There's something happening in the retail world and it's becoming more noticeable ... "the drop." This sales tactic, relies on releasing a limited-edition product, collection, or service without much advance warning. The idea is to create hype around the drop thus, facilitating a sense of urgency to buy due to the perceived scarcity of the offer. Whew. That's a lot of fancy business words. In short, this Drop Culture, has been around for a long, long time. And we're seeing more and more of this type of strategy and marketing because ... it works. In fact, pairing the Drop Culture with today's advertising on Social Media, makes for one super-effective way to reach current and prospective customers and clients. But can "the drop" work for every business? Is it sustainable? Listen to the podcast to hear our thoughts and how we've used "the drop" to drive revenue. Back in the stone ages … 1989, Stephen Covey wrote a book called, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, and it had a profound impact on the world, selling 25 million copies in 40 different languages worldwide. Covey coined the idea of having an abundance mentality, which means you believe there’s always enough resources, ideas, or paths to success for everyone. Success and abundance will never run out or become scarce. What are these 7 habits? Here’s the cliff notes if you haven’t read the book yet … 1. Be proactive- achieve extraordinary results by consistently executing with resourcefulness and initiative to break through barriers 2. Begin with the end in mind- develop an outcome-oriented mindset in every activity you engage in 3. Put first things first- eliminate energy and time-wasting tendencies by focusing and executing on your team’s wildly important goals with a weekly planning 4. Think win-win- lead teams that are motivated to perform superbly through shared expectation and accountability process 5. Seek first to understand, then be understood- create an atmosphere of helpful give-and-take by taking time to fully understand issues, and give candid and accurate feedback 6. Synergize- use teamwork to achieve your goals 7. Sharpen the saw- continuous improvement But back when this book was written … about 29 years ago … it was really meant for men in business. Totally fine. But what are the 7 habits of highly effective women today? I’m sorry, but when I hear the term “life hack” it makes me want to hit my head against the wall. Has life become so difficult that we need to “hack” it to make it through the day? Whatever happened to making smart choices or educated decisions as we navigate our lives? When did we start ignoring wisdom and think that we can “hack” our way through problem-solving like we’re computers or robots? But the thing that really bugs me about these so-called “life hacks” is that they offer a false sense of security. Use this hack and … you’ve got it. No worries. You’ve hacked it! Sorry, that’s not how life or business work. There isn’t a prescribed way to go about anything. Every problem requires a unique solution. And making mistakes often leads to big success. Today we’ll be talking about how life hacks will rob both you and your business of actually making good decisions. In the business of fitness, there is a segment of the population that loves to take classes across studios and across workouts. They love a little bit of everything. In the industry, we say they “snack.” Some people will never want to commit to a full-blown membership to your studio. They’ll always be sampling what’s available to them and keep taking classes across the boutique fitness spectrum. And that’s ok. Sometimes in business you have to adapt to your environment as trends evolve and the needs of your clients change. Today, we’ll be talking about these so-called “snackers” who are an important part of your studio’s community. In today’s busy world, it’s difficult to distinguish between a woman’s work bag, going out bag, and gym bag. Gym bags are becoming increasingly more functional and chic because frankly, we’re leaving the house and needing them to take us throughout the whole day. Some gym bags have spots for computers and tablets in addition to wet bags, and water bottle holders. When you own or manage a business, it’s easy to get emotionally involved. I mean, it’s your baby. And we all know that it’s important to be passionate about running and promoting your business. But … making decisions based on emotions can really be a business killer. Financial and marketing decisions should be based on the cold hard facts. Like actual numbers. That you track on a continual basis. Say what?! I have to do math. Oh yeah. Today we’ll talk about the importance of tracking your business’ performance. We’ll share what we track and why. This is not your father’s success. In today’s business world, and especially in the business of fitness, success is not defined as climbing a corporate ladder and getting a gold watch at the end of your career. Today, it’s more about fulfillment of a mission, achieving at work and at home, and continuous learning or personal growth. So, how do you know if it’s a successful day? Can you even track progress with these more conceptual daily goals? If you've been following the podcast, you'll remember in Episode 21: How Will My Team Manage Without Me?, that I recently went on a trip to Australia for almost 3 weeks. We promised a follow-up of what really happened--and there was a lot to talk about, so we recorded the conversation in today's podcast. While I was gone, my managers, Emily and Christina, had to manage the studios, create our August sales goals, keep the team motivated, and ... hire a new employee. They did all this without me! How did they do it? Since we already had a hiring process in place, it wasn't difficult for them to follow it and find success hiring someone. Creating systems for your business is really important and this scenario clearly demonstrates why. If you went out of town on an epic vacation and needed to hire someone while you were one, could your team do it? Do you have a hiring process in place? When you own a business, it can seem really difficult, to take vacation. The only way you can take that much-needed time off, is to hire a great team to run your business for you. That’s our message on this podcast. Hiring a team of trusted, capable employees is a big deal. Not because it’s difficult to find good people, but because it’s the difference between being happy and fulfilled in your business and wanting to give it all up and go back to working in corporate America. But as entrepreneurs, working for yourself and being your own boss, should be a source of pride and joy, not anger and bitterness. Your business should be the gateway to incredible life experiences including, really cool trips. At the time of this recording, I’m getting ready to travel to Australia. Let’s face it. Business has evolved A LOT since career women wore suits with shoulder pads, carried bulky briefcases, and sported white sneakers with nylons rushing to the office. The Internet, smart casual, and side hustles have changed the way we do business. What is smart casual or snappy casual, anyway? Talk about confusing. Glad we just wear leggings to the studio. But I digress … In what we’re calling the New Workplace, there are some fundamental truths that apply to all businesses big and small. 1. Consumers shop where there’s community, rather than cash registers 2. Traditional marketing is DEAD 3. Those who influence and manage teams will find workplace success Today’s conversation will discuss these three things and why businesses that focus on these truths will thrive. I’m really struggling. My life is pretty much weathering one crisis into the next. There is always a problem in my business. Always something that needs to be fixed. Sometimes I let dishes pile up in my sink. Sometimes I vacuum up enough hair in my house to make another dog. I wish I could eat salad for lunch, but I just can’t. I like sandwiches. With bread. I will never live up to my inner critic about teaching Pure Barre classes. And I’m ok with that. Why? Because I’d rather be brave than perfect. I’d rather be doing something rather than nothing because I’m paralyzed with fear. Moving forward is better than standing still—in business and in life. Women today seem to value the appearance of perfection above being real. Making mistakes is taboo. Admitting that you make mistakes and don’t have all the answers is self-destruction in many social circles. Other women will look down on you. You’ll be judged. Well, f*ck that! Here’s a newsflash … nobody’s perfect. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/shes-on-her-toes/support
Everyone in the Pure Barre world has their “first class” story. It usually includes the following: You walked into the studio. Didn’t know anyone. Thought class couldn’t be “that” hard. Was in shell-shock during what the teacher claimed was the “warmup.” Felt like a complete idiot with arms and legs flailing while everyone else seemed to anticipate the next move. Finished class, red-faced, wrecked, and hardly able to hobble out to your car. Meanwhile, everyone else smiled, glistened, and looked fabulous as they effortlessly moved onto the next part of their day. But … you still came back to your second class because deep down you couldn’t let Pure Barre defeat you. You knew you’d be better at it the next class … and the next class … and the class after that. Today, we tell all about when we took our first Pure Barre classes ... and you might be surprised at what we thought. We’ve all heard about gigs and side hustles. But what does the Gig Economy mean for your business. If most of your employees are part-time, or have multiple jobs, how does that change the way you manage them and find success in your business? The Gig Economy goes beyond driving for Uber and Lyft. With opportunities for your employees to sell multi-level marketing products via Facebook, influencer blogging, and a plethora of part-time openings in brick-and-mortar stores, it’s likely that many of your employees won’t just be working for you. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that “gig” workers represent approximately 34% of today’s workforce and by 2020, that number will increase substantially to 43%. In this episode, we’ll discuss the opportunities and challenges that “gig” workers bring to your business and how you can effectively manage this workforce. So, how’s it going? How are you? I’m so busy! I’ve been so busy, it’s just insane. And so starts the beginning of just about every conversation in today’s modern age. And … it’s so f-ing boring, sometimes I can’t even stand it. Why are we sooo busy? Are we actually doing more … or are we overscheduled and overworked with the wrong things, we don’t have any time to get anything important done? I’m going to go out on a limb and say most of this “business” is more about doing the wrong things than prioritizing what’s most important. And frankly, that’s sad. When was the last time you said “No” to someone? Why is saying “No” so hard? The big problem with refusing to say “No” to things you don’t have time for, or don’t want to do, is that they take a huge toll on the remaining time you have for the things you need … and like to do. The lesson here is the more you say “No,” the more you can say “Yes.” Check out the website www.shesonhertoes.com --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/shes-on-her-toes/support
It seems counterintuitive. Wouldn’t you want to workout in the summer? But, alas. No. What seems like a busy time for fitness is actually known in the industry as the dreaded summer fitness slump. You know, that time when it seems like almost all of your clients head out of town to the beach, the mountains, fabulous trips to Europe and the Caribbean, and a few more trips to the beach for good measure. It’s a time for fitness studio owners to hunker down, spend as little money as possible, clean out your back-storage room, and anxiously await your vacationing clients to all come back for a busy Fall—please come back! Millennials, or the generation born between 1981 and 1996, will make up about 75% of the workforce in 2025. That’s just 7 years away. And we’ve all heard some pretty negative criticism about this group—they’re unfocused; entitled; demanding; and addicted to technology. Are these stereotypes? Maybe. Maybe not. It doesn’t really matter because these are the people who will be moving businesses forward. The single thing that separates Millennials from previous generations is technology. So, while my generation was outside playing with sticks, millennials had these crazy things called smart phones that gave them unfettered access to the Internet. It turns out that what you do every day really does matter. The most successful individuals on this planet have daily rituals to keep them at the top of their game. And, overwhelmingly, the most successful and wealthy, read books. Like, actual books. Every single day. Ok, ok. Some of them listen to books AND podcasts. But reading the written word directly correlates to higher education and thus higher income. Studies have shown that reading 7 or more books per year makes you 122% more likely to be a millionaire. Why is that? Maybe it’s because reading expands the mind and encourages creativity. Maybe it’s because so many of us don’t read, that this type of continuous learning gives regular readers a huge advantage in business and in life. What if there was a way to actually spend your advertising budget to bring guaranteed new leads into your business each and every day? Sound too good to be true. It’s not. We talked so long last week, that we split the discussion into two parts ... join us for the second half of our discussion on how to hire the right team ... If you've already read the book, She’s On Her Toes, you'll remember the definition of a fitness business, but let’s just refresh: "A fitness business is a commercial, profitable enterprise that can be run without you so you can be a role model in the health and fitness community you are creating." To get your business to run without you, you'll have to be a true leader and create the vision, mission and culture for your employees to follow. Taking the time to write your business Vision, Mission and Culture statements is the most valuable process you can complete when it comes to building a team because it establishes clear parameters for who you want to hire. If a candidate you interview doesn’t agree with any part of your Vision, Mission and Culture statements, then they aren’t a good fit for your business. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/shes-on-her-toes/support
I take full responsibility for my business successes and failures. I made all the decisions to shape my business. But it wasn’t until I looked at running my business differently that great things really started to happen for me. See, the definition of a business is: A commercial, PROFITABLE, enterprise that works…WITHOUT YOU. This means that you are free to work ON your business not IN it. The business is fully functioning without you. Does that describe your business? Can you stay home or go on vacation and everything will happen without you? Will the doors be unlocked and clients served? Will you see money deposited into your bank account? If the answer is no, then you own a job, not a business. Once I realized how important it is to hire the right team and give them the responsibility of running my business, then things started falling into place. Hiring the right team is the difference between owning a job and owning a business. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/shes-on-her-toes/support

The concept of one’s own success resulting due to the failure of others is very real. In a time when there have never been more opportunities for women, and small business owners, people in general, why do we continue to have a scarcity mindset? Why is living with abundance so hard? In Episode 5, we talk about living with abundance and why that can be challenging in our ultra-competitive world. Living with abundance means that opportunities are unlimited. If someone gets more, that doesn’t necessarily mean someone else gets less. When you live with an abundance mentality, you have a strong personal worth. You feel secure. You are open to all possibilities. You’re creative and fulfilled. Sounds awesome, right? So, why is it easier for us to root for others to fail, rather than champion their success? In fact, they probably already have formed expectations about how they’ll be treated before they even step foot into your business. Or don’t even give you a second look after they do their research! Do We Take Enough Risks? Are We Turning Our Backs on Bravery? Risk … it’s kind of a dirty word. Risk is bad. When we look up the definition of risk, we find “a situation involving exposure to danger.” But is taking a risk really that dangerous? As business owners, we take risks every day. It was a risk to dream of working for ourselves. It was a risk to quit our corporate jobs. It was a risk to open our businesses. Expanding is risky. Hiring employees is risky. Offering a new promotion is risky. In business, life, fitness, just about everything is a risk! In our inaugural episode of She’s On Her Toes podcast, we’re going to talk about risk, whether women actively seek to avoid taking risks, and how that might have a negative impact on reaching our goals in business and in fitness. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/shes-on-her-toes/support
