In this episode, Chris Nichols is joined by Samer Saab of Alloy Labs to explore the growing tension between a traditional "debt mindset" and a more forward-looking "equity mindset" in banking. While banks are built to minimize risk and protect principal, that same instinct can limit innovation, partnerships, and long-term growth. Samer shares practical ways banks can rebalance risk and reward by moving faster, experimenting more, and treating new initiatives as scalable capabilities rather than one-off projects.

Send us Fan MailIn this conversation, Ricardo Karam sits down with Lebanese Olympian Samer Tawk in a dialogue that goes far beyond sport, tracing a journey shaped not only by achievement, but by rupture, resilience, and the quiet reconstruction of the self. From choosing an unlikely path in a country where winter sports are rare, to representing Lebanon on the Olympic stage in PyeongChang, Samer reflects on what it means to pursue a dream that seems geographically and culturally distant. The conversation moves through the defining moment of his career, a fall that threatened to end everything and the inner shift that followed, where fear, identity, and purpose were all called into question. He speaks about the long years of recovery, not simply as a physical process, but as a confrontation with silence, uncertainty, and the absence of clear direction. From missing the Beijing Olympics to stepping into the role of coach, Samer shares how distance from competition reshaped his understanding of himself and of the sport he once defined himself by.His return, seven years later, is not framed as a comeback, but as a transformation where carrying the Lebanese flag becomes not just a national moment, but a deeply personal victory.Join Ricardo Karam and Samer Tawk for a conversation on falling, rebuilding, and discovering that sometimes, the only way forward is through what breaks us.
Samer Saleh and Diane Aboushi Saleh are the married farmers behind Halal Pastures, a 100% organic and halal farm in Rock Tavern, New York. They first started growing food for their family on half an acre of land without any previous farming experience in 2015. Today they're one of the busiest stands at the Union Square Greenmarket, with specialty produce that lures in chefs from top restaurants and home cooks alike. In this episode, Samer and Diane share how they've grown the farm and what they're looking forward to as the bountiful spring and summer season unfolds. And it's the return of Three Things. Aliza and Matt discuss what's interesting in the food world, including visits to Dean's, Kabawa, and Bar Ferdinando in New York, Caity Weaver writing colorfully about the best free bread in America, Zab's x Taco Bell have collaborated on a nationwide menu item (wow), and the results of a competitive chocolate chip cookie competition. This week's Mixtape Rewind takes you back to where Matt and Sam reviewed memorable first tracks from albums. The first track can make you stay, skip, or fall in love. We dove into 12 album openers that don't just start a record — they define it — and traced how a great intro sets the promise for everything that follows. From the sunlit optimism of the Beach Boys' Wouldn't It Be Nice to the neon stride of Taylor Swift's Welcome to New York, we explore how artists use track one to signal a theme, a shift, or a dare.We share the moments that hooked us: Alanis Morissette cutting straight to the bone on All I Really Want, Pearl Jam's Once roaring to life as a debut mission statement, and Chance the Rapper turning gospel joy into a full-album thesis on All We Got. We also talk about pivots and reinvention — Springsteen's The E Street Shuffle breaking from his Dylan-leaning debut, and Swift's leap from Nashville to skyscraper synth-pop — and why that boldness belongs right up front. Along the way, we celebrate high-voltage openers like Sleigh Bells' Tell 'Em, the literate punch of Titus Andronicus' A More Perfect Union, the tender sting of Dashboard Confessional's Hands Down, the bittersweet charm of The Shins' Kissing the Lipless, and Andrew Bird's Fiery Crash turning an airline safety demo into a meditation on mortality. This is a love letter to sequencing, storytelling, and the lost art of letting an album guide your night. Matt and Samer go through twelve songs that served as the opening tracks for some amazing albums. You can find the mix here on Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/04FSmhh5ejKJ5oDdPr1WED?si=060ea013ab8c4c761. Andy Cumpstey and Kate Leslie take us to Anesthesiology 2025, the annual meeting of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA), where they spoke with Samer Narouze, Chairman of the Center for Pain Medicine at Western Reserve Hospital and Chair of the Pain Committee for the ASA. Samer introduces the newly formed Pain Medicine Coalition, which aims to improve patient access to pain care and advocate for pain specialists. The coalition, an alliance between prestigious organizations, focuses on reducing barriers to non-opioid pain treatments and legislative advocacy for better coverage. He also discusses the importance of comprehensive, evidence-based pain management and the recent launch of a Certificate of Innovation and Leadership in Pain Medicine to support newly graduated pain fellows. The discussion highlights the coalition's efforts to rebrand and advance the field of pain medicine toward a more patient-centric and multidisciplinary approach.
After Donald Trump took credit for negotiating a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, Israeli occupation forces killed several Palestinian civilians in Gaza on Tuesday of this week, violating a ceasefire as Israel's government vowed to keep restricting aid to the devastated enclave until Hamas returns the bodies of hostages taken two years ago. On today's Palestine Post, we speak with Samer Araabi, member of the Arab Resource and Organizing Center (AROC) and co-hosts the weekly Palestine Solidarity Announcements every Friday at noon. — Subscribe to this podcast: https://plinkhq.com/i/1637968343?to=page Get in touch: lawanddisorder@kpfa.org Follow us on socials @LawAndDis: https://twitter.com/LawAndDis; https://www.instagram.com/lawanddis/ The post Palestine Post w/ AROC's Samer Araabi appeared first on KPFA.
In our two-part series on Palestinian statehood, we traced the history and politics behind decades of failed attempts. But for Palestinian activist and political leader Samer Sinijlawi, the real story isn't just about UN votes or diplomatic resolutions. It's about whether Palestinians and Israelis can build a shared future with their own hands. In this candid conversation, Noam and Samer explore why lasting peace must be created from within, and why he still believes it's possible. This episode of Unpacking Israeli History is generously in honor of Dr. Andrew and Marci Spitzer. Starting in the 1970s, Palestinian theater flourished as part of a Palestinian cultural spring. In the absence of local radio, television, and uncensored journalism, theater production became the leading form of artistic expression, and Palestinian theater artists self-identified as a movement. Although resistance was not their sole function, these theater makers contributed to an active cultural resistance front. With A Movement's Promise: The Making of Contemporary Palestinian Theater (Stanford UP, 2025), Samer Al-Saber tells the story of the Palestinian Theater Movement over nearly three decades, as they created plays and productions that articulated versions of Palestinian identity, critiqued social norms, celebrated and extended Palestinian cultural values, and challenged the power disparity created by the Occupation. The struggles between Palestinian theater artists and Israeli authorities form the central relationships in this history. Al-Saber juxtaposes the agency of Palestinian theater artists, in their determination to perform against immense challenges, with the power of Israeli authorities to grant or deny permission to theatrical productions. The legal structure of institutionalized censorship prevented Palestinian artists from expressing their chosen message, and the theater movement's search for permission to perform illuminates the disparity in power between the occupier and the occupied. In writing the first history of the Palestinian Theater Movement, Al-Saber amplifies necessary voices in this Palestinian cultural history, told from below. Samer Al-Saber is Assistant Professor of Theatre at Williams College. Learn more about your ad choices. Matt and Samer dive deep into twelve remarkable artists who've successfully bridged the entertainment divide. From Justin Timberlake's smooth transition from boy band heartthrob to serious dramatic actor, to Carrie Brownstein's seamless movement between indie rock and sketch comedy, these performers defy the notion that you must choose a single creative path. The episode explores unexpected musical talents, like Zooey Deschanel's sweet vocals in She & Him and Steve Martin's impressive banjo skills, alongside discussions of Donald Glover's dual identity as Childish Gambino and Jack Black's perfect fusion of comedy and rock with Tenacious D. We also celebrate legends like Cher, whose Oscar-winning acting complements her iconic music career, and remember talents like Aaliyah, whose promising dual career was tragically cut short. What becomes clear throughout our musical journey is that true artistry rarely confines itself to a single medium. These exceptional talents remind us that creativity flows where it will, sometimes producing individuals who can captivate us equally whether they're delivering lines or delivering lyrics. Whether you're more familiar with their on-screen performances or their chart-topping hits, you'll gain a new appreciation for these multi-dimensional artists.Which of these double-threats surprised you most?
