Emotional Presence: Not really narrative-driven. "I don't like to tell you a story. I like for you to visit the world, and the environments will tell a story." There are stories to be discovered, but much more ambient environmental storytelling. There is an AI that is scraping current news stories and injecting them into world, which gives it a bit of a surreal mirror on the current moment as it's set as more of a speculative world. There is also an ever changing quality that is amplified by the AI integrations adding a certain amount of variance. Archetypal Themes and Character Explored: Power is expanded until a "spiritual singularity". Dissolves identity into a bit of a collective identity by uploading consciousness into a computer (likely not even possible and so more of a delusion). Also alludes to delusionary aspects of psychics, who are taken to the logical extreme of Institutionalization. What if nothing can stop the guru believes in themselves? Artist Statement: "The Great Orator feeds on your interaction, mixed with random Internet input and live news feeds. She mixes truths and fabulations in her storytelling, thus reflecting the misinformation and normalisation of falsehoods used to fit our narratives in today's world. It feels as though reality is what you make of it, and feelings outweigh facts. Emotional and superstitious rhetoric — once the domain of mediums — now drives public discourse. Those once brought down by scandals now seem immune. The Great Orator imagines a world where such influence has grown without limit. Turn on the news to see where we are. Experience the Great Orator to see where we're headed." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wuknO0VzmmE This is a listener-supported podcast through the Voices of VR Patreon. Music: Fatality

Millions turn to social media every day for entertainment, advice and information - including health advice from artificially generated sources. Some of the videos appearing online were not created by real health experts, with plenty of content designed more around selling products over helping people answer their health questions. Misleading AI-generated health influencers are fake online personalities and computer-generated medical videos using deepfakes, fabricated doctor personas, and false product endorsements to sell unproven supplements. Naturopath and wellness expert Erin O'Hara explained further. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Is vibe coding quietly draining the thing that makes teams effective: their shared understanding? Margaret breaks down her new “triple debt” model, and why cognitive debt might be the one nobody's tracking. In this episode, Margaret-Anne Storey, co-author of the SPACE framework and a leading developer experience researcher, returns three years after her first appearance to unpack her new “triple debt” model. She explains how technical debt is now joined by cognitive debt, the erosion of shared understanding across a team, and intent debt, the loss of the “why” behind decisions that agents also lack.Drawing on her Startup Studio course, where student teams built MVPs in minutes only to lose track of their own architecture weeks later, she walks through what pushed her to name these problems. The conversation covers cognitive surrender, developer fatigue from managing swarms of agents, and the warning signs leaders should watch for on their teams.Margaret also introduces Cognitive Tours, a tool inspired by sailing waypoints and log books, and the idea of strategic friction: deliberately slowing down to preserve understanding. She closes by revisiting the SPACE framework and why its five dimensions still hold up even as AI changes every question we ask about them.Key topics discussed:Why cognitive debt has always existed, just never namedThe triple debt model: technical, cognitive, and intentCognitive surrender: accepting AI output without understandingWarning signs leaders should watch for on their teamsWhy the SPACE framework still holds up in the AI eraTimestamps:(00:00:00) Trailer & Intro(00:02:42) How Has AI Transformed Software Development Over the Past Three Years?(00:05:14) What Inspired the Research on Cognitive Debt and AI-Assisted Development?(00:11:28) Why Is Cognitive Debt Accelerating Even Though It Isn't a New Problem?(00:14:24) What Exactly Is the Triple Debt Model in Software Development?(00:17:36) How Does Intent Debt Relate to Context Engineering and Intent Drift?(00:21:57) Can AI Be Used to Solve the Cognitive Debt It Created?(00:26:55) Why Does Using AI Make Developers Feel Fatigued and Stressed?(00:31:33) How Are AI Agents Affecting Human Relationships in the Workplace?(00:34:37) What Exactly Is Cognitive Surrender and What Are Its Risks?(00:39:38) How Can Leaders Spot Growing Cognitive and Intent Debt Within Their Teams?(00:41:02) Why Is ‘Tokenmaxxing' a Dangerous Productivity Metric?(00:42:49) What Is the Cognitive Tours Tool and How Does It Address Cognitive and Intent Debt?(00:48:19) How Do You Envision the Daily Workflow of Using This New Tool?(00:50:16) What Is Strategic Friction and How Can It Help Developers?(00:55:10) What Is the Danger of Relying More on AI Agents and Less on Humans?(00:58:26) Does the SPACE Framework Still Hold Up in the Age of AI?(01:04:22) 3 Tech Lead Wisdom_____Margaret-Anne Storey's BioMargaret-Anne Storey is a professor of computer science at the University of Victoria and a Canada research chair in human and social aspects of software engineering. Generative AI is just about everywhere. That includes this year's St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase — in the form of a sci-fi short called “Anomaly” by writer and director Jack Snyder. Ahead of a ticketed July 25 town hall about Cinema St. Louis's future festival policy regarding AI submissions, Snyder discusses what prompted him to experiment with artificial intelligence and what the experience revealed about the realities of working with AI. He also drew parallels between current debates over AI in filmmaking and resistance to the mid-2000's move away from 35mm film to digital.

When something goes badly wrong, we investigate it. Reports are written. Recommendations are made. Lessons are identified. But do we actually learn them?Episode SummaryReturning to the show, Gill Kernick joins me to discuss the substantially revised second edition of her book about the Grenfell Tower disaster, following the publication of the Grenfell Inquiry's final report. Gill has a unique perspective on Grenfell. She lived on the 21st floor of the tower before moving out three years before the fire. Professionally, she has spent decades helping organisations in high-hazard industries understand leadership, safety and major accidents. When Gill first appeared on the podcast, the Inquiry was still underway. Seven years later, its conclusions have revealed an even more disturbing picture—not of one catastrophic mistake, but of systemic failure involving government, regulators, manufacturers, certification bodies and the construction industry. But this episode isn't just about Grenfell. It's about why organisations struggle to learn from failure, why compliance isn't the same as understanding, why we crave simple explanations for complex problems, and why genuine learning is much harder than writing another report. If you haven't already listened to Gill's previous appearances on the podcast, I'd strongly recommend doing so. Together, the conversations chart how understanding evolves as new evidence emerges. What you'll learn In this episode In a wide-ranging discussion, we explore:Why Gill decided to write a second edition after the Grenfell Inquiry concludedThe shocking scale of the systemic failures uncovered by the InquiryWhy disasters rarely have a single root causeThe hidden dangers of deregulation and "compliance theatre"Why organisations identify lessons but rarely learn themThe importance of understanding the spirit—not just the letter—of regulationWhy complexity requires different kinds of leadershipHow AI might help organisations learn lessons in real timeWhy hope is, as Gill puts it, "an act of resistance"AI-Generated.Timestamp Summary00:00 – Do we really learn lessons from disasters?02:45 – Gill's personal connection to Grenfell Tower05:15 – Why the second edition became necessary after the Inquiry 06:30 – The Inquiry's most shocking findings10:00 – When regulators knew the risks—but failed to act12:00 – Implicit trust and why we rely on systems we don't understand13:00 – Deregulation and the unintended consequences of political narratives17:00 – Compliance versus understanding the intent behind regulation20:00 – Why regulations struggle to keep pace with technology and complexity24:00 – Hope as an act of resistance 25:00 – Why we don't actually learn lessons 27:00 – Is a seven-year inquiry too long?33:00 – Why "post-Grenfell" reforms miss the real point37:00 – Communities of grief and change 39:00 – Why Gill rewrote the book instead of writing a new one44:00 – How the experience changed Gill's own thinking 50:00 – Speaking up in ways that actually get heard53:30 – Practical advice for learning in complex systems55:00 – "Lessons learning" instead of "lessons learned" 59:00 – Final reflectionsLinksGill's website, The Grenfell EnquirerHer book 'Catastrophe & Systemic Change'Gill's LinkedIn: Her previous show appearancesGill Kernick on the Grenfell Tower Disaster — Part OneGill Kernick on the Grenfell Tower Disaster — Part TwoTopics discussedGrenfell Tower Inquiry – Final ReportThe Grenfell Enquirer (articles and resources)Arup's Building Safety Change FrameworkPeople and ideas mentionedDave Snowden (Cognitive Edge)Cynefin Framework overviewBackground incidents referencedPiper Alpha disaster (Encyclopaedia Britannica)Lakanal House fire (Wikipedia)Deepwater Horizon oil spill (Encyclopaedia Britannica)

KMOX Media Expert Julie Smith says that actors are upset about a new movie that features 'Tilly'. Why the outrage? 'Tilly' is AI generated. 'The genie is out of the bottle,' says Smith. Julie joins Megan Lynch every Monday.

The Inventive Journey

AI-generated images are no longer a futuristic party trick. They are sitting inside marketing departments, startup pitch decks, agency workflows, website headers, product mockups, and social media calendars. The visuals are fast, cheap, and often surprisingly polished. They can also be legally awkward, because the phrase “the robot made it” does not automatically protect a business from copyright, trademark, trade secret, or publicity-rights problems. In this episode-style breakdown, we explore the question every founder, creator, and marketing team should ask before publishing AI visuals: can AI-generated images infringe intellectual property? The answer is yes, sometimes. An AI image may create copyright risk if it reproduces protected expression from an existing illustration, photo, character, poster, or design. It may create trademark risk if it looks too similar to a known logo, product package, mascot, icon, or brand identity. It may create trade secret risk if someone uploads confidential business information, invention drawings, customer files, unreleased screenshots, or private design concepts into a tool without checking the terms. It may also create publicity-rights risk if it imitates a real person in a commercial context. The episode also explains the ownership problem. In the United States, copyright generally requires human authorship. That means raw AI-generated output may not receive strong copyright protection unless a person contributed meaningful creative control through selection, editing, arrangement, or transformation. For businesses, that creates a strange situation: an AI image can be risky enough to trigger a claim, yet not human-authored enough to become a strong company asset. That is the robot art lawyer problem, and yes, it deserves its own tiny briefcase. We walk through practical steps businesses can take right now. Start by defining the use case. Internal brainstorming images are not the same as logos, paid ads, product packaging, investor materials, or website hero graphics. The more public and commercial the use, the more review it deserves.Next, avoid prompts that intentionally target protected material. Do not ask for famous characters, living artists' styles, competitor logos, celebrity lookalikes, branded packaging, sports team designs, or movie-scene replicas. Describe the visual qualities you want instead: clean, modern, playful, technical, blue-toned, founder-friendly, polished, or minimal. Let the robot understand the vibe without handing it a lawsuit starter kit.Review outputs before publication. Look for confusingly similar marks, recognizable characters, hidden logos, fake watermarks, copied-looking compositions, celebrity-like faces, and anything that seems too familiar. Reverse image search can help, but it is not perfect. Human review still matters. The discussion also covers confidential information. Trade secrets depend on reasonable secrecy efforts. Uploading unreleased product drawings, patent figures, client materials, or internal strategy files into an unapproved AI tool can weaken those efforts. The prompt box is not always a vault. Sometimes it is more like a very talented toaster with a memory. Finally, we talk about policy. Businesses do not need to panic, but they do need guardrails. Approved tools, banned prompt categories, confidentiality rules, documentation habits, human-editing requirements, and legal review triggers can make AI image use faster and safer. The robot can sketch. The humans should approve. This topic matters because AI creativity is not slowing down. The companies that win will not be the ones that ignore AI or the ones that let everyone prompt recklessly. The winners will use AI thoughtfully, document human creativity, clear brand-critical assets, and protect confidential information before it becomes a problem. To chat about this one-on-one, grab a free consult at strategymeeting.com

Episode 4157 │ June 24, 2026 America's moral collapse isn't coming from outside. The statistics from inside the church prove it. And AI just made it catastrophically worse. WHAT THIS EPISODE COVERS Scott Kesterson opens with a comment posted to the previous night's show blaming outside forces for America's moral collapse — and uses it as the entry point into a documented statistical case that the rot is not external but structural, embedded in the institutions the nation has trusted most. Drawing on the John Jay Report, the Guidepost Solutions SBC investigation, international clergy abuse data from France, Australia, and Germany, and cross-denominational Protestant surveys, Scott builds the case that the pattern across every denomination is identical — move the offender, silence the survivor, protect the brand — while the church's own pornography statistics reveal a congregation-wide crisis that 69% of church leaders acknowledge and 7% have any infrastructure to address. The episode closes with the emergence of AI-generated child sexual abuse material as the newest escalation pathway — self-coaching dark web communities building synthetic abuse content from children's social media images, an unbroken pipeline from consumption to normalization to contact offense, and a Supreme Court ruling already suggesting First Amendment protections may apply — while the church, the one institution with the moral authority to lead the response, remains largely silent. KEY QUESTIONS ADDRESSED  What do the documented statistics across Catholic, Southern Baptist, and Protestant denominations reveal about whether the church's child abuse crisis is an exception or a structural pattern — and why does decentralized church governance make the problem systematically worse? What is the escalation pathway from pornography normalization to AI-generated child sexual abuse material to contact offenses — and why does a Wisconsin Supreme Court ruling on First Amendment protections make the AI dimension nearly impossible to prosecute? What does Dostoevsky's warning about self-deception have to do with the comment blaming Muslim immigration for America's moral collapse — and why is the rot actually internal rather than imported?
