Rick is joined by Dave (Tales from the Backlog) to take an in-depth look at this marriage of Platinum Games's circumfluent battle style and Yoko Taro's philosophically-tinged narratives. NieR Automata is a game with two ideas at its core: existentialism (existence precedes essence); and the all-too-human penchant for "othering" those who are not in our in-group, often due to unwillingness to shift perspective. This episode covers up to learning the fate of the makers of the machines. Hope you love the show today. This week marks the 25th anniversary of the PlayStation 2's European launch. To celebrate, we played every (except that really long JRPG for obvious reasons) launch game and we're going to rank them in a tier list with D being absolute stinkers, and S being the cream of the crop. The games are:Aqua Aqua, Dynasty Warriors 2, Fantavision, FIFA 2001, Gradius III and IV, International Superstar Soccer, NHL 2001, Ready 2 Rumble Boxing: Round 2, Ridge Racer V, Silent Scope, Smuggler's Run, SSX, Tekken Tag Tournament, TimeSplitters, and Wild Wild Racing. Something for everyone, you surely agree! Are any of them good, though? We all know Wild Wil Racing is the drizzling shits, but can any game grab the sacred S tier?Come say hi @winnerisyoupod over on Twitter or BlueSky - tell us your favourite PS2 launch game, whydontcha? We're keeping the PS2 party going next episode with our individual top 10 games of all time. See you then!

Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we enjoy a bonus conversation capping our series on Portal. We talk Portal 2, the tension between story and gameplay, its length, and yes, even some co-op. And we do it all live on Twitch. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Much of SP, all of Co-op Issues covered: recording on video, our history with Portal 2, being surprised that Portal 2 was a thing, the Valve employee handbook release, wanting a different sequel, a long campaign with many puzzles and mechanics, following up a perfect game, not cashing in, adding mechanics and the puzzles that teach you, character development and delivering more lore perfectly, a miracle, the progression of the Cave Johnson story, worldbuilding conflicting with gameplay, breaking out with Wheatley, cognitive dissonance, seeing all the behind the scenes, being re-tested, potato GladOS, the magic of how narrative connects, the chicken and the egg, a successful length for the format, a whole Portal inside the penultimate chapter, embedding lore successfully, back-propagating story, sympathy for the devil (i.e. GladOS), 2 + 2 = 4, being drawn to the financially productive projects, killer app for VR, the loss of single player, VR problems for consumers, adding portals to their hero-based MOBA shooter, lack of narrative progression in the co-op campaign, co-op for the sake of co-op?, helping the player vs not helping the player, not aligning well for a controller, more portals plus more mechanics become untenable, doing the impossible alongside the possible, potential solutions for portal confusion, playtesting and confidence in your solutions, specific buttons, the doorway effect, shape language, police procedure vs police procedural, inspecting tires, bread and butter TV format, empty JRPG chests and meaningless clues, the salience problem, getting the reward as if you had the skills. Rick, Nomad (The Retro Wildlands) and Chris (Consoles and Stuff) charge into Chapter 3, which sees the game veer into a more traditional JRPG territory. Traditional isn't bad, though...although a few fights in this stretch of the game certainly are. More Lucavi, more Delita, more bad guys—this chapter has it all. Hope you love the show today. Do we care about the fate of the world? Hell no. We're only concerned with exploring the wasteland of the mind, imbibing the sweet nectar of the woman kind, conquering our greatest fears (again), escaping the maze of our wretched inner-selves, living in the body of a goddess, running out of unlimited time, correcting god, beholding the power of salvation, suffering a promo endurance round, perceiving decadence, rebuffing everyone after a one-hit death, getting stuck in the healing loop, and probably defeating the last boss. All you've ever done is dream of your great adventures. 00:00:00 We Finished Vagrant Story 00:01:23 Intro 00:04:20 Ships of Regret and Sleep 00:19:10 Xenobia 00:26:41 Final Battleground 00:38:49 Hero Lines 00:46:30 Last Boss Fight 00:56:18 Real Net 01:05:12 Outro Patreon: patreon.com/retroam Bluesky: @retrogradeamnesia.bsky.social YouTube: www.youtube.com/@RetrogradeAmnesia E-Mail: podcast@retrogradeamnesia.com Website: www.retrogradeamnesia.com

We're gonna be gonna be golden! This week on the show I am joined by Aaron Klaassen from Super Ghost and Chris Dominguez from Consoles and Stuff to talk about the GBA JRPG Golden Sun! I first got Golden Sun back in the early 2010s from a Game Stop near me and never touched it until my patrons voted for it for Backlog Month this year and I am so happy they did. Aaron, Chris and I had a ton of fun discussing the game's mechanics, visuals, music and much more! Does this game have a really fun and interesting battle system? Yes! Does it teach it to you at all? Barely! Find out all about it in this episode. Nemesis is awesome, but the gameplay gets under my skin and just sets 3 up to be the weakest of the trilogy, IMO.That doesn't mean Resident Evil 3 is a bad game. It's certainly no Resident Evil 6. I replayed it for the first time in years to get ready for this episode and actually like it a little more than I did on my first run. There's a lot to like here, it's just surrounded by frustrating and tedious combat.RTG's Nemesis, my pal Tyler, is my guest this week. I'm writing this before we talked so I don't actually know how he feels about this game. But I bet he likes it.And before we run from Nemesis, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week someone asks if I've changed my opinion on horror themed media? Where should a JRPG noob start? And which retro games needed trophies/achievements??Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! Even if you wanted to make this a twist, there's nowhere to twist. Before we twist it off, we're revealing the secret true identity of Laike, speaking of plot elements specifically, giving it a yank, turning into a dragon, realizing the Grindery is a Frontier machine, once again imagining a more socially conscious game, consuming sleep medication, debating the ideal final dungeon, leaving our fate in our hands, wishing Nash would behead a lady, overcoming the struggle of being human, eating Ghaleon's slop, and enduring another dream self-doubt realization sequence. Episode 2 of this year's Backlog Month features a game very different from last week's. Backlog month this year is RPG heavy and one of those RPGs we are looking at is Live A Live. Live A Live is an RPG from Square Enix that originally released back in 1994 for the Super Famicom but was later given a remake and published world wide in 2023. Joining to chat about the may lives experienced in this game is the Twitch streamer Happy Bear! Happy and I had a great conversation about our experiences with this game, why the battle system is pretty awesome, why the end of the game probably sucks and also the logisitics of farting in imperial China. Nothing can justify what he has done. Nothing except us reacting incorrectly, marrying a child, debating Ghaleon's power, exhibiting egregious Mega Man 4 opinions, decoding sunscreen, obeying out of fear and not respect, rescuing a puppy, giving up the drink, realizing Nash deserves nothing, joining in the madness, favoring self determination, referencing “new types,” streaming romantic rhetoric, killing god, trapping everyone in the good vs evil binary, and sacrificing, well, something. Althena gave us free health care and nothing else. 00:00:00 Super Sonic 00:01:40 Intro 00:02:59 Meribia, With Jessica & Mia 00:21:13 Gathering The Boys 00:30:03 Merbia, With Full Party 00:36:46 Black Rose Street, Full Party 00:38:05 Mel's Mansion, Full Party 00:40:22 Field Trip To Burg's Cliff 00:49:25 Transmigration Anime 00:58:48 Laike's Debrief 01:01:02 Real Net 01:03:23 Outro Patreon: patreon.com/retroam Bluesky: @retrogradeamnesia.bsky.social YouTube: www.youtube.com/@RetrogradeAmnesia E-Mail: podcast@retrogradeamnesia.com Website: www.retrogradeamnesia.com
Hey kids, weird day, huh? Days like this include human men delivering victory lines, jerking off after the massage, hacking through romance with a machete, losing the cut-scene, ditching the Vader outer wear, failing to keep up with the lore, forming the N.W.O., retiring the Dragon Master gear, sleeping for three days, distinguishing pudding from a smoothie, recognizing Negative Attitude Man, suspecting Eternal Blue is much better, voluntarily contracting rabies, and drinking away our problems.
