Episode 248 Happy March 22! Your angels are reminding you to let go of the fears and remember who the heck you are! MARCH 22 ENERGY FORECAST: 40. Inspiration: It’s your purpose to shine your light You’re a lightworker! It’s your soul’s purpose to shine your light so that others can shine theirs too. Please don’t dim your light because you’re afraid of what someone else will think or say. Those people aren’t your soulmate clients! As a lightworker, you can be like a flashlight in a dusty corner; many people don’t want to see what’s there, so they’ll try to dim your light or put it out...they’re just not ready to see. Send them a loving blessing and move on. Your actions will inspire others! 30. Leap of Faith: Feed your fear or your faith Do you feel like you don’t have the confidence for something right now? Guess what? That’s not a good enough excuse to stop. There are people who need you and maybe you don’t have the “perfect plan” but even if you did, something would shift and change. You’re adaptable and smart. You CAN do this! You’ve figured out harder things and you’re ready for a big shift. Are you gonna just stand there with your toes on the edge too worried to move, or are you going to take a running leap trusting that you’ll soar with your angels all around you? The choice is yours. Feed your fear or feed your faith. It’s up to you! 25. Wealth: You’re surrounded by an abundance You picked this card because you’re surrounded by abundance! If you can’t see it yet, close your eyes and feel it. Abundance and wealth are not outside you, they’re within and all around you. Money is energy and so are you. You deserve to receive higher levels of prosperity. Make a clear goal of exactly how much money you wish to align with and by when. Place your order to the universe. Now, let it in. Mantra: “I’m ready to let higher levels of wealth in now!”

On today’s podcast: Rivian to install more than 10,000 EV chargers by end of 2023 UK further cuts down EV subsidies Amazon's New Electric Vans Built by EV Startup Rivian Are Being Deployed in San Francisco Audi's 2023 Q6 E-Tron EV will use technology co-developed with Porsche Show #1026 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 19th March. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. RIVIAN TO INSTALL MORE THAN 10,000 EV CHARGERS BY END OF 2023 "Rivian, the EV startup backed by Amazon, Cox Automotive and T. Rowe Price, plans to install more than 10,000 chargers by the end of 2023. The network will have a dual purpose: quickly power its electric vehicle models with fast chargers installed along highways and provide Level 2 chargers at further afield locations next to parks, trailheads and other adventurous destinations." says TechCrunch: "The company said Thursday that its so-called Rivian Adventure Network will include more than 3,500 DC fast chargers at over 600 sites, which will only be accessible to owners of its electric vehicles." "While Adventure Network of chargers will be solely for Rivian owners, the company also plans a second network of stations dubbed Waypoints, which will be available to other EV drivers. These will number over 10,000 and will be installed through 2023. The first batch will go to Colorado's 42 state parks, each getting two Waypoints each. " according to Autoweek: "The Waypoints will feature only the J1772 plugs and offer a charging speed of 11.5 kW, so these won't be as quick as the DC fast chargers. Rivian's two-tier plan of charging networks represent a serious step for the company, just months ahead of the market launch of its first two vehicles, and unlike Tesla's network, only a part of it will be exclusive to Rivian owners." "Rivian owners will need to do is pull up and plug in. No membership cards or anything like that. The first stations will support 200 kilowatts of juice to start, but Rivian plans to amp things up with 300 kW and beyond after 2023. " reports CNET: "R1T pickup and R1S SUV owners will fill their battery packs with 140 miles of range in just 20 minutes, the company promised. Like the Adventure Network, Rivian owners will be able to charge their cars automatically by simply pulling up and plugging in. The public will need to jump through a couple of hoops, comparatively, though the company didn't go into detail about the process." Let's say they started installing on April 1st - no joke. That's 33 months. To install 3,500 DC chargers at 600 sites. That's 18 sites a month, from today. Working days? That's a site A DAY. Is it going to happen? You decide. https://techcrunch.com/2021/03/18/rivian-to-install-more-than-10000-ev-chargers-by-end-of-2023/ https://www.autoweek.com/news/green-cars/a35885831/rivian-adventure-network/ https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/rivian-ev-charging-network-tesla-superchargers/ UK FURTHER CUTS DOWN EV SUBSIDIES "The Plug-in Car Grant for pure electric cars has been reduced from £3,000 to £2,500, with the list price cap also reduced from £50,000 to £35,000. The changes are effective immediately from today (18 March 2021)." reports Ricahrd Aucock at Motoring Research: "These measures have been taken to ensure the funding lasts longer, says the government. The £50,000 price cap has been lowered to £35,000 because higher-priced vehicles are ‘typically bought by drivers who can afford to switch without a subsidy from taxpayers’. Cars now excluded include the Tesla Model 3, as driven by transport secretary Grant Shapps. Several times last year, the Model 3 was Britain’s best-selling car in the monthly registration rankings." SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes said: "“New battery electric technology is more expensive than conventional engines and incentives are essential in making these vehicles affordable to the customer. Cutting the grant and eligibility moves the UK even further behind other markets, which are increasing their support, making it yet more difficult for the UK to get sufficient supply. This sends the wrong message to the consumer, especially private customers, and to an industry challenged to meet the government’s ambition to be a world leader in the transition to zero emission mobility.”" Ford of Britain Chairman Graham Hoare: “disappointing and is not conducive to supporting the zero emissions future we all desire.” The British government states that the number of available electric car models with a price below 35,000 pounds has increased by almost 50 per cent since 2019. So, the MGZS EV. Just one of the Hyundai Kona models, the bottom spec small battery version. No Tesla. Only the bottom spec VW ID.3 Pro with 263 mile range. Vans are harder hit. @SteveFowler, Editor in Chief of AutoExpress: "Government kicks car industry and car buyers squarely in the guts. Slashes plug-in grant and lowers limit. LUDICROUS. So angry. Thought it was April 1. Bad, bad move." I tweeted: "Anyone fancy buying a @Tesla in the next 12 days? They'll cover the £2500 car grant which no longer applies as they're all over £35k RRP" Heres an example of a family car caught out by the overnight change. The vans were built by Amazon-backed electric vehicle startup Rivian. The deployment is San Francisco is the second West Coast city that Amazon is testing its new delivery vehicles in, following the first deployments in Los Angeles in early February. " says FutureCar: "The current fleet of vehicles was built at Rivian's studio in Plymouth, Michigan, and each can drive up to 150 miles on a single charge." https://www.futurecar.com/4493/Amazons-New-Electric-Vans-Built-by-EV-Startup-Rivian-Are-Being-Deployed-in-San-Francisco AUDI'S 2023 Q6 E-TRON EV WILL USE TECHNOLOGY CO-DEVELOPED WITH PORSCHE "Audi announced it will fill the gap between the upcoming Q4 E-Tron and the E-Tron already in showrooms with a model called Q6 E-Tron. Due out in 2022, the crossover will share its underpinnings with the next Porsche Macan." according to Autoblog "Audi will position the Q6 E-Tron as electric alternative to the Q5. Don't let the common bones (and some of the inaccurate reports floating around the web) fool you: the Q6 E-Tron will not be merely a re-badged Macan. It will ride on the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture that Audi and Porsche co-developed to underpin a range of relatively big luxury EVs. Like the Taycan and the Taycan Cross Turismo, both crossovers will feature 800-volt technology that promises to significantly reduce charging times." You Can’t Do It On Your Own Today’s readings are Deuteronomy 22 – 24 and Galatians 4. Readings are from the New Living Translation. Set free! Most of us are not free. Most of us are sentimental legalists. We flatter ourselves and think we are better at this righteousness than we really are. That’s why Paul says, ”Tell me, you who want to live under the law, do you know what the law actually says?” (Gal 4:21). The answer is No. The demands of the law are impossible! It’s downright hard to read sometimes. Breaking the law warrants death. And if you want to get sobered up to the demands of the law and the judgement due us, because of it, you don’t have to go much further than our reading in Deuteronomy today. Let’s ditch this sentimental self-righteous fantasy that we are somehow able to pull this off. We’re not! Holiness is so far out of reach of my flesh that I’d sooner turn into a unicorn than a saint, if it were up to my effort to be holy. But thanks be to God. The right standing, that I couldn’t achieve, has been achieved and purchased for me by the one and only Man – Christ Jesus himself, who could pull it off. He did achieve this spotless life. His sacrifice of death for people like you and me, has not only set us free from the penalty of sin , but he has given us His spirit to occupy our body and our life. He has made us his adopted children. This whole glorious transaction creates a new desire, and a new cry from the heart that says, “Abba Father” - not, “I can do it.” So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father.” (Rom 8:15) There is new Life and real Freedom. Don’t be fooled into sentimental, legalistic, powerless living. Instead there is forgiveness, Sonship and power through the Holy Spirit living and abiding in you- in your body- and in all those who believe. His Spirit and His life live in you! Allow your eyes to be drawn to the glorious grace that has been given to you in Christ. There is only one glorious Man who lived the righteous life we long for. And there’s only One who can live the Christian life now. It’s not you, it’s Christ living in and through you. May you find your rest, hope, and strength, in no other place but in Him. The Christian life is impossible apart from Christ, but in Christ, all things are possible. Live free and alive in Him today.

Today, we will talk about ways to make time when you have no time. He is very busy, overwhelmingly busy. He texted back - I will be driving in ten minutes. Ten minutes later, my phone rang. We chatted for fifteen minutes, then signed off. That is probably the last time I will hear from that friend on a phone call for a month. He is that overcommitted. No more calls for a month at least. And yet he has time to spend with his family, to be alone, to get exercise and to work on hobbies. He has time to hear podcasts done by friends. He is probably listening to this one thinking, she is talking about me. Yes. I am. Meanwhile, I have another friend. Her job is very demanding. She is frustrated because she is too tired when she gets up to do a few things for herself before she leaves and so mentally taxed when she gets home that all she has energy for is to eat some takeout, pour a glass of wine, pop on a video, and sit there until she falls asleep. Weekends are a rush of laundry and errands that never seem to get caught up. She managed to go see her friends and do fun things but feels a little guilty while she does because her garden is being ignored. She is that overcommitted. She is exhausted. She is grumpy all the time. She hates her job and can’t wait to move on in a few years. The funny thing about both these people is that they will hear this, they will probably know who they are, and that is a good thing. My first example in fact has more hours required of him professionally than the second example, and yet he has time to have some fun. He has time to nurture important relationships. He says no to so many things, including to things I as a close friend request of him, And he rarely complains about anything. He just does stuff. My other friend spends lots of time worried about her failings, her lack of control and her backpedalling - which is leading her more deeply into the cycle of never having any time for anything. I heard from both of these friends recently and it really got me to thinking about how we make time for things. It was a timely thing to run into because here I am, also with a very aggressive set of commitments (You’d be surprised how long it takes to produce a podcast of this nature) and a desire to build my next five years into increasing success with time to do things I love to do. Will I end up like my male friend, or my female one? I know which boat I want to be in and it seems to boil down to making time, not having it. Now I have to say that I am not looking to end up like my former friend -- he spends way too many hours working and not enough hours sleeping. But there are things I can learn from him, and from the second example about setting myself up for success -- and I hope it will set you up for success too. The important thing here is that when you work on making time for things that are important to you, is that you do it to have the kind of life you want, rather than to live up to someone else’s expectations of your life. And the keyword here is expectations. We talked about boundaries last week. Setting clear boundaries with others results in clear expectations. Clear expectations reduce frustration -- at least for you. But to make time, you also need to set boundaries with yourself and make sure your expectations on yourself are clear. So if you hear yourself telling people NO to invitations because you “don;t have time” or “can’t” - take a deeper look at what is going on. DO you really not have time, or do you prefer to do something else? Is it can’t or won’t. Even if the answer is that you are needed at work and don;t have time to go kayaking, the answer is better framed to yourself as “I refer to earn money than to go kayaking Wednesday at 10am” because by talking to yourself in this way, you are being honest about the tradeoff. I mean sure, kayaking Wednesday at 10am sounds fun, doesn’t it? But if you skip work you are giving up $100 or $1000 in income to do it, when you could just shift it to Saturday at 10am and both earn some money and have some fun. This is all about perspective and as you build the habit of taking responsibility for your tradeoffs, you will find that sometimes you choose not to earn the paycheck and rather to go to that wedding, or dig in the garden. Because when you own your tradeoffs, it is easier to see the value of what you are trading off. So making time when you have no time starts with getting your perspective right, then setting better boundaries with yourself and everyone else. If a friend is a real friend, they can take a no. You can take a no too. And when you know why you are saying no to one thing and yes to another and it is absolutely clear to you which is the priority, it is easier to let go of the guilt, which in turn no longer slows you down. You will find that you used to say yes to lots of things that take time and that you both do not like doing, and that do not bring value into your life. Perspective in how you frame your choices and time challenges Set clear boundaries with others and yourself Evaluate interruption -- and eliminate it Simplify house, finances, and everything else Automate and Outsource Just Do it - no excuses I know you are sitting here listening to this thinkin, but Nicole I really don;t have any time, I am too tired, or the demands of my family/job/homestead are too much. I really cant make any more time. Oh yeah? Really. Then try this: Write down three things you want to have time for. It can be a walk. It can be organizing a cabinet in your kitchen. It can be writing something. Changing your oil. I don’t care what it is. Write it down. Tomorrow, set your alarm for 2 hours earlier than you usually get up. If you usually get up at 4, set it for 2. If you get up at 6, set it for 4. When it goes off do this: Get out of bed - have your coffee or whatever you usually have. 15 minutes. Do the thing you wrote down - 60 minutes Give yourself a reward -- maybe another cup of coffee, maybe 15 minutes of reading, maybe 15 minutes of surfing the web. Start getting ready for your day as you usually would. Try this one time. Then do your day as normal and right after dinner, grab a piece of paper and reflect for 5 minutes on how your day went. I think you will be surprised. Making time takes tradeoffs -- in this approach you have traded 2 hours of sleep to complete one thing that you wanted to do and did not have time for. Turns out you did have time -- and sure, maybe you do not want to get up 2 hours early every day, but the method works even if for you the tradeoff ends up being becoming more efficient with your email answering time so that you get 45 minutes a day on the rowing machine, or eliminating interruptions while you pay bills each month which opens up half an hour to spend with your kids playing badminton. The thing that you have to start with his this: You CAN make time and the buck stops with you to do it and today is a great day to start making this change. Make it a great week! GUYS! Thursday, February 25, 2021, 12 noon WPKN 89.5 FM www.wpkn.org Host: Duo Dickinson Everyone lives somewhere. We all talk about where we live, but more, we think about it. A lot. Especially when we have been under House Arrest lo this entire year. There are two worlds that we go to to consider our options in creating our own home. One is everywhere, especially now in a Connecticut Covid Bounce that has seen prices jump 20%, the Real Estate world. It is a world of marketing, dumbing down everything to a “Style” or “the latest trend”. Whether HOUZZ or Home Depot, our home love is seen a Profit Center Opportunity, and the language of “Buy Now And Save” is the same as that for selling anything, hype over insight, let alone listening to our fondest dreams. The second world of those you can talk to about your biggest asset and risk, where you live, are the designers, builders, architects who make the homes you are thinking about everyday. But a different hype happens. Rather than feign sentimental intimacy of Your “special” needs, architects and designers pose as oracles of cool, hiding their preconceptions in language that you do not understand, but, they hope, will confer wisdom, insight and value. Rooms are “Zones”. Windows and doors are “Openings” or worse,”Fenestration”. Trim becomes “Datum”. Walls become “Planes” and doorways become “Voids”. Seeing outside becomes “Transparency” and spending less on heat is “Sustainable”. Why can’t architect’s just talk the walk of homemaking? Today on HOME PAGE we ask that question of three who have dealt with how we communicate in design in ways that. Give them exceptional insights. Peter Chapman has worked at The Taunton Press for over 30 years and is currently executive editor for Taunton Books. Peter has had a hand in most of the home design books that Taunton has published since 1998, including two from our host, Duo (Staying Put and The House You Build), as well as Sarah Susanka’s best-selling Not So Big House series. In earlier lives, Peter worked as a house painter (church steeples a specialty), educational test compiler, and apple picker.” Gina Calabro is the Executive Director/CEO of the Connecticut Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA Connecticut). AIA Connecticut serves as a resource to architects and the public. Its membership of over 1,500 is comprised of architects, professionals working towards licensure, architectural students, and business professionals in affiliated fields. Prior to joining AIA Connecticut, she has worked with or lead trade associations as the CEO for the Home Builders and Remodelers Association (HBRA) of Fairfield County, and as the Division Director of Membership and Marketing for the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities. Kurt Andersen is a writer. His latest book Evil Geniuses: The Unmaking of America (2020) about how U.S. society was re-engineered during the last quarter of the 20th century to serve big business and the well-to-do at the expense of everyone else. It was a New York Times bestseller, like its companion volume Fantasyland: How America Went Haywire (2017), Andersen’s prize-winning history of America’s weakness for exciting untruths. In addition, he’s the author of four critically acclaimed, bestselling novels –– You Can’t Spell America Without Me (2017), True Believers (2012), Heyday (2007) and Turn of the Century (1999). Andersen also writes for television and the stage, appears regularly on MSNBC and contributes to the New York Times. He co-created and hosted the Peabody Award-winning weekly public radio program Studio 360, co-founded Spy magazine, and was a columnist and design critic for The New Yorker, New York and Time, as well as editor-in-chief of New York. Born and raised in Omaha, he graduated from Harvard College and lives with his wife Anne Kreamer in Brooklyn

American politics have long served as inspiration for movies, plays, and especially television -- from fictional shows like “The West Wing” to late-night comedy shows. For a lot of people, those shows have become a major source of information when it comes to our government, political system, and the state of the world. In this episode, we hear from three people who have been front and center in bringing politics into our living rooms and beyond. Hillary talks with Samantha Bee, host of the comedy show Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, which tackles under-reported but hugely important stories in the news with biting humor. Then, Hillary is joined by Kerry Washington, star of the Emmy-award winning show Scandal, to talk about how no one—not even Olivia Pope—holds as much power as ordinary citizens do when it comes to bringing about political change. Lastly, Hillary talks to Alec Baldwin, who has finally been released from his stint playing Donald Trump on Saturday Night Live. Samantha Bee is a comedian and the host of Full Frontal with Samantha Bee on TBS. She was previously the longest-serving correspondent on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. She also hosts the podcast Full Release with Samantha Bee. Kerry Washington is an actress, producer, and director known for her role as Washington fixer Olivia Pope in ABC’s Scandal, and as Anita Hill in the HBO political thriller Confirmation, both of which have garnered her numerous awards. She recently served as an executive producer on The Fight, a documentary film revolving around the legal battles of ACLU lawyers during the Trump administration. Washington is also a dedicated advocate on behalf of racial justice, voting rights, and more. Alec Baldwin is an actor and writer who starred as Jack Donaghy in NBC’s 30 Rock and frequently portrayed Donald Trump on Saturday Night Live. He has written three books: A Promise to Ourselves; his memoir, Nevertheless; and, with Kurt Andersen, the Donald Trump parody You Can’t Spell America Without Me. Alec is also the host of the iHeart Radio podcast Here’s the Thing. Read a full transcript here.
If you’re in a creative field, you’ve probably heard the “starving artist” warning before. And honestly? You’ve probably wondered at some point how you’re going to make money too. Setting your own prices for writing services is confusing. There isn’t a set “going rate” for writing projects, and all writers don’t even use the same approach to pricing. They might charge by the word, or by the hour, or by the project. But we’re here to tell you your work DOES have value. You CAN be a writer and make money, but you have to set yourself up to succeed. And we can teach you how to do it.

Rock Talk With Mitch Lafon presents the legendary - Suzi Quatro We discuss her new album The devil In Me and so much more. Press Release - SUZI QUATRO The Devil In Me 26 March 2021 Tracklisting: 01. Desperado 3:37 Info / Bio (English): It’s got to be a very special release that has Suzi Quatro announce proudly: “The Devil In Me is the best album in my career to date!” After all, the American rock vocalist would hardly utter such superlatives lightly. Suzi’s enthusiasm for her latest offering has many reasons, twelve of them to be precise. Because The Devil In Me consists of exactly a dozen songs, each of them – from the opening track and title song to the final ‘Motor City Riders’ – a real highlight. The reasons for Suzi’s remarkable creative explosion: on the one hand the lockdown, which kept her from her usual touring life in spring 2020, and on the other another collaboration with her son Richard Tuckey, which had already worked out extremely well on her predecessor album No Control. Suzi: “Starting spring 2020, almost one hundred of my shows were cancelled and Richard would also have been on tour with his band had not all concerts been cancelled or postponed. So I said to him: ‘We should make the most of our free time, write new material and allow ourselves to be inspired by the things that are currently going on in the world.’ I already knew that Richard and I make a brilliant team, after all No Control had been a major success and a very special recording for us. Although I would never have thought that we’d be able to surpass it. But everybody who’s heard The Devil In Me and all the people who had worked on the previous album have told us: ‘This album is even stronger!’” Suzi Quatro, now in her 57th year of writing and performing, certainly knows what she’s talking about. Since the beginning of her career as a 14-year-old singer and bassist she has achieved almost everything a musician could possibly hope to achieve. Her charismatic voice, her powerful bass style and global hits such as ‘Can The Can’, ‘48 Crash’, ‘Devil Gate Drive’, ‘If You Can`t Give Me Love’, ‘She`s In Love With You’ and ‘Stumblin In’ made her a rock music icon in the 1970s. To this day, her motto is: “I won’t retire before I turn around, shake my ass and there’s silence.” That this moment is still a long way in the distant future is partly due to The Devil In Me. “I have to confess that I could hardly wait to work on new material again with Richard after the release of No Control,” Suzi explains. “Every album has its own creative history and I know that it’s impossible to plan success. But Richard and I were certain of one thing: We knew we’d be a good team again.” And every single note on The Devil In Me proves just how good this team is. The album presents Suzi’s full range of musical diversity plus a number of surprises. From rock tracks such as ‘The Devil In Me’, ‘Get Outta Jail’, ‘Motorcity Riders’ and ‘Hey Queenie’ (“these four songs are typical of me and continue the tradition of my 1973 debut album”) to fairly unusual numbers such as the pub atmosphere-inspired ‘Isolation Blues’ with its intimate mood or ‘In The Dark’ which is accompanied by elegant piano and provocative saxophone sounds, Suzi presents herself from a whole range of different aspects. “Richard wanted this album to have a through line, so that you could put any track on, and it just fit… he also said he wanted this album to be as important and ground breaking as my first one. So that is how we approached this project, and that is what we accomplished.” ‘My Heart And Soul’ shows just how creative Suzi and Richard could be – it’s without a doubt one of the most beautiful Christmas songs of recent years. Says Suzi: “I have a little studio at my house. Richard was in the studio working on ideas, I was sitting on the patio, relaxing, and heard this absolutely beautiful track coming out of the open studio door. It was a bass line, with a sparse guitar chord, and drums. It was immediate for me. I ran into the studio, mask on of course, it was like a magnet. I asked him: ‘What is this?’ I told him to set up a microphone, I said: ‘Quick, quick, quick!’ And without thinking, without writing anything down, I sang the first for lines of the song exactly as they ended up. That`s when you know you have a great song ... and we do!” And so the lead single ‘My Heart And Soul’ (scheduled for release on 4 December 2020) hails an album that – you can’t help but agree with Suzi – probably really has turned into the best of her career so far. On February 22, 2011, a magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck near Christchurch, New Zealand, killing 185 people. Writing in Slate last month, James Dann said that the quake’s impact on the built environment of Christchurch, a city built on drained swampland, was unprecedented. “More than 1,200 buildings inside the central four avenues were destroyed by the quake or by demolition crews in the years after.” He continued: In the suburbs, a process called liquefaction was just as devastating. As the ground shook, water and sand squeezed up through the soil to the surface, leaving the soil to subside into the space the water had vacated. Houses slumped, and roads folded inward like the icing on a failing chocolate cake. In the hardest-hit eastern suburbs, the government eventually bought out and demolished about 6,500 houses, upending countless families. In his article—“The Last City of the 20th Century”—Dann describes not only the catastrophe of the earthquake itself but also the catastrophic missteps of local and national leaders in rebuilding Christchurch. In the months after the earthquake, there was a huge amount of public input—10,000 people with 100,000 ideas, literally—on how the city should move forward. Yet the national government rejected the community-generated, bottom-up proposal; it went instead with a top-down plan (created behind closed doors) called “the Blueprint.” The results will be sadly familiar to North American readers: Expensive and risky megaprojects, restrictive zoning, clustering activities into “precincts” (there’s even a Justice and Emergency Services Precinct), limiting the number of developers who can be involved, a focus less on current residents and more on luring tourists and out-of-town businesses—all couched in familiar buzzwords like “innovation” and “livability.” Dann concludes that the Blueprint plan “fundamentally misunderstood the organic, spontaneous nature of cities. Places evolve because of the people who live and work in them.” Dann’s article and the Christchurch rebuild are the topics of this week’s episode of Upzoned, with host Abby Kinney, an urban planner in Kansas City, and regular co-host Chuck Maroh, the founder and president of Strong Towns. Abby and Chuck talk about how Christchurch has become an object lesson in how not to rebuild after disaster, why great places aren’t manifestations of big projects, and about the Robert Moses theory-of-change that leads to top-down plans like the Blueprint in Christchurch...and to similar plans across North America. Chuck also reflects on meeting people from New Zealand at CNU and other gatherings in the years immediately after the earthquake...and how he watched those New Zealanders grow increasingly frustrated at the government’s handling of the rebuild. Then, in what must be one of the most unusual Downzones ever, Chuck recommends a book by a Harvard scientist about the search for extraterrestrial life. And Abby talks about a book she’s reading with the subtitle “Charles Manson, the CIA, and the Secret History of the Sixties.” We won’t blame you if the Downzone makes you want to go rewatch The X-Files. The truth is out there. And the award for longest episode title in Slashers Podcast history goes to... Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead (2006) & Interview with Price James! As the title suggests, this episode is a hearty slaw of content, so let's get right down to it! This kicks off Tro-March! That's right, an entire month of Slashers dedicated to Troma. But wait, I can hear the disappointment in your collective sighs through the ether of space and time. If five episodes and a Patreon bonus are not enough Troma content for you, rest assured, we've called in the cavalry; our friends from the podcast, Damn, That's Scary!, are joining us in the fun. We are swapping short bits for each of our episodes all month long, so if you liked their take on Poultrygeist in this episode, please give them a listen. Similarly, if you found us through their show, please let us know at @slasherspod on virtually every platform ever. Poultrygeist was written by Daniel Bova, Gabriel Friedman, and Lloyd Kaufman. Many of you know that Uncle Lloyd has his finger in virtually every Troma project, as if he was the perpetual zombie finger for each film's butthole, which, yes-- occurs within the first five minutes of the film. We talk the Troma film making process, their style, and their cinematic universe which includes The Toxic Avenger, Class of Nuke 'Em High, and several others we will be featuring throughout the month. Of course we also discuss dem Southpark boys who show up in the credits, Matt Stone and Trey Parker, along with the late Lemmy Kilmister of Motörhead. Some of you may know, but Doug actually has a feature film streaming on Troma Now, along with an episode of Mulligan's Monsters. Please consider at the very least doing a trial subscription to follow along all month and support Doug (free, shameless plug). Next, we move on to our interview with Price James. Recently, he directed the documentary: You Can't Kill David Arquette. That film is streaming on Hulu and it is incredible. We talk about towing the line between kayfabe, reality, and being a redemptive cinematic story. The reason we absolutely had to have Price on was his Action Man: Battlefield Casualties short, available here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8KtyMcb86go&ab_channel=VFPUK In the storied tradition of the raconteurs and troubadours before him, Price does an amazing job of highlighting truly terrifying issues, through a lens of comedy. We highly recommend checking out the short, which features Matt Berry of Toast of London and What We Do in the Shadows fame. I AM Beautiful Wild Free: A Guided Affirmation and Meditation Podcast
Season 2, Ep. 9: There’s a lot of beauty in a peaceful and confident spirit. As children of God, this is our right and privilege! God wants to give you His highest and best life. He really doesn’t need you staying up all night worrying about it or allowing it to dominate your thoughts during the day to make it happen.Running through questions, again and again, starts out as simply being inquisitive, and then it grows into worry, which opens the door to the spirit of fear. Once you decide to allow the spirit of fear in your life, it pushes you further from the perfect will of God.When God leads you, you may FEEL fear, but you don’t have to RESIDE in fear. Even though you initially feel fear, the word of God says that you can turn your concerns over to Him. He will give you peace that surpasses all understanding. (Phil. 4:7) You CAN rest your heart in quiet confidence today.God knows what He’s doing. He WILL give you instructions at the right time, and asks for your obedience and trust in the meantime. This is a practice, meaning you may not get it perfect the first time – give your best to God, and He will come along side you and assist you.If you’re tempted to take it into your own hands, continually give that to God today as well. God is ALWAYS working things together for the good of those who are called according to His purpose! (Rom. 8:28)Just because you don’t see what God is doing doesn’t mean that He’s not moving. Rest your heart in quiet confidence that God’s got you.Foundational Scripture for today: “Finally, brothers and sisters, keep you thoughts on whatever is right or deserves praise: things that are true, honorable, fair, pure, acceptable, or commendable.” Philippians 4:8Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/bwfwoman)
