This week we are waiting on a flight in some Mid-Major airport. A nice liminal space to relax or sleep with. 10 hours of airport sounds including muffled announcements, large room air-conditioning, timely takeoffs, airport denizens, and drift.______We're waiting for a late-night flight to somewhere awesome, tucked into a dark corner with a view of the runway fading into the milky darkness beyond. Vehicle lights twinkle. The runway blazes with multicolored bulbs. And my favorite person, the waving double-flashlight dude (I always wondered if these folks ever pretended to be Jedis). Planes speed down the runway in the distance, like racing Christmas trees.In the 90s I had the perfect spot at Atlanta airport near my favorite eatery, Gyro Wrap (you fostered my love of the gyro, thank you Gyro Wrap). I loved watching the nighttime choreography of massive flying machines and service vehicles while awaiting that late connection to Columbia, SC, and back to my military school bunk by midnight. One trip nearly ended with me joining the Army by accident. A very stern-looking dude from the U.S. Army (reception cadre) double timed over to me as I headed for the Taxi stand of the Columbia Airport. “No gum. The hell are you chewing gum for? Take those headphones off when I'm speaking to you.”I'm like, “Uhm.”He starts laying into my posture. I wasn't standing straight. Gum out right now. Hand outstretched to a line of people in the distance. “Eyes straight. Let's go.” And I see a line of dudes rigid with fear. “You made all of us late—“I jumped in, “sir, I'm sorry, I didn't join the Army. I'm in military school. I have to catch a cab.”His eyes widened at my interruption, then his expression softened into something much friendlier—even jocular. “Ya—! Ooooh… I was about to put you on the bus.”He asked how long I had been in military school and I was like, “Six years.”“Six years? Do they not teach posture? Chest up, shoulders back…” And he clapped me on the back, "See you in a few months."I wanted to do add a "sorry but I will be attending another military school in a few months." But he was back to his charges telling them the wait would continue.Speaking of airport nostalgia, this week's episode cover is a homage to the stellar Catch Me If You Can opening credits. Which is itself a nostalgic, Saul Bass–ish 1960s film opening. I've never seen Catch Me If You Can, but the credit sequence was formative in inspiring where I wanted to take my career. I should leave out that my mantra became “I will only work on documentaries or major motion picture credit sequences” (and whatever job I could get at MTV, I'll mop the TRL studios).The Catch Me If You Can credit sequence by Kuntzel + Deygas is unassailable. And middling designers (such as myself) will make any excuse to play with others' wonderful work and call it homage. (See my recent Matrix episode for more).I mean, it is self-gratification. Can I say that? And leave aside the vulgar common understanding—it would be like my buying a home-run baseball on eBay. Some other person caught the ball, or ripped it from a child's hands, put it in a box, slapped on some stamps, and shipped it across multiple states. Now I'm holding up that baseball as if I accomplished something.Then again, it was fun to make.

Germain Lussier of Gizmodo joins Dave Weekley with early impressions of Steven Spielberg's Disclosure Day, which Lussier calls his favorite Spielberg film since Catch Me If You Can — a stretch of more than 20 years. Calling it an emotionally rich blend of ET and Close Encounters with more intensity and action than either, Lussier describes the film as a paranoia thriller with a genuine spirit of wonder, anchored by what he predicts will become an all-time great character performance from Emily Blunt. He cautions that marketing has been underwhelming and the film may not become a massive blockbuster, but argues it has the depth and originality to stay with audiences long after they leave the theater. The review embargo lifts June 9th, with the film drawing international attention from Lussier's early social media reactions.

Most of us know choreography affects our dancers scores, but few of us dance parents understand the how and why. Today we brought on Pulse Dance Studio owner, dancer, choreographer, and competition Judge, Jennifer Olsen, to help explain to us the relationship between choreography and your dancer's scores! ABOUT JENNIFER: Jennifer started studying dance at the age of 3 in Pennsylvania.  She has been extensively trained and is proficient in many forms of dance including tap, jazz, ballet, lyrical, contemporary, hip hop, musical theatre and ballroom.  Her first taste of love for live theatre was her junior year of high school where she performed at The Fulton Opera House in Lancaster, PA.  After high school Jennifer started traveling as a spokesmodel for Infiniti Automotive Company for 9 years as well as was a on air guest on QVC.  After traveling she brought her love of dance and the arts back home where she opened her own studio in 2008.  She has nurtured and grown her studio for the past 18 years helping her students to be successful dancers and aide them in achieving their goals.  It has always filled her heart to watch her dancers grow as dancers and as humans.  She has always taught them that to win many awards, accolades, and scholarships along the way is icing on the cake, but they don't define you.  Jennifer has also won many choreography awards from various dance competitions around the east coast.  Most recently she has choreographed Jesus Christ Superstar for Millersville University and has traveled as far as St. Croix, to give master classes to students of all ages and abilities.  Her performing credits include West Side Story, Hello Dolly, Catch Me If You Can, Holiday Treasures, and Future Vision.  Her most prized accomplishment is working with her students inside her studio.  Jennifer feels to build relationships both on and off the dance floor is the most rewarding thing as a teacher and studio owner.  To know that dancers you work with will carry a piece of you with them is her biggest award ever given.  LINKSPulse Dance Studio   Pulse on instagram EPISODE SPONSORSDream Duffel, the original rolling duffel with a built in garment rack! Counterfeits are dangerous precisely because they look convincing. The same is true of spiritual sayings that sound biblical but quietly distort how we think about God, stewardship, and money.Many believers can quote phrases that feel deeply spiritual—comforting even—but when placed under the light of Scripture, they don't actually appear there at all. Or worse, they twist what Scripture truly says. These “counterfeit verses” often shape how we view success, risk, provision, and dependence on God without us even realizing it.To explore this issue, we sat down with Taylor Standridge, Production Manager of FaithFi and a regular contributor to Faithful Steward. Taylor is also the lead writer behind Look at the Sparrows and Our Ultimate Treasure. In his recent article, Counterfeit Verses: How to Spot The Sayings That Aren't in the Bible, Taylor traces this problem all the way back to the beginning.“Did God Really Say?”—The First CounterfeitTaylor begins in Genesis 3, when the serpent approaches Eve with a deceptively subtle question: “Did God really say…?” (Genesis 3:1).This moment is critical because the enemy doesn't begin with an outright lie. Instead, he distorts what God has said and, in doing so, undermines God's character. The implication isn't merely that the command is questionable—but that God Himself may be withholding something good.Once Adam and Eve doubt God's goodness, disobedience follows naturally.That same pattern persists today. Many modern financial lies—whether cultural narratives or counterfeit verses—aren't blatant falsehoods. They're half-truths. They sound wise. They feel spiritual. And because they're close enough to the truth, they feel safe.Like a ship that veers off course by only one degree, the deviation seems harmless at first. But over time, it leads somewhere very different from what was intended.At the heart of every counterfeit is the same ancient question: Can God really be trusted?Counterfeit verses don't come with warning labels. They borrow biblical language, appeal to our emotions, and speak to real desires—hope, comfort, identity, and security.Sometimes they even quote Scripture, but rip it out of context.The danger isn't familiarity with Scripture—it's fragmented familiarity. When we know verses as slogans rather than as part of God's larger story, we become vulnerable to subtle distortions. The goal, however, isn't suspicion or cynicism. It's discernment—learning to recognize when a truth has been nudged just slightly off course.Studying the Real Thing: A Lesson from Counterfeit CurrencyTaylor uses a powerful illustration from the film Catch Me If You Can. Frank Abagnale Jr. succeeds as a forger not by inventing fake money from scratch, but by studying the real thing in obsessive detail—down to the ink, paper, and watermarks.Ironically, that expertise later makes him invaluable to the FBI.Banks don't train tellers by showing them every possible fake. They train them by handing them genuine currency until authenticity becomes instinctive.The same is true of Scripture. Discernment doesn't come from memorizing every error—it comes from knowing God's Word so deeply that when something sounds “almost right,” you can feel that it isn't.Common Counterfeit Verses That Shape Our View of Money“Money is the Root of All Evil”This misquote radically reshapes our theology of money. If money itself is evil, then wealth becomes suspicious, and stewardship feels compromising.But Scripture says something far more searching: “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils” (1 Timothy 6:10).The issue isn't possession—it's devotion. Scripture doesn't demonize money; it disciples our hearts.“God Helps Those Who Help Themselves”This phrase flips the gospel upside down. It places self-sufficiency at the center and turns God into a backup plan.Biblically, grace always comes first. God meets us in our need, not our strength. Stewardship, then, isn't self-rescue—it's dependence. Jesus says it plainly: “Apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:5).“God Won't Give You More Than You Can Handle”This saying sounds comforting, but it places the burden of endurance squarely on our shoulders.Paul tells a different story: “We were so utterly burdened beyond our strength… so that we would not rely on ourselves but on God” (2 Corinthians 1:8–9).God often allows what we cannot handle so that we learn to rely on Him.“Let Go and Let God”This phrase requires nuance. Scripture does call us to trust—but never to passive disengagement.Faith and obedience always move together. Noah builds. Abraham goes. Ruth works. Grace empowers action; it doesn't replace it. As J. I. Packer once said, the Christian motto isn't “Let go and let God,” but “Trust God and get going.”Growing in Discernment Without FearDiscernment begins with familiarity. Counterfeits thrive when Scripture is reduced to slogans. But when we immerse ourselves in the full story of God's Word, we learn to recognize the Shepherd's voice (John 10:4).Community matters too. God designed us to learn truth together—through teaching, correction, and shared wisdom.The goal isn't paranoia. It's confidence. We don't spend our lives studying counterfeits—we anchor ourselves in truth, trusting the Spirit of God to alert us when something isn't from Him.If we want to steward money wisely, we must first steward God's truth faithfully. Secret Movie Club founder.programmer Craig Hammill takes a look at five favorites-Frank Capra's 1946 It's A Wonderful Life, Ernst Lubitsch's 1940 The Shop Around the Corner, Preston Struges' 1944 The Miracle of Morgan's Creek, Vincente Minnelli's 1944 Meet Me In St. Louis, and W.S.Van Dyke's 1934 The Thin Man. Interestingly, all these classic use dark subject matter-contemplated suicide, financial stress, murder, small town scandal-to contrast and thus emphasize Christmas themes of redemption, family, second chances.
