This week's episode serves as a semi-Sled Island spotlight, with music from a slew of artists who'll be in Calgary this week, including Michael Peter Olsen, Jeff Parker, Lael Neale, Tess Roby, WITCH, Malcolm Mooney, Juana Molina, Irreversible Entanglements, and more. It's only a semi-spotlight, though, because there's also your usual AM mix of new and classic tunes for a new (and potentially classic) week. Jon Cohen on The DJ Sessions presents the Virtual Sessions 1/14/21 About Jon Cohen - Jon Cohen is a Montreal a musician whose electrifying story songs transport listeners into the dreamlike dance floors of their minds. His soulful tunes are rooted in 90s fuzz-washed art rock, but quickly reach toward the sunshine of hip-shaking electro grooves. Lorem Ipsum is Cohen's seventh studio release. Recorded almost entirely using an iPhone, the eight tracks take listeners on an inner journey while simultaneously making you want to dance. The album is a melting pot of early 2000 fuzz electronica, from Bonobo to OK GO, Chemical Brothers to Tame Impala. Cohen collaborated with Montreal luminaries Sabrina Halde of Groenland, Cellist Justin Wright & Lou Laurence of DJ Champion to name a few. The new album was mixed by audio Guru Steven Chouinard (Le Couleur,) and mastered by Richard Addison (Daniel Bélanger, We are Wolves) This album is truly a community. Jon Cohen has been described as “...like no one else in the Canadian music scene” (Exclaim!). Cohen has played with many great bands including The Dears, Final Flash, JF Robitaille and more. Under his own moniker, Cohen has toured Canada, USA, UK and Europe, as a solo artist and with band, supporting many noteworthy acts like Rich Aucoin, Dropkick Murphies, Justin Ruthledge, Elephant Stone, Moulettes, Sean Lennon, and playing festivals likeCMW, Pop Montreal, Iceland Airwaves and Sled Island among others. Jon also co-organizes the One Wo/Man Band Festival. The world is a very different place from when this interview took place. Today we are releasing a conversation Jeff had back in June 2019 with Saskatoon duo, The FAPS. The interview was conducted during Sled Island of that year and was held all this time to be a promo tool for the 2020 edition of the festival. Sadly we know that the Sled has been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic but we are still excited to give you Jeff’s conversation with Skyler Cafferata and Blair Colwell. Those two gents are a blast to be around and this interview was a joy to record. Listen on to hear all the shenanigans as they discussed the bands humble beginnings, their opening slot for Insane Clown Posse that never happened, and the brutality of Oshawa.Recorded June 20th, 2019.Track used with full permission from The FAPS.Background Music:Atlantis Jazz Ensemble - UndercurrentsUsed with permission from Atlantis Jazz Ensemble and Marlow Recordshttp://www.marlowrecords.com

Sean got the chance to sit down with Cups N Cakes favourites Shirley & the Pyramids in Calgary at this year’s Sled Island Festival. Their last album “Pure Pain” was a Pick Of The Week when it came out in June 2018, and we’re excited to debut a new song called “Neverdie” from their forthcoming EP at the end of this episode. The new EP is the first the band has recorded with their live lineup in studio, and frontman Aron Zacharias talks with Sean about how he and his bandmates collaborated to bring the energy of their live shows to the new recordings. Of course, there are diversions aplenty with discussions about the Super Nintendo and favourite Sled Island venues which helped pull them out of their respective Friday morning hangovers.Recorded June 21st, 2019.Track used with full permission from Shirley & The Pyramids. Background Music:Atlantis Jazz Ensemble - UndercurrentsUsed with permission from Atlantis Jazz Ensemble and Marlow Recordshttp://www.marlowrecords.com
Motherhood is a self-described “trio of deep thinking rippers” from Fredericton, New Brunswick and in March they released one of 2019’s best albums entitled, “Dear Bongo”. Sean Newton met up with them at Sled Island 2019 to discuss its loose conceptual structure and the ingenious way they recycle and reuse hooks and narrative threads throughout the record. After talking about the release, Sean almost breaks up the band as he pits them against each other in a rapid fire questionnaire where disagreements about Billy Woods, the relative value of cake and pie, and Fredericton pizza joints come to a head.Recorded June 22nd, 2019.Track used with full permission from Motherhood. Background Music:Atlantis Jazz Ensemble - UndercurrentsUsed with permission from Atlantis Jazz Ensemble and Marlow Recordshttp://www.marlowrecords.com

Jeff tracked down Montreal band LAPS for a conversation at Sled Island 2019. The band consists of Heather, Tate, and Scott who join Jeff to discuss their incredible debut album, “Soon Not Often In It” (a former Pick Of The Week), and how Sled Island actually inspired the bands formation. They also paint a picture of the music scene in Fredericton (which is the city where the band formed), before running through the rapid fire questions.Recorded June 19th, 2019.Track used with full permission from LAPS.https://lapslapslap.bandcamp.comBackground Music:Atlantis Jazz Ensemble - UndercurrentsUsed with permission from Atlantis Jazz Ensemble and Marlow Recordshttp://www.marlowrecords.com
Bridal Party’s new album Too Much is one of Sean’s favourite records of 2019 (and it hasn’t even come out yet!); he got the chance to listen to the record before doing this interview at Sled Island 2019. It’s a record where every song is supernaturally likeable; they all twist and turn in a way that’s danceable, unexpected, and completely inevitable. The interview was conducted in a barely furnished Airbnb in Calgary’s Bridgeland neighbourhood, where Sean pulled the couch into the kitchen to avoid the unpleasant ringing of a completely empty living room. They chatted about pop music, Steely Dan, the magical land of Victoria, and of course, Bridal Party’s forthcoming album, Too Much.Recorded June 20th, 2019.Track used with full permission from Bridal Party.https://bridalparty.bandcamp.comBackground Music:Atlantis Jazz Ensemble - UndercurrentsUsed with permission from Atlantis Jazz Ensemble and Marlow Recordshttp://www.marlowrecords.com
Astral Swans is a solo project from Calgarian, Matthew Swann whose previous endeavours include Hot Little Rocket, Extra Happy Ghost!! and GOLD. The music he plays as Astral Swans, combines folk leanings with experimental tendencies and swirls them into an indie style that is utterly unique to this project. Alongside the music’s distinct sound is a lyrical depth that has gotten him noticed around the world. He joined Jeff at the Cups N Cakes Studio a couple weeks before Sled Island 2019 to talk about his 2018 record, Strange Prison, the music scene in Calgary, touring Japan and what the future holds for Astral Swans.Recorded June 2nd, 2019.Track used with full permission from Astral Swans. Background Music:Atlantis Jazz Ensemble - UndercurrentsUsed with permission from Atlantis Jazz Ensemble and Marlow Recordshttp://www.marlowrecords.com
Jeff sits down with Contra and Eboshi from Cartel Madras to discuss an immense amount of things kicking off for this hip-hop duo. The two discuss the evolution of their sound, the story behind their signing to SubPop Records (thanks to a show at Sled Island 2018), their plans to break into the Indian music market and the mystery behind the music video for “Eric Andre”. They also discuss their love of Alberta hip-hop and that although they’re leaving the prairies, they plan to represent Calgary no matter where they live. Finally, Jeff runs through the rapid fire questionnaire where we learn about their love of Freddie Gibbs, their overweight dog Theodore and their love of a good mosh pit.Recorded June 1st, 2019.Track used with full permission from Cartel Madras. Background Music:Atlantis Jazz Ensemble - UndercurrentsUsed with permission from Atlantis Jazz Ensemble and Marlow Recordshttp://www.marlowrecords.com

Her advice this episode comes in the form of a personal story about T’s own big holiday traditions, and we get to the bottom of how to make your dollar stretch on vacation. “The Beer Guy” is a job title that would make anyone jealous, including Dave himself when he first started at Willow Park Wines & Spirits in 2001. Fresh on the job Dave met his predecessor and immediately thought “Whoa, I want to do that!” Today Dave is one of the most recognizable people in Calgary’s craft beer industry. We find out just what it takes to make it into the cooler at Willow Park in today’s craft landscape with over 100 breweries in Alberta. Josh and Dave exchange war stories about the most recent Calgary Beer Festival, which these two Game of Thrones fans compare to the battle for Winterfell. Are you suffering from Sled Island FOMO? Me too. Here's 60 minutes of my favourites of this year's festival cohort.
Last time Jeremy Haywood-Smith was on the podcast, he was covering songs by other local artists at a live event we were hosting. Now we're sitting down (in the food court) to talk about his own music and the part-band/part-solo project/all-encompassing moniker [JayWood](http://jaywood1.bandcamp.com/). Having returned from Sled Island and unexpectedly finding himself bandless, Jeremy has refocused his efforts on the experimental, dreamy indie-pop of his solo work, with a full-length LP on the way in the not-so-distant future. Thanks to everyone who has supported the podcast thus far. Thanks to supporters like you, we can keep churning out interviews twice a week! If you like the show, please head down to [patreon.com/witchpolice](http://www.patreon.com/witchpolice), and for as little as $1 a month (less than 12 cents an episode), you can help keep the lights on! This episode is brought to you by our friends at the Park Theatre, who have a whole calendar of great upcoming shows. Check it out on their website for more details! ...and speaking of the Park, be sure to check out the inaugural [Manitoba Podcast Festival](http://www.facebook.com/events/2188824571388548/), happening there Sept. 30!

Success 5000 is an Edmonton-based duo specializing in musical comedy. They have headlined every stand-up night in Edmonton, toured the country, performed on CBC's The Irrelevant Show, and been featured in comedy festivals such as Vancouver Sketchfest, Toronto Sketchfest, Philly Sketchfest, Seattle Sketchfest, Sled Island and Improvaganza. They have released two full-length comedy albums: a studio recording entitled Laughcore, and a live album, We'll Fix It In Post, recorded at the Sewing Machine Factory in Edmonton. Self-described as “musical comedy that doesn't suck,” their songs blend absurd humour with biting cynicism. Reviews have praised their show for its “self-depreciating, nihilistic, and sarcastic humour that's both current and genuinely hilarious.” Success 5000 website Success 5000 on Facebook

Chastity Belt: The north-western town of Walla Walla, Washington is where Chastity Belt call home and where they create the powerful wall of chords that gel with solid beats that are denser than the water in the ocean. Julia Shapiro, Lydia Lund, Annie Truscott and Gretchen Grimm formed the band is 2010 whilst all were attending the local liberal arts establishment, Whitman College and 2013 was the year they released their first long-player ‘No Regrets’. Their transcendent and charming live shows have taken them on tour to Europe twice, earned them the support slot on one of Courtney Barnett’s multiple US tours, seen them share stages with Wire, Death Cab For Cutie and Protomartyr as well as gracing festival line ups including Sasquatch, Sled Island, The Great Escape and NXNE. Recorded live at the PBS FM Studios in Melbourne on the 4th of October 2016. Hobo Magic: Hailing from Sunshine Coast in Queensland, our next artists have a tendency to make heads nod and air guitars suddenly appear with their brand of Sabbath-esque stoner-groove. Their name is Hobo Magic. They have 2 records out with their third record coming out in 2017. Recorded at the PBS FM Melbourne Studio on the 29th of June 2016. Horsehunter: Horsehunter have been sonically brooding since 2012, but already sound like a band so tight and wise beyond their years. Their interests include Slayer, kites and tacos. Two years in the making, their debut album ‘Caged In Flesh‘ melted faces in 2015. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 7-8pm, Sunday 18th of December 2016. Show production and engineering: Branko Cosic.
