What's up pixel perverts? Today we're blighting the surface for undesirables, rapidly switching discs, realizing the guards can hit, scraping metal out of the dirt, locating the only doctor in the world, experiencing goblin poetry, refusing to serve drinks to miners, dreaming of D Block, goofing into a slur, beating the prisoners, staring down a moral choice, changing hearts and minds, rushing the goblin narrative, playing with piss, and producing an unforgivable font mistake. On this week's Random Encounter, let's head to the bazaar and see what the RPGFan stall has in stock!First up, Niki is here to chat about Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar. Harvest Moon DS: Grand Bazaar was a beloved entry in this long-running series on the Nintendo DS. Does this remake (with some updated branding) live up to the memories of the original? Then, Neal is here to share his thoughts about Quartet, a new retro-style JRPG from the developer of Shadows of Adam. While it looks like a pretty standard SNES JRPG on the surface, it is the mature storytelling and more modern mechanics that set it apart. If you miss the days of the SNES, this might be an RPG you'll want to check out!And finally, the entire panel shares what they are most excited about that was announced at Gamescom 2025!Featuring: Jono Logan, Neal Chandran, and Niki Fakhoori; Edited by Jono LoganGet in Touch:RPGFan.comRPGFan ShopEmail us: podcast@rpgfan.comTwitter: @rpgfancomBluesky: @rpgfan.bsky.socialInstagram: @rpgfancomThreads: @rpgfancomFacebook: rpgfancomTwitch: rpgfancomThis Episode's Related Links:Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar ReviewHarvest Moon DS: Grand Bazaar ReviewQuartet ReviewShadows of Adam Review
"It will only cost you your life, and you got that for free!" A notable cult classic, an idiosyncratic game, a commercial failure and a fan favourite. Landing at a formative time for the JRPG genre in the west, EarthBound (Mother 2: G?gu no Gyakush? / Giygas Strikes Back) loomed very large over the gaming landscape sliding between Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger, two of SquareSoft's biggest hitters from a relatively unknown studio. Join host Rich with Jon, Leah and guest Eddie Inzauto of the Smashing Bricks Podcast as we get to the bottom of this beloved title, from its peculiar launch, divisive marketing campaign, and underwhelming sales to what has become a darling title for Nintendo and SNES fans. http://media.blubrry.com/caneandrinse/caneandrinse.com/podcast/cane_and_rinse_issue_679.mp3 Music featured in this issue: 1. Oh man, you can't escape from Final Fantasy content these days, can you? It's everywhere! Andy is FF-Curious though and wants to know more. So, he asked his good friend Chris to take him through one of them. You know, to see what was cool. Chris chooses Final Fantasy 7. It's Chris's favorite from the series. Let's listen together to Chris' dubious FF7 claims. We talked about more Final Fantasy through the lens of its recent Magic the Gathering release, over on Andy's other podcast. We're getting a beefy-ass lore bomb in these chapters thanks to our new witch friends Schierke and her mistress Flora! What is the astral realm...the interstice...the Godhand...and the nature of Griffith's newly reincarnated powers? All of this is discussed in semi-mindbending detail - plus, Guts's JRPG party gets kitted out with magical weapons and armor for the journey to take out horrific trolls for Morgan, the boring NPC from the previous episode. On this week's Random Encounter, we're discussing a mobile-based gacha spinoff of a beloved JRPG and a Wii U classic that has finally made its way to a modern console!Persona 5 has more than its share of spinoffs, including Persona 5 Royal, Persona 5 Strikers, Persona 5: Dancing in Starlight, and Persona 5 Tactica, and now there is a new game to add to the list: Persona 5: The Phantom X. This mobile and PC game is a full-fledged JRPG, but one with dozens of gacha mechanics in the way of a smooth gameplay experience. Was Audra able to get over these revenue traps to enjoy the solid game beneath? And then Ben is here to talk about the first 100 in RPGFan history: Xenoblade Chronicles X! This classic JRPG was released on the Wii U, where no one really played it (but to be fair, no one really played the Wii U either). But now it's available on the Nintendo Switch, so no one has an excuse not to play this spectacular early entry in the long-running, beloved Xenoblade series!

On this retrospective review, I discuss the somewhat forgotten games Koudleka and Shadow Hearts, a series of horror role-playing games in the Japanese fashion. Deeply themed with loss, tragedy, hope, Japanese and European themes, Lovecraftian monsters and the time honored trope of kicking a god in the face, this is a series that deserved more love than it got. Stop by for a listen and relive a set of cult classics - or maybe get introduced to the for the first time!
Resident Evil changed everything. When originally released in 1996, what was once a niche genre for enthusiasts was now a blockbuster staple in every second home. All of a sudden people were craving zombies, horrifying monsters and disturbing themes. It was so popular that Square, far more known for its more traditional JRPGs, decided to throw its hat in the ring and make Parasite Eve.On the surface, the game appeared to be textbook survival horror. But dig a little deeper and you could see that Square was unable to escape its roots. Turn based mode happened in a sphere similar to Vagrant Story, upgrades were plentiful and incremental, and the storytelling had more cutscenes than gameplay at least in the early stages. Thematically this was still horrifying…but under the hood was a different story. Was this blend of genres ultimately successful, giving survival horror a fresh new perspective? Or is it impossible to reconcile grim resources management with the power fantasy that RPGS almost always offer? On this episode, we discuss:StoryHow does Parasite Eve use real world science to lend an air of credibility to the horrific changes that are happening all over Manhattan? Does it execute the smaller details well even if the larger picture is a bit silly at times?CombatHow enjoyable is the moment to moment real time combat of Parasite Eve? The game requires you to dodge attacks, and pick the best moment to strike. Is this too simplistic or does it work well?ProgressionHow do the weapon and armour upgrades work in Parasite Eve? Does it provide the player with a satisfying sense of progression, or is it all just a confusing mess?We answer these questions and many more on the 132nd episode of the Retro Spectives Podcast!—Intro Music: KieLoBot - Tanzen KOutro Music: Rockit Maxx - One point to anotherParasite Eve OST: Yoko Shinomura—What crazy weapon upgrade paths do you like to use? After seven long years, DT!HQ finally landed at home in Columbus for a LIVE episode! The kind folks from ANIMATE! Columbus invited us to perform our humble podcast in their Social Club. Well we kicked down the door of that Social Club to ask the daring question: which IRL job would make the best subject matter for a JRPG? Andrew is talking about consultants and it's going to make you sad. Todd is talking about tech support and it's going to make you a different kind of sad. Kyle was there with us in spirit, but spirits don't exist in live podcasts. Recommended reading: You can find the PowerPoint at the following link. What's up, Kombatants? This week on "Konsole Kombat," we're staging a battle for the very soul of the JRPG! In one corner, the headstrong, optimistic, and slightly delusional hero of Yakuza: Like a Dragon, Ichiban Kasuga! He thinks life is a video game, complete with turn-based battles and over-the-top special moves. In the other corner? The OG he idolizes: the stoic, sincere, and legendary monster-taming Hero from Dragon Quest V.It's a clash of generations: modern RPG chaos versus classic RPG fundamentals! To break down this epic encounter, John and Dean are joined by two legendary guests!First up, from "Gaming Together: A Cooperative Podcast," Nave is here to analyze the party dynamics and the sheer absurdity of Ichiban's Poundmates. And bringing his own brand of stoicism, Zack from the DynaMic Network's own "Senjoh World" is in the house to be the Hero we all wished we could be! Who wins when the fanboy fights his idol? Can a baseball bat and a wild imagination defeat a hero with legendary gear and slew of spells?Tune in as we blend spirited debate, deep-dive analysis, and a whole lot of laughs to settle the score. Get out there and level up, Kombatants!
