Get ready for a brain buster. Or at least prepare to witness my brain being busted. Celtic mythology is... tricky to understand. And no one understands perfectly because the source material is scarce.  A LOT has been written about Celtic mythology but so much of it is conjecture presented as fact. The ancient Celts themselves didn't write anything down. Their enemies did. As did the Catholic monks who came to island to conquer a people the Roman army could not. Today we familiarize ourselves with Ireland - land most associated with the Celts and find out why Ireland is most strongly associated with Celtic culture when Celtic tribes lived as far away as Asia Minor. Who were these people? What did they believe? Why don't we know more about them? And what the Hell is a Selkie, Spriggan, or a  Dullahan?  So much mystery and madness explored today. The Bad Magic Charity of the month is Love Thy Neighbor! We'll  be giving $15,500 to this Denver-area based 501(3c) nonprofit dedicated to working with local businesses to hand out free food to the homeless. Haunt Jaunts
S3 Ep3: Making Merry: Night of the Living Christmas Decorations

Haunt Jaunts

December is often called the most wonderful time of the year. But did you know that the Winter Solstice, which happens during December, is the second most haunted time of the year too? Samhain, or Halloween, is the first. The hauntings that happen during Halloween aren't the same as the ghosts that come to visit during the Christmas season/Winter Solstice, though.  Samhain ghosts are more the dead in general coming back, whereas Yule hauntings are much more Dickens-esque. Like Marley and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future, Winter Solstice hauntings have a purpose and some link to the season's death/rebirth theme. And while telling scary stories is a popular activity commonly associated with Halloween, it's also an ancient Yuletide tradition. One that we partake in in this episode.  "Making Merry: Night of the Living Christmas Decorations,” is a short fiction story I wrote once upon a Christmastime long, long ago. It's not exactly a ghost story, but it does have some horror elements to it, so it does fall into the scary story realm. And because it's a tale of merriment, mischief, judgment, redemption, and love set during the Christmas season, it's definitely appropriate for the Yule season.   Storyline Teenagers Kyle and Justin come to regret their decision to get into some spirited mischief by vandalizing and sabotaging all of the Christmas decorations in their neighborhood. Especially when the decorations seek retaliation and retribution --and not even Santa can help them. Listener Discretion Advised There aren't a lot of bad words in this story, but there are a few, so it's not appropriate for younger listeners. Also, Santa Spoiler Alert! (His true identity is discussed.)   Want more Haunt Jaunts? Jaunt with us online anytime at HauntJaunts.net. 00:05Welcome to Mosaic, your Novant Health podcast for diversity, inclusion and equity. You'll learn more about the mosaic of similarities and differences that make us stronger, and how health equity benefits us all. Piece by piece. We're telling the stories of the beautiful mosaic of Novant Health. 00:25Hello again, this is Becky Knight coordinator of Novant Health 14 business resource groups. Business resource groups, or BRG's, are an important part of the Novant Health diversity inclusion and equity strategy. A BRG is a voluntary group of team members organized around an aspect of common identity, such as age, race, ethnicity, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation or veteran status. The groups work together to support each other our business in diversity and inclusion strategies and constituency needs. One of the themes over the past year has been for our BRG's to host webinars to highlight holidays and observances that have special meaning to them. These webinars are an accessible way for our team members to share about their traditions, beliefs and culture. And it lets us get to know each other better, and to be able to better understand and anticipate the needs of our patients and communities. And this episode of mosaic, we'll hear from several Novant Health BRG members, sharing about Dia de los Muertos. samhain, Transgender Day of Remembrance, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa. 01:37First we have David Avalos, sharing about Dia de los Muertos. 01:43Dia De Los Muertos basically is a custom, it's a custom that is derived from an old ancient Aztec custom. And then there has been some influence from the Catholic Church. So Dia De Los Muertos is translated into Day of the Dead here in the United States. Death is something that's very grim and solemn and sad. And that is not the way they view death in Mexican culture. So day of the dead is really a celebration. So it's a celebration of life, it's to honor your ancestors that have moved on, or that have passed away. So we're here in the States people are kind of solemn and sad, and tend to wear dark clothes and things of that nature. In Mexican culture, it's very loud and vibrant and colorful. So there's, there's a lot of beauty involved with the celebration of this Day of the Dead, you're going to hear later on about Samhain and how on that day, there's this veil that's between our world and the spirit world. And it is believed that the veil is thin during this time. So it allows spirits to enter into our world. And that's not a scary thing in Spanish culture. That's something where these are your ancestors. This is your family. So you want to welcome them. So that's why they have these altars with offerings and they have celebrations and parties and they usually cook food and the food that they cook is usually what that relative's favorite meal was. So um, Day of the Dead you all will probably know it as All Saints Day or All Souls Day. So we celebrate it on November first and November second. So November 1 is technically believed that's when the children who have passed come back to visit and celebrate. They call them on angelitos, which means little angels. And then on the following day, November 2, that's when the adults turn up for the festivities. They don't call them the angels, they call them the deceased, they call them difuntos. Family members usually will prepare for several weeks in advance for this summer celebration, creating their offerings and decorating their altars and things of that nature. 04:08Next, Willette Balsamo speaks about Samhain. 04:12You know it, most people know it, as Halloween. Here are some of the other names, there are many. All Hallows Eve, Samhain, it's hard to pronounce. A lot of the a lot of things come from Celtic, or Irish, if you will, Scotland, The Isles the British Isles. A lot of it came from them. Also Egypt. There's many many histories of where Wiccans, more modern version of witchcraft. But it was also practice in China. So everybody's got their own little twist on this. So the pronunciation is pronounced “sow win” like s-o-w  like a Mama Pig, or “sow ween.” The meaning of that. There's a couple of beliefs that it means summer's end, while others find that called fire of peace, and a lot of that has to do with the bonfires and the harvest, it's also called third harvest, spirit night, hollow mass, Mischief Night, probably heard that, ancestor night and more. And it's also during this time that we open our hearts and our bodies to death. We honor those that have died whenever it's usually those this year, but it doesn't matter you can honor whomever you wish. We acknowledge sorrow and loss. We believe in an afterlife. We also believe in rebirth or reincarnation. 05:58Our coexist and pride BRGs co hosted a webinar for Transgender Day of Remembrance. Here is Nick Stewart. 06:06Began over 20 years ago, Transgender Day of Remembrance is observed to focus on the persistent struggles, transgender people face in their everyday lives, and how others can share their love, support and hope. Today, we especially remember those who in the past year, have lost their lives as a result of transphobia and anti transgender violence. We come together to acknowledge that all people of all identities are welcome in our organization, in our facilities, and in our communities. We recognize today that some face violence and hatred simply for being who they are. We gather against acts of exclusion, anger and hate. And we respond with remembrance, hope, and love. We come together from different backgrounds, origins, groups and disciplines to intentionally remember that we are one humanity, and that all people are created beautifully. We stand together for those who have died for their families, and for those among us who identify as transgender, that they might know that they are not alone, that we stand with them, and that they are loved. 07:20Now we'll learn about Hanukkah from Marcia Lampert.  Hanukkah is a holiday that's really mostly based on folklore. It's not what we would consider a holy day. Our holy days are around the Jewish New Year Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, well, and Passover as well. So this is really a holiday that celebrates a bright message and a theme and allows us to celebrate freedom. The word Hanukkah means rededication. And that was the story in 2000 BC that a group of people destroyed the temple. And when they destroyed the temple, the eternal flame, there was not enough oil for the flame to continue more than one day. But miraculously, it went on for eight days. We go by like Muslim, we go by the lunar calendar, so it's never the same day every year, but it usually ends up in December. For eight nights, we light the candles and we say a prayer. And we also very much in the theme of everything we do we always eat. So we are always eating during holidays, foods that symbolize something. But in Hanukkah, because of the oil, the oil from the temple that lasted for eight days. The foods that we generally eat our homemade potato pancakes, you know, in oil, and jelly doughnuts made an oil, very healthy. So a lot of gathering singing songs. Again, making it fun. But keeping the same of this light that lasted for eight days, how we were able to take back the temple and renew our faith.  Finally, you Vaughn Dixon shares about Kwanzaa. 09:21Beginning December 26, and lasting for seven days. Kwanzaa is a celebration of community, family and culture, established as a means to help African Americans reconnect with their African roots and heritage. And there are three official Kwanzaa colors. Black, red and green. There are seven candles, one Black Candle, three red candles, and three green candles. Each candle represents one of the seven principles guiding Kwanzaa they are placed in a mission Masaba in a specific order, each candle is lit on a specific day of Kwanzaa of the seven day celebration. The Black Candle the principal represents you Mojo, which means the concept of unity is a focus on the unity of family, community, nation and race. This candle is always lit first on the opening day of Kwanzaa of which again is the 26th of December, day two is collegia Gulia, which is self determination is the second principle. It represents defining, naming, creating, and speaking for oneself. This is the second candle lit on day three, which is you Jama. This is the third principle and is defined as collective work and responsibility. This encompasses building and maintaining the community by working together, taking on each other's problems and solving them together. This is the third candle. The fourth candle is the principle of cooperative economics, you Jama. This encompasses building and maintaining individually owned stores, shops, and other businesses. This goal is to profit from these endeavors as a community so we're talking about socio economics and the community. This is the fourth candle lit. 11:34There are three green candles, each representing a specific principle. These candles are placed on the right of the Black Candle, and the last ones that are lit on day five, which is Nia Nia. This is the principle of purpose and takes on the collective vocation of building the community and developing it as a way to restore African Americans and pan Americans to their traditional greatness. This is the fifth candle that is lit on day six, which is Khumba KUUM. Ba this candle celebrates the principle of creativity. The goal of this principle is to do everything possible to make a difference and leave the community in better condition than what was inherited. This is the sixth candle that is lit. And finally on day seven, you Imani? I am a ni Imani. This is the crucible of faith. It challenges people to believe in each other and honor their struggle as righteous and that they'll be victorious. This is the last candle to be lit. All seven candles are lit on this particular day. 12:59Thanks for listening to mosaic your podcasts for diversity, inclusion and equity and Novant Health. Stay tuned for our next exciting episode.

This episode is on the Winter Solstice.  The Winter Solstice is one of eight annual Solar Festivals. The Winter Solstice is the shortest day of the year, marking the return of the Sun in the Northern Hemisphere. The Ancients and native cultures have always celebrated these Solar Festivals as powerful times that were worthy of ceremony. Fires were lit to honor the Winter and Summer Solstices, thus the tradition of lighting the Yule Log derives from our pagan ancestors. Theosophical teachings which emerged in the late 19th century, derived from the Vedic wisdom of India, predicted the increasing importance of honoring the full moon, new moon, equinox and solstice cycles during the coming Aquarian Age. Well we are now in that Aquarian Age, and any ceremony or ritual, prayer or mantra that we perform on December 21 will be empowered at this Winter Solstice. There is a primal urge in humankind to be rekindled, rebirthed and renewed at these seasonal Solar Festivals which include the two Solstices, two Equinoxes,  and four cross-quarter days, honored by our ancestors, indigenous, and pre-Christian pagans.  These days of honoring the Earth and Sun are in order of their procession in the Gregorian calendar are:  February 2, know as "Imbolc," also called Candlemas which is the half-way point between the winter solstice and Spring equinox in the northern hemisphere.  Then the Spring Equinox on March 21. Beltane, honors the fruits of the Spring in the Northern Hemisphere  on May 1st.  Followed by the Summer Solstice on June 21st, Lammas on August 1, Autumnal Equinox on September 21," Samhain," also known as All Souls Day on November 1, and Winter Solstice on December 21st.  Most of you may be familiar with the Vernal or Spring Equinox, Summer Solstice (check out my previous podcast,) Autumnal Equinox and Winter Solstice.  But the cross-quarter days celebrated by our indigenous and pagan ancestors are less known and they are Imbolc, Beltane, Lammas or Lughnassah, and Samhain or All Soul's day.The Winter Solstice provides a powerful time of year to bring in more Inner Light.  Any rituals, meditations, or spiritual prayers and practices at this time of year will help to empower an individual or group in the coming New Year.  One powerful practice is to chant the "Great Invocation," at these annual Solar festivals. The Great InvocationFrom the point of Light within the Mind of GodLet light stream forth into the minds of men.Let Light descend on Earth. From the point of Love within the Heart of GodLet love stream forth into the hearts of men.May Christ return to Earth. From the center where the Will of God is knownLet purpose guide the little wills of men –The purpose which the Masters know and serve. From the centre which we call the race of menLet the Plan of Love and Light work outAnd may it seal the door where evil dwells.Let Light and Love and Power restore the Plan on Earth.Book your 2022 astrology reading: www.jilljardineastrology.com

Friday, November 19 features the longest partial Lunar Eclipse in 580 years and the longest of this century at six hours total with its peak lasting 3 hours, 28 minutes.  At 97.4 percent, it is as good as a Total Lunar eclipse in effect and visuals. I see this Lunar Eclipse at 27 Taurus as THE big event of 2021 because of its extraordinary length of duration as well as its activation of the Pleiades and the North Node.  A Lunar Eclipse helps us leap timelines and accelerate our deepest desires and intentions as the Moon accomplishes in a few hours--all the phases from Full to New and back to Full--what would normally take nearly 30 days. The North Node supports positive forward momentum and the Pleiades are known to many indigenous people's as their original home star system.  The Pleiadians have been the source of some of the most illunimating channeled spiritual insight over the past century and are seen as strong guardians and advocates for humanity's evolution of consciousness and the wellbeing of planet Earth.Yet this Lunar Eclipse is not only a Moon of light and heart... any Lunar Eclipse by its nature will bring up light AND shadow as can be seen as we observe the reveal and illumination dance of the Earth's shadow upon the Moon's face.  This Eclipse also activates Algol, a fixed star of ill repute in ancient Europe, often called the "demon star" because of its location in the third eye of the head of Medusa as well as its strange twinkling pattern as an eclipsed binary star which, about every 68 hours blinks on and off for eight hours. I personally love this star and believe it points to the reality that we must become opened to the tenderness, the poignancy, the loss and pain of life if we are to become vessels as well for joy, delight, and pleasure.  So in this eclipse we find both medicines--much as the great Dream Healer Aesclepeus used the blood from Medusa's head to both heal and to take life.I speak much more in depth of this in my podcast here.  The three-day period surrounding the eclipse is a time of high magic and alchemy where the more space we can create for our dreams, visions, and practices of stillness and deep listening, the better.  Thursday evening and Friday morning especialy we benefit greatly when we take time and create the sacred context to hear our higher guidance. I have seen this as the Eclipse of Great Bounty and Sensual Delight as it lasts so long in the sign of Taurus.  In this Samhain season in the north where the wheel turns from fall to winter, the Full Moon in late Taurus reminds us of the abundance and sensual season of Beltane, moving from Spring to Summer.  Take time to savor the pleasure of life in this eclipse window and let your turning inward be toward gratitude and recieving of the pleasures of being fully alive.

Sift flour and salt into the bowl, and mix until it's smooth. Divide the dough into two parts, and shape each half into a flat circle about half an inch thick. Transfer to a parchment-lined baking sheet and, using the tines of a fork, press perforations into the disc from one side to the other in the spokes of a wheel, like a pie. Make 8 wedges on each disc. This will make it easier to break apart once it's baked and cooled. Bake for 25 minutes or until light brown. Welcome to the final episode of Magic Month here on the Sunday Soother! I hope you have so enjoyed the wonderful guest interviews and my takes on magic. In this last episode,  I talk about the magic that can be found in connecting with your ancestors, beginning to heal ancestral traumas, and finding your place in the chain of the universe by understanding your place in your ancestral lineage. In today's episode, I give examples of how ancestral connections relate to magic; three stories of how I have connected with my ancestors; and then share several practical tangible ideas about how you can begin your own ancestral work.  After all, today is Samhain, and this time of the year is one in many cultures where the veil is considered thin and we are more easily able to connect with and honor our ancestors. Living Myth
Episode 251 - Mysteries of Darkness and Light

Living Myth

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 27, 2021 29:43

This episode of Living Myth offers a reflection on time and timelessness and the deep understandings behind ancient rituals that marked the beginning of the dark season of the year. To be modern means to be lost and running out of time; to be careening towards an uncertain future and increasingly dislodged from the past. Originally, time was not simply linear, but an alteration of darkness and light, of night and day, like ocean tides that swing to and fro over the body of the earth. Once separated from the tides and lunar cycles, time began to march on rather than flow. Having lost any connection to the eternal, time becomes a process of loss, a losing proposition, wherein each passing moment simply disappears, lost forever, dismissed by the next moment as time floods faster and faster, with no hint, much less a promise of any redemption. As we approach the time of turning the clock back a single hour, what we really need is to turn back far enough to touch timeless things again. That's what ancient people used to do at the beginning of the dark time of the year. Since darkness was there at the very beginning, turning to darkness meant returning to the moment when light appeared and time began. Between the light half the year and the beginning of the dark half, there fell a timeless moment, a little drop of eternity that could begin the next cycle of life. That's what was hidden in the darkness, an unlimited space, a moment of dark gestation that was able to renew time and revitalize life again. So, people would turn to the mystery of darkness and to timeless rituals whenever the earth grew dark again. Not turning the clock back an hour, but turning people's imagination all the way back to the beginning of time to touch the mystery of darkness turning into light and of death turning back into life. The dark season was when the spiritual world became more visible to humans. Darkness shaped the doorway to the Otherworld which opened wide as the spirits and the soul of the dead mingled with the presence of the living. That was the origin of Samhain (sawain), the remains of which people now call Halloween. We see wispy remnants of the ancient connections between the dead and the living in the costumes of children dressed as ghosts or skeletons or even the Walking Dead on Halloween night. We can see it with greater clarity in the bone memories and intense creations of Dia de los Muertos. Celebrations of the Day of the Dead go back over 3000 years in Mexico and Central America and now appear, seemingly revitalized, in North America. As if some ancient understanding is trying to catch up to us and reconnect us to the mysteries of darkness and light, to a deeper sense of life and death and timelessness.   Ancient peoples from around the world saw death, not simply as a dead end, but also as part of the continuous, indelible cycle of the renewal of life. Even now, the sense of the light hidden in darkness remains so close that it takes but a moment to connect to the ancient mysteries. Simply allowing the movement of sorrow in the heart and in the body can open the doorway between the worlds. The simple act of accepting loss can connect us to the “dark interval” where light and shadow, life and death become reconciled as the song goes on, resonant in us, beautiful in the earth, tender in the sorrow of songs and in the dreams that keep pouring timelessness into each moment of life on earth.   You can hear Michael Meade live by joining his new online workshop “Healer, Mentor, Elder, Guide” on Saturday, November 13.  Register and learn more at mosaicvoices.org/events.  You can save 30% on this workshop and further support this podcast by becoming a member of Living Myth Premium.   Learn more and join this community of listeners at patreon.com/livingmyth.   We'd love to hear your feedback on the podcast.  You can leave a review wherever you listen or send a question or comment to info@mosaicvoices.org.
