What has always been known in the U.S. as the Hot 100 had existed for nearly fifteen years as numerous charts, tracking and ranking the most popular singles of the day in several areas. During the 1940s and 1950s, popular singles were ranked on three significant charts: • Best Sellers in Stores • Most Played by Jockeys • Most Played in Jukeboxes On June 17, 1957, Billboard discontinued the Most Played in Jukeboxes chart, as the popularity of jukeboxes waned and radio stations incorporated more and more rock-oriented music into their playlists. The week ending July 28, 1958 was the final publication of the Most Played By Jockeys. On August 4, 1958, Billboard premiered one main all-genre singles chart: the Hot 100. The Hot 100 quickly became the industry standard and Billboard discontinued the Best Sellers In Stores chart on October 13, 1958. The Billboard Hot 100 is still the standard by which a song's popularity is measured in the United States. Bad Idea Comics is the new kid on the block. They put out a very successful ashcan for "Hero Trade" last year. Only approved Bad Idea Comic stores received the Hero Trade ashcan. Those issues quickly went for big money in online auction sites. ENIAC #1 is their first series. The last few pages of ENIAC #1 have a small snippet of a story from the Hero Trade universe. I believe they will be putting short stories from Hero Trade in the back of all their upcoming books. ENIAC is the what if story of the first computer built taking over all the world's governments. All the countries know about ENIAC, but the general populace is unaware. They have been plotting how to take ENIAC out ever since it's inception during WWII, but ENIAC has always been several steps ahead of them. Overall, this was a good first issue. They built the basis of the ENIAC universe. By the end of issue #1 you know about ENIAC and that the world governments are attempting to take back control. The only character we really get any background from is ENIAC. I am looking forward to learn about the characters on the other side (world governments). This first issue reminds me of War Games mixed up with SkyNet (Terminator). There is a lot of potential for this story if they don't follow the same old tropes that we've seen in every other war computer takes over the world movies. Matt Kindt is a great writer and I am enjoying the Doug Braithwaite artwork. I hope issue #2 doesn't get delayed! In 2019, Dr. Aysha (i-sha) Khoury (koo-ree) was recruited to become founding faculty at Kaiser Permanente Bernard J Tyson School of Medicine. She developed case-based curricula, implementing flipped classroom and active learning pedagogies. She served as a small group facilitator and Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity Champion and Workgroup member. On August 28, 2020, within hours of engaging her small group in a critical discussion on bias and racism in medicine, she was targeted, suspended, and ultimately terminated without transparency or due process. We begin the interview by discussing her termination, what she felt led to it, although with the lack of transparency, she still hasn’t been informed. We use this as a jumping off point to discuss allyship, or in her situation, lack thereof. We then move on to why there is medical mistrust among minoritized communities, including a discussion on why we now use words like minoritized and enslaved. We finish with a discussion on how to address SARS-Co-V-2 vaccine hesitancy in the setting of justifiable medical mistrust. Her argument is that there is less hesitancy in the older population, so if we address the inequities in vaccination access, the older population will be able to influence the hesitations of the younger population. Dr. Khoury grew up in Atlanta, GA and completed her medical degree there at Morehouse School of Medicine. After completing an internal medicine residency and working as a primary care physician, she returned to Morehouse School of Medicine to complete training in public health and preventive medicine and earned a Master of Public Health.  After this, Dr. Khoury returned to the Southeastern Permanenete Medical Group and pioneered a new role there as a Clinical Decision Unit Internist. This encompassed work in quality management, process improvement, and evaluation of treatment outcomes. Committed to education and advocacy early in her career, she served as an adjunct clinical assistant professor and Admissions Committee Member at Morehouse School of Medicine, where she was later inducted in the White Coat Society for demonstrating compassionate care and community service.

Seeking guidance, he spoke with Joseph, who received yet another revelation. Known today as Doctrine and Covenants 19, the revelation admonished Martin, “Thou shalt not covet thine own property, but impart it freely to the printing of the book of Mormon.” On August 25, 1829, he mortgaged his property to Grandin as payment for the publication. His neighbors were amazed that their sensible friend would “abandon the cultivation of one of the best farms in the neighborhood” to underwrite the publication.

On August 2nd 1990, the Iraqi military invaded Kuwait City overnight, and its residents woke up to a city under occupation. The only airport was put on lockdown, and the Iraqi military set up checkpoints on the city’s streets. The US, UK and Russia condemned the invasion, and some British and American citizens were taken as hostages. But the Indian government had no stake in the conflict, and around 165,000 Indian citizens living in Kuwait were caught up in a situation that didn’t involve their country. Which left the Indian government with a question they'd never had to face before: how do we evacuate tens of thousands of our citizens from a foreign country, all at once? By Davy Crockett 1978 was a year when new road 100-milers started to spring up across America, put on by independent race directors.  Most of these races were available for the non-elite long-distance runners to give the epic distance a try. These 100-milers were held in Hawaii, California, New Jersey, Maryland, Missouri. One race in particular was established that would eventually become a national championship event: the 100-miler at Flushing Meadows in Queens, New York. Going forward 100-mile or 24-hour races would be held at this venue into the 1990s. World and American records would be set on the grounds normally used by thousands of park visitors. Unisphere 100 Flushing Meadows Park was created in 1939 for the New York World’s Fair and was also the venue for the 1964 World’s Fair. The races’ namesake, the  Unisphere, a massive spherical steel representation of the Earth, was created as part of the 1964 World’s Fair. It is 140 feet high and 120 feet in diameter and weighs 700,000 pounds. The rings around it represent the tracks of the first men to orbit the earth, celebrating the beginning of the space age.   The course for the 1978 100-mile race was a flat 2.27-mile loop around Meadow Lake. The race included a strong field and was an invitational race where participants needed to have previous ultramarathon experience. Twenty-two qualified runners participated although few had ever run the 100-mile distance before. Five of these runners deserve to be highlighted. Park Barner Park Barner (1944-), “The Human Metronome,” was a computer programmer from Pennsylvania. He was the pre-race favorite for the Unisphere 100. Barner had served in the Army and was stationed in Germany during the late 1960s. While there, he watched a movie that inspired him to start running and set a goal to run a marathon. At the 1971 Boston Marathon, he met ultrarunning legend Ted Corbitt (1919-2017) and asked him, “How do you run 100 miles?” Corbitt’s reply was, “You just have to tell yourself to keep going.” Barner at the age of 27, in 1971, started running ultra-distance races and quickly became the greatest American ultrarunner of the 1970s. In 1976 he gained fame by running 300 km on the C&O Towpath in Maryland, in 36:48:34. During that run he reached 100 miles in 16:14:10. On August 16, 1975, Barner ran his first formal 100-mile race. It was held on a quarter-mile track at New York’s Queensboro Community College, put on by the New York Road Runners. There were only seven starters and all but Barner dropped out along the way. He reached 50 miles in 6:32 but without any competition, he faded the second half. He won with a time of 13:40:59 for a lifetime best. By 1978, Barner had finished 41 races of 50 miles or longer and won 19 of them. Barner’s 41 finishes was incredible for a time when relatively few ultras were being held. For more about Barner, see episode 51. Nick Marshall Nick Marshall (1948-) was from Camp Hill, Pennsylvania. He was an athlete in high school on the track team and the statistician for the basketball team. In his yearbook he was quoted, “I don’t want to be an engineer, I’d rather be President.” Marshall started running marathons in 1973. He realized that the longer the race, the better he could compete. He said, “I was motivated by a simple curiosity over a basic question: How far can you go?” He set his marathon best of 2:41:15 in 1975 at the Harrisburg Marathon. Marshall’s introduction to ultras came in 1974, at the C&O Canal 100K on a point-to-point course from Washington D.C. to Harpers Ferry. He finished in second place to Park Barner and was then hooked on ultras. By 1977, Marshall was one of only a handful of runners ...

Lester was particularly interested in elephants and he caught the eye of a 27 year old animal trainer named Walter J Hammil. Hammil offered him a ride on an elephant after hours and this would be the last time anyone saw Lester alive.

On August 8th 1988 the Burmese military cracked down on anti-government demonstrators, killing hundreds possibly thousands of people. In the weeks of protest that followed, Aung San Suu Kyi rose to prominence as an opposition figure. The date 8.8.88 has come to symbolise the resistance movement in Myanmar at the time. Ma Thida was a medical student working at Rangoon General Hospital when the dead and injured began to arrive. This week's guest is Sarah Copland. Sarah is a UN Officer working on women's rights and gender equality. On August 4th 2020, Sarah was living and working in Beirut and preparing for the arrival of her second child. Tragically, she and her family were caught in the vast explosion that caused devastation across Beirut, and Sarah’s young son Isaac was killed. Trying to understand her grief, Sarah started writing a blog, and in the process her words have resonated with others experiencing loss.  “Writing helps me organize my thoughts because it's, it's a mess up here. There's just so much going on in my head and it helps others relate to me, I think which in turn helps me because I found in these past few months, I've shut down a lot. And it's through writing that I'm able to connect again. Because once if people can read how I feel, then that sort of opens up a door to be able to connect and talk.”

Surviving in a Post-Christian America Message Three – To Obey or Not Obey On January 20th, our country went through a change of leadership. President Biden became our 46th president of the United States. I watched a good deal of the Inauguration. Lady Gaga did a fabulous job singing the National Anthem. Recently I heard Amanda Gorman, our Youth Poet Laureate, recite one of her poems; so I was interested to hear her read her new poem The Hill We Climb. I sang along with Garth Brooks as he performed Amazing Grace. And as I listened to President Biden’s speech, I shared his hope for unity. Every 4-8 years we go through this. We welcome a new government into power. The republic created 243 years ago still stands. So now what? What do we as Christians do with respect to this new government? Do we honor and respect President Biden and Vice President Harris or do we stand against them?  Do we subject ourselves to these leaders for the next four years or do we rebel? Two weeks back you learned that your first responsibility toward your leaders is to pray for them and to thank God for them. But do we have to obey them? Must we follow in lockstep wherever they lead? Today you will learn the answer to the question – must I obey... You will learn that .... God commands us to obey our government as long as our obedience is not in conflict with God. When we do choose to obey God rather than man we must be willing to accept the consequences. Subjection Romans 13:1-2 Believers are to be subject to their governing authorities because God has appointed these leaders. Look at Romans 13:1-2 Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves. Why does the Word tell us to subject ourselves to our political leaders? The reason we are to subject ourselves to our governing authorities is that God has appointed them. God raises leaders up and God removes them. If the Scripture is telling the truth, (and we know it is) then God just appointed President Biden and God just removed President Trump. And we are to subject ourselves to that change. Remember, Paul is writing the book of Romans at the time Nero is Emperor. As I discussed two weeks back, Nero was one of the most perverse leaders of all time. Yet Paul told the readers of Romans that they were to subject themselves to this leader. Several questions come to mind. What about: Hitler who executed 4-6 million Jews (2/3 of all European Jews) Stalin who killed approximately 20 million Soviet citizens Chairman Mao killed as many as 45 million Chinese citizens Or what about the United States, who has aborted 62 million babies since Roe v Wade. What is a believer’s responsibility to a government like that? Must a Christian obey their leaders when their leaders sanction murder? Three Things to Think About Does the Bible and especially Romans 13 teach the “Divine Right of Kings”? The DRK is “the doctrine that kings derive their authority from God, not from their subjects.” The DRK teaches that human rulers are beyond reproach or criticism by his or her subjects. Rebellion would be the worst of political crimes. So is this biblical? No – Romans and elsewhere in Scripture teach that we are subject in general but not in absolute. Remember that Nathan called out King David’s sin in 2 Samuel 12:7 Jeremiah stood against Ahab in 1 Kings 18 Remember Daniel in the lions’ den? John the Baptist confronted Herod and religious leaders with their sin. There is another important teaching in the Scripture that destroys the idea of the Divine Right of Kings. What is it? All men are created equal. All are sinners. Romans 3:23 (All men are created equal.) All are guilty and those without Christ will be held accountable for their sins. So does the Bible teach that we must obey our leaders because they are without reproach? The answer is no. Christians are citizens of two kingdoms. You are a citizen of the country in which you live. And you are a citizen of heaven. Phil 3:20 and Col 1:13 Why is this important? Because you are to subject yourself to your leaders as long as there is no conflict with God’s laws. Look at Acts 5:17-32 What does that story teach? It teaches when man’s laws are in conflict with God’s laws then we must choose to obey God. Another example is found in Daniel 3:13-18. What does that story teach? It teaches that when we choose to obey God and not man we must be willing to accept the consequences. Here is another example. Who is Kim Davis? Kim Davis was the former county clerk in Rowan County Kentucky who refused to sign marriage licenses for same-sex couples. Shortly after the US Supreme Court made same-sex marriages legal, same-sex couples began to come to the Rowan County Courthouse for a license to marry. Kim Davis was the county clerk. Her name was on every marriage license and above her name was a line for her signature. She said, "I never imagined a day like this would come, where I would be asked to violate a central teaching of Scripture and of Jesus Himself regarding marriage. To issue a marriage license which conflicts with God's definition of marriage, with my name affixed to the certificate, would violate my conscience." Because of her refusal, she was jailed and sued. Eventually, she returned to her post after they removed her name from the signature block. Her assistant clerks signed from then on. She refused. Ultimately she was voted out of office. All in all, this worked out as it can. The government made same-sex marriage legal. Kim Davis, a representative of that government, chose to obey God rather than man and to suffer the consequences. She used her Frist Amendment rights to do so. The First Amendment says: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. When we are faced with a decision to obey the government or obey God we should always choose “Obey God.” But we should do so in the way that fits the issue and with an understanding that we must be willing to suffer the consequences. Kim Davis did not set off any bombs. She did not try to violently overthrow the government. She exercised her constitutional rights to resist a law that was in conflict with the Bible. The people of Rowan County Kentucky also exercised their rights and in due time voted her out of office. So must we obey our leaders in all matters? The answer is no when the laws of man are in opposition to the laws of God. But we must be willing to suffer the consequences. One final question then we will conclude.  What about our founding fathers and the American Revolution, was that a violation of Romans 13 because they did rebel against the sitting government? Pastor John MacArthur Jr. says that “the American Revolution was born out of a violation of Romans 13:1-7.” Let’s look at that. On August 2, 1776, 56 members of the 2nd Constitutional Congress signed the Declaration of Independence. These men too struggled with the teaching of Romans 13. But they also considered the entire Bible. The Declaration of Independence is a document that explains why they felt justified to break with England. When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation. It rejects the Divine Right of Kings because it states this: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness The signers believed that the King of England and the government he represented was no longer a government worthy of subjection. Such has been the patient sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government. The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world. They then wrote down 28 ways the King had violated them and the law. Finally, they appealed to God that they would establish a new country that would be worthy of God-ordained subjection. We, therefore, the Representatives of the United States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States The final sentence of the declaration calls upon one another and upon God’s providence. And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor. When we stand and obey God rather than man we can only depend upon God and one another. Conclusion So are we subject to our leaders?  Yes, we are. Why? Because God has appointed them. God appointed President Biden and God removed President Trump. Must we obey them in all matters?  No. Why? There is no Divine Right of Kings. And we are citizens of two kingdoms. When man’s kingdom disagrees with God’s we must choose God’s and suffer the consequences. Let’s pray.

While the foodservice and hospitality industry is home to a diverse workforce, barriers to equality continue to exist in restaurants and hotels alike. On August 11, 2020 KML in partnership with Easton’s Group of Hotels, assembled a group of industry leaders to discuss what the industry needs to do in order to dismantle those barriers to ensure discrimination is eradicated, true equality is achieved and that everyone is treated with the respect they deserve. Last week, five months after that webinar, we once again assembled a panel of leaders culled from that first roundtable to determine what kind of progress has been made on this front, to examine the initiatives being introduced by various leading hospitality companies to ensure a discrimination-free environment and to introduce goals and directives for the industry so that it can become home to a diverse and inclusive workforce that is welcoming and hospitable to all.

On August 9th, 1986, actor and director Lawrence Dobkin was part of a SPERDVAC ( www.sperdvac.com ) panel along with Don Diamond and Lilian Buyeff to discuss their lives and careers. During the course of the conversation, Dobkin spoke about working for Cecil B. DeMille shortly after AFRA lifted DeMille's membership card. In 1944 DeMille was at odds with the American Federation of Radio Actors because of a ballot proposal called Proposition 12. It threatened unions by making California a “right to work” state. If passed it would have allowed any non-union member to work in radio at a reduced scale. AFRA chose to take one dollar from every Union member to fight the bill. DeMille was sympathetic to union ideals, he just disagreed with being forced to donate to the cause. The argument dragged through late 1944. Eventually, the courts ruled against DeMille and he left the show on January 22, 1945.

As 2020 (finally) draws to a close, we want to take a look back at what happened this year, and what we've learned for the future.  Alex Cabot starts with a look back at a volatile 2020 in the markets.After a strong performance in 2019 and a few minor bumps in January, the stock market was doing well throughout the first few weeks of February.S&P 500 hit a new high on Feb 19th…COVID was a minor concern, but investors weren’t too nervous about it yet.Toward the end of February, all hell broke loose in the markets.According to data from FactSet, from February 19th to the end of the month, the S&P 500 lost nearly 13% in one of the quickest “corrections” I’ve seen (7 trading days).The next week was choppy, but the S&P 500 gained back 0.6% with an average daily % fluctuation of over 3%.Monday the 9th of March brought further turmoil to the markets when OPEC started an oil-price war with Russia.  That week saw the S&P 500 enter “bear market” territory (a drop of 20% or more from most recent high)…the quickest “bear market drop” we’ve seen.When the dust settled on March 23rd, the S&P 500 had lost just over 1/3rd of its value in 23 trading days.The average daily % move in the S&P 500 during this period was 4.2%...over 5 times more than the long-term average.Businesses were temporarily closed, millions of people lost their jobs, kids (and parents) had to adapt to “virtual” learning…it was gloomy.On March 24th, in response to the high likelihood of a stimulus bill making its way through Congress, the markets rebounded, with the S&P 500 gaining almost 10% in a day.  By the end of that week, the market was now only off 23.7% from its most recent high.Volatility stuck around for a while, but investors were slightly more optimistic. April, May, June, July, and August all resulted in solid gains.  On August 18th, 6 months after the previous peak, the S&P 500 (almost unbelievably) hit a new high.Markets bounced up and down in September and October, but closed November strong and as of December 8th, are over 9% higher than their February peak.What can we learn from all of this?In the short-term, markets are unpredictableBailing out at the wrong time can be a real problemMoney always has to flow somewhereWhen rates are low, equities are more attractive…and when rates are really low, there’s not much of an alternative for intermediate to long-term investors.If you had told us on January 1st what was going to happen this year…not in the market, just in the world…and then asked me to predict where the S&P 500 would be in December: let’s just say we would have been way off. No matter what our emotions tell us, we need to recognize that a well-developed financial plan takes years like 2020 into account when determining the strategy.  Those who had a plan in place and stuck with it this year most likely profited from staying the course.  And looking back at every tumultuous period I’ve seen in my career, that truth is evident. In the second half of today's episode, Ed Lambert looks at what we've learned about ourselves and society in general this year.-Fair to say that we have all been affected emotionally by this pandemic.   Since early in the year, we’ve all had to live with uncertainty that we’re not used to.Shutdown orders (almost 3 months in PA)Kids out of school for the spring/ some remote and hybrid nowAbnormal feeling of not leaving your house for extended periodsRemote WorkingBusiness owners (like us) have had to learn how to lead and manage people you aren’t with all dayMany people spent their first Thanksgiving without visiting family.   Many more will do the same for the end of year holidays.We’ve also learned that we are all very resilient.  Whenever there is a crisis, we learn that we can handle more than we think.   We’ve all adapted our schedules and habits.Businesses have learned to adapt to survive (and sometimes thrive).   Some have pivoted their business models in ways that have created record profits.Shopping has shifted in a way such that many more people shop exclusively online now.The trend was already underway, but the pandemic accelerated thatSanta is a big fan of Amazon.Business technologies like Zoom have allowed people to stay connected and created amazing new capabilities for businesses.In our own business, almost all client meetings since March (including on-boarding of new clients) have been remote using Raymond James’ Zoom technologyModern Science is absolutely remarkableTwo vaccines FDA approved(hopefully) less than 1 year from discovery of this virusFastest vaccine development in history up until this point- Mumps took 4 years in late 1960’sHistorically, mass vaccination happens well after the pandemic and helps to wipe out remaining clustersThis time, we hope that vaccines may actually shut down a pandemic while it is in full effect.We’ve all seen that healthcare workers and truly essential workers are true heroes. They’ve kept millions of people alive while putting themselves in harm’s way.
