Bet kandidātu uz amatu, ko sauca superlatīvā vārdā par ģenerāldirektoru, gan bija daudz mazāk nekā mūsdienās – tikai divi. Mani bija ieteikusi Komponistu savienība, un otrs bija radio Brīvā Eiropa bijušais darbinieks no Minhenes. Izvēle krita uz mani, un arī Saeimas apstiprinājumā bijām tikai divatā – divatā ar ilglaicīgo Latvijas Radio inženieri, leģendāro Aigaru Semēvicu. No Saeimas deputātu puses agresīvākie bija mūžīgie jautājumi par Radio attieksmi pret krievu auditorijas apkalpošanu. Tūlīt pēc apstiprināšanas Saeimā bija jādodas pāri ielai uz Radiomāju, kuras ieeja vēl bija barikāžu akmens bluķu apkrauta. Valdība gaidīja no Radio radikālas pārmaiņas, bet iespaids bija tāds, ka Radio darbinieku vairākums strādā kā agrāk labi ieeļļota mašīna un pēc pārmaiņām netīko. Mans tuvākais palīgs un vietnieks bija minētais inženieris Aigars Semēvics, ļoti draudzīgs, izdarīgs cilvēks, un pārmaiņas bija viņa sirdslieta.    Mūsu Radio attiecības ar valsts varu iedibinājās dīvainas. Bija jāizliekas, ka esam patstāvīgs sabiedriskais radio, ko finansē sabiedrība pati, un tātad nevaram gaidīt no valdības nekādu īpašu atbalstu, un tomēr valdības pakļautībā bijām. Gandrīz vienīgās, toties nepārtrauktās attiecības ar valdību uzturēja nemitīgā finansējuma izkaulēšana, sevišķi budžeta pieņemšanas laikā. Finanšu jautājumu Radio darbībā papildus dramatizēja tas, ka mums bija jāfinansē tehniski raidošā iestāde, kurai piederēja radio viļņi, raidītāji, antenas un tā joprojām. Tas bija Valsts Radio un Televīzijas centrs, kurš noteiktu un nepārsūdzamu raidīšanas samaksu saņēma no Radio budžeta, nevis no valsts budžeta. Tas nozīmē, ka trūcīgajam Latvijas Radio budžetam bija katru gadu jārēķinās ar šo pastāvīgo atskaitījumu.                Ikreiz kaulējoties par finansējumu, valdībai nebija grūti mums pārmest sliktu darbu – ar ieganstu, ka tas atspoguļojoties raidījumu reitinga kritumā. Taču toreiz šis kritums bija neizbēgams privāto raidorganizāciju savairošanās dēļ. Tās varēja celt savus reitingus, iztopot klausītājam, nevis dodot tam patiesi vajadzīgo, kā pieklājās darīt mums. Mūsu radio finansiālā mazspēja nepārtraukti izvirzīja eksistenciālo jautājumu par Radio sastāvdaļu un koncertējošo vienību "būt vai nebūt". Pienāca brīdis, kad bija jāizvēlas par Radio kora vai Radio bigbenda algošanu, jo abus turpmāk uzturēt nebija iespējams. Radio bigbends bija nonācis vadības krīzē, uzaicinājām tam uz laiku pat viesdiriģentu no Somijas, sarīkojām viņa iestudētās programmas koncertu Lielajā ģildē, tomēr ekskluzīvi koncerti nevarēja kļūt par ikdienu, un bigbenda vadības krīze turpinājās. Nolēmām no bigbenda atteikties un paturēt Radio štatā kori. Šis koris meklēja arī pats ceļus savas eksistences uzturēšanai – ar privātiem koncertbraucieniem uz ārzemēm īrētos autobusos un dažkārt caurām naktīm. Atstājām Radio korim šo eksistences iespēju, neprasot gandrīz nekādas dividendes no viņa pieticīgajiem ienākumiem. Tikai tā tas izdzīvoja. Visai sarežģīta bija Radio saskare ar jauno mārketinga nozari – ar reklāmu. Visupirms kā starptautiskā kapitālisma greznu kārdinājumu mums nācās izjust kādas Francijas reklāmas aģentūras piedāvājumu pārņemt savā aprūpē visu Radio reklāmas nozari. Tās pārstāvji vairākkārt ar savu ierašanos šķietami pagodināja Rīgu, aicināja Radio vadību atraktīvās vizītēs uz Parīzi, lai par katru cenu iegūtu Radio reklāmas saimniecību savās rokās. Pēc iepazīšanās ar situāciju šo piedāvājumu noraidīju. Taču reklamēšana kā ienākumu avots kārdināja arī atsevišķās radio struktūras, raidījumu redaktorus. Nebija taču grūti raidījumā tīši vai arī it kā neviļus bilst labu vārdu par kādu firmu, ja par to varēja saņemt pa banknotei. Bieži vien uzaicinātie raidījuma dalībnieki par sevis reklamēšanu piedāvāja tā saucamo bartera darījumu. Tad nebija runa par naudu. Atceros gadījumu, kad barters tika piedāvāts visam Radio kā iestādei – proti, kāds cilvēks par savas firmas reklamēšanu piedāvāja vērtīgu un citā ceļā diezin vai iegūstamu Radio aparatūru. Nelikumīga bartera gadījumi, ko atsevišķas redakcijas sākumā uzskatīja par gluži dabīgu lietu, bija izskaužami vienīgi ar leģitīmas Radio reklāmas sistēmas iedibināšanu – galu galā izveidojām Reklāmas daļu ar savu darbības nolikumu, cenām, savu budžetu un ienākumu procenta atskaitījumu Radio budžetā. Bet pietiks runāt par naudu! Citā reizē stāstīšu, kā gāja ar disciplīnas ievērošanu Radio darbā tajos gados, kad brīvība noslīdēja līdz visatļautībai, un arī par garo ceļu līdz programmas "Klasika" ieviešanai.
