In today's episode of The Heart & Hustle Podcast, we welcome back the powerhouse herself — Toni Collier! If you've ever felt like you're too broken, too betrayed, or too worn down to keep going, this conversation will remind you that you're not alone. Toni opens up about one of the hardest seasons of her life and how it inspired her brand-new book, “Don't Try This Alone”. (Link Below). She shares raw, personal stories of heartbreak, healing, and the power of leaning on others when you want to hide. From building a “confessional community” that became her lifeline, to learning how to be brave enough to send a single vulnerable text, Toni reminds us that healing doesn't mean living pain-free — it means increasing your capacity to hold pain while finding hope in the middle of it. Together, we dive into what true community looks like, how to rebuild trust after betrayal, and why bravery often looks like simply saying, “I need help.” Whether you're in a valley right now or preparing for the storms that will inevitably come, Toni's wisdom and humor will leave you encouraged, empowered, and ready to believe in the goodness of people again. --------------------------------- Pinterest Freebie: https://theheartuniversity.com/pinterest --------------------------------- Heart Shop: https://theheartuniversity.com/shop --------------------------------- Primally Pure: https://primallypure.com/?rfsn=5649435.725fd3 Use HEARTANDHUSTLE for 10% OFF. --------------------------------- Stay Updated with Toni and check out her new book: https://www.instagram.com/tonijcollier/ - https://www.instagram.com/brkncrayons/ - Book Link on Amazon - "Don't Try This Alone" --------------------------------- Watch on YouTube: https://youtube.com/@theheartuniversitychannel?si=33lzxpBA9UxKlgTE --------------------------------- If you want to connect with us and other listeners in the Heart and Hustle community join our Facebook group here. --------------------------------- “PODCAST10” for 10% off anything from The Shop! www.theheartuniversity.com/shop --------------------------------- Follow along: www.instagram.com/mrslindseyroman www.instagram.com/evierupp www.instagram.com/theheartuniversity
There are few experiences more painful than relational betrayal. But what happens when that betrayal becomes public and costs you your home and faith community? That was precisely what Toni Collier experienced when she not only experienced betrayal in her marriage but the people in her church, those she heavily invested in, ghosted her during her time of pain. But despite the pain she experienced, she also encountered the grace of God through the loving support of those who knew her, saw her, and stood beside her in her season of intense pain. This experience reiterated to her the importance of finding safe and support community upon whom one can depend. This episode is for everyone who feels alone in their pain and finds themselves in desperate need of a friend. Today, I'm joined by my friend, author, and speaker Toni Collier, who knows firsthand what it means to rebuild a broken life. When Toni was last on the show, we talked about embracing brokenness. Since then, her life has essentially exploded in ways that would make most people retreat: betrayal, a public divorce, and the loss of her job, church, community, and home. And yet, Toni chose to let people into her pain. In this powerful conversation, she shares how doing so ultimately helped her heal. We talk about how to trust again, find the right people to lean on, and let go of the need to be the strong one all the time. If you've been wondering how to navigate the messiness of life with others, this conversation will give you hope, courage, and practical steps forward. This week we're discussing what Real Courage Looks Like When you've been through divorce, betrayal, or repeated heartbreak, the thought of starting over again can feel impossible. It takes more than sheer willpower to stand back up, it takes tenacity, deep-rooted hope, and the kind of community that can carry you when you're too weary to carry yourself. Toni Collier, founder of Broken Crayons Still Color and author of Don't Try This Alone, joins us to share her journey through two divorces, raising two children as a single mom, and finding the courage to step into deep, confessional relationships instead of hiding in shame. Her story offers both a raw look at pain and a roadmap toward healing. Today, we cover three main points: Tenacity is built, not inherited. Hiding keeps us from healing. Safe community starts with becoming a safe person. Through raw honesty and practical wisdom, Toni reminds us that we aren't designed to do life alone, no matter our personality, history, or fear of being hurt again. The temptation to hide when we hurt and isolate when we go through shameful seasons is doing a lot more harm to us than healing for us. It's in stepping out into the light, seeking to be known by a healthy community, that we can move out of our pain into a posture of real connection and direction. There's a lie you've turned into identity—that you must perform vulnerability to earn belonging. This week, Toni Collier joins me to pull the veil off emotional infidelity hidden in silence, the orphan wounds we carry in isolation, and the spiritual manipulation we excuse as authenticity. She's walked through heartbreaking betrayal, spiritual misuse, and the long deconstruction of self‑worth in ministry circles. And she has found that true vulnerability isn't performative—it's sacred, grounded, sacrificial, and healing. In this episode, we dismantle the theology of emotional scarcity, expose spiritual control disguised as care, and confront the cost of emotional isolation. Toni challenges common assumptions: that therapy alone solves trauma, that forgiveness equals denial, that age or faith automatically heals wounds. This conversation calls you home to integrity, community, and emotional wholeness. Episode Links Show Notes Buy my NEW BOOK "Healing What You Can't Erase" here! We share how telling the whole truth, the messy and the beautiful, not only sets us free, but helps others step into freedom too.If you've ever wrestled with shame, struggled to trust after betrayal, or found it difficult to be vulnerable with people and wondered how to find joy in the middle of hard seasons, this one's for you.Share this episode with someone who needs the reminder that God's joy is stronger than their pain, and that they were never meant to walk alone.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

For ministry leader, author, speaker and podcaster Toni Collier, she thought she was finally living her redemption story in her second marriage, only to watch her relationship crumble very quickly when she learned of continued betrayal within it. Immediately after getting some of the most devastating news of her life, she saw God's kindness in that she was just doors down from some of her best friends. It was this group of women, some of the members of her confessional community and the constant reminders of God's with-ness, what she calls "God Winks," that sustained her through a very public divorce and all that followed. As she walked through the heartache of losing the marriage that she thought was an answer to her past pain, she learned how to lead in the midst of her greatest hurts. By sharing vulnerably her story and what she was dealing with in real time, she offered others the freedom to speak out and share their own suffering. She continues to offer women the opportunity to find healing through her ministry, Broken Crayons Still Color, and her podcast, Still Coloring. In this honest and raw conversation with Davey, Toni shares what it looks like to lead through our pain, why we need to pay attention to God's goodness in our hurt, and how a confessional community can help us heal. If you're a leader walking through the unexpected and wondering how you can keep going in the middle of it, this episode will serve as a reminder that even in our brokenness, God can use our lives to color a beautiful picture of His grace and redemption in life for others. Many people experience trauma, many people are children when it happens. God's gift to children is resilience. But what we used to cope as children is crushing us as adults. We all struggle admitting weaknesses for fear of judgement. But the only way to begin healing is by acknowledging the struggle you feel. As Toni Collier says in the sermon, "You can't heal what you can't name". For those who feel the weight of carrying their trauma, and struggle with their faith because of it, this sermon is for you!
Here's a fun little podcast update for you. As most of you (hopefully) know, Heather MacFadyen of the Don't Mom Alone podcast and I have a little sideshow we do once a month called Sidetracked. Basically, it's an unfiltered conversation between the two of us discussing life's goings on, parenting, faith, etc. It comes out the first Friday of the month on Don't Mom Alone, and It's been a big hit. So, spinning off from that concept this week, we're doing a second episode of Sidetracked in the summer months that includes a surprise guest aired on both of our shows. And today is the day we kick it off with our friend Toni Collier. Please hear me: You do not want to miss a second of this conversation. If you don't know Toni, she's the author of Broken Crayons Still Color as well as a podcaster, speaker, and mom of two sweet kiddos. Toni chats with us about everything from getting tattoos with Ann Voskamp to seeing God show up through “God winks.”
Today kicks off our new sidetracked series with a surprise guest! Toni Collier- author, speaker, podcaster, and single mom- joins us to cover all the topics. Toni is the author of Broken Crayons Still Color and encourages people that even in the hard and dark parts of life God is waiting to use us. In our brokenness, we can see God in the land of the living. She reminds us that regardless of events in our past there is still hope and joy to be found. Toni discusses how we lose wonder and excitement as we become adults and how to remain like a child while we look for God in the everyday, He is always working if we have the eyes to see it. It wouldn't be sidetracked though if we didn't go on every tangent possible from tattoos with Ann Voskamp, to Toni's dream concert, sushi, and the Ironman movies, we cover it all. At some point in your life you may have been told, or made to feel, that your emotions weren't valid. Maybe it was a parent never letting you emote, or maybe it was friends picking on you for crying. Too often, outside voices try to silence our internal feelings and we become adults who are incapable of processing the inevitable grief we will face in our life. On today's show, guest host Toni Collier and Dr. Alison Cook discusses the complexities of grief and emphasizes the importance of understanding and processes grief, as well as the guilt and gaslighting that often accompany it. Through transparency and the sharing of their own personal experiences, Toni and Dr. Cook encourages listeners to create space for feelings and give practical advice on how to brave the next step forward in making healthy decisions.
