I read a piece recently that got me thinking that data breaches might be inevitable. Disclosure: This was written by Redgate, for whom I work, titled "Data breaches May Be Inevitable—Compliance Failures Don't Have to Be". It's based on our research with the State of Database Landscape survey as well as feedback and conversations with customers. The thing that caught my eye was the first part: data breaches may be inevitable. Do you think that's true? Are we doomed to lose data in our organizations, not as a possibility, but something that will happen at some unknown time in the future? Those of you who have suffered breaches might agree with this, but for those of you who haven't had to deal with that situation, are you resigned to it happening at some point? The DORA organization is constantly researching how to better produce software at any organization. This is similar to work done by Carnegie Mellon Software Engineering Institute many years ago. Both groups are trying to determine what things help engineers work better and produce high-quality software. On the DORA site, there is a database change management page, where they recommend approaches to managing database schemas. The main thing they talk about is treating all schema changes as migrations, which is something some people do. However, many teams also like a desired-state-configuration approach, where they just deploy all the changes from dev (or QA) to prod in a state-based flow. Both can work, but I do think as software matures (and becomes legacy), migrations are preferred. The article lists lots of frameworks in different languages. Flyway is among them, which is the product on which I work and sell at Redgate. If you haven't looked at a migrations framework, I'd recommend you do so. They do really give you a tremendous amount of control and flexibility. There are trade-offs, so I'm not blindly recommending this approach, but it's worth educating yourself on how migrations frameworks work. Read the rest of Database DevOps Recommendations

Is testing out pgAdmin on your to-do list? In this episode of the podcast, we chat with Ryan Booz, a PostgreSQL advocate at Redgate, about how a SQL Server professional might begin a dive into PostgreSQL, one of the most popular open source databases in the world. Ryan came from a career background in SQL Server, but after experiencing his accidental "jump-into-the-deep-end" PostgreSQL moment, he hasn't looked back. Naturally, open source presents DBAs and their organizations with many desirable features, but there are certain drawbacks as well. Ryan shares how he navigated his transition into PostgreSQL and raises some points to consider if you are thinking about a switch. We discuss a few of the land mines you might encounter along the way as well as terminology differences in this space. Be sure to check out Planet PostgreSQL for the most recent blog posts from the very folks that are contributing code to the PostgreSQL project. Have you shifted from SQL Server to PostgreSQL? How'd it go? Did you get any good take-aways from today's podcast or have some questions? Leave us a comment and some love ❤️ on LinkedIn, X, Facebook, or Instagram. The show notes for today's episode can be found at Episode 277: PostgreSQL for the SQL Server Crowd. Have fun on the SQL Trail!
At the Redgate Summit in London, I ran a panel talking about Platform Engineering and how we can make developers more productive. One of the questions from our audience revolved around AI (Artificial Intelligence) technologies and how they might assist. As a note, AI tech includes a lot of different things, like machine learning (ML) among other things, but a lot of people seeing the media and hype around LLMs (large language models) think those are AI. They see AI as what is implemented in ChatGPT and Copilot, which is correct, but incomplete. One of the panelists, Jeff Smith of Redgate, said that he views the output from AI as a first draft, something that bootstraps further work by a human. This can save time and can help someone be more productive, but it's a starting point and a boost, not a final product. Read the rest of Using AI for the First Draft
Pack your bags and take a trip to Mexico in these radio mysteries. First, Burt Lancaster plots a double cross in "The Big Shot" from Suspense (originally aired on CBS on September 9, 1948). Philip Marlowe is hired to find out what a woman is up to in "The Mexican Boat Ride" (originally aired on CBS on July 30, 1949), and the cops of Dragnet chase a pair of fugitives in "The Big Border" (originally aired on NBC on March 20, 1952). Finally, Dana Andrews tries to thwart the plans of Soviet saboteurs trying to sneak into the US in "The Red Gate" from I Was a Communist for the FBI.
It seems that when I travel to offices these days, it's standard for most desk setups to have two monitors. I think all the desks at Redgate have a docking station and two monitors for people to use. They also convert to standing desks, which is handy. I have a standing desk that I use regularly, and it's nice to have that option when I visit an office. At a number of customer sites, I've seen similar setups, sometimes with laptop/monitor lifts instead of desks that rise. Recently I saw a docking station announced that can support four monitors. I wonder how many of you want, need, or use more than two monitors. While there is often a standard in offices, since many of us work part or full-time at home, perhaps you have a different setup. Maybe you have one or two large monitors instead of 3 or 4 smaller ones. I'd certainly be interested to know if any of you have more than 4 monitors. Read the rest of Multiple Display Productivity
I assume most of you reading this work with SQL Server, at least for some of your workday. I know there are plenty of you who also support Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL, or some other database platform. The results in our (Redgate's) State of Database Landscape report showed that many organizations, indeed most, have more than one database platform in production. This was also a theme in our Data Community Summit and Redgate Summit keynotes, where Ryan and Grant discussed their journey to learn a new platform (PostgreSQL). One, a requirement (Ryan) for a new job, and another, an opportunity (Grant) as the company focus shifted. I assume some of you out there have had similar experiences either moving towards, or away from, SQL Server. Read the rest of The Journey to Change
Redgate released the results of their State of Database Landscape recently, and I was part of a webinar where Beca Parker, Ryan Booz, and I discussed the results. As we were talking, one of the things that struck me was the high number of people who had picked skills as being a challenge for their organization. In a single environment, skillset requirements and training were the number one challenge, and it was listed as the number one obstacle to implementing a DevOps approach. While this industry is full of self-taught individuals who have spent time learning new technologies and tools, it's somewhat amazing that training continues to be an issue. Many organizations limit their training budgets and time allocated to employees while continuing to expand the number of technologies and platforms they use. This is one reason why I think changing database platforms to avoid licensing costs is unlikely to save you money anytime soon. Retraining staff and developing competence takes time. Perhaps this is also one reason why many companies look to the cloud, thinking that they can reduce the amount of upskilling needed by their staff if the cloud vendor manages the systems. I've always valued having a team of people I know and can work with. While I haven't had a lot of long-term jobs before Redgate, I have had a few positions that lasted more than a year and appreciated working with the same group for a long time. We might gain or lose a person, but overall, the structure of the team was the same day after day. This was a comfortable atmosphere, and I liked knowing who I was working with each day. At Redgate, we have had some stable teams of people, but in our engineering area, we move teams around. There is an annual re-teaming each December/January where engineers can choose to leave their team and ask to transfer to another one. They get to put in their top three choices (or remain on their team), and we do a good job of trying to match up everyone's preferences. The number and charter of teams do change a bit each year, so engineers get visibility into the structure we're planning before they mark a preference. It seems from our internal reports that we match up 99% of engineers with their first or second choices (first choice is in the high 80s). Read the rest of Un-Stable Teams

I have had quite a few employers in my career. Of the ones that paid me for computer work, I'll say that there were 3 great ones (1 I owned), 2 average ones, and 3 poor ones. I've had a few other minor times or contract situations where I didn't really judge or care one way or the other. A lot of time is spent at work, but if it's days/week/(few months), I can deal with most situations. That being said, even at the poor places, I learned a lot and I grew, so I don't regret them or wouldn't want them removed from my past. There are always good and bad things about any job. As I tell my kids, every job is a job some days, even my amazing position at Redgate. Recently my employer, Redgate Software, was on a number of Best Places to Work lists in the US. We took 28th in the US (5th in Austin, 4th in LA, 10th in NY) with higher rankings when you filtered to mid-sized businesses. While I don't work in those places, I do go to our offices, and I think we have an amazing culture, workplace environment, support, and training for staff. We're a mid-sized company now with a bit over 500 people, which is amazing. I was person 146, but I've known the company since it was 8 people. As it's grown, I think Redgate has done a great job under Simon Galbraith's leadership of building a place to work that is productive and profitable, but enjoyable and interesting. Our current CEO, Jakub Lamik, has continued to help Redgate thrive, both as a business and an employer. Read the rest of A Great Place to Work

I work with a lot of customers that are trying to find better ways to build and deploy database code. Some of them use a state or model method with SQL Compare or another Redgate product, and some want to use Flyway and its hybrid migration-based framework. It's always interesting to me how customers lean one way or the other, for various reasons. No matter which choice people make, we know that using migrations is more effort than a state-based approach. However, I think that it's a better approach, especially because no matter how simple or smooth you think your development process is, at some time there will be a situation that needs a more complex approach. a migrations-based framework allows you to handle the complexity smoothly, without depending on a person to sort out the issues. Bob started as a .NET Developer back in the early days of .NET 1.1 with the goal of converting ASP pages to ASP.NET web applications. During that time, his career progressed from .NET Developer to Lead Developer, to Architect, to where he is today. As a technical director at Octopus Deploy, he helps solve complex customer problems as Octopus Deploy. As a team, we help answer both technical and non-technical questions. Bob has been a fan of making it easier to deploy software since the early 2010s, when working for a company the only time to deploy to production was 2 a.m. Saturday. That has led him down the path of CI/CD, DevOps, TDD, and automating all things. He was exposed to Redgate tooling and Octopus Deploy while working at Farm Credit Services of America and has been a fan ever since. In his current role, Bob gets to work with a variety of technologies every day. Topics of Discussion: [1:41] One of the biggest high points in Bob's career was being one of the champions of automating database deployments, and seeing that spread across all these other teams. [3:51] Also, he adopted test-driven development and was able to improve the speed of his application from 500 milliseconds per request to 50 milliseconds. [5:20] Bob talks about test-driven development. [7:00] The rules of thumb for people to get right to make running their software system more painless. [8:14] The problem of database management. [10:10] There are two schools of thought: state-based management and migration approach. [12:59] Distributed source control and having a build server are two of the main tools to consider. [15:28] The critical ingredients of monitoring and recovery. [22:07] The two ways to define a tenant. [24:11] One of the advantages of multi-tenancy applications is having a shared application and a shared database, where all the data of all the customers is intermingled with one customer's data. The great post-pandemic, post-Great-Resignation, hybrid/remote/in-the-office work debate continues. It seems almost every week I see more stories that report on, hype, attempt to prove, or otherwise stoke emotions about whether the future of work for many people is more likely in any of these three situations. One company mandates everyone back in the office, another goes completely remote, and it seems many can't decide and have some sort of hybrid approach. Your boss might have strong opinions on one of these situations, which may or may not align with your organization. I see CEOs wanting one thing and individual managers sometimes wanting another. As much as I like remote working, and I've been based out of my home for over two decades, I also like seeing people and I am regularly traveling to the various Redgate offices (along with Grant and Ryan). At Redgate Software, we've been trialing Copilot from GitHub with our developers. I managed to get access for this experiment and have tried a few things, though I'm not sure I've found it very useful. I'll continue to work with Copilot, but for now, I just don't find Copilot AI helping me with the types of tasks I do. However, our chief of technology, Jeff Foster, was interviewed about how he sees AI and Copilot in Redgate. It's a good read, and I found a few fascinating things in the piece. First, I was worried about this a bit, as we have explicit guidelines in developers that say we can't take the output from an AI and put it in our codebase. We worry about legalities since we sell software. How does that work with Copilot? Read the rest of We're Not Faster with AI
Everyone learns differently. Grant Fritchey and Ryan Booz, database advocates at Redgate focusing on PostgreSQL, talk with co-hosts Claire Giordano and Pino de Candia to explore the learning resources available to developers and users in all the corners of the PostgreSQL world. What drives you to learn: need or curiosity? What can podcasts teach us while we bike to work? Are conference talks good for growing skills, or are they better for networking? What about books? And do older books still have much to offer? It turns out, most people need much more than one approach to build their knowledge. Ryan is an Advocate at Redgate focusing on PostgreSQL. Ryan has been working as a PostgreSQL advocate, developer, DBA, and product manager for more than 20 years, primarily working with time-series data on PostgreSQL and the Microsoft Data Platform. Ryan is a long-time DBA, starting with MySQL and Postgres in the late '90s. He spent more than 15 years working with SQL Server before returning to PostgreSQL full-time in 2018. He's at the top of his game when he's learning something new about the data platform or teaching others about the technology he loves. Topics of Discussion: [1:23] Ryan's background and his love of helping people with their data. [6:06] What are some features of Postgres that really intrigued Ryan? [6:12] What are some of the choices in the database world that people should be well versed in? [11:00] Is there a marketplace for these extensions? [15:00] Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and many others have been very interested over the last 3‒4 years in the open-source code base. [15:50] Is there any environment or platform where Postgres can't run? [17:24] Can we use a downsized database engine? [19:19] Ryan discusses Amazon Redshift. [23:58] What's the state of the modern Redgate tools? [26:42] What are the top three tools developers should reach for? [27:00] What are the features of Flyway? Who should create documentation for software? In many companies, it's the developers. In fact, in Redgate, often our developers are tasked with updating articles for products on our documentation site. We do have a streamlined process that has developers can submitting changes in some format (markdown? ) and an automation process that automatically updates the site as part of a release. However, we also have marketing people who are in charge of external articles and communications. They ensure that our product learning and university content is updated. They work with technical people to produce, edit, and publish content. These could be developers, advocates such as Grant or Ryan, or even partners. Our Friends of Redgate also help with content. There was a Slack thread at Redgate recently where a developer was showing some code where they decided to use the "extra" column from the information_schema.columns view. They were making decisions on how to detect certain metadata about a column based on the data in this column. Apparently, the data in here is overloaded for different options that might be set on a table. This caught my eye because I had no idea there was a column named "extra" in this view. I flipped over to SSMS and decided to check what was being stored in here. To my surprise, there was no "extra" column. As I dug in a little deeper in the thread, I realized the developer was talking about Information_schema.columns in a MySQL database. Read the rest of Information Schema Strangeness

Steve Mitchell had not been working for Irish telecom giant Eircom for even half a year before he decided that it was time to explore other opportunities. For the previous 4 months, the seasoned operations executive had been commuting weekly to Dublin, Ireland, from his home in the United Kingdom as he sought to nurture Eircom's waning mobile customer relationships. However, Eircom's CFO upended Mitchell's plans by offering him the position of corporate finance director. “I went over there for a few months and ended up staying for 4-1/2 years,” recalls Mitchell, who still seems surprised by the CFO's job offer. “I hadn't even worked in finance during the previous 8 years.” Over the next 18 months, Mitchell's responsibilities would expand to include investor relations, treasury, M&A, and running Eircom's cap ex committee. Besides regularly delivering investor presentations, at one point Mitchell found himself before the European Commission, defending Eircom's competitive position relative to recent telecom market consolidation. “Since those first couple of years with Eircom, nothing has really phased me,” remarks Mitchell, whose appointment came as Eircom was making the business case with its board and investors to lock in a first-mover advantage when it came to rolling out a 4G network across Ireland. Given the breadth of Mitchell's functional responsibilities, it soon became clear that he was also expected to rally the internal finance team to bring forth the financial insights required to move the business case forward. “The finance people working on the fiber rollout business case could have either sat and fiddled with spreadsheets for months or else put the bit between their teeth and realized that they were about to drive the biggest decision that the business was going to make all year,” comments Mitchell, who adds that while his years at Eircom revealed to him the complexity of leadership decision-making, they also exposed how finance looms large. Says Mitchell: “A couple of really good pieces of analysis from the finance team ended up driving management and board decisions with regard to where that cap ex would go and whether we were ready to make the move.” –Jack Sweeney
