Henry Rollins. The man is a legend — especially for punk rock fans and record collectors — and The Dollar Bin podcast hosts Alan Brostoff (Dr. Disc) and Rev (frontman for The Drowns) are over the moon to talk to him about not only record collecting but his lifelong friendship with Ian MacKaye (Minor Threat, Fugazi and founder of Dischord Records) and being intensely involved in an archival project for The Cramps. Zoë and TJ break down what coaching actually is — the plan plus the relationship, communication, and buy-in that no model replicates — and dig into the research, including why studies lag behind the tools athletes are actually using, the 2025 analysis pointing toward hybrid human-plus-AI models, and why AI is a good summarizer but a poor authority. Before that, three rapid-fire segments: why you should hide the heart rate field while racing (and trust RPE instead of a signal that lags 30–90 seconds and gets polluted by heat, caffeine, and sleep debt), whether Hotshot actually fixes muscle cramps and side stitches or just floods your mouth with a sensory distraction, and how high humidity wrecks evaporative cooling, spikes your RPE, and slows your pace — plus why heat training isn't the biohack shortcut Instagram sells. Henry Rollins dives deep into the story of the Cramps, from his personal love of the band to being part of the resurrection of the record label, Vengeance Records.
bob Bert in conversation with David Eastaugh https://therealbobbert.bandcamp.com/album/beach-bongo-bloodbath Many music gourmandizers know the name “Bob Bert” from his stint as drummer for Sonic Youth in their formative years. He also beat car gas tanks for Pussy Galore. In the years since, Bob has recorded albums and toured the world with Bewitched, Action Swingers, Chrome Cranks, Knoxville Girls, Five Dollar Priest, and in more recent times Lydia Lunch Retrovirus, coming full circle playing metal percussion with fellow Pussy Galore alumnus Jon Spencer in his HITmakers. With Beach Bongo Bloodbath Bob finally steps out under his own name with his first true solo album. For this outing he mixes original material with extensive re-workings of a number of covers to create a veritable soundtrack for the B-movie of his life. Surprisingly for a guy who has slammed away for some very noisy guitar outfits, this album has absolutely NO guitars; once you hear his beat-centric take on Mountain's "Mississippi Queen," you will never hear that song the same way again. Bob creates a new world of sound utilizing a variety of drums and percussion as well as a diverse array of keyboards and theremin. The results suggest Sandy Nelson playing with the Flying Lizards on their greatest hits collection of Kraut Rock influenced Cramps covers! The six originals and eight covers play to his love of campy teenage horror flicks, art damaged punk fuk-u-ness and Warholian underground groover vibes. In fact, let's cue up some tracks from the album to help tell the Bob Bert story.

We talked about some of the strangest and coolest research topics in endurance sports for this episode! Basically, the science discussions went long, so we just ran with it.The main discussion was on how to stop cramps, laying out 10 theories. But put on your tin foil hats, because we think the cramping conspiracy runs deep. Our theory: cramping is connected to fatigue resistance is connected to all endurance performance, and thinking about cramp prevention might revolutionize all training theory even for athletes who never cramp. IT GOES DEEP!We also talked about a new missing link heat study, connecting altitude blood changes to long-term passive heat training. It was especially weird because the researchers were unsure of exactly why it happened. Those are the most fun study moments!Other topics: very short-term changes in fat max and fat oxidation (featuring the wildest figure we have seen in a long time), the difficulty of studies due to large error bars and small effect sizes, the crossover point in metabolic research, the incredible Dark Wizard documentary, and a question on relationships. For a clue about what was censored, here's the hint: I caught mommy [bleeping] [bleepa blaus].We love you all! Another year, another Overlook Film Festival, one of the premier genre festivals in the country. Unfortunately, this year, the main players of The Scariest Things were unable to attend the festival in person. Eric was able to get some of the films to stream, but, as is the norm, remote screeners were limited and did not include the showcase films. Fortunately for us, one of our loyal Patreon Contributors, Robin Marcotte, was in attendance again, and she helped fill in the gaps we missed. This year, there were a number of good films, and according to Robin, one GREAT film. This year, we watched fourteen films and thirty shorts. Give our recap a listen to hear our thoughts on the 2026 Overlook presentation. It pains me not to attend Overlook. It is one of my favorite events every year, but this doldrums economy forced me to be cautious with my funds, so I resorted to reviewing their films remotely. The pandemic spoiled stay-at-home movie critics, as nobody could attend festivals in person. All the films were remote. The times have reverted back, however, and one of the poorly held secrets is that film festivals rarely ever make their centerpiece films available for remote review. SXSW, Sundance, Overlook… the bigger films just don’t get the distributor go-ahead. However, some independent films were made available, and that was true for 2026. Fortunately for us, one of our valued Patreon patrons, Robyn Marcotte, was, as usual, in attendance, as she is a New Orleans local. Shockingly, many of the releases with known quantity actors and/or directors failed to connect with Robyn. Proof positive that The Scariest Things is not a shill for festival darling films! Still, there were a number of gems worth watching. Films we were able to cover: Obsession, directed by Curry Barker Hokum, directed by Damian McCarthy Leviticus, directed by Adrian Chiarella American Dollhouse, directed by John Valley Buffet Infinity, directed by Simon Glassman Chili Finger, directed by Edd Benda and Stephen Helstad Cramps! James VanOsdol sits down with J. and Greg from the Chicago/Los Angeles hybrid band Man's Body. They dive into the creation of their latest release, For All the Jailhouse Chess Masters, a project that marks a shift toward a more political and collaborative songwriting process for the group. Highlights: The sound of 'Gestalt rock': J. and Greg discuss the evolution of their sound and how their new five-piece lineup has solidified their musical identity since forming in 2016. For All the Jailhouse Chess Masters: A look at the new 12 inch EP, which is limited to a run of only 100 copies on vinyl and features a double-sided insert with hidden "Easter eggs." Political and personal themes: The band discusses the heavy inspiration behind specific tracks, including the anti-establishment sentiment of American Fire Sale and the deeply personal processing of grief in Crazy Person Song. The banality of the 9-5: A breakdown of Artless and Working Blues, a song that captures the soul-crushing experience of corporate life, specifically the dreaded "cake in the break room." Vinyl nerdiness: James, Greg, and Jay bond over their record collections, discussing everything from Gary Numan and The Cramps to the influence of Kid Congo Powers. The live experience: Why the band views a live performance not as a series of individual songs, but as a single, continuous "roller coaster" that allows for a unique form of self-actualization. EVENT NOTICE: James VanOsdol will be spinning local music at Gallery Cabaret on Wednesday April 22nd (2020 N. Oakley)! ## Car Con Carne is sponsored by Exploding House printing. Episode 3307: Kate Galliett reveals that muscle cramps are less about salt and hydration and more about your nervous system's unfamiliarity with certain movements. By training your body to explore new ranges and improve mind-muscle communication, you can reduce cramping, build resilience, and move with more freedom. Read along with the original article(s) here: https://fitforreallife.substack.com/p/why-do-muscle-cramps-happen Quotes to ponder: "You cramp because your brain and body aren't communicating well yet. And you can change that." "You must teach your nervous system how to better communicate with your tissues." "It's very likely that in the bed scenario, your foot was already pointed forward in plantarflexion, shortening the muscles on the bottom of your foot." Learn more about your ad choices.
