The Wise Little Hen', the Silly Symphonies short from was released on 9th June, 1934 and introduced a new Disney character: Donald Duck. With his distinctive strangled quacking (born from the unique talents of Clarence Nash - a man who'd spent his childhood mimicking barnyard sounds), Donald's hot-tempered, accident-prone slapstick sensibilities brought a welcome unpredictability to the sanitised world the studio had constructed around their hero, Mickey Mouse. But Donald wasn't just a cartoon character. He soon became a symbol of resilience during World War II, when he starred in morale-boosting shorts like Donald Gets Drafted - and even donned a swastika to parody Nazi Germany in the Oscar-winning Der Fuehrer's Face. In this episode, The Retrospectors unpick the particular appeal of Donald's vain, cocky, and boastful appearances; explain why it took years for him to truly earn his iconic sailor's outift; and reveal how Duck Tales has its roots in military service… Further Reading: • ‘A Duck for All Seasons' (The Washington Post, 1984): https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/lifestyle/style/1984/06/24/a-duck-for-all-seasons/36253ddd-a547-47ab-9c50-b0ff696f707e/ • ‘50-Year Career : Clarence Nash, Donald Duck's Voice, Dies' (Los Angeles Times, 1985): https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1985-02-21-mn-619-story.html • 'The Wise Little Hen' (Disney, 1934): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLFyNRuEkCM Love the show? 80s TV Show fans, this one's for you!
"Ye intruders beware.Crushing death and grief,Soaked with blood,Of the trespassing thief."With that ominous passage inscribed upon a map, the timeless adventure of The Goonies begins. And what an adventure it is! Equally influenced by golden age of Hollywood swashbuckling pirate movies like Michael Curtiz's Captain Blood, vintage movie serials that also inspired the likes of Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Carl Barks' classic Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge comics, The Goonies is almost a literal thrill-a-minute film. Packed with (sometimes literal) cliffhangers, subterranean mazes, maps, mysteries, and traps. So many traps! The kinds of traps you might associate with classic Scooby-Doo cartoons but brought to live action with stunning realism and peril all with a Rube Goldberg flair. Traps that wouldn't be out of place in producer Spielberg's Indiana Jones franchise, made all the more perilous because it's a cast of kids being put in danger. So when it came time for us to think up a concept to celebrate the (wanna feel old?) 40th anniversary of The Goonies, we had two choices: It was either the traps or how it's possible that Cyndi Lauper could turn what could have very easily have been a mediocre soundtrack cash-in like “The Goonies ‘R' Good Enough” into a piece of songwriting perfection…or the traps. We went with the traps. And considering how much ancient history is riddled with real life deathtraps, well…you might be surprised at what we find when we start delving in to the mechanisms of these devices. It's not just whether they work…it's whether they would still work hundreds of years later!Watch the latest episode of Does it Fly? right here…if you're good enough…https://youtu.be/-b-Pm2yTHYMSUGGESTED VIEWING Seen The Goonies? Good, go watch it again. Haven't? Go watch it twice. You can thank us later. But also, you might want to check out a couple of other ‘80s classics that are part of this film's DNA. The Goonies falls somewhere on the spectrum between Steven Spielberg's (who produced this film) all-timer Raiders of the Lost Ark and Rob Reiner's R-rated coming of age quest movie Stand By Me. You might also want to check out The Monster Squad as a film which tried to mimic this movie's magic in a different context. And of course, its legacy is felt pretty keenly in Stranger Things…FURTHER READING Do you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Of course you do!There are two key ingredients to the traps as depicted in The Goonies, both of which are very rooted in real life: the legacy of Rube Goldberg and the actual security measures from ancient tombs and structures.Rube Goldberg MachinesYou might not realize it, but you know what a Rube Goldberg Machine is. If you ever saw a Looney Tunes cartoon where some absurdly complicated device with many steps performs a simple task (usually set to this distinctive music) then you're already familiar. And while reading about Rube Goldberg and his bizarre creations is one thing (which you can do here) you really should see them to get the full effect.“Tomb Security”The trope that everyone is familiar with thanks to everything from Indiana Jones movies to Pirates of the Caribbean to DuckTales is…mostly true! Maybe not in terms of giant boulders being triggered to roll over you, but in lots of other ways.Usually, these are depicted as part of some kind of “curse” that befalls would-be grave-robbers. Other times they are based in the very real discovery of what appear to be unfortunate human sacrifices. In all cases, these “security measures” are part of elaborate attempts to keep sacred sites undisturbed. And in one, there's even an “army” standing guard…if only they moved!WANT MORE FROM DOES IT FLY?The allegedly final installment of the Mission: Impossible franchise is in theaters now and we examined an iconic moment from its past!Final Destination Bloodlines is here and we went back to the very beginning to examine the central concept of the franchise. To follow up DuckTales, did Disney think bigger? Nope, they thought smaller. Rodent size, in fact, by returning Chip and Dale to prominence with a 65 episode run of high adventure in tiny spaces. It's pompous feline crime bosses, nefarious cults centered around soda, and one lady mouse that some people are still strangely fond of, all in this episode with special guest star Cary Woodham!

Jimmy A - What are you guys' thoughts and opinions on .257 Roberts? I have started a collection of lesser known and oddball cartridges and thought about adding a rifle in their caliber to it. Also, it seems like it would be a decent coyote, varmint, deer round for my farm in Southern Indiana. It seems somewhat similar to .243 Winchester but not near as readily available. What rifle do you suggest for this round? Thanks guys Ben B - I will be finishing an ar15 build in the near future. It will be a suppressed 14.5 5.56 and I want to put an adjustable gas block on it so it can be tuned. My question is what is the best AGB when you balance quality and budget? Stu Pidass - If you lost your non dominant hand and had to permanently replace it with a hand gun, which would you pick? Dutch Walker - Gentlemen, I'm going to build a .338 ARC and plan on shooting it suppressed. I have a Rugged Obsidian9, and it's the only can I have that has a large enough aperture to handle the .338. How confident would you be shooting subsonic rounds through it without damaging it? For reference, Rugged says it will handle a 300 BlkOut subsonic rounds. See you at GunCon. Aaron, you owe me $40. CD M - Ahoy boys, as we approach the sweaty time of the year I am returning to my summertime carry. The Keltec p32. My question relates to hollow points out of small barrels, are there any brands that would reliably expand? I have always just run FMJ out of mouse guns (if you can't expand, penetrate as deeply as possible), but would love to hear other opinions Harvey - Me being cheap Arken optics caught my eye. Seen two people not speak to highly but most reviews are good. One guy claimed they where buying you tube reviews. So anyone use one and have any expericance with it? Thinking of attempting a long range class with HEARTLAND PRECISION RIFLE since their range is close to me. But don't really have a big budget or great gun for it. The dorks couldn't come up with something to talk about this episode, so we asked the Pooligans in our Discord community for some ideas! Mycroft wanted to know if we had anything to say about building toys, from Lego to Gunpla, so we talked about that for a while. Then Pana was curious which cartoons we thought might be good to bring back for another run, sort of like DuckTales or She-Ra or any number of other excellent examples. And we spent WAY too long just talking about old cartoons. Don't blame us when you have to go look up old cartoon theme songs. Even though it's totally our fault. Come join us in the future! Carlos wore his chest-mounted camera and carried another device in his hand, ensuring he could record both video and audio while keeping his hands free. As he left suburbia and entered the forest, he took a walk break, passing towering Douglas firs and spotting the sign marking the entrance to his trail. He paced himself carefully, navigating wet rocks and winding trails, all while observing the well-drained terrain and the occasional fallen tree. Nearing Lohbrunner Pond, he set up his cameras to capture footage of feeding the ducks, tossing them oats as they eagerly approached. As they finished their meal, he signed off, saying, “No, I don't have any more for you today,” before packing up and heading back down the trail.https://www.spreaker.com/episo...

When those put those 2 together, you get games like Chip N' Dale and DuckTales. You also the occasionally-overlooked-but-really-solid Darkwing Duck. Let's get dangerous. This one definitely has a little more bite than some of the previous Capcom Disney games. Everyone told me there's a splash of Mega Man in this one, and I agree. Both because you can choose the order you tackle the levels in, and because it's gonna kill you a lot. But I rarely found it "cheap" tough. It was just one of those games that you keep playing and you get good at. Solid soundtrack, good graphics. My only real complaint is that I wish there was more of it. My buddy Bradley McCue returns to the show this week. And while we both kinda drop the ball when it comes to our Darkwing Duck knowledge (something I'm ashamed of because I love this show), we both agreed that Capcom was in the zone back in this era. And while we may not be convinced that DD belongs in the same conversation as DuckTales and Chip N' Dale, it's a game well worth your time. As long as you're not a controller thrower. And before we get dangerous, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks is I'd consider taking the VR plunge if tactical RPGs were VR experiences. Did I ever help my little brother beat games as a kid? And what comes first: Half Life 3, GTA 7, or world peace?? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 Disney NES classics: TaleSpin, Mickey Mousecapade, and The Little Mermaid. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Send us a textEver wondered if your childhood dreams of wealth have overshadowed the true blessings in your life? Join us as we explore the profound concept of spiritual generational wealth, inviting you to shift focus from material riches to eternal values that truly matter. In this thought-provoking episode, we reflect on our aspirations to be as wealthy as Uncle Scrooge from DuckTales and how these desires might detract from the spiritual fulfillment and joy that come from a deeper relationship with God. As we grow, the conversation naturally progresses towards the legacy we leave behind—not just in terms of material inheritance but also the spiritual heritage that shapes future generations. We are thrilled to welcome guest artist Aaron, who shares the inspiration behind his painting based on the parable of the talents from Matthew. Through his artwork and personal journey as a father and a Christian, Aaron highlights the vital elements of faith and family, reminding us of the importance of nurturing and teaching. Our discussion delves into the steadfast faith of biblical figures like Joshua, emphasizing the power of sacrificial love and the true value bestowed upon us by God, far beyond material possessions. Together, we ponder over the joy of entering into the master's presence and the transformative power of God's word in our lives. This episode also brings to light personal stories of faith and financial struggles during missionary work in France, demonstrating how the presence of God is the ultimate form of wealth. By comparing financial investments to spiritual growth, we encourage a mindset shift towards evaluating our spiritual 'return on investment' and fostering a Christ-like character for future generations. As we break cycles of brokenness and establish a legacy of faith, the sacrifices and commitments we make today can profoundly impact our children and grandchildren. Through prioritizing our relationship with God and being faithful stewards of His gifts, we lay the groundwork for a future filled with true fulfillment and spiritual prosperity.Cornerstonehttps://www.cornerstoneaz.org/Follow Jesushttps://www.cornerstoneaz.org/follow-jesusLife Groups https://www.cornerstoneaz.org/life-groupsGiving https://cornerstoneaz.churchcenter.com/givingChurch Center App - Download then add Cornerstone Christian Center in Avondale, AZiOShttps://itunes.apple.com/us/app/my-church-center/id1357742931?mt=8&ls=1&ign-mpt=uo%3D4Android https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ministrycentered.churchcenter----Instagram https://www.instagram.com/cornerstoneazFacebookhttps://www.facebook.com/cornerstoneaz.orgTwitterhttps://twitter.com/cornerstoneaz.org

Today we have a return visit from a friend of the show, the comedian and actor and voice artiste Ben Schwartz, who just happens to be Sonic in that new motion picture film called Sonic The Hedgehog 3 (out next week, December 21st, fact fans). He's also Jean Ralphio in Parks and Rec, Clyde Oberholt in House Of Lies, Dewey Duck in Ducktales… the list goes on and on. He's also the man behind touring improv super show “Ben Schwartz And Friends” and just so happens to think and speak supersuperfast, so expect an "all over the place" conversation between Ali and Ben - in a good way - as they talk about all sorts, including James Marsden in Jury Duty and what to do when an interview goes very, very wrong...

In this episode, we are taking you back a number of years to a lost episode! We spent some time many years ago speaking with Tad Stones, a Disney animator who worked for the company from 1974-2003. The problem is this edit fell through the cracks and went into podcast purgatory. We are here to resurrect it and get our conversation with Tad Stones out so you all can listen. This conversation begins with EPCOT Center and some of the different items he had his hands on. We get into World of Motion, Journey into Imagination, and more. The EPCOT perspectives from these early days are fascinating and surprising at the same time, as most of this is not the major highlight of Tad's Disney career. Tad also gets into a fun story about meeting George Lucas in the early 1980s, eating fried chicken, and even giving a little foreshadowing about the prequels. Either way, this is such a cool interaction and story that we are so excited to share with you. Tad has such a unique perspective on the early EPCOT years, digging into development, planning, and how it all came together. Tad has been a major part of Disney animation, which is one of his biggest claims to fame. Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers, Darkwing Duck, Adventures of the Gummi Bears, Ducktales, Hercules, & Atlantis are all credited to Tad, which is unbelievable if you think about it. While we were hoping to have Tad at RetroMagic back in 2023, we are hoping there is a chance we can have him at a future event so listeners can have the opportunity to meet him. While this episode has been many years in the making, we hope you all have enjoyed the time with Tad Stones.
