Pourtant, selon la physique moderne, le temps n'est pas un flux uniforme : il dépend de l'environnement dans lequel on se trouve. C'est pour cette raison qu'un même intervalle temporel ne s'écoule pas exactement de la même façon sur la Terre et sur Mars. La clé de ce phénomène réside dans deux concepts fondamentaux de la relativité d'Einstein : la gravité et la vitesse.Première différence : la gravité martienne. La théorie de la relativité générale nous apprend que plus la gravité est forte, plus le temps ralentit. Un objet posé sur une planète massive ou dense voit son horloge interne tourner légèrement plus lentement qu'un objet situé dans un champ gravitationnel plus faible. Or, Mars est beaucoup plus petite que la Terre : elle possède environ 11 % de sa masse et exerce une gravité presque trois fois plus faible. Résultat : le temps, sur Mars, s'écoule un peu plus vite que sur Terre. L'effet est minuscule à l'échelle humaine, mais parfaitement mesurable avec des instruments précis.Deuxième différence : la vitesse de déplacement dans l'espace. La relativité restreinte montre que plus un objet se déplace rapidement, plus son temps propre ralentit. Or, la Terre et Mars ne tournent pas autour du Soleil à la même vitesse :la Terre file à environ 30 km/s,Mars à environ 24 km/s.Comme la Terre va plus vite, son temps ralentit légèrement plus que celui de Mars. Là encore, l'effet est microscopique, mais il existe. Les ingénieurs doivent même en tenir compte pour synchroniser les signaux envoyés aux sondes martiennes, aux rovers, et aux satellites de navigation.À ces phénomènes relativistes s'ajoute une confusion fréquente : un jour martien n'a pas la même durée qu'un jour terrestre. Le “sol”, c'est-à-dire un jour martien, dure environ 24 heures et 39 minutes. Cela ne signifie pas que le temps s'écoule différemment au sens physique, mais que le rythme des jours et des nuits diffère, compliquant la synchronisation entre les équipes au sol et les robots sur Mars.En combinant ces facteurs — gravité plus faible, vitesse orbitale différente, durée du jour — on obtient un tableau saisissant : le temps lui-même n'est pas universel. Sur Mars, il s'écoule légèrement plus vite que sur Terre. Les horloges y avancent d'environ 477 microsecondes par jour. Un écart qui varie en plus au fil de l'année martienne.U ne différence imperceptible pour nos sens, mais cruciale pour la navigation spatiale, la précision des horloges atomiques et, demain, pour l'organisation de la vie humaine sur une autre planète.
