Take a moment to look up. Stories, interviews, hot takes and sweet tunes that consider a side of art and culture in Vancouver you may not have.
It's week three of my personal Quarantine, and I'm in your podcast feeds by way of my partner's closet in New West with a new episode. Listen in for snippets of a band my dad was in in 1980, new music from White Poppy, and me talking about how much I love Carla from Bon Appetit Test Kitchen.
This week's episode features a montage of voice memos from my friends about life in quarantine, with music by White Poppy. I talk about organizations that could really use your donations right now, please give generously if you are able to! Donate to:Carnegie Community Action Project - http://www.carnegieaction.org/Keep the Cats Fed - @HappyCatVancouver on Instagram or TwitterTrans Pizza - #transpizza or transpizza.orgAnd finally, I play songs from artists who released music during Bandcamp's initiative to pay artists 100% of profits from music sales. Take care everyone, xx
Well my dears, we're stuck. COVID-19 has got the world on lock-down. I asked you, dear listeners and followers, which songs make you feel nice. So, this episode is chock full of niceness to soothe your worried minds. When I recorded this, I had a cold, but have since recovered. Take care out there, call your Grandma, take a walk, and breath deep. We'll get through this! xx - Madeline
Disco F*cks! You've probably heard the phrase "disco sucks!" thrown around when people start talking about disco or macho rock culture from the 70's. Disco is rooted in black and latinx culture and music, and was huge in gay nightclubs, so, the hatred of disco was wrapped up in racism and homophobia. This hour, I wanted to offer a shout out to disco new and old! Cause Disco F*cks! Millennial Line! Millennial Line is a comedy and poetry event that takes place at Red Gate Art's Society on the third Thursday of every month! It is organized by Tin Lorica and Savannah Erasmus, and Savannah called in to talk about their next show on March 19th. Follow them on socials! It's Pisces season, everyone's favourite month of cry time! Stay dry out there, pals.
Local pop icon Non La's new record 'Not In Love' dropped on your aunt's favourite holiday, February 14th! I invited DJ On to the show to share a playlist of inspo.
If you've been following the news in Canada in the last few weeks, there are solidarity actions taking place all across the country in solidarity with the dismantling of Uni'stot'en camps, and arrest of Indigenous Land Protectors on unceded territory. Diversify your news sources. Talk to those on the front lines. Show up for Indigenous Land Defenders. It is also CiTR's annual Fundrive! The reason we're able to talk about these issues freely is our independent media status, which we need your help to maintain. Please support at citr.ca/donate
There! Is! No! Time! It's busy y'all! Here's a playlist that makes me feel better. Hopefully it makes you feel better too.
The Golden Age of Wrestling is the newest project from local pop icon Jeff Cancade, AKA Devours. This hour The Golden Age of Wrestling takes us on a spacey journey through his ambient influences.
This episode is dedicated to the memory of Elissa Barclay. This is an excerpt from a letter written by her sister, Adèle Barclay in the Elissa Barclay Memorial Fund GoFundMe: https://ca.gofundme.com/f/elissa-barclay-memorial-fund"Music saved my life and my sister's life when we were young teens growing up in small town Ontario. I want to make the life-affirming experience of music available to as many youth as possible. Since Girls Rock Camp is a Registered Non-Profit and not a Registered Charity, I (Adèle Barclay) will collect the funds and make the donation in Elissa's name in February 2020. Please join me honouring the memory of my dear sister and helping the young ones make the music they need to make to live." RIP Elissa, Nov. 7, 1980 ~ Nov. 20, 2019
Cartel Madras are Eboshi and Contra, siblings from Chennai in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, raised in Calgary on tour up the West Coast! They performed live in CiTR Studios, and then joined me in studio for an interview.
It's Sagittarius season. It's cuffing season. Everyone is sick. Your exams are done. It's time to mull some wine and eat a lot, make plans to survive a lot of time with your family! What are some things you’re doing to make the yuletide gay as in happy and homosexual? Personally, I’m hanging out with as many of my dear pals as possible, sneaking flasks into queer dance parties, and buying lots of cheese. Stay warm out there pals
Sarah Jickling and Her Good Bad Luck has a new record, "The Family Curse " coming out on November 8th! She joins me on air with a playlist of songs she loves.
The Federal Election is today, so here are 15 reasons to VOTE! REASON 1 - YOU CAN - democracy is a precious right, and not something we should take for granted. Protests in China and Chile are examples of what the alternative looks like. Change is slow, and voting is not going to solve everything, no. BUT, it helps! It’s harm reduction! REASON 2 - Pharmacare - people need meds and a lot of them are very expensive. If you don’t have coverage through work, a lot of people cant afford the prescriptions they need to live. REASON 3 - Indigenous Land Sovereignty REASON 4 - Climate Change REASON 5 - Dental coverageREASON 6 - Electoral ReformREASON 7 - Having a PM who hasn't worn black/brown face, and doesn't prop up white supremacyREASON 8 - Sex worker rightsREASON 9 - Abortion rights and accessREASON 10- Trans rights and access to healthcare REASON 11- Arts fundingREASON 12 - Public Education fundingREASON 13 - Housing access REASON 14 - The opioid crisis REASON 15 - Billionaires not being taxedREASON 16 - Free speech being used to prop up hate speech at public institutions
The youth are leading climate action globally, and right now all eyes are on Greta Thunberg following her address to UN climate action summit. Thunberg is right to centre Indigenous activists in the movement, as they have been raising these issues and mobilizing for years before the world was paying attention. I also talk about Enby Party, a music label, festival, and collective by and for non-binary artists.
Rain, rain, rain. Here's hoping you have a cuddly place to enjoy this playlist. Happy Birthday to Devours!

RIP Marsh P. Johnson, 1945-1992This year marks 50 years since the Stonewall Riots in NYC, widely acknowledged to have kicked off the modern LGBTQIA2S+ rights movement. I was in Brooklyn and NYC at the beginning of June, and was lucky to see some of the art, exhibition, and history honouring 50 years of Pride. Marsha P. Johnson is famous for her participation in the Stonewall riots, and her activism in the LGBTQ community for the entirety of her short life. She is quoted talking about her activism and presence in the LGBTQ+ community as saying "What's the point of complaining? It don't get you nowhere. I may be crazy but that don't make me wrong. Nobody promised you tomorrow." This quote is on my mind heading into Pride in Vancouver. We have so much to be grateful to our queer elders for, and so much left to fight for. Nobody Promised You Tomorrow
Starting out with a shout out to my own Mom, but keeping in mind that biological Mom's are not always the Mom's we need. So sending love to all of the "mom's" who are siblings, friends, aunties, grandmas, Trans or Non-binary parents and caregivers, and everyone in between.
Enough said. TERFs are trash, Trans futurism baby!
In Our Feelings. Even if they're imaginary? A playlist for when things are going great but you want to wallow in the human condition just because.
This week there are lots of guitars, jungle beats and big bass songs. Special shout out to Grandma's the world over.
A moody mix to balance the effects of more daylight and cute park hangs. Just kidding, I want happiness for all, but it's still Pisces season so we can bask in feelings a little longer.
Once a year we ask our listeners to open their wallets and support the glory of community radio with their donations to CiTR 101.9FM & Discorder Mag. Thank you to everyone who donated to Shoes On A Wire, and thanks especially to Man Up! Vancouver, Music Waste, and Pride at Red Gate for donating tickets to Shoes On A Wire for donors.
Last night Bohemian Rhapsody won approximately 1 million awards at the Oscars, (and we all love Freddie Mercury), but the movie has been widely criticized for its portrayal of his sexuality, and watching straight actors receive praise for playing queer characters is tired. With that in mind, this week's playlist is 100% LGTQIA2S+ artists.
It's Pisces Season, we’re in the last week of Black History Month, so today I am joined by DJ Softie Shan, Shanique Kelly to talk about her Black History Month events calendar. She’s heavily involved in the Queer party scene in Vancouver, DJ’s at Fox Cabaret, Boxcar, The Clubhouse, Warehouse, and more, started a new Queer Rap R&B dance party called Level Up. She also runs Intersessions Vancouver, and mentors other women + femmes to DJ. Follow her @softieshan

"I am just a stone for you, whatever that means" - Pale RedMoving to a new time slot next week! Shoes will air Mondays at 4pm.
Hi cuties I missed you! It's 2019, the L Word is coming back, Will & Grace is coming back, the drag landscape in Vancouver is changing, and we're all so sleepy. This is playlist perfect for your (maybe slightly reluctant) Aquarius season snuggles.
Happy Birthday to the world's favourite Virgo Sun, our Lord and Saviour, Queen Beyonce. The last episode of Season 2! See y'all some sweet day soon
End of summer playlist, imagine you're not in a sticky city.
Dedicated to your smokey hearts. RIP Aretha Franklin
Happy Pride! This hour will have you glistening like the flaming joy of 1000 glitter bombed drag things
Calling in from Louisville Kentucky, queer scream pop duo GRLwood join me for an interview! We talked about their origins stories, queerness in the armpit of America, life under Trump, what makes punk good, and some wild stories about their life in Louisville.
Toronto based post punk art rock trio Nikki Fierce are on tour with Hooded Fang in support of their new EP, Man Made Woman. They called in from the road in Manitoba to chat.
It's a new moon in Cancer and the weight of patriarchy is crushing, so let's lean into some stereotypes and SCREAM about it. This episode is dedicated to Trans Women, especially those who were impacted by the TERF protests at the London Pride Parade.
Things are heating up in Vancouver, so here's a playlist to keep you smiling while you sweat. I was joined in studio by Marta from CJSW, a dear pal and wonder Queen of radio in Calgary. She shared some surf pop jams, and we giggled a bunch. Thanks for listening
Sled Island is a magical time in an unexpected place - Calgary, Alberta. If you've never had the chance to experience this fest, mark your calendars for next June. This episode is a little love letter to Sled.
Bands to watch at Sled Island Music Festival!
This week it's all about new music and MUSIC WASTE! Started in 1994 in response to a more corporate Vancouver festival called “Music West”, Music Waste is entirely DIY, volunteer run, and features over 70 local bands. In the last few years the way the festival is organized has changed to make sure they’re including a broader range of genres and voices, though the majority is still punk, indie, rock, pop, and electronic. The festival takes place at venues across Vancouver from June 7-10th, with showcases of DIY Art, Poetry, and for the first time EVER, DRAG Waste! It’s hands down my favourite event in the city, check it out.
May 17th is International Day Against Transphobia, Biphobia and Homophobia, so this episode is extra queer and features music ONLY by LGBTQ+ folks. Stay safe out there, flamers
This episode is dedicated to the flowers TAKING OVER Vancouver, specifically Blue Bells (cockleshells) and Lilac bushes. They make me happy every day and I hope they make you happy too.
No Justin Timberlake related jokes were made in this episode, just some great music, and it happens to be the month of May.
Love songs, #riverdale spoilers (omg wut), punk rock, & some 90's inspired nostalgia.
Musical company for the flamers of the world. Tune in for irrationality, validation, and some pop hooks to leave you drooling.
