As we shift into a new genre, we're deploying turn-based tactics, lighting people on fire, fighting a war right after we fought a war, slaughtering a spineless worm, exposing a traumatized child to even worse trauma, throwing munitions into a furnace, making a pact for Muse, venturing into the forbidden cave, leveling up Touching Theme, looking for power, flashing back to our friendship's origins, peeping thomas, receiving the power runes, and cosigning our downfall. What games have we been playing? Lucky for you, we have a podcast for that! Kyle's been playing Persona 5 and tries to explain the story, the systems and the fact that the tutorial gives up around the 8-hour mark. Like a typical JRPG, the game fills up a lot of time with background tasks... Going to school, learning about things, hanging out with friends... It's quite a long process. Kyle and Simone are trying to get a hard achievement in Halo CE. Lee does not understand what the issue is. So Lee decides to put his mouth where him money is, and offer to carry the two to the achievement completetion. Can they do it? Does Lee even have this achievement? Lee's been playing Goat Simulator 3! And he was running around as a rhino with welly boots on. Now he's going around licking everyone to find out more about them. Not very hygenic, we must say. But the best thign about this game is that it "pays homage" to all the other games. Thats a polite way of saying rips off and makes fun of other games! And if you ever wondered about the background of Pentiment, well does Simone have you covered! From the setting to the history to everything around the game you could ever want. Does it make you want to play? Yes. Yes, it does. We're getting ready for our annual Game of The Year Awards show! And you're invited to contribute. How you ask? Just fill out this form with your answers and tell us all about your Games of The Year! Let's get HYPED! And you're welcome to jump into our Discord and chat about your nominations there too. Hey everyone. Sorry for the delay. We're back and we're recording again. But before that, we need to get this episode out there that we recorded months ago but never got to actually edit and put up. So here it is! We're talking about two classic children's franchises that were adapted to the Super NES. Actually, that's a lie. One of them is Super Widget, based on the cartoon Widget the World Watcher. Will this game be a pleasant surprise, or is it as forgettable as the cartoon on which it's based? But we're also talking about Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends. Perhaps a timely game given that we recorded it in the moments before that railroad strike almost happened. Was... timely... Maybe we should stop talking politics, we are really dating these things. Anyway, it's a game for very young children so of course two childless adults are the perfect people to review it. Finally, we're talking about The 7th Saga, a JRPG that doesn't get mentioned like other classic JRPGs on the system like Final Fantasy III or Chrono Trigger. Is there a reason it's not as beloved or is it something of a hidden gem? Listen and find out.
ETAO PODCAST, EPISODE 148. Robert Boyd takes our stage to talk about This Way Madness Lies, his studio’s new “Shakespeare-themed magical girl JRPG” (a thing that there ought to be more of). The game isn’t exactly faithful to its source material—but then, Shakespeare was never all that faithful to his, either. Frankly, we’ll take enthusiasm … Continue reading "Shakespearean Shōjo and Wholesome Horror, with Robert Boyd"

Kyle is having an aneurism. Maybe he should have sat this one out? It's getting to that part of the year where we're thinking about our Game Awards show. It's different because of course it is. I mean, have you heard this podcast? Are you ready to have your votes counted? Because we're going to create a form for you to fill in with your answers! Simone has finished up A Plauge Tale: Innocence and loves everything about this game! Apart from the rat noises. Those are creepy. We don't like them. And they even continue when in photo mode. There's just no escaping from the squeak. Lee has a review for us! He's ben playing The Chant, and there's plants with faces! And he even has a duck thing. What is this duck thing? We're not so sure ourselves... So there's a cult and then you go into a cave to rescue a boy. Any more and we'll be giving away the story. You'll just have to play it. Kyle and Simone are finally getting around to Halo 3 ODST and have thoughts. Is this really a Halo game, or is this something else? We can't decide. But the music is great and the main character is very sad. You never see his face, but his helmet does look quite sad. Trust us on this. Want to hear more about Persona 5 Royal? Kyle is 5 hours in and its crazy as. The cat summons Zoro. Thats not a typo. It really happens. How long will he stick with this JRPG, since its about 130 hours long...

The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero. Persona 5 Royal Review It's been years in the making, but did you ever see it coming? This week on the NXpress Nintendo Podcast, Cameron Daxon, Marc Kaliroff, and Campbell Gill are joined by Goomba Stomp contributing writer James Cook to discuss one of the most long-awaited, fan-requested titles to ever grace a Nintendo platform: Persona 5 Royal on Switch. Fans have clamored for Atlus's magnum opus to come to Switch for nearly as long as the console has been around, but now it's finally happened–and the best part is that the game is just as stylish, compelling, and addictive as ever. Get ready to have your heart stolen in this wide-ranging conversation about everything that makes Persona 5 Royal tick. From its incredibly stylish presentation, remarkable soundtrack, lovable characters, engaging story, and intuitive yet deep combat system, Persona 5 Royal has just about everything that a JRPG could ever hope for. Most importantly, it all holds up perfectly on Switch–if anything, the hybrid nature of the console makes this one of the best versions of the game yet. The hosts all agree on one thing: if you've not yet experienced it, there's never been a better time to wake up, get up, and get out there than with Persona 5 Royal on Switch. This episode also marks a major milestone for NXpress: this is the 100th episode since Marc, Cameron, and Campbell took over the show from the original hosts. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you to all our listeners for continuing to support the show over the past two years! Can't something be wrong, and priceless? On season four, part one's final episode, we're investigating bathing dynamics, pretending Sanchez isn't a rat, allowing Leknaat to lore dump all over us, wasting our only resurrection spell, sending monsters back to hell, executing Ain Gide, engaging in a rooftop showdown, accepting shame from former colleagues, suffering rune rejection, faking indoctrination, performing a murder/suicide, escaping the crumbling castle, reading every ending, creating expectations, diving into the lore, and fighting the power. Damn, this is the end. Hosted on Acast. This is no time to be distressed, we have a job to do. As we ingest the envy of angels, we're learning Mathiu and Humphrey were on opposite sides of a massacre, brewing our finest tea, preventing adults from having consensual sex, writing Hix off as a forever dumbass, wishing the old would die instead of the young, making 500 boats out of fucking ice, telling our dad's girlfriend why he's dead, tipping the oil pots too early, defiling a human being, listening to the plight of the betrayer, covering up a crime, and recruited yet another hater. I dislike myself intensely when I am fighting. As we experience classic RP Games, we're being infiltrated by a spy, realizing it's not just a drill, rejecting breakfast and surrender, failing an execution, contriving subterfuge, applying a ruse, invading a castle, resting on a guy, busting our boys out of jail, auto-joining man servants, calling upon the city states of Jowston, forcing Kasim into non-violence, utilizing a narcissist, citing Don Quixote's influence, and telling Mathiu his ideas are impossible. We've had a rough time getting here, and we're taking this stuff. Before that caper, we're romanticizing a studio apartment, wondering if sleeping poison is really poison, foreshadowing the third ingredient, locating the final blacksmith, shattering sentient crystals, obtaining moonlight weed, sorting through another Ted dilemma, fading from existence, picking a big flower, encountering a sober emperor, excommunicating from dragon club, wishing Krin was dead, and deciding exactly one rich guy is honorable. I never thought I'd run into a flower thief on a sleepless night. 00:00 Intro | 03:34 The Joshua Negotiation | 11:46 Seek Valley | 17:41 Ted & Windy | 25:55 Dragon Knight's Fortress Regroup | 27:07 Futch's Big Adventure | 31:21 Futch Fallout | 38:45 Krin & Kasumi | 40:24 Taggart | 44:18 Mace | 47:16 Real Net | 52:26 Outro Get more Retrograde Amnesia: Support us on Patreon at patreon.com/retroam. On this episode of Random Encounter, it's Random Book Club again! Here at RPGFan, we love our JRPGs: Tales, Trials, and everything in between. But to understand where the genre came from, we need to look back almost forty years to two legendary Japanese creators: Yuji Horii (Dragon Quest) and Hironobu Sakaguchi (Final Fantasy). In the recent JRPG history book, Fight, Magic, Items: The History of Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and the Rise of Japanese RPGs in the West, author Aidan Moher explores not just the origins of the genre but also how it evolved through the 20th and 21st centuries. This week, Jono and Hilary get the opportunity to interview Aidan about his new book, his own history with JRPGs, and where he thinks the video game book publishing industry will be going in the future!
