It all seemed too plain, too simple, too lacking in complexity, and while a part of me was relieved to suddenly have less "homework" to do as I'm forever catching up on RPGs that I missed, part of me felt an ever-present need to "get it". Yada yada yada, I finally had another reason to try Dragon Quest, starting with Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride on DS, and folks....I get it now. Tune in to find out how I got there.

On this retrospective review, I discuss the somewhat forgotten games Koudleka and Shadow Hearts, a series of horror role-playing games in the Japanese fashion. Deeply themed with loss, tragedy, hope, Japanese and European themes, Lovecraftian monsters and the time honored trope of kicking a god in the face, this is a series that deserved more love than it got. Stop by for a listen and relive a set of cult classics - or maybe get introduced to the for the first time!
Resident Evil changed everything. When originally released in 1996, what was once a niche genre for enthusiasts was now a blockbuster staple in every second home. All of a sudden people were craving zombies, horrifying monsters and disturbing themes. It was so popular that Square, far more known for its more traditional JRPGs, decided to throw its hat in the ring and make Parasite Eve.On the surface, the game appeared to be textbook survival horror. But dig a little deeper and you could see that Square was unable to escape its roots. Turn based mode happened in a sphere similar to Vagrant Story, upgrades were plentiful and incremental, and the storytelling had more cutscenes than gameplay at least in the early stages. Thematically this was still horrifying…but under the hood was a different story. Was this blend of genres ultimately successful, giving survival horror a fresh new perspective? Or is it impossible to reconcile grim resources management with the power fantasy that RPGS almost always offer? On this episode, we discuss:StoryHow does Parasite Eve use real world science to lend an air of credibility to the horrific changes that are happening all over Manhattan? Does it execute the smaller details well even if the larger picture is a bit silly at times?CombatHow enjoyable is the moment to moment real time combat of Parasite Eve? The game requires you to dodge attacks, and pick the best moment to strike. Is this too simplistic or does it work well?ProgressionHow do the weapon and armour upgrades work in Parasite Eve? Does it provide the player with a satisfying sense of progression, or is it all just a confusing mess?We answer these questions and many more on the 132nd episode of the Retro Spectives Podcast!—Intro Music: KieLoBot - Tanzen KOutro Music: Rockit Maxx - One point to anotherParasite Eve OST: Yoko Shinomura—What crazy weapon upgrade paths do you like to use? Is the NG+ mode worth playing? How is Parasite Eve 2 different from the original? We get deep into the plot of this large JRPG political election story, its metatextual commentaries (or lack thereof) on 16th century English authors, and its intertwining of Medieval royal succession and liberal democracy.

The OG he idolizes: the stoic, sincere, and legendary monster-taming Hero from Dragon Quest V.It's a clash of generations: modern RPG chaos versus classic RPG fundamentals! To break down this epic encounter, John and Dean are joined by two legendary guests!First up, from "Gaming Together: A Cooperative Podcast," Nave is here to analyze the party dynamics and the sheer absurdity of Ichiban's Poundmates. And bringing his own brand of stoicism, Zack from the DynaMic Network's own "Senjoh World" is in the house to be the Hero we all wished we could be! Who wins when the fanboy fights his idol? Can a baseball bat and a wild imagination defeat a hero with legendary gear and slew of spells?Tune in as we blend spirited debate, deep-dive analysis, and a whole lot of laughs to settle the score. Get out there and level up, Kombatants!

The Rushdown crew is back with another week of gaming chaos, and boy, is it a mess. GTA VI just dropped its second trailer, and the internet is already dissecting every frame—will it actually hit that 2025 release date? Meanwhile, Palworld is in legal hell as a lawsuit forces the devs to remove gliding and ball-throwing mechanics (so… is it even Palworld anymore?).Nintendo's latest baffling decision? Switch voice chat now requires a phone number—because nothing says "fun online gaming" like giving Big N your digits. Over at Square Enix, things are dire: they've announced no new games until 2027, meaning we're stuck with Final Fantasy XIV expansions and copium for years. In corporate villainy news:SAG-AFTRA is coming for Epic Games after an AI Darth Vader allegedly screwed over voice actors.Bungie got caught stealing art for Marathon—because nothing says "live-service revival" like a side of plagiarism. And of course, Randy Pitchford opens his mouth AGAIN, because why wouldn't he?Tune in for the drama, deep dives, and dumb takes on another wild week in gaming!
