Bree's Personal Story My roots lie on a corn, soybean, potato, and onion farm in Southeastern North Dakota, where I had the opportunity to manage crop variety and chemistry test plots. Occasionally, I even got behind the wheel of a tractor or combine. Growing up in this environment, I witnessed the remarkable impact of biotechnological, chemical, mechanical, and electrical innovations as they completely transformed not only my family's commercial agriculture operation but also our entire rural community. As an academic scientist, my journey has taken me on kayaking adventures across the lakes of Minnesota, living and working in the captivating landscapes of Iceland, picking cotton under the blazing Texas sun, and collaborating closely with regulatory officials in Kenya. I attended law school part-time and worked in various roles throughout the past four years. First, I served as a policy advisor on Capitol Hill. Then, I managed global business development for an antibody discovery contract research organization. Concurrently, my journey in patent prosecution began at an IP boutique firm and then most recently continued in big law. Outside of work, my rescue dog, Kai, and rescue horse, Rico, keep me active outdoors. I also enjoy engaging in various forms of physical activity, including yoga, [solid core], and Pure Barre. My love for holistic personal and professional development continuously drives me to keep learning and growing. I am also passionate about studying nutrition, and during COVID, I completed my Integrative Nutrition Health Coach Certificate. https://www.linkedin.com/in/breevculek/

Boutique Fitness Confessions

Health Is Hell

Exercise gives many of us a sense of control, stability, and discipline. Boutique fitness, with its fancy methodologies and curated lights, scents, and sounds, capitalizes on another, more elusive (and highly monetizable) feeling: purpose. For up to $50 per class, we're not only sold a vision of our best body, but also our best self. We're asked to set intentions, repeat affirming mantras, and see squatting and sprinting as a chance to ‘conquer the impossible'. The word 'community' is thrown around like cold towels. In a world that's lonely and often disappointing, it's easy to see why endorphins can quickly become addictive and studios marketing power and positivity become clients' second homes. But for employees of these studios, the culture is a LOT darker.  I open up the episode with my own candid confessions about using barre and pilates as an emotional coping mechanism, especially when it comes to men and relationships; choosing body neutrality over body positivity; and my attraction to overpriced boutique fitness as a way to achieve the "clean girl aesthetic"...and therefore the semblance of a more put-together life.  Then (13:35), with the casting help of Deuxmoi, we hear from anonymous former employees of Bar Method, DanceBody, Flywheel, Laughing Lotus, Orange Theory, Pure Barre, Taryn Toomey's The Class, an unnamed Los Angeles Lagree studio, and a Western Pennsylvania SoulCycle dupe. They tell stories about psychologically abusive training camps, CEOs with God complexes, intense fat shaming, raging eating disorders, overt racism, and severe underpayment. They walk us through how instructors get clients hooked on certain workouts, and what makes a marketing campaign effective. They reveal some of the WILD codes of conduct (or lack thereof) found in employee and trainer handbooks. And, most importantly, they encourage us to take a long, hard look at why we're often so willing to compromise our morals, on either side of the check-in desk, in pursuit of the “perfect body.” ~ GOT A SECRET TO GET OFF YOUR CHEST? I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of our community's questions that have come in over the past few weeks…   Joey: Hi, in your experience when clients have issues due to mold how long does it take once they move out of the moldy environment to start feeling better.   Holly: Hey! I've been listening to your podcasts they're amazing. I listen between clients when I'm walking etc. I've been on a mission for so long because my body is inflamed I know I have sibo leaky gut and candida. I have numerous allergies sinus infections etc. in fact I have that much I'm just wondering would you recommend anything in a particular order like detox first ? Just because I think I'd benefit from that all it's hard to chose.   Erica: What causes reoccurring H Pylori infections? I got rid of mine about 3 years ago following your protocol and I appear to be positive again. Thanks in advance!   Kerri: Hi I love your podcast listen almost everyday. I'm on a strict carnivore diet for psoriasis that I've been on for 2 months now. I just quit using betamethasone after using it for many months. I've only cheated on my diet one weekend each month with dairy free sugar free ice cream. Why am I not seeing improvement yet? Is it TSW or maybe the little cheats I did are slowing progress? Thank you soo much for all your do.   Kate: Hi Dr. Cabral! I'm 52 years old female, pretty healthy and fit. I eat low carb diet, take nutritional support daily, workout at least 4-5 times a week, do intermittent fasting 16-8. However, this so the second time I get very sharp pain in my chest exactly in the middle of my chest. It lasts for weeks. The first time I had this I got scared that I might have a heart attack. I went to the doctor, did all the tests but they didn't find anything (fortunately). Seems like I was healthy. Now several years later I have the same thing. I was searching up the internet, and I found the name costochondritis which seems to match all the symptoms I have. Is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening again. I was also wondering if my exercises could've caused that.I do Pure Barre mainly   Anonymous: Hello Dr. Cabral. I was so excited to see that Beautycounter was on your website under resources.
