Bernie Madoff wasn't just good at making money disappear—he was a master at making people believe in financial magic. But when the 2008 financial crisis hit, his house of cards came tumbling down, revealing the largest Ponzi scheme in history and leaving everyone from Kevin Bacon to cancer research charities holding the bag.Brent Pella (Wildin' Out, Good Trip) and Joey Dardano (The Method, Help from a Hypocrite) join Misha to do an in-depth accounting of the Bernie Madoff storyBe the first to know about Wondery's newest podcasts, curated recommendations, and more! Eugenia Bone previously appeared on the show to talk about her books, The Kitchen Ecosystem: Integrating Recipes to Create Delicious Meals and Mycophilia: Revelations from the Weird World of Mushrooms. It's been ten years since her last time with us, and today, we'll be discussing her most recent title Have a Good Trip: Exploring the Magic Mushroom Experience which is published by Flat Iron Books. A note, the possession and use of psilocybe mushrooms is illegal in most of the United States, including Book Talk's home state of Tennessee. A couple of states are exploring medical usage of them and several, mainly college towns, have decriminalized possession. These are the early days of scientific research, and Book Talk makes no claims on their efficacy, and strongly warns against possession and use where such is in violation of the laws of one's jurisdiction.

This summer, we are revisiting our extensive archives, curating a selection from over 300 past episodes. This collection will feature memorable moments, insightful interviews, and some of the team's favorite episodes, providing new listeners and long-time fans an opportunity to explore or rediscover the best of Green Rush. Stay tuned for the upcoming launch of our new podcast in the fall, "Alternatively Speaking." This week, we're bringing back our conversation with Emmy-winning Writer, Producer, and Director Donick Cary. Well known in the television and film industry for his work on shows like The David Letterman Show, The Simpsons, Silicon Valley, and Parks and Recreation, Donick is also the writer and director of the Netflix hit, Have a Good Trip. This documentary mixes comedy with a thorough investigation of psychedelics, exploring the pros, cons, science, history, future, pop cultural impact, and cosmic possibilities of hallucinogens. It also includes some of the best psychedelic trip stories from celebrities like Sting, Sarah Silverman, Ben Stiller, A$AP Rocky, and the late greats Carrie Fisher and Anthony Bourdain. Our host Lewis sat down with Donick to discuss his film in greater depth, including what drew his attention to psychedelics, his inspiration for developing a documentary around stories of psychedelic trips (and how he sold that idea to Netflix), his own introduction to psychedelics, and whether he's turned to psychedelics to help deal with the anxiety caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Donick is one of the most talented writers in Hollywood, and it was a real treat to have him join us to discuss his journey. So don't sit back, lean forward, and enjoy! About Filmmaker and Writer Donick Cary: Emmy-winning Writer, Producer, and Director Donick Cary got his start writing for Late Night with David Letterman. He continued writing for Dave at The Academy Awards (but not the Oprah-Uma joke) and served as both Head Writer and "The Guy in the Bear Suit" on Late Show with David Letterman. After five years in late night, Cary moved to The Simpsons, where he served as a Co-Executive Producer for seasons seven through eleven, winning an Emmy and penning many memorable episodes including “D'oh-in in The Wind,” “In Marge We Trust” (Mr. Sparkle), and “Hell Toupee” (Homer gets the hair transplants of a killer). durée : 00:54:21 - Very Good Trip - par : Michka Assayas - Sixième étape de l'exploration de l'œuvre des Rolling Stones avec aujourd'hui la face soul, voire funky, d'un groupe dont la musique, c'est ce que je m'emploie à mettre en lumière, ne s'est jamais limitée au blues et au rock'n'roll.
Get your popcorn ready, people. Today, I sit down with one of my favorite comedians and social media creators, the incredibly talented and hilarious Brent Pella. Brent is a stand-up comedian and filmmaker who's taken the internet by storm with his hilarious and often biting parodies on spirituality, health/wellness, and American politics. Known for his spot-on celebrity impressions and his role in MTV's Wild 'N Out, Brent's comedic genius offers a unique lens through which we can view and laugh at ourselves and the world around us. Brent's humor isn't just about punchlines – it's about sparking joy, thought, and conversation – by poking fun at relatable and relevant issues. In this episode, we crack open Brent's approach to comedy, his creative process, and how his personal biohacking habits and spiritual beliefs inspire his work. We then reveal some behind-the -scenes development of his hottest material, especially his viral impressions of figures like CA governor Gavin Newsom and Joe Rogan. We touch on his upbringing with an open-minded, Deadhead mom, and how this influenced his perspective and comedic voice. We also explore Brent's personal journey with plant medicine and psychedelics, and how these experiences have shaped his consciousness and creativity. From microdosing psilocybin to his deep dives with ayahuasca, Brent shares candidly about the challenges and insights gained from these practices and the advice he'd offer to future voyagers.Along the way, we tackle topics like the importance of humor for mental health, the impact of government propaganda, and the erosion of trust in mainstream media – plus, his thoughts on whether anything should be off-limits in comedy. Make sure to check out Brent's comedy special on YouTube, see him live if he comes to a venue near you, and check out his podcast, Good Trip, for a good laugh and a healthy dose of self-satire.DISCLAIMER: This podcast is presented for educational and exploratory purposes only. Nevada lawmakers are discussing a bill that would decriminalize psychedelics like shrooms and ketamine. Advocates argue that this will help open the door for more research on psychedelics' clinical uses in mental health. But what's the experience of using psychedelics really like? Perhaps no one is more qualified to talk about this than Shane Mauss — he's a comedian, science podcaster, and self-described psychonaut who has been exploring the world of psychedelics (bothfirst-hand and through interviews and research) for over 20 years now. And on the heels of his 111-city tour of “A Good Trip,” Shane is now bringing a new art and video-filled special called “A Better Trip” to Area15, for a residency starting April 23rd. Co-host Dayvid Figler and Shane sit down to talk about how Shane's views on psychedelics have evolved, his own mental health journey, and what Nevadans should know about psychedelics as we debate their decriminalization. Do you think Nevada should decriminalize psychedelics? Have you had a good trip or a bad trip you want to share? Composer/singer/songwriter Mary Edwards returns for her second visit to the show and this time, you better bundle up because she's taking us on a trip to the arctic to listen to glaciers, wind, water and more. I mean, sure, this is a podcast so of course we should be listening but we're gonna listen to a glacier? Sorta, sorta not, what we're gonna do is hear Mary's good travels up to the northern most part of our world to record and then compose one of her original soundscapes that's all focused on nature and planet Earth. This is a good adventure you didn't even know was possible and Mary is the perfect tour guide. Best part is you don't have to bring a coat to enjoy her good story.
