Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/791 Presented By: Pescador on the Fly, Patagonia, Mountain Waters Resort, Intrepid Camp Gear. Sponsors: Https://wetflyswing.com/sponsors On this episode, we sit down with Wesley Hodges, a decorated military veteran turned premier fly fishing and hunting guide in Virginia. Wesley shares the wild journey that led him from a cane pole in Texas to discovering fly fishing at a Boy Scout camp, to a life-changing decision made in a tiki bar in Ecuador. What followed was the creation of Virginia's first dedicated fly fishing and hunting lodge—an operation that now runs year-round across some of the most remote and productive water systems in the Eastern U.S. Right now, you'll discover why Virginia may be the "New West" for fly fishing, how to rethink your entire approach to trip planning, and the subtle techniques that make all the difference when targeting trophy Smallmouth bass. Wesley unpacks the essence of crafting full-circle outdoor experiences—one that fuses drift boats, dogs, wild trout, and grouse—all under one roof. Whether you're a seasoned angler or new to the game, this one is loaded with tactical gold. Wesley with a Smallmouth Bass Show Notes on Smallmouth Bass with Wesley Hodges 1:13 - Wesley Hodges discovered fly fishing as a teen at a Boy Scout camp, but it wasn't until after his military service that he returned to the sport. That rediscovery led him to launch Virginia's first dedicated fly fishing and hunting lodge, where he now guides guests through some of the state's wildest rivers. 5:41 - After a transformative period living in Ecuador, Wesley Hodges returned to Virginia and launched a guiding business that evolved into the state's first true fly fishing and hunting lodge. Located in Eagle Rock at the confluence of the Cowpasture and Jackson rivers, his lodge now operates year-round with a full staff, offering multi-day fishing and hunting experiences across a vast, fishable watershed. Here for more information. 9:58 - While Virginia has trout, Wesley Hodges positions the state as a true smallmouth bass destination. With fishable waters nearly year-round—from March through Thanksgiving—he emphasizes that fly fishing is a tool for all species, and smallmouth are the primary focus across his guided trips. 11:34 - Wesley explains that smallmouth bass fishing in Virginia transitions from pre-spawn in early spring to a topwater-focused season from mid-June through early October. During summer, anglers throw frog patterns and poppers all day, targeting big fish in just 1.5 feet of water, only inches from the riverbank. 14:01 - Wesley emphasizes that the biggest smallmouth are often found just inches from the riverbank, citing an old rule: “one inch from the bank equals a 20-inch fish.” Subtle depressions and undercut edges create ideal ambush spots for fish feeding on crayfish, cicadas, and frogs, making precise casting near the bank both strategic and more engaging for anglers. 15:24 - Wesley and his team primarily use Blue Ridge drift boats for guiding, having moved away from rafts due to the boats' quiet, low-impact design, ideal for shallow Virginia waters. Built from durable UHMW material, these boats slide silently over rocks—minimizing fish disturbance—and come with exceptional on-site support, making them perfect for their smallmouth operations. 21:21 - Wesley leads summer topwater floats through Virginia's river systems, favoring evening windows from 6:00 to 8:30 PM when the smallmouth bite peaks. His team utilizes highly technical rigs—customized floating lines, 10 to 13-foot leaders, and lightweight crayfish patterns—to quietly target fish in low, clear water, where precision and stealth are essential. 24:45 - Wesley's team targets calm tailouts with floating lines, casting downstream close to the bank so flies reach the fish before the boat does. In these slow waters, they dead-drift subtle poppers for up to 20 seconds, drawing in large smallmouth with minimal movement and intense visual takes. 27:19 - Wesley and his team primarily use Boogle Bugs in size 4 for topwater—favoring yellow, white, and electric blue sliders or poppers depending on fish behavior. When bass grow picky, they switch to more subtle patterns like Mr. Wiggle Legs, observing how fish react and adjusting presentations based on subtle visual cues. 33:42 - Wesley shares that his guides typically float rather than anchor, covering 4 to 12 miles depending on water levels, through remote stretches of western Virginia rivers where development is scarce. With vast tracts of farmland and surrounding public lands like George Washington and Jefferson National Forests, anglers experience a true wilderness float, often without seeing another boat all day. 36:27 - Wesley shares that anglers from around the world, including Europe and beyond, are now traveling to Virginia to fish its wild rivers and experience its remote beauty. They've trademarked the phrase “Virginia is the New West” to highlight that the state's rugged landscapes rival those out west, with strong local efforts to keep it preserved. 38:46 - In addition to fishing, Wesley's operation offers a standout upland bird hunting experience focused on wild grouse and woodcock. His team has spent over a decade scouting remote Appalachian terrain to locate thriving bird populations rarely accessed by other hunters. 40:45 - Wesley's outfitting service offers popular turkey and upland bird hunts, with seasons spanning October to March for grouse and woodcock, and April to May for turkey. His cast-and-blast packages are highly sought after, often selling out early due to his expert-guided approach and deep understanding of Virginia's diverse terrain. 42:58 - Wesley's team regularly welcomes newcomers to hunting, offering educational experiences centered around wild game and conservation. Beginners are guided through the full process—from casting or dog-assisted upland hunts to cleaning and preparing the birds—without needing to purchase any gear upfront, making it accessible and informative. 47:00 - In spring, Wesley notes that anglers enjoy prime smallmouth bass and wild trout fishing as warming waters trigger aggressive pre-spawn feeding. This season also offers the chance to mix in a day of bird hunting before preserve seasons close in mid-to-late April. 51:33 - Wesley explains that anglers with personal boats can freely access the region's smallmouth waters via public launches. However, trout fishing on the Jackson River is more complicated due to King's Grant laws—some sections legally prohibit fishing, even while floating through. Because of this, he recommends hiring a guide to avoid potential trespassing fines, which can be severe. 56:38 - Wesley shared that in summer, his essential gear includes Chaco flip flops and Patagonia's natural fiber sun hoodies for breathability and sun protection. He also highlighted the Orvis Tippe boat bag and Helios rods, noting their beginner-friendly design that makes it easy to feel the rod load for more effective casting. 60:31 - Wesley emphasized that proper casting tempo and thumb positioning are crucial for fly casting success. He advises anglers to slow down their cast and lead with the thumb on both the back and forward casts, helping maintain control and avoid excessive wrist break, which can misalign the rod and fly line. 63:00 - Wesley emphasized that smallmouth bass are almost always willing to eat, especially if anglers present a crayfish imitation, which makes up the bulk of their diet. While known for their aggression, he noted they can also become selective, often requiring smaller flies and longer leaders in shallow, clear water to entice strikes. 67:00 - Wesley shared that he's been living full-time in his 30-foot Airstream, which he keeps parked at the lodge during the season and uses to travel for bird hunting in the off-season. From a third-party perspective, his deep appreciation for the Airstream reflects his commitment to durability, mobility, and comfort. This lifestyle choice complements his work as a guide and outdoorsman. Conclusion with Wesley Hodges on Smallmouth Bass In this episode, Wesley Hodges shares expert insight into smallmouth bass behavior, fly presentation, and how subtle changes in river topography—like those shallow bankside ditches—can hold surprisingly big fish. He explains the legal complexities of Virginia's Jackson River, offers practical tips for solo anglers, and emphasizes the value of hiring a guide to avoid trouble. Wesley also reveals his must-have gear, from Chaco flip-flops to the latest Orvis rods, and explains why crayfish patterns are a reliable go-to when targeting smallmouth. From stealth casting tips to surprising shallow-water hotspots, this episode is packed with knowledge for serious anglers. What's the most surprising place you've ever hooked a big smallmouth bass? In episode 85 of For the Record with Daniel Fontaine and Paul Minhas, a number of topical issues are discussed again this week. The focus right off the top is London Street and a significant number of local residents who are choked with what city hall has planned for their neighbourhood. They've been given a couple of options to consider regarding future bike lane improvements on their street and neither seem to be catching on. It's led some residents to ask "why was there not a 'none of the above' option?" Next up is a focus on 'quiet zones'. They are quite common in the USA, but may be coming to New West if a motion is adopted next week at council. The motion speaks to how and where a 'quiet zone' could be officially designated by the city and how it may help to speed up whistle cessation efforts in the Royal City. Do you own a business in Uptown or Downtown? Do you know how much you are paying in annual fees to your local business improvement area association? The self-imposed fees are collected by the city and passed along to the BIA to pay for their annual operations. A number of business owners have asked if there can be more transparency regarding exactly how much each business owner is paying and what they are getting in return. A motion is calling for more transparency when it comes to letting business owners know exactly what they are obliged to pay each year. When is a lamp standard considered as heritage? That's what the residents of Massey Victory Heights were asking when they demanded the city put a halt to removing all their lamp standards without consulting with them first. The 50+ year old lamp standards have helped to provide the unique look of Massey Victory Heights which is filled with mid-century modern homes. A report to council next week was music to the ears of local residents when they learned the project may be temporarily shelved and the construction contract cancelled. The drug injection site near the SkyTrain station has applied for another temporary 18 month extension to their existing 3-year temporary permit. But this time, thanks to a NWP motion, the permit will only be issued if there is a Good Neighbour Agreement in place. The entire draft agreement was made public this week and it talks about something called peer-driven security and a renewed focus on keeping the area adjacent to the injection site clean and free of public disorder. But will it all work? All this and more on the podcast. If you enjoyed it, be sure to tell your friends and family to follow it on Apple Podcasts, Amazon or Spotify.

PRESS REVIEW – Friday, May 30: The papers react to Israel's new plans for settlements in the West Bank. Next, cannabis has been found in Haribo's iconic cola sour candy. Finally, a new "e-tattoo" device helps track mental workload. Israel has announced that it's expanding its settlements in the West Bank, in one of its biggest such moves in decades. The American TV channel CBS News says that the announcement has sparked global criticism. The article reminds us that the majority of the international community views settlements as illegal and as the main obstacle to resolving the Israel-Palestinian conflict. French left-wing paper Libération says that Israel is "sprinting to annex Palestinian territories". The paper writes that the new plan wants to "dismember" what's left of Palestine. The UK has also condemned the move, the British daily The Independent says. It cites Britain's Middle East minister Hamish Falconer, who wrote on X that the 22 new settlements are a "deliberate obstacle to Palestinian statehood" and that they "further imperil the two-state solution". An opinion piece in Israeli left-wing paper Haaretz writes about the West Bank's "bulletproof vest theory, calling it "not only wrong, but dangerous". The theory encapsulates the idea that settlements serve as a barrier against terror attacks. The opinion piece says that this shifts the blame from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's policies. The paper dives deep into past examples of why the theory didn't work and concludes that "[today,] the goal of the settlement enterprise isn't security but to create pretexts for the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians".We turn next to the Netherlands, where an uncommon ingredient has been found in sweets. The Dutch paper De Volkskrant reports that cannabis has been found in bags of Haribo cola candy. Several people, including children, felt dizzy and had health complaints after eating the sweets. Some 8,000 kilograms have been recalled. The British daily The Guardian adds that drug smugglers are increasingly using children's candy as a cover-up. They sometimes inject THC into the candy and make THC copies of popular brands that can be found online. Finally, researchers have found a new way to track mental workload. The Guardian reports on a new device called an e-tattoo that can be attached to a person's head. It's a "real-time mental workload decoder" that can warn people they need a rest before it's too late. The e-tattoo is lightweight and wireless, the paper explains. It is made from a thin conductive material and electrodes that detect stress. Researchers say it could be very useful for pilots and healthcare workers, for instance, where it's crucial to prevent fatal incidents caused by extreme fatigue or stress. You can catch our press review every morning on France 24 at 7:20am and 9:20am (Paris time), from Monday to Friday.

Revolutionizing Symphony Behind the Baton with Michael Christie of New West Symphony
In another 60 minute packed podcast, co-hosts Daniel Fontaine and Paul Minhas talk New West politics. First up to the bat is a discussion on the $110,000 Council committed to make permanent the Citizen Assembly. It was a pilot project that was initially heralded as an opportunity to streamline the city's engagement activities and make them more effective. While the survey says yes, a couple of NWP councillors said no. Find out why.Did you hear about the machete wielding thief who entered the Paradise Donair shop on 12th Street? He scared the living daylights out of the staff and was subsequently arrested and charge by the NWPD. Unfortunately, the judge let him out the next day and told him to 'behave'. What gives? Is this the new normal in New West?May Day has been around for 155 years. It used to receive lots of support from the School Board and City Council, but no more. While other organizations recently cobbled together get tens of thousands of tax dollars, May Day gets a fraction of that to keep the lights on. May Day Committee member Scott Rains let er rip at Council and told them the organization needs to regain its special status within the city. But were the politicians actually listening and willing to act? "Holy micromanagement Batman" said Councillor Nadine Nakagawa in response to a motion asking for more openness and transparency in city budget-making. If approved, it would have meant all projects at the city would have to have a budget and it would be readily available to the public. So why did the motion get voted down? Tolls. Levies. Congestion Pricing. You take your pick. It appears the BC NDP government is about to make driving your vehicle a lot more expensive. Have municipal politicians really convinced Victoria to give them new taxation power to help fund public transportation in Metro Vancouver? And will it really cost you $200 more per year to drive? We also do an event roundup and much, much more! If you like the podcast be sure to tell your friends and family and encourage them to follow. Episode 321: Atlanta native Kristina Murray moved to Nashville in 2014 with a fresh and original debut album and steely determination. The country singer and songwriter carved out a respected space at honky tonks like Santa's Pub and the American Legion. When hard work and critical acclaim for her two releases didn't launch her career to a new orbit, it felt like defeat. That, plus the pandemic, fueled some challenging times and emotions that inspired her new one, Little Blue, a lovely, lament-filled album on New West's Normaltown imprint. Murray is due for new waves of attention, and we talk about how hard that is to manifest in this edition of The String.

It was a busy week in civic politics in New West - which translates into another great For the Record podcast!Starting off the top the discussion focuses on the federal election and some political prognostications. This is a vintage selection from 2006The BanterThe Guys talk about Long Island wines and what the future may hold. When is a wine like a snarky adolescent? The ConversationThe Restaurant Guys have Colman Andrews, editor-in-chief of Saveur magazine, to talk about the often unsung region of Campbeltown scotch. Colman goes over the broad strokes then gets into the nitty gritty details of what makes scotch so varied and gives it a sense of place. He also gives his thoughts about the next big beverage on the horizon. Was he correct? The Inside TrackThe Guys and Colman are in agreement about the culture and traditions around food and beverage being an integral part of the enjoyment. Colman wrote, “I like the trappings of imbibing, the company it keeps, the restaurants and cafes and bars and the people who gather in them. I drink, frankly, because I like the glow, the softening of hard edges, the faint anesthesia. I like the way my mind races one zigzag step ahead of logic. I like that flash flood of the unexpected, utter joy that courses quickly through me between this glass and that one.”Mark: Did you really say that? Colman: I must have been drinking when I wrote that. -Colman Andrews on The Restaurant Guys Podcast 2006BioColman Andrews started off as a restaurant reviewer. He went on to write for lifestyle magazines, guest review for the Los Angeles Times and served as senior editor for New West magazine. In 1994, Andrews became a co-founder of Saveur magazine and later editor-in-chief. During his tenure, Andrews won six James Beard Journalism Awards, and in 2000, Saveur became the first food magazine to win the American Society of Magazine Editors' award for General Excellence. He left Saveur in 2006, becoming the restaurant columnist for Gourmet where Reichl was editor-in-chief.He has written numerous cookbooks captivating the cuisine of specific regions and cultures (Catalan, The Riviera, Ireland, Italy, etc) as well as a book about Ferran Adria.InfoSaveur magazinehttps://www.saveur.com/To get the recipe for Caipirinha, email TheGuys@RestaurantGuysPodcast.comOur Sponsors The Heldrich Hotel & Conference Centerhttps://www.theheldrich.com/ Magyar Bankhttps://www.magbank.com/ Withum Accountinghttps://www.withum.com/ Our Places Stage Left Steakhttps://www.stageleft.com/ Catherine Lombardi Restauranthttps://www.catherinelombardi.com/ Stage Left Wineshophttps://www.stageleftwineshop.com/ To hear more about food, wine and the finer things in life:https://www.instagram.com/restaurantguyspodcast/https://www.facebook.com/restaurantguysReach Out to The Guys!TheGuys@restaurantguyspodcast.com**Become a Restaurant Guys Regular and get two bonus episodes per month, bonus content and Regulars Only events.**Click Below! https://www.buzzsprout.com/2401692/subscribe

Not everyone can say that both their first and last jobs were behind the counter of a record store. But that's how things ended up for Matthew Caws, before his beloved power-pop act Nada Surf became his main gig in the mid-2000's. Shifting time between New York City and Paris growing up, he points to an eclectic list of influences (classical, disco and late 70's NYC punk) that laid the groundwork for who he'd become as a musician and songwriter. Though their sneering, tongue-in-cheek alt-rock hit "Popular" became an MTV staple throughout 1996, the band has made a deeper impact as they've aged, through genuinely hopeful takes on the human condition like "Inside of Love" or "See These Bones." Today, Matthew talks about color coding his record collection, why double-tracking vocals feels like an act of fiction, the meticulous nature of Nada Surf's album covers, and connecting the dots between Bach and Blonde Redhead. Their new album Moon Mirror -- the group's first for Nashville label New West -- drops September 13th. More details are available at nadasurf.com.
In this episode of the Aptitude Outdoors Podcast, we delve into the fascinating history of Yellowstone National Park and the numerous times it narrowly escaped being opened to private interests. Learn how Robert E. Carpenter, then superintendent of Yellowstone, attempted to push through the controversial "segregation bill," which aimed to carve out parts of the park for private development. We explore the Yellowstone Park Improvement Company's ambitions to monopolize the park's attractions, including their attempts to exploit the park's wildlife and natural resources for profit. Discover the crucial role played by conservationist George Bird Grinnell, who used Forest and Stream magazine to rally public support against the commercialization of Yellowstone. His advocacy was instrumental in thwarting these threats and ensuring the park remained a protected natural space. Additionally, we discuss Senator George Vest's efforts to pass regulations prohibiting the killing of game within the park, which helped solidify Yellowstone's status as a wildlife sanctuary. Join us as we uncover the untold stories of how Yellowstone National Park was saved from privatization and how the early conservation movement shaped the future of America's public lands. This episode is a must-listen for anyone passionate about environmental conservation, history, and the ongoing fight to protect our natural heritage.
