Let's talk about how we spend our time! Staying consistent and intentional throughout the summer can be difficult due to the changes in rhythm and environment, so we must go back to the basics and keep it simple yet intentional. Here is the text from the book of Colossians that is read and discussed in this episode! Colossians 2:6-7(MSG) My counsel for you is simple and straightforward: Just go ahead with what you've been given. You received Christ Jesus, the Master; now live him. You're deeply rooted in him. You're well constructed upon him. You know your way around the faith. Now do what you've been taught. School's out; quit studying the subject and start living it! And let your living spill over into thanksgiving. Colossians 3:1–2 (MSG) So if you're serious about living this new resurrection life with Christ, act like it. Pursue the things over which Christ presides. Don't shuffle along, eyes to the ground, absorbed with the things right in front of you. Look up, and be alert to what is going on around Christ—that's where the action is. See things from his perspective. If you would like to connect with someone on our team, we would love to connect with you! All you have to do is text the word “CONNECT” to (910 597-1160! We hope this conversation encourages you and challenges you to take the next step in your walk with God! In this week's conversation, Carson sits down with the new Overflow staff, Jenna Mondoro and Jake Smith, to talk about what the first part of 2022 has been like and what they are all learning right now in their walk with God.
The relationship we have with our phones is complicated. Our phones connect us with the world around us and make our lives so much more convenient. But with the average college student consuming 9 hours of screen time a day and almost 3 hours spent on social media, it seems like we might be unintentionally trading convenience for constant distraction. In this week's conversation, Clay, Maddie, and Zack sat down to talk about the positives and negatives of screen time, how we can DTR (define the relationship) with our devices, and some helpful tips for intentional and meaningful usage of our phones.
If we have learned anything about friends over the past few weeks, we've learned friendships are complicated, nuanced, and even messy- but they are worth it! On this week's Overflow Unplugged episode, Clay, Maddie, and Zack sat down to finish responding to the friendship questions we received from you guys on Instagram! In Part 2 of the Q&A, we discussed questions like: -How do you handle toxic friendships? -How do you deal with one-sided friendships? -What do you do when you are the friend everyone runs to but there is no one there for you? -What do you do when you feel like you've given too much trust away and you often are left feeling hurt? -What do you do when you have friends who get jealous when you hang out with other people? -What are healthy boundaries in friendship? -How do you set boundaries when helping a friend begins to hinder your growth? -Boundaries in friendships with the opposite sex? -When to take a step back in a friendship? We hope you enjoy today's episode!
We've really enjoyed unpacking this idea of "T.R.U.E." friends last time on the podcast. But friendships are complicated, nuanced, and even messy. So we wanted to take some time to get more specific. We asked you guys on Instagram what questions you have about friendship- and you didn't hold back! On this week's Overflow Unplugged episode, Clay, Maddie, and Zack sit down to respond to the questions we received from Instagram. But with so many questions, we had to split the questions into two different episodes. In Part 1 of the Q&A, we discussed questions like: How do you get past surface-level friendships? How to build trust in friendship? How do you handle friends who don't understand your relationship with God? Why does God give us temporary friends? How do you get over the fear of being a burden when reaching out for help from a friend? How can you heal broken friendships? We hope you enjoy today's episode!
We all want friends- yet it seems like few of us have the friends we want. For some of us, that's because we hold our friends to such a high standard that no one ever meets our expectations. We make friendship impossible when we expect our friends to be perfect! For others, we don't have the friends we want because we don't have a vision for the friends we need. We settle in friendships when we have no vision beyond what the world tells us to look for in relationships. But we believe that God has a better vision for friendships, a vision for T.R.U.E. friends! In this week's Overflow Unplugged episode, Clay, Maddie, and Zack sat down to have a conversation to unpack what it means to be a T.R.U.E. friend. They discuss how we have healthy expectations in our relationships and how we can become better friends personally. But by the end of the conversation, they acknowledge that getting friendships right might be one of the most powerful things we can do to change the world around us.
January usually comes with a wave of resolutions that we hope will make us happier in the year ahead. New Year, new me, right? Typically not! At least 80% of New Years resolutions fail by mid-February and we end up right back in our old routines and habits
Last week we discussed the seemingly ever-present question in the back of our minds, “what is God's plan for my life?” The reality is that God's plan is a mystery. While we may never fully understand the depth of how God is working circumstances together for our life in the future, God doesn't want us to miss out on what He has here in front of us today: purpose. We believe that God has made us intentionally and uniquely, and as we come to know God better, we begin to discover more about ourselves and God's purpose for our lives. We hope you enjoy part-two of our conversation on “God's Plan / My Purpose!”
“What is God's plan for my life?” This is the question we are constantly asking. Sometimes we even try to forge our own plan. Either way, we all desire to know what our future holds and how we're going to get there. This week we begin a two-part conversation that we are calling “God's Plan / My Purpose.” We hope you enjoy!
There are seasons of life that feel like you are walking through a desert, times where you see more negative in your life than positive, and you might feel distant from God. Chances are, right now, you might feel like you are in the desert! While this season might not be pleasant, we do believe that it is purposeful! So how do we navigate life in these difficult times? How do we find God's provision in the desert? We discuss all of this and more on this week's podcast! This episode also is the debut of our newest Overflow Staff member, Maddie Goslee!
A lot has happened in the world since our last podcast! With the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a lot of uncertainty in our world right now... and with uncertainty comes ANXIETY. So what do we do about it? Let's be honest, "just don't worry" might be good-intentioned advice, but it doesn't stop the chaos in our minds. On this week's episode of Overflow Unplugged, we discuss how we can respond to anxiety and, even in the unknown, we can find rest in a God who promises PEACE. Make sure to listen through the end for a special treat from our friend Kalee Stikeleather (Kalee Music)!
In a world of Instagram filters and social media highlight reels, it's easy to share the good and exciting things going on in our lives. But it makes it really difficult to talk about our brokenness- even to God! Unfortunately, we often believe that brokenness holds us back from who God wants us to be. But brokenness isn't the problem- hiding is. In a world that says you have to be perfect to be used, God says he will work in and through you right in the middle of your mess. It's when you are ready to be real and brave about your brokenness that God can use you the most effectively! In this week's episode of Overflow Unplugged, we talk about owning our mess and finding God's strength in us- no matter the season. And our guest on the podcast, Toni Collier, keeps it real AND hilarious the entire time. She also reminds us that "Broken Crayons Still Color." We hope you enjoy!
If you have been following Jesus for a while, you have probably heard the term "quiet time" used a lot in Christian circles. While the name is vague, the implications are important and foundational for building a thriving relationship with God. Check out today's episode of Overflow Unplugged as we help break down unnecessary stereotypes of a "quiet time" and focus on 3 simple building blocks to spending time with God.
Research has proven that building deep meaningful friendships not only makes life more fulfilling and enjoyable, but it also contributes to you living longer! The problem is that building lasting friendships takes a lot of work... and we don't always know where to start. Check out today's episode of Overflow Unplugged as we discuss choosing, forging, and keeping meaningful friendships.
Building relationships requires intimacy... but we're not (just) talking about physical intimacy. Good relationships require growth over time in mental, emotional, and spiritual intimacy as well. The tricky part is discovering and establishing helpful boundaries that allow your relationships to grow at a healthy pace. In today's episode, we offer up some intentional questions that you can ask yourself to allow your friendships and dating relationships to thrive!
For a lot of people, the relationship status "single" can feel like an unwanted label or a frustrating reminder. This has a lot to do with the messages we receive from culture and social media. But the truth is, Americans are getting married later than ever before, resulting in the largest population of "singles" in our country's history! So what does God want us to do in this stage of life before getting married? Today's episode will give you helpful perspective and purpose in this season regardless of if you have not yet dated or if you are engaged and looking ahead to marriage!
The problem with dating is that dating has to start somewhere. It doesn't just happen. And let's just be real- that comes with a certain amount of pressure. The pressure to impress and, if you're watching the Bachelor every week, then pressure to compete and to win. But what if there was a better way, a higher way to think about dating? What does God say about dating and what does that mean for how we date? And where do we start? Check this week's episode for some very practical help and thoughts on the foundation of dating.
Our debut podcast episode is about courage and what it looks like to live courageously in the face of fear. Our friend Samer Massad from Woodstock City Church joined us from Atlanta, Georgia to speak a message at our Tuesday night Overflow gathering called "Do It Scared". After the message, Zack had the opportunity to sit down with Samer to dive into the ideas of anxiety, comfort, insecurity, and calling. Make sure to grab your journal and get ready to take notes from the wisdom that Samer has to share!
