Historically, we have been told that it is very unladylike to lose our tempers. But that's his story. Cause if we had ever listened to her, we would know that we are very much ladies, and as we will not judge the eruption of a volcano, so we will not cast judgment on the expression of rage. Yes yes…
If you ever hear yourself getting defensive, demanding you are a 'good person,' maybe you're not! Maybe you are trying to rationalize your behavior because you are so convinced you are a good person. Instead of getting your self awareness on, you are probably missing out on some great learning opportunities. Trigger warning, we explore a few delicate topics in this episode, so if you don't want to hear about assault, please switch to a more light hearted episode about systemic racism or the subtle art of not giving a fuck. We endure so much in the world of stand up comedy. Do we have to be gross to get close with comedians?
Juneteenth is not the day enslaved people were freed or the day slavery ended. It’s the day when enslaved Texans found out they had been free... for over 2 years, on June 19th, 1865. That was two years after 'Honest' Abe released his greatest hit, The Emancipation Proclamation, on Jan 1st, 1863. The confederates, however, were not just going to let those slaves go free. So... they didn't tell them they were free for as long as possible! And that's the world we are living in today. It's ok if you didn't know! Sonal just found out this week. And Meg knows because she knows way more than people born in this country... such as Sonal. In the time you read the description of today's episode, you could have placed a call to Daniel Cameron, the attorney general in charge of Breonna Taylor's case. Press 1 to leave a voicemail and ask them to arrest the cops that took her life. 502-696-5300
We are living in a very exciting time. We didn't have the language to put our feelings into action... and now we do! And the whole world seems to be protesting. It can get very tough talking to our families! We'll share some tips. There is so much incredible shit happening with the #BlackLivesMatter movement! And... there is a lot of weird performative shit! Sure, we're all very excited about the big BLM street in Washington D.C., but is the mayor helping the defund the police??? Essential viewing for purposes of understanding what's been happening::: https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=9&v=sb9_qGOa9Go&feature=emb_logo
There is a lot of rage going on, and we are here to redirect the narrative and break some shit down. Like the truth about Memorial Day! Did y'all know that white people appropriated Memorial Day??? If you are still saying all lives matter, here's hoping this episode helps you understand WHY you really gotta stop saying that. The #BlackLivesMatter movement was created by Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, Opal Tometi. It was created to help peaceful protesters organize, but the media rewrote the narrative and called them violent. The same way they are trying to rewrite the story about the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmed Aubrey, and countless others before them. The media will make you care more about a Target than actual human lives who are being targeted. Friday, June 5th, would have been Breonna Taylor's 27th birthday... and the police that killed her and still free to roam the streets. https://www.gofundme.com/f/9v4q2-justice-for-breonna-taylor?utm_medium=email&utm_source=product&utm_campaign=p_email_m_pd-5332-donation-receipt-adyen&utm_content=internal Stay raging, love y'all!
Now is a great time to explore the realms of consciousness, especially if you have a whole farm to wander around like Sting. If you are thinking about experimenting with psychedelics, do not take advice from celebrities! Meg talks about her graduation ceremony from the DARE program, Sonal shares a few stories about how she loves psychedelics. If you're interested in hallucinogenics, don't bother watching 'Have a Good Trip,' on Netflix and watch '2012: A Time for Change' instead.
Deep in isolation, how is everyone feeling about their bodies? Who's letting their mustache grow out? Anyone putting on makeup for Zoom meetings? What is 'beauty'? We are not talking about inner beauty! No, no, we are staying shallow this episode. We are talking Beauty with a capital B, the industry, the youtube vlogs, the Rihanna Revolution. So no matter what you look like, we hope you know how beautiful you are. And if not, you can always try to join the 'Ugly People' group on facebook and get the validation you have always been waiting for. Here's the link for the Vox article mention... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8Jsu7wSyHY And don't forget to follow us on IG @ranirageradio !
It's been a week since Never Have I Ever released on Netflix, and we are still talking about it! And we made a whole damn episode about it, because there is just really so much to talk about. Whether you liked it or hated it, there is so much to talk about it. Join us on a deep dive, celebrating the heck out of this show. Did we mention that it hit the number one watched show on Netflix worldwide...? Tune in now!
Happy Belated Earth Day! We love the Earth, obviously. It's just that her fans can get a little annoying sometimes. Sonal proposes some positive impacts the pandemic is having on the planet, Meg is not so convinced! Are any of these headlines about dolphins in canals even true, and at what cost? They also talk music, Meg insists you have to listen to the song Nude by Radiohead. And follow her on spotify to listen to her pandemic playlist! And Sonal does a great impression of Meg's roommate sneezing.
Rage gang! We lost a few bits of the recording as we're adapting to isolation... BUT we managed to salvage and piece together enough to bring you at least this mini episode. We hope it is coherent! THANK YOU for sticking with us!!! At least we didn't lose the bit where we hear about Sonal's short film 'A Period Piece' available to watch on Amazon Prime...!!! But only until May 6th, so check it out while you can.
Meg and Sonal offer you a break from constant pandemic chatter and talk about all their favorite TV shows through the ages. Meg watched shows Sonal had never even heard of, like 'Drake and Josh,' while Sonal made sure to watch every episode of DuckTales. Bear with us! We are still figuring out the best audio in this remote situaion. Thank you to everyone listening!
From their places of isolation, Meg and Sonal are right in the midst of the pandemic with the rest of the globe. And for the first time, it's okay to not be okay! Across the whole world! Back in the pre-pandemic era, if you weren't feeling okay, you weren't really supposed to talk about it. But right now, we have a chance to feel all the feels. We can make time and space for unprocessed feelings, like grief and trauma. It's painful, but at least we are all going through something together. Grieve deeply! The more we learn to express grief, the more we can express joy.
This is a crazy time in human history, unlike anything most of us have experienced in our lifetimes! We are ALL part of a GLOBAL pandemic, and as this story unfolds, we are adapting the best we can! And we hope the audio works on this episode! Meg is in Virginia and Sonal is Chicago. We share some of the unexpected pros of what seems to be so many cons, and some of our favorite conspiracy theories!
Sonal is solo on this mini episode, and Meg is taking a moment to step back from the exponentially expanding media streams! Are we transitioning to a future of human interaction through mainly our computers and phones? Who knows! Nobody knows anything anymore! Let us know if you are listening...
We recorded a normal episode a few weeks ago... back when everything was 'normal' and people weren't buying up all the toilet paper like maniacs, but that episode seems irrelevant in this here and now. So we'll save that as a bonus track! Right NOW, we are in the midst of a global pandemic together. We are facing a new challenge, together. And Meg and Sonal face the challenge of recording an episode remotely. Stay strong everyone! And stay washing those hands.
Hey gang! Sonal and Meg here bringing some normal ass content in the midst of all the madness. Hopefully RaRaRa is one of your weekly rituals and we hope to keep serving that rage radio. This episode is a part two to last week's episode, 'What is a Trope Even?' Here we explore some solutions... to the good girl trope. Not the pandemic. Stay strong everyone!
What is a trope even? What is the difference between and trope and a stereotype? Sonal and Meg catch each other up on some adventures in Caucasia. And then they explore the damaging effects of 'the good girl' trope.
Once you truly master not giving a fuck, you get to the fun shit, choosing WHERE you give your fucks. Cause ‘not giving a fuck’ is not sustainable. You will burn bridges. Sonal and Meg have burned many. It’s a lot of work to rebuild. And the restoration of harmony is much harder when trust is broken! So you can’t ever truly ‘not give a fuck,’ or you are probably Steve Jobs. In that case, go for it. He had a pretty bad relationship with his family. So did Gandhi! His kids hated him, and would have loved for his fucks to be directed towards them. Even a couple fucks.
We weave each other into these tapestries of lies! One episode is not enough, we will probably have to return to the very subjective topic of truth. Meg and Sonal are huge liars, mainly to their parents though... which is ultimately for their own good... right?
Being an ally is pretty complicated! How do we use our voices for good? When is it better to stfu and listen? We are all fragmented into so many identities, Meg is an ally to Taylor Swift, Sonal is trying to be a good American. In this episode, we explore all the ways to represent!
Sonal never understood the five love languages until Meg used her deep political understanding to explain them to her. Which tyrannical world leaders are paired with which of the love languages? Happy Valentine's Day!
This is part two to last week episode, as we go deeper into the phenomenon of ghosting. We also talk about grieving celebrities. Maybe let the family grieve for a day before posting all your hilarious tweets.
Meg has been on the road for a month! Her travels continue to suggest there is a prophecy waiting for her in Madison, Wisconsin. Sonal explained to her Dad what 'ghosting' is.
Everyone's always asking Meg about her skin care routine! All 18 steps are revealed in episode 25! What do you guys think of when you hear self care? Mani pedi day at the spa? Self care is a constant practice and self love is work. Nobody teaches us about taking emotional responsibility for ourselves! It's a good thing you've got your Rage Rani's Meg and Sonal!
The language of touch! What is your level of fluency? Sonal and Meg get touchy in this episode of Rani Rage Radio!
Meg's sick! But the show must go on. Life goes on! What do we do when we are sick? WInter woes welcome lemon, ginger, honey, garlic, turmeric, and warm salt water as our new best friends. Indians are all self appointed doctors, yet we hate going to the doctor. Ah-choo! Here is to your health.
Welcome to a new decade, a new year, a new era... the roaring 20s! It's the 1st episode of the year 2020... AND this is episode number 22. How auspicious is that? There is no way we could not have planned that, so it must be a sign of all the good things to come, like this episode. Meg and Sonal discuss resolutions and set their intentions for the rest of the year and the decade. How do you let the baggage go? How do you move forward with peace in an election year during the climate apocalypse? Tune in and listen. Happy New Year!
That's a wrap on 2019 and the whole decade! Where were you in 2010? Meg was 16! And Sonal was still 84... no she was 26! So much has happened this past decade and this past year, Meg and Sonal cover it all. And we wish everyone a very happy and blessed holiday season. See everyone in 2020!
To be is to move. How is your relationship to your body? To movement? Do you think the concept of 'exercise' is ridiculous? Sonal does, and that's why she juggles. Dance like everybody is watching, when we move, we give everyone around us permission to move.
Social media is terrible! We love it, we hate it, we use it. Whether you're addicted or off the gird... please make sure to follow us on Instagram :) We are complaining about a system that is completely interwoven into our lives. Sonal recounts the glory days of Facebook, Meg has never had to go to an Internet Cafe. They discuss the importance of it for entertainment but question how it has made us question ourselves, our relationships, and what is real. What is the future for it? Should it be regulated? Can it just go back to cat videos and song lyrics?
Masculinity is actually great when it's not toxic! And anyone can be masculine, it's not for one gender. Meg & Sonal mansplain the problematic pressures men grow up with that creates entitlement and resentment, both in family and in the workplace. They discuss the recent murder of a woman in U Chicago and the rape in Hyderabad. What can we do to hold each other accountable? And why are women letting this toxicity slide? Do we have a solution. Maybe! This episode could end the toxicity!
What an auspicious time to drop an episode about mental health... it's Thanksgiving! Family means stress and often all the reasons we have so many mental health issues. Sonal and Meg discuss anxiety, depression, bipolar, the stigmas that comes with mental illness, and all their differences in opinion on this vast subject.
Fun is work. And work is...fun? EVERYTHING takes commitment and work. This podcast. Friendship. Dating. Meg and Sonal do an update to celebrate a stand up anniversary, discuss how fashion is used to express gender and identity, and what balance of fun and work looks like. Don't take it so seriously ;)
Traveling! People are scared to do it! Why??? DO IT! Go! Hit the road...go domestic or go abroad. Sonal and Meg dive into traveling without a plan and traveling with very detailed itineraries; traveling alone and traveling with people. And...banging for roof?
Dads. The ultimate protagonist and antagonists in our lives. Whether they left or stayed or stayed distant. They've given us so many bad jokes, butt dials, bad advice, and good advice. They taught us how to love and have sacrificed much for us. But how does that relationship affect all our other relationships?
Put on your sari, it's time to celebrate Diwali. It's festival season, and there is a lot of celebrating happening. Halloween, Dusshera, Samhain... and Diwali, the festival of lights. May the light overcome the darkness! And may we never forget the significance of the darkness, because without the darkness we would be unable to perceive the light! Meg and Sonal explore what they know and what they don't know about the festival of Diwali. Is it like Christmas? No, no it's not. It's its own thing. Happy Diwali!
Mom. Amma. Ma! This is the mother of all episodes. Mothers are the ultimate rage ranis. They carried us, they created us and they won’t let us forget it for a moment. But it’s the single most difficult relationship in your life, it’s toxic and beautiful, stressful and loving, and it grows over time. Meg and Sonal discuss their own mothers’ power and faults, what is expected of an Indian mother, and how marriage and dating has created both conflict and space for progress. Jai Mata di!
From the moment an Indian girl is born, the word "marriage" is branded onto her psyche. Challenged by the old traditions while liberated by the new world views, Sonal and Meg share wedding wonders and woes. Can arranged marriage still be successful in 2019? Why are love and marriage so inextricably linked and yet so different? Can someone DM their biodata and marry Sonal?
We are back! We disappeared for two weeks, and the internet almost collapsed completely! Did anyone even notice our absence? When we scale out, everything IS fine and exactly where it needs to be, but when are in the heat of uncomfortable moments, we struggle and squirm to escape back to a place where 'It's Fine.'
"So, how did you get into stand-up?" the age old question that comics are asked over and over again. Our RaRaRanis share their journeys into stand up. Every time someone asks us how we got into stand up, we are going to send them here. So if this is your first time to the podcast, welcome! Meg and Sonal discuss how to get started, how to get better, the work behind comedy, and "PC culture."
You can meditate to this episode. We are turning the gaze inside. Whether you're hindu, muslim, gemini, leo, atheist, scientologist, scientist, or none of the above, there's beauty in admitting that you don't know and for some things, you'll never know. We believe so intensely in what we believe in, but do we choose to believe those things? Or are they chosen for us? Perhaps even by our own circumstances? And what happens if you don't believe in anything at all? Religion is not just an institution, it exists in so many other things around us. Meg & Sonal dissect their views on meditation, self-care, the yoga industry, religion, the zodiac, and objective truth.
It's that time of the WEEK for us to discuss our time of the month. Shh ;)We talk about the the thing that happens to all of us that we never talk about. Cramps, hormones, stigma, how Meg was banished into a corner, how Sonal offered moon blood to the earth, a special shout out to India's superhero PADMAN, mooncups, and MORE. Fellas, this is a great episode for you too! Score some points. Don’t act like y’all don’t manstruate! Listen up because we all bleed.
We're choking on Chopras this week. Meg & Sonal discuss the controversies shaking the brown world - Kashmir, Priyanka, Aziz. And talk about the brown icons blazing the way forward - Hasan, Mindy, Lilly. From "Crazy, Rich Asians" to queer culture to cancel culture to canceling cancel culture, they agree and disagree on pretty much all of it.
Breakups. Sadness. Depression. GOOD GRIEF! Haha get it? That's the point of this episode. Being thankful for the messy, hard, rough, truly deep dark times in our lives. Showing gratitude to the grief and letting it teach us lessons. Meg and Sonal discuss the downs. This one's perfect if you're having a bad day or ever had a bad day! This won't help you get over. It'll help you get through it.
Meg is SINGLE! Slide into her DMs (respectfully). Sonal & Meg discuss the age-old topic of LOVE. They look back at past relationships, and talk about the confusion of dating without being taught about love, arranged marriages, the relationship to self, and even their first time losing the big V and getting the big O ;) SAUCY! Seriously, if you're a judgmental aunty reading this, listen to our other episodes about identity.
Don't call ICE. One of us is an immigrant...kind of? People should be able to project the identity they want to identify with without having to defend themselves against the identities projected onto them. Do you guys identify with that? Sonal and Meg are in studio for this episode, breaking down their brownness, what it means to be an ABCD and an FOB, some super secret tips to have fun at an Indian wedding, and why being "undocumented" is not a thing.
It's body talk time! Meg & Sonal discuss the culture of covering up, their cheerleader pasts, and release their 2nd episode filmed live where they reveal how they discovered their booty for the first time.
Meg & Sonal are both stand-up comedians in Chicago who are 10 years apart in age. One is a FOB (fresh off the boat) and one is an ABCD (American born confused desi). Both discuss anger, how it's weaponized but also how it can be freeing, how it's shunned in different cultures and for different genders but also how it can be a tool to dissect the true problem.
