This episode of Indieventure Extra is a long-awaited reunion between Liam and Ed Thorn, reviews editor at PC-focused website Rock Paper Shotgun (we've never heard of it). Ed discusses his history with games, how he became a games journalist and the challenges of balancing indie game coverage alongside more financially stable AAA content. The pair also chat about what makes a good video game review, Ed reveals his favourite indie from 2024, and there is a 5-minute section where the phrase "Beast Mode" is uttered about 45 times. It makes sense in context. Sort of. You can find Ed's good words over at Rock Paper Shotgun. Here are the Redfall and Sonic Frontiers videos mentioned in the episode. Inventory Space only lasted two episodes, but it's still worth a watch. Enjoy! Our music was written and performed by Ollie Newbury! Find him on Instagram at @newbsmusic. Meanwhile, you can find us at indieventurepodcast.co.uk or wherever you listen to podcasts.
Sony kills two studios this week. Ubisoft launched that NFT game. Path of Exile 2 gets pushed a few weeks. Games preservation got road blocked. Red Dead 1 is out now. Atari VCS is cheap for a minute. Redfall's downfall might be different than you think. All the halloween sales are happening. Dear Martha! Dragon Age thoughts, though VERY early. Games we played, and your texts and emails! In today's Daily Fix:News broke yesterday that the staff of Annapurna's gaming division has resigned. According to Bloomberg, the resignations were over Annapurna Interactive's negotiations with founder Megan Ellison regarding the company spinning off into its own. Parent company Annapurna Pictures is a media company that also produces film and television. The gaming division is a publishing house that has published several hit games, including Stray and Outer Wilds. According to Ellison, all existing contracts to publish upcoming games will still be honored. In other news, Palworld developer Pocketpair is considering taking its hit survival/monster raising game free-to-play. The game currently sells for around $30 USD on Windows and Xbox (and also available via Xbox Game Pass), but could follow a free-to-play model. This follows several high-profile live-service game flops including Sony's Concord and Xbox Game Studios' Redfall, both of which required to be purchased in addition to microtransactions. And finally, the PS5 Pro edition could be a surprise hit, despite its high price. This conjecture is based on recent sales of the PS5 disc drive attachment—originally meant for the PS5 Slim model, but confirmed to work with the Pro edition. Apparently the attachment is sold out on Amazon and stock is reportedly running low on other retailers like Best Buy.

The next major release in Xbox's first party family has arrived! Senua's Saga: Hellblade II has seen an increased amount of pressure placed upon it as concern for the platform holder as ramped up. Stripping ourselves from the heightened emotionality of that situation, how does over five years of development, a team size four times bigger than the original, and a big Microsoft check benefit the newest entry in the Hellblade series? The Dukes are joined by Gene Park where all three were able to play through the game a week ahead of its launch and let their thoughts marinate. Sitting at an 82 on OpenCritic, Hellblade 2 is off to a solid start, but where do the Dukes sit? Well, it's time to dig deep and find out! We talk about the possible reasons why there's a discrepancy, what makes the PS5 different from Playstations before it, and how it's all potentially having a trickle down effect on the industry that we are seeing now.
