Imagine growing up on a cattle ranch in small-town Wyoming and feeling like you are literally the only queer in town, or for hundreds of miles for that fact. No imagine you are creative, artistic, and want to be a music person, but you can't let the real music out of the bag you want write to express yourself because that would "out" you. Welcome to Alisia Kraft's world. She joins us today to showcase her cool queer self and to share her story from cattle ranch to music stages. About Alysia Having amassed devoted regional followings for projects Whippoorwill and The Patti Fiasco as an award-winning songwriter and incomparably magnetic frontperson, Alysia Kraft has sold out most of Colorado's big stages and directly supported icons Bon Jovi, Blondie, Nathanial Rateliff and Bonnie Raitt on significantly bigger ones. Embracing the complexities of growing up queer on a cattle ranch in small-town Wyoming and choosing to love within a landscape that didn't always love back, First Light is a triumphant homecoming and a defining solo debut. Kraft was signed to Louisville-based sonaBLAST records (Jack Harlow, Grlwood) in January 2022 and won Best Original Song at the Los Angeles International Independent Film Festival for Cold Mountain in February of 2022. Atwood magazine called the second single, Little River “a classic in the making… A driving outpouring of tension released through emotionally charged vocal lines brimming with heartfelt poetry.” With First Light dropping everywhere June 17, Kraft's smart, retro-influenced indie pop and lush, bioluminescent folk will find crossover appeal with fans of HAIM, Sheryl Crow, Kacey Musgraves, and Waxahatchee. Enlisting close collaborator J. Tom Hnatow & Grammy-nominated Justin Craig to produce and mix and acclaimed engineer, Sarah Register to master, First Light is vastly open-hearted and thoughtfully hook-adorned and feels destined to put the-most-vibrant-yet version of Alysia Kraft onto a much larger map. Karen Ledford plays drums for the painstakingly persistent punk pop band GRLwood. With her unique visual aesthetic and multifaceted approach to drumming, she has made her self known locally and nationally as a musical force to be reckoned with. Having grown up in Elizabethtown, she slowly migrated from small town to small town, finally settling in Louisville to study philosophy. Ultimately, though, she discovered music to be her true calling. She sat down with JC to talk about being queer in a small town high school, applying for the Navy, playing constantly, the worst movie ever made, and more... This episode is sponsored by sonaBLAST!
