A podcast interviewing ‘the wiser generation’ about their interesting, unexpected, and funny life stories.
This week I am on vacation so I decided to bring you a special episode, courtesy of Allison Sheridan our guest from episode 14 who let me use audio from her Chit Chat Across the Pond podcast episode 463. Instead of interviewing a guest, this week's episode is a reenactment of a letter written by Allison's father while he was caught in a Typhoon off the island of Okinawa in japan during World War II. This was September 16th 1945 and he was a Chief Engineer aboard an amphibious ship there. For more details about this story, photos, and the transcript of the letter see Allison's original blogpost https://www.podfeet.com/blog/2016/11/ccatp-463-typhoon/ Enjoy! Maggie was born in the Bronx to a rough childhood. She fled to LA to learn to act and find herself, which she started through yoga and meditation. We talked about how you become invisible as an older woman, and why its so hard to let go of toxic people. Maggie says when you give someone advice, you're the one who needs to hear it, and she does just that! We end with a great tale about meeting a surprise shaman, but you'll just have to listen to find out what exactly a cybercherry is! This month we get to talk to Allison Sheridan, a former engineer turned techie and podcaster extraordinaire. She tells us about growing up spending her vacations on a sailboat, and how excited she got when the first computer arrived at her job. She has been hooked on tech ever since; in fact Allison was among the first podcasters and loves to teach people about tech to this day! She tells us tales of an eclipse chasing cruise, and the time she met Rod Roddenberry who is a fan of her show. We also discuss the feeling of being a grandparent, which gives me something new to look forward to. Slip on your 3D glasses and enjoy this month's episode of SYGNT! Scott is our youngest guest ever, but that doesn't make him any less qualified to share his great stories. Founder of Frogpants studios and cartoonist extraordinaire, Scott talks about how his love for technology started with a Japanese boombox, and how he was the coolest kid on the block thanks to his dad's arcade. We discuss how different kinds of tech have evolved over time, why it's important to stay at the forefront of innovation, and how that has impacted the way he raised his kids. Although he started out in corporate graphics design, Scott took the leap to go solo and founded his own podcasting network, where he now harbors some of the kindest fans on the internet. We also get some of that hard-hitting advice only grandparents know how to dish out. This episode is a gem! Pigeons, pigeons, PIGEONS! Welcome to 2021! Hopefully, the wackiness of this episode will be enough to distract you from current events. Mother Pigeon is a NYC performance artist who can often be found at Union Square feeding live pigeons and selling felt ones. She has been called “a beautiful witch”, to which I wholeheartedly agree. Mother Pigeon may not be a granny per se, but she definitely radiates strong granny energy, and that’s enough for me (plus it’s my podcast and I do what I want
In this tumultuous holiday season, who better to interview than my own grandma! This episode sort of serves as a part two to episode 2 where I interviewed my grandpa, so you might want to listen to that first. Oma Marjolaine was born in a truck in the Netherlands during WWII. She hitchhiked her way to the South of France at 18 and never turned back! When she joined a hippie commune she had to learn how to grow her own vegetables, mill grain, raise sheep, tan hides, make cheese, spin yarn, and everything in between. She even had to send telegrams back in the day when she didn’t have a phone on her farm. Basically, she was homesteading before it was cool. We talk about her travels around the world, her friendship with the late Diana Ross, and visiting America for the first time. Pick the coziest bale of hay in the barn and gather round for this joyous episode of SYGNT that might just convince you to go live on a farm in the mountains... which honestly doesn’t sound half bad right now. SYGNT is six months old, YAY! This month, Dr. Angie Benham (formerly Angie Evans) tells the story of and helping fight for integration as a junior at Van Buren High School in 1958. This was just a year after the “Little Rock Nine” had to be escorted to school by federal troops thanks to Brown vs. the Board of Education supreme court ruling. We discuss the parallels with today’s Black Lives Matter movement and how we hope for change. We also get into her life as a missionary on the Navajo reservation, her career as a psychologist (she is still working at 77!) and the psychology of God and our parents. Angie tells us about how the best moment of her life happened only recently, and as always, provides us with great advice. This is certainly a worthy sixth anniversary episode folks, enjoy! We talk about going to war in the jungles of Papua New Guinea and how it led to his love for navigation. Then we discover how spilled onions can ruin your university career. A multitude of sailing stories cumulate with my favorite one, when my grandpa met Clint Eastwood and Janet, my unofficial grandma, made him “the world’s best apple pie”. Of course we conclude with Cees’ wise advice for a younger generation. Stay home and enjoy! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
