Enemy Feminisms: Terfs, Policewomen, and Girlbosses Against Liberation (Haymarket Books, 2025) is a provocative compendium of the feminisms we love to dismiss and making the case for the bold, liberatory feminist politics we'll need to stand against fascism, nationalism, femmephobia, and cisness. In recent years, "white feminism" and girlboss feminism have taken a justified beating. We know that leaning in won't make our jobs any more tolerable and that white women have proven to be, at best, unreliable allies. But in a time of rising fascism, ceaseless attacks on reproductive justice, and violent transphobia, we need to reckon with what Western feminism has wrought if we have any hope of building the feminist world we need. Sophie Lewis offers an unflinching tour of enemy feminisms, from 19th century imperial feminists and police officers to 20th century KKK feminists and pornophobes to today's anti-abortion and TERF feminists. Enemy feminisms exist. Feminism is not an inherent political good. Only when we acknowledge that can we finally reckon with the ways these feminisms have pushed us toward counterproductive and even violent ends. And only then can we finally engage in feminist strategizing that is truly antifascist. At once a left transfeminist battlecry against cisness, a decolonial takedown of nationalist womanhoods, and a sex-radical retort to femmephobia in all its guises, Enemy Feminisms is above all a fierce, brilliant love letter to feminism. About the Author Sophie Lewis is a writer. Her books, Full Surrogacy Now: Feminism Against Family, and Abolish the Family: A Manifesto for Care and Liberation, have been translated into nine languages.Sophie grew up in France, half-British, half-German, but now lives in Philadelphia and teaches online courses on utopian theory at the Brooklyn Institute for Social Research. Jonny and Heather discuss Heather's new novel, Goodbye Hello, an unconventional romance that begins with grief at a funeral. In the back half of the show, they examine new turns in the anti-trans rhetoric of TERFs and transphobes, turns meant to be rebuttals to arguments for trans righs. They offer rebuttals to the rebuttals and note the pervasive function of caricature as a tool of scapegoating embedded in all the antitrans rhetoric.
Our Patron Book Club joins us to discuss Gretchen Felker-Martin's "Manhunt", visceral horror-thrillers, section transitions, interchangeable characters, physical descriptions of characters, depictions of trans genitalia, sexualizing a wide varieties of body types, TERFs and anti-vaxxers, replacing PCs with NPCs, the Broo in Runequest, overland exploration in Forbidden Lands, parental access restrictions in libraries, and much more!

Courtney & André react to THEE Orlando Pride's historic season that ended with them becoming the second ever club to win the Shield and Championship in the same season. We talk about seeing what they were building, doing it for Marta, the greatness of Barbra Banda, and Black coaches. Then we look at the rest of the NWSL awards and discuss Croix Bethune's absurd season and Temwa Chawinga wrecking the league in her debut year. We also look ahead to the USWNT's upcoming friendlies versus England and Netherlands. André is frustrated at the impending 'Horan at the 10' thing, while both of us hope Lily Yohannes gets substantial minutes as the box-to-box midfielder we've been missing. Then we finally do a Heated & Hyped segment, and it's an important one. Courtney addresses the gross gross and journalistically anti-factual and harmful Telegraph piece, while André sheds light on a piece by Shireen Ahmed calling out women's soccer over their silence on the suffering in Gaza. In this episode we talk to Elizabeth Wilson, a professor of gender, sexuality and women's studies at Emory University, a leading scholar on the intersections between feminism and biology, and the author of Gut Feminism. We talk about everything from what feminism can learn from biology to TERFs (trans exclusionary radical feminists), penises, Freud and technology. Note: this episode was recorded in Spring 2023.
Idaho's inhumane anti-trans law has had the exact affect Christian Nationalists wanted. Passed with help from TERFs, it's wrecking kids. Meanwhile, the Worst Secretary makes a last ditch case to Israel.
While the political ties in the US and Europe are moving more and more to the right, it seems like so-called “Gender Critical Feminists”, aka Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminists T3RFs seem to feel comfortable with this reality. This episode is an analysis on why it seems like “Gender Critical Feminists” are so quick to work with the far right and white supremacists. This episode is not about the “biology of gender”, but in the same way I don't need a PhD in astronomy to know that the earth is not flat, I don't need to be a scientist with a PhD to know that trans women are women. In this episode we will discuss how and why non-white women's bodies are often under extreme scrutiny, do Gender critical feminists care about white working-class women? And why. How the far-right and gender critical feminists are working together nowadays, and why white supremacists and TERFs seem to support each other. Hi cis friends! Why do you stare at us? I mean, I think I know why, and so do you. And you have to know how rude it is. So then why do you do it anyway? Let's talk about just how often it happens, the ludicrous lengths you will go to in order to keep staring at us, and how incredibly insulting it is when we already do SO much just to get you to leave us alone. “While some might argue that collaboration with fascists, TERFs, and racist edgelords does not constitute endorsement of violent and anti-liberation views, we disagree. There can be no innocent collaboration with such people.” That was the official statement from Hiding Press, the small, independent poetry press that was set to publish writer Emmalea Russo's fourth book of poetry. But when word got out that she had been “collaborating” with the wrong people, they canceled the book. By collaborations, they meant writing for certain journals and appearing as a guest on certain podcasts. By alt-right or fascist-adjacent they were talking about magazines like Compact, a publication that, according to its mission statement, “seeks a new political center devoted to the common good.” In this conversation, Emmalea talks about the “chain of contamination” that causes panic and public disassociation with anyone even remotely associated with someone designated as “bad.” She also discusses her forthcoming novel, Vivienne, which is about a septuagenarian artist who's canceled online over rumor and innuendo. GUEST BIO Emmalea Russo is a writer and astrologer. Her books of poetry are G, Wave Archive, Confetti, and Magenta. Recent work has appeared in Artforum, BOMB, Spike Art Magazine, and Los Angeles Review of Books. Her first novel, Vivienne, is forthcoming in September. A shorter version of this essay was originally published as a Substack Note.If Trump wins, it will be because he has an immovable base. There's nothing he can say to repulse them. At a campaign rally in January 2016, he claimed, “I could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn't lose voters.”If Trump wins, it will be because he's actually funny sometimes. Elizabeth Warren is a Methodist white woman from Massachusetts who tried to prove she is Cherokee with a DNA test that said 0.09% to 1.5%, all because Trump kept calling her “Pocahontas.”But mostly, if Trump wins, it will be because of the left. Because Ruth Bader Biden's “senior moments” are serious, yet he refuses to step aside. Because we've been gaslit for years with Drag Queen Story Hour and trans literalists who scream at lesbians for not wanting to go home with men in dresses or who threaten to rape TERFs.Because of the sickening antisemitism we have witnessed around October 7. Because of the Stalinist nature of cancel culture. Because of increasingly brazen anti-white racism. Because of CRT and BLM and DEI. Because we are done with everything and everyone being called racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, and imperialist.Because we see the impact on young men and boys from being told they are inherently scum and guilty of toxic masculinity. Because we are sick of hearing the lie that we live in a white supremacist, rape culture. Because of the endless disparaging of our great nation, its history, its practices, the Christian faith of many, and every dead white man of great stature.Because of the anti-Western, anti-science, anti-Enlightenment values that the left has adopted. Because none of this stuff has made the country any better and yet the belief that it would was the only reason anyone went along with any of it.If Trump wins, it will be because the woke left simply won't wake up.The Radicalist is a reader-supported publication. On this episode of Unsupervised Learning Razib talks to Colin Wright, a returning guest, host of the Reality's Last Stand Substack and a fellow at the Manhattan Institute. Before digging deep into the biology of sex and the cultural politics of gender ideology, Razib and Wright touch on what's been happening to Jonathan Pruitt, Wright's erstwhile advisor. He was accused of academic fraud in 2019, and dozens of papers where Pruitt was the primary contributor of data had to be retracted. Notably, papers where his mentees collected the data did not suffer from the same problems. Evidence quickly mounted that Pruitt's whole career productivity was built on fraudulent data. As of 2024, Pruitt's university, McMaster, where he had an endowed chair, found him to be guilty of fraud, while his doctoral dissertation from University of Tennessee was withdrawn. He resigned from his university in 2022, and embarked on a fantasy writing career. Today he is the author of the dark fantasy, The Amber Menhir. Then Razib and Wright talk about the current state of gender ideology, and the conflicts around trans rights in the US and abroad. Wright, who is working on a book on sex and gender, believes we may have seen the high tide of gender ideology, with the retreat occuring earlier abroad in places like Britain, where youth medical gender transition has been severely curtailed. He also reviews the major terms and concepts, like the difference between sex and gender, and also what exactly is meant by binary sex and why it is so important in our ability to understand biology generally and patterns in human society specifically. Finally, Razib asks Wright to expound on the different factions in the “gender wars,” from gender critical TERFs to social conservatives and queer theorists. https://razib.substack.com This is where you will find all the podcasts from Razib Khan's Substack and original video content. Recorded at the Battle of Ideas festival 2023 on Saturday 28 October at Church House, London. ORIGINAL INTRODUCTION The self-image of Western societies as cosmopolitan, liberal and tolerant has collapsed of late, with a darker view taking hold of people as extreme, hate-filled and hurtful. For example, in the wake of the Hamas attacks on Israel, anti-Semitism – ‘the oldest hatred' – has come forcefully into public view. Accordingly, controlling ‘hate speech' has become a major focus for critics and campaigners, as well as legislators and regulators. They proceed in the belief that, as one Guardian commentator put it: ‘Words of hate create an ethos of hate, an atmosphere of hate, a political, social Petri dish of hate. Eventually, spoken words become deeds.' Campaigners say escalating incidences of hate justify interventions. The most recent published date show 155,841 offences recorded in the year to March – up 26 per cent from the previous year – with hate crimes against transgender people seeing the biggest increase, jumping by 56 per cent since last year. Meanwhile, in the past five years, the number of recorded non-crime hate incidents (NCHI) has grown to 120,000. Critics say the nebulous definition and subjective interpretation of hate, which is largely in the eye of the victim or reporter, is trivialising such ‘crimes'. But is there more to this issue than definitional disarray? Some say the problem is being inflated by ‘fishing' exercises. The Citizen's Advice Bureau, for example, says ‘it is always best' to ‘act early' and report incidents even if ‘unsure whether the incident is a criminal offence… or serious enough to be reported'. Meanwhile, Police Scotland has promised to set up a new unit to tackle ‘hate crimes' such as misgendering and denying men access to ladies' toilets. Some say that what is labelled ‘hate speech' is increasingly being weaponised to silence opponents and narrow viewpoint diversity. Groups such as Stop Funding Hate aim to persuade advertisers to pull support from broadcasters and publications on the grounds that views aired spread hate and division. More broadly, fuelled by identity politics, competing groups too often accuse other identities of hate and bigotry – demonising those we disagree with is a tactic used across the political spectrum. On one side, people are labeled hateful TERFs, gammon, alt-right or xenophobic, while the other side are hate-driven snowflakes, misogynists, Remoaners, pinko commies and cry-bullies. What are the prospects of making political exchange less toxic and productive, if labelling those we disagree with as hate-mongers continues to escalate? How should defenders of freedom best make the case for free speech over hate speech? How should we understand what counts as hate speech, and how do we account for its rise to become central to how Western societies are organising their legal systems and public life? Seven years ago this month, National Geographic published an issue that they now refer to as “historic.” With a cover featuring a young boy with long pink hair and pink leggings, they announced a “Gender Revolution.” The newsstand edition featured a different cover, a child and a collection of hip young people with identifying labels, such as “transgender female,” “androgynous,” and “bi-gender.” Our perceptions of those who are transgender, these covers suggested, should not be simply men with a fetish. Rather, embracing new understandings of gender was about the kids. In addition to the articles explaining the emerging “scientific consensus” around these things, and why “gender” is “fluid” and should be thought of as distinct from one's biology, one article focused on the challenge of “toxic masculinity.” Five others promised that rethinking gender would elevate women. The journalists accurately predicted that a revolution was occurring, even though some who read the issue (me included) thought their announcement premature. However, seven years later, it's clear that the gender revolution has done everything but elevate women. As child psychiatrist Miriam Grossman, author of Lost in Trans Nation, explains, the number of teen girls “with recent-onset discomfort with their sex is up 4,000 percent [emphasis added].” Especially vulnerable are girls with comorbidities, like autism, an association that even one of the National Geographic articles acknowledged. People who are autistic are three to six times more likely to not identify with their birth sex. Child psychiatrist Dr. Steven Grcevich, the founder and president of a ministry for families with hidden disabilities, called this “[t]he scandal that nobody is talking about … the vulnerability of kids with pre-existing medical conditions and autism and other developmental disabilities to this gender ideology.” According to Dr. Grossman, this social contagion has been especially driven by social media, which has become a virtual “assembly line” for challenging girls to question their sense of self. Medical professionals jumped in, resulting in a trail of mutilated bodies, sterilization, bone-density loss, and other irreversible damage done. Women have been hurt in other ways too. According to the Telegraph, a male student recently attacked female students in a gender-neutral bathroom. In sports such as in jiujitsu and volleyball, girls have been overpowered and injured, not to mention the other issues of fairness of competition, scholarship opportunities, and privacy concerns. Seven years ago, the first article in the “historic” National Geographic issue promised that “science is helping us understand gender.” In what became a frequently used “bait and switch” tactic, the article focused on the incredibly rare conditions called “intersex” or “disorders of sex development.” Not mentioned in the article is something that Abigail Favale clarified in her book, that “[i]n 99.98% of these cases, sex is readily recognizable as unambiguously male or female.” Instead, the author lumps physical disorders of sex development with the mental conditions of gender confusion, via a mishmash of edgy psychology and personal narratives, with one neuroscientist stirred in for good measure. The takeaway is clear: All that matters is what an individual feels on the inside. And yet, there are clear signs that this revolution is slowing. Finland, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and Norway have all drawn back from providing so-called “gender-affirming care” to young people because the science is not settled. Though the Biden Administration seems committed to advancing the revolution by force, in states such as Missouri and Ohio, lawmakers are taking definitive steps to protect children. The credit for slowing down what seemed to be an unstoppable train headed off the cliff goes to a coalition of unlikely allies: from the so-called “TERFs” (or “trans-exclusionary radical feminists”) like Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling, to brave young people like Chloe Cole who have “de-transitioned," filed lawsuits, and testified before state legislatures, to Matt Walsh. Twenty-two states have now stopped or limited so-called “gender-affirming care” for minors. National Geographic may have thought that the “gender revolution” was inevitable, but it's time for an update on the cultural state-of-play. Next Tuesday, January 16, at 7 p.m. ET, the next free online Breakpoint forum will provide “The Real Facts About Gender Ideology.” Featured presenters are child psychiatrists, Dr. Miriam Grossman and Dr. Steven Grcevich. Episode 96.1: Thanksgiving, Playground games, Wood Clogs, Kaepas, TERFs, and the Fall of Civilizations
It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! Emma speaks with writer and historian Rebecca Jane Morgan to discuss their recent book Gender Heretics: Evangelicals, Feminists, and the Alliance against Trans Liberation. Then, she speaks with Jonah Walters, postdoctoral scholar at UCLA's Institute for Society and Genetics, to discuss a book compilation he co-edited entitled Only The Good Die Young: The Verdict Against Henry Kissinger, published via Jacobin and Verso Books. First, Emma runs through updates on Jake Sullivan's visit to various authoritarian utopias, Israel's indiscriminate bombing, growing backlash to Israel, Biden's bleak polling, the House impeachment inquiry, January 6th, and Floridian education action, before touching on Israel's abuse of the Two-State solution. Rebecca Jane Morgan then joins, first taking on the definition of Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminism, before stepping back to walk through the longer history of Evangelical Christianity to trans identity, including a long period of a mixed yet positive recognition of the community – particularly with the parallels of “rebirth” – over the 20th Century. Moving into the 2000s, Morgan tackles the role of the Gender Recognition Act in the UK in igniting Evangelical backlash – largely because of its policies around same-sex marriage – whereas the US' legislative body took until the 2010s for the bathroom debate came to the fore. Rebecca concludes the conversation by walking through the particular alignment of Terfs and Evangelicals over their somatophobia towards trans people, and what that means for the fight for trans rights moving forward. Jonah Walters and Emma then explore the life and legacy of Henry Kissinger as they walk through his prevalent (and bipartisan) role in US politics, and his ideological grounding in pure American hegemony, before stepping back to assess the importance of his rise to power during the Cold War, bolstering the growth of America's capital order internationally while continuously and intentionally undermining any liberatory and anti-capitalist movements in the third world. Wrapping up, Walters parses through the obscene death count that follows Kissinger to his grave. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they talk with Eddie from Ft. Worth about culturally undermining the KKK, explore the absolute vitriol that zionists have been leveling against their students, and discuss the return of severe islamophobia in the form of fear-of-arabic-words. Tommy the Music Guy tackles some music recommendations and explores tensions between the US and Mexico, and Josh Hawley presses a judicial nomination on the ethics of being brown, plus, your calls and IMs! The HBS co-hosts learn why it's not just about pronouns. In recent years, society has witnessed a seismic significant shift in our understanding of gender. For some, the binary notion of gender, once seen as immutable and fixed, has given way to a more inclusive and fluid understanding of identity… a transformation that has brought to the forefront the lived experiences of transgender individuals, who have long grappled with issues of self-identity, societal acceptance, and the philosophical underpinnings of gender itself. For others, the emergence of trans issues and trans people has motivated a passionate and often violent kind of re-entrenchment. The refusal of trans recognition and trans rights, for those on the political right, is not just a matter of attitudinal disposition or theory, but actual legislation.Transgender individuals often find themselves at the intersection of various philosophical disciplines, from ethics to epistemology and metaphysics. Questions about the moral obligations society owes to its transgender members, the authenticity of one's gender identity, and the implications of gender fluidity for our understanding of reality are just a few areas in which trans philosophers have made important contributions in the past several decades. Philosophy can also be blamed—or credited, depending on one's views—with the rise and influence of trans-exclusionary radical feminists, or TERFs, whose rhetoric and views sharply divides not only philosophy Twitter, but the discipline itself. But discussions about trans philosophy extends beyond academia into the realm of social justice and activism. Trans issues encompass a wide range of concerns, including healthcare access, legal recognition, and the protection of civil and human rights. These practical considerations are deeply rooted in philosophical discussions not only about sex and gender, but also about fairness, equality, and the social contract, adding an urgent and concrete dimension to the work of people like our guest today, Talia Mae Bettcher (California State University, Los Angeles), author of the 2019 essay "What is Trans Philosophy?".Full episode notes at this link:https://hotelbarpodcast.com/podcast/episode-117-trans-philosophy-with-talia-mae-bettcher-------------------If you enjoy Hotel Bar Sessions podcast, please be sure to subscribe and submit a rating/review! This episode explores the two key reasons that the moronic Left seeks to brand gender critical women (slurred as 'TERFs') as fascists. Firstly, we discuss that no one seems to know what an actual fascist is anymore and so the label is applied haphazardly and erroneously as an attempt to discredit any and all opposition to Transgenderism. Secondly, that it's an attempt to apply No Platform to gender critical women (historically, the tactic of No Platform was used only against fascists) in order to shut down debate, whilst also legitimising violent tactics (again, historically, it was only fascists that were considered dangerous enough that street violence could be used against them. Today, Trans Rights Activists seek to move gender critical women into the category 'fascist' so that violence against them becomes justified). The episode uses the example of McLibel defendant and Spy Cop victim Helen Steel, leftwing activist royalty within the UK, now branded a 'fascist' despite decades of work on the Left. Plus, the Melbourne Let Women Speak event and how the above reasoning played out against the women who gathered there.
James and Mia talk about how transphobes have targeted sport as a way to advance their agenda and how they've managed to persuade cycling's governing body to effectively ban trans women from elite competition.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Connor interviews author Helen Joyce, Director of Advocacy at Sex Matters and former editor of The Economist, about the history of gender ideology, if feminism remains tenable, and if TERFs and conservatives can remain in coalition once trans activism is vanquished.

Today we welcome Dr. Carole Hooven. For the past six years, she served as a lecturer and co-director of undergraduate studies at Harvard's department of Human Evolutionary Biology. She has received numerous teaching awards, and her popular Hormones and Behavior class was named one of the Harvard Crimson's “top ten tried and true.” Currently, Dr. Hooven has moved to the Psychology department where she works as an associate at Steven Pinker's lab. Her latest book is called T: The Story of Testosterone, the Hormone that Dominates and Divides Us.In this episode, I talked to Dr. Carole Hooven about the science of testosterone. Why do males have higher rates of physical violence, take on more risk, and desire more sexual partners? Dr. Hooven's research points to testosterone as the answer. Although sex differences may stem from biology, variations in behavior may be better explained by genetics interacting with culture.
