In the time in which Clausewitz wrote "On War", going on the offensive involved no small amount of risk. Between the rise of dominance in the field of artillery and new and brutal ways of preparing a killing field, going on the attack meant being vulnerable to all matter of calamity. As a result, his analysis of offensive variations stresses the need for boldness and prudence in equal measure. There are many reasons to mount an attack, from the wholesale destruction of our opponents to the acquisition of secondary objectives, each of them having their own hazards and considerations for success. Yaga Malark delves into this simple yet complicated subject to bring you the best methods for offensive variations. While often cited as the "honorable" Chaos God who hates magic, the history of his lore is a moving target. We analyze the texts from Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay (1986), Slaves to Darkness (1988), and the Renegades expansion (1992) to pinpoint exactly when Khorne changed from a god of mindless destruction to a god of martial prowess.Support the show

This we look back at Warhammer 40K Second Edition! The shift from Second to Third Edition was one of, if not the, biggest edition changes in modern gaming. Third Edition became the template that 40k followed for many editions and years later BUT does this mean that Second Edition should be forgotten? Today we discuss why this might not be the case. This week I am joined by the Bring & Battle Wargaming guys, who were the organisers of this year's fantastic Bunker Assault 2nd Ed 40k event in the UK. We chat about the event, Second Edition as a game and nostalgia in gaming. I was recovering from being ill in this episode so my voice is a little funny. Sorry about that!

Today we investigate the rare and often dangerous concept of "fun," cover the Imperium's many convoluted card games, Perturabo's obsession with using literal wargames to plan battles, and the absurdly complex board game Regicide, where the goal is to achieve a "Full Mate." Finally, we look at propaganda holodramas, Ciaphas Cain's favorite sport "Scrumball," wild literature like a romance novel set on Krieg, and the Imperium's "mandatory fun" holidays like Sanguinala.Support the show

The goal is to create a "Reverse-Waaagh!" effect so powerful it can break the Ork horde by exploding their heads in a massive chain reaction. The second assault on Ullanor is launched, with Koorland and a small strike team teleporting directly into the Beast's throne room. But it's a trap. Koorland comes face-to-face with the Beast, only to learn the horrifying truth: there was never just one Beast. There are six Prime-Orks. Koorland is killed by the true Beast of Beasts, who mockingly takes his title: "I am Slaughter".With hope all but extinguished, Maximus Thane of the Fists Exemplar steps up. He reunites the successor chapters to rebuild the Imperial Fists and plans a final, all-or-nothing assault with the help of Grand Master Vangorich and Fabricator General Kubik. To secure the necessary resources, Vangorich blackmails the remaining High Lords with hidden assassins, forcing them to commit everything to the war effort. This final battle is a gamble on an impossible scale, and a desperate race to detonate the last Ork Psyker bomb in the heart of the Beast's temple.Support the show

The Independent Characters - A Warhammer 40k Podcast | Radio
Episode 267 of The Independent Characters arrives right on schedule, and it's a big one, both in content and in subject matter. This time, we're striding into the battlefield with not one, but two colossal armies in our latest Show of Force. Join us as we explore both the Imperial Knights and their dark reflections, the Chaos Knights. These towering engines of war have a presence on the tabletop and in the lore that is impossible to ignore, and we're diving deep into every aspect of them. Edit: So as we started recording – we realize that this would turn into a 5-6 hour episode. Carl was, once again, too optimistic regarding how much we could cram into an episode. So we made the decision to divide this topic into two parts. Episode 268 will cover the Chaos Knights as Part 2 of Oaths and Damnation. Over the course of the episode, we cover their origins and history, the unique culture of the Knight Houses, and how those sworn oaths of loyalty can either lead to noble service to the Imperium or a fall into the corrupting grip of the Dark Gods. From lore to codex, units to battlefield roles, we've got it all packed in. As our Show of Force Episodes go – we'll also take a look back at their evolution over the years – how these armies have grown in design, rules, and miniature range to become some of the most striking models in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. Carl and Adan – as well as a special guest, will unpack the details of these armies over the course of several hours. Fire up your void-shields because Episode 267 releases on October 18th, 2025. Time Stamps: 0:00:00 – Show Intro, Elite Choice, Hobby Progress 1:00:40 – Oaths & Damnation – Part 1 (First Half) 1:54:10 – Oaths & Damnation – Part 1 (Second Half) 3:23:10 – War on The Shore Narrative Event! 3:46:30 – Final Thoughts and show closing Relevant Links: The Independent Characters Patreon Tablewar! – SPONSOR Herrick Games & Hobbies – SPONSOR Imperium Maledictum by Cubicle7 Goonhammer War on The Shore 2026 Adepticon Games Workshop The Black Library

While the High Lords flounder, Juskina Tull, Speaker for the Chartist Captains, proposes a "Proletarian Crusade," mobilizing a massive fleet of civilian and merchant ships to assault the Ork moon. The crusade successfully lands on the moon's surface, but it is a trap; the terrain itself shifts and grinds, destroying the human forces.Following the disaster, three unarmed Orks, calling themselves "ambassadors," land on Terra and demand the Imperium's surrender in perfect gothic. Before the High Lords can respond, the Imperial Palace is rocked by an attack, not from the Orks, but from Eldar Harlequins. Led by Shadowseer Lhaerial Rey, they deliver a message from Eldrad Ulthran, warning of the greater threat of Chaos and presenting a gift from the lost Primarch Vulkan—the tooth of a Nocturnian salamander.Support the show
On this week's episode, Brad and Eric pick-up their calculators and go over all the new Warhammer 40K and Age of Sigmar Battleforce boxes to figure out if they are worth their value or are better left on the shelf. I could end the episode description there but I'm gonna yap a bit more because the manager in Brad likes thick chunks of text. Which Battleforce boxes are great additions to the current and past Combat Patrols and other discount boxes? Which factions are missing an entire model to make their boxes look appealing? Can we collect an entire army by only buying promo boxes? All those questions answered and more through editor and patron abuse on this episode! Send us a textIn EPISODE TWO HUNDRED TWENTY-ONE (221) of the "LOOK OUT, SIR! 40K" Podcast, Dan and Phil didn't really have anything all that specific to talk about. Yes, Phil had been over to Gibraltar very recently for the SN Battle Reports No Retreat 40k Tournament Thingy, so we talk about that for a bit. Also, GW have announced a bunch of stuff like a new Warhammer Quest, and some Christmas Bundle boxes, so we talk about all that stuff also. Basically, it's another one of those general chit chat filler episodes where we don't talk about anything too specific. We hope you enjoy.Huge thank you to “A_Nerd_on_Crusade” for the 5 STAR REVIEW via APPLE PODCAST AUSTRALIA, we massively appreciate your support. Having recovered from the devastating Horus Heresy, the Traitor Legions were still reeling from their defeat inside the Eye of Terror, Xenos were relegated to the frontiers of Imperial space, and the stagnation and decay that would define the Imperium millennia later had not yet set in. Confident that humanity had endured its greatest challenge, the Orks in particular were underestimated and judged to have been removed as a threat since the Ullanor Crusade. This underestimation of the greenskins would prove to be disastrous when an enormous Ork planetoids began to materialize around imperial worlds, the Imperial Fists Chapter was destroyed, entire Sectors were overrun by the Greenskins and billions upon billions perished.Support the show

It's that time again - the 2025 Hobby Progress Challenge is here, and we're diving headfirst into all the details on this episode. Chelle, Adan, and Carl sit down to go over the rules of this year's challenge, how it's tracked, and what makes it such a fun and motivating way to tackle that pile of shame. Whether you're painting for glory in the Emperor's name or fueled by the whispers of Chaos, the HPC is your chance to stay focused, productive, and inspired all year long. We'll also hear directly from our community. Listeners who took part in last year's challenge share how the HPC helped them hit their goals, what they learned along the way, and what they're looking forward to this time around. Their stories remind us that while prizes and painted models are great, it's the camaraderie and encouragement that truly keep the brush moving month after month. Of course, we'll be talking about the prize support too - because what's a challenge without a few epic rewards along the way? With fantastic sponsors stepping up again this year, every month of progress not only builds your army but also earns you entries into our prize drawings. The 2025 Hobby Progress Challenge officially kicked off on September 1st, but it's never too late to join in. Tune in October 1st to hear how it all works, get inspired by your fellow hobbyists, and take the plunge into a year of painting, progress, and shared passion for Warhammer 40K.
