Learn more about your ad choices. Twelve years ago, few outside Latin America knew of Nayib Bukele, then the young mayor of a small town outside San Salvador. Today, the media-savvy Bukele proudly calls himself the "world's coolest dictator" as president of El Salvador. He and his Nuevas Ideas (New Ideas) party control all the levers of power. His regime has a horrendous human rights record, exemplified by the massive CECOT prison that has room to incarcerate 40,000 people. In April, Bukele was warmly welcomed into the Oval Office by President Trump, who lavishly praised the Latin American autocrat because of, not despite, his dictatorial excesses. In this episode, historian Gema Kloppe-Santamaria explains Bukele's meteoric political rise in a country once ravaged by civil war and gang violence. Gema Kloppe-Santamaria is a sociologist and historian specializing in violence and crime, focusing on Central America and Mexico. She is a Lecturer in Sociology at University College Cork and an Associate Research Professor of Latin American History at George Washington University.

The Hidden History of Texas Looking for Gold and Glory – Before I get too far into it today, how about subscribing to the podcast. Tell your friends that you've found the coolest place on the net to learn about Texas history. Well maybe not the coolest, but a pretty cool place, thanks I'd appreciate it. As I've discussed in the past, the Spanish presence in the Americas was pretty much an accident. Until Columbus bumped into the islands of Guanahani (Watling Island in the Bahamas) which Columbus named "San Salvador", Cuba, and Hispaniola (present-day Haiti and the Dominican Republic). They had no idea anything or anyone was between them and Asia, remember they were looking for a shortcut route to India. Even then it wasn't until 1519 when Alonso Álvarez de Pineda mapped the Gulf Coast for the first time that they began to realize they had stumbled upon something far different than what they originally thought. So, what intrigued the Spanish so much about this new continent they encountered? I've talked about how in 1528 Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca, explored the Gulf Coast and his exploration fell apart. He got shipwrecked and he and some of his crew wandered across present-day Texas and northern Mexico. During their journeys and capture they heard stories from the people about cities or places that were “wealthy”. Now we don't know exactly what the indigenous people meant by wealth or how they described the various locations, but de Vaca's later telling of those encounters sparked an interest in what the Spanish called or were labeled the "Seven Cities of Gold" or “the Seven Cities of Cibola” But why? Why would these stories matter to the Spanish? In the early 8th century Muslims had conquered what is now Spain and Portugal. The story goes that in 714 seven Catholic bishops and their faithful followers fled across the Atlantic to a land known as Antilia, the name of which, incidentally, was the source of the name Antilles, which was initially applied to the West Indian islands of the Caribbean. The story was that when they fled, they took with them vast amounts of wealth, especially in gold and silver and each of the bishops had established a city. The story, or fable, was that those 7 cities were to be found in this ‘new' country. However, the Antillean islands failed to produce large quantities of gold and silver, but by 1539 the lands that Cabeza de Vaca and his companions reported on were thought to contain an El Dorado (or The Gold) known as Cíbola. In that year, Viceroy Antonio de Mendoza dispatched Fray Marcos de Niza and the African Estevanico to search the area. This exploration cost the life of Estevanico at Háwikuh, the southernmost of the Zuñi pueblos in western New Mexico. On his return to New Spain (today's Mexico), Fray Marcos reported that he had seen golden cities, the smallest of which was larger than Mexico City. Today we know that the good frier exaggerated what he saw, why I have no idea, but he definitely didn't see any golden cities and certainly not one larger than Mexico City would have been at that time. In 1539, Mexico City, then known as Tenochtitlan, was a large and populous city. Estimates for its population ranged from 200,000 to 400,000, so as I said, the good frier was a, as we say, a teller of tall tales. However, in 1540 a follow-up expedition of Francisco Vázquez de Coronado captured Háwikuh and learned the true nature of it as well as other nearby pueblos. In the following year, disappointed over the failure to find the Seven Cities of Cíbola Coronado launched a futile search for Quivira-(another legendary wealthy city) an undertaking that crossed the Panhandle. His toute took him from Arizona to New Mexico into Texas up to Oklahoma, and finally Kansas. It was there that he did find Quivira, it was situated in what is now central Kansas, now nobody is really certain of its exact location, and most think it was near present-day Lyons or Salina. What did he find?

Maru Molina lives in El Salvador, living somewhat of a nomadic lifestyle. She has a weekly pop-up event called Cocina de Jardin, where the events are held in both wild and urban settings around the country. Maru's work on the project over the past five years is very impactful. I believe it is having an impact. She has been holding weekly events that connect consumers with healthy, nutritious food grown by local producers, often right on the farms. They are physically seeing, tasting understanding where their food comes from. She recently expanded the concept with Finca Sylvestris, an experimental farm on the slopes between two volcanoes, just outside of San Salvador. Aside of giving her new altitude ingredients to work with, she also has a formal space for Cocina de Jardín events, which occur there twice a month. It's given her an entire new understanding of her work.It is a very pivotal moment in the history of El Salvador. Even though there are serious concerns in the way the government has behaved itself, the country has opened up wildly and people are genuinely optimistic. I saw it the last time I was there I saw it. I felt it. It was as if a heavy burden had been lifted. As Maru and I discuss, this moment is an opportunity to build something better and lasting because it might not come again. --Host: Nicholas Gill ( https://www.instagram.com/nicholasgill2 ) Co-host: Juliana Duque ( https://www.instagram.com/juliduk/)Produced by Nicholas Gill & Juliana DuqueRecording & Editing by New Worlder https://www.newworlder.comEmail: thenewworlder@gmail.comRead more at New Worlder: https://www.newworlder.com

On doit bien mieux à nos enfants ». The Rich Zeoli Show- Hour 1: 3:05pm- While speaking with the press from the Oval Office alongside President Donald Trump on Monday, El Salvador President Nayib Bukele revealed that he has no plans to return Kilmar Abrego Garcia who was deported to El Salvador after the Trump Administration determined he was in the U.S. illegally and a member of the gang MS-13. In a recent ruling, the Supreme Court determined that Abrego Garcia's deportation was, in part, the result of an “administrative error” and that the Trump Administration should “facilitate” his return to the United States. Though, after the error is corrected, Abrego Garcia would ultimately be eligible for deportation anyway. While speaking with the press, Homeland Security Advisor Stephen Miller denied an administrative error ever occurred. The Trump Administration also noted that because Abrego Garcia is a citizen of El Salvador, they have no recourse if Bukele denies their request for release. 3:10pm- In posts to social media, Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) documented his trip to San Salvador, El Salvador where he hoped to negotiate the release of Kilmar Abrego Garcia. During an interview with Fox News, Attorney General Pam Bondi emphasized that Abrego Garcia is not a “Maryland man” as the “liberal media” continues to insist. She continued: “He's a guy from El Salvador who is a part of one of the most violent gangs in our country.” 3:30pm- Zeoli Show action figures, Matt gets yelled at for misreading a text message, and Rich promotes his numerous appearances on television. 3:40pm- On Tuesday night during the opening day of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, former President Joe Biden delivered his first public speech since leaving office. During the address, Biden used outdated phrases, screamed at attendees, and was drowned out by background music—so, it went about as well as we expected. 3:50pm- According to The New York Post, Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) Director William Pulte has sent a federal criminal referral to the Department Justice—accusing New York Attorney General Letitia James of mortgage fraud. Ironically, in the past, James has notably stated: “no one is above the law.” Weekday afternoons on Talk Radio 1210 WPHT, Rich Zeoli gives the expert analysis and humorous take that we need in this crazy political climate. Morin called out Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) for failing to reach out to her family but finding time to rail against the Trump Administration for deporting dangerous migrants who entered the country unlawfully. Leavitt revealed that the wife of Kilmar Abrego Garcia sought a restraining order against him in 2021, citing domestic abuse. "I'm here at the airport. I'm about to board my flight for San Salvador. The goal of this mission is to let the Trump administration, to let the government of El Salvador know we are gonna keep fighting. What bullies do is they begin by picking on the most vulnerable. But if we get rid of the rule of law and due process in the United States, it's a short road from there to tyranny." That message came from Sen. Chris Van Hollen moments before boarding his flight to El Salvador this morning. He's traveling to demand the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland resident currently detained in a Salvadoran prison. Meanwhile, two House Democrats — Reps. Robert Garcia and Maxwell Frost — are requesting an official congressional delegation (or CODEL) to visit the prison where Trump's deportees are being held. But here's the catch: a Republican committee chair has to sign off. Without it, lawmakers can go informally, but they lose access to security protections and oversight power. Bill Kristol joined Tim Saturday in Arizona to rip the atrocious behavior of our government—depriving even lawful Venezuelan migrants of due process, and shipping them off to a mega-prison in San Salvador where they may be being tortured. Full Text of ReadingsMonday of the Third Week of Lent Lectionary: 237The Saint of the day is Saint Oscar Arnulfo RomeroSaint Oscar Romero's Story The night before he was murdered while celebrating Mass, Archbishop Oscar Romero of San Salvador said on the radio: “I would like to appeal in a special way to the men of the army, and in particular to the troops of the National Guard, the police, and the garrisons. Brothers, you belong to our own people. You kill your own brother peasants; and in the face of an order to kill that is given by a man, the law of God that says ‘Do not kill!' should prevail. “No soldier is obliged to obey an order counter to the law of God. No one has to comply with an immoral law. It is the time now that you recover your conscience and obey its dictates rather than the command of sin. . . . Therefore, in the name of God, and in the name of this long-suffering people, whose laments rise to heaven every day more tumultuous, I beseech you, I beg you, I command you! In the name of God: ‘Cease the repression!'” Simultaneously, Romero had eloquently upheld the gospel and effectively signed his own death warrant. When he was appointed archbishop of San Salvador in 1977, Bishop Romero was considered a very “safe” choice. He had served as auxiliary bishop there for four years before his three years as bishop of Santiago de Maria. hbspt.cta.load(465210, '513a1c02-2ac3-4332-82b8-f4b809487bc1', {"useNewLoader":"true","region":"na1"}); Oscar's father wanted him to be a carpenter—a trade for which he demonstrated some talent. Seminary classes in El Salvador preceded his studies at Rome's Gregorian University and his ordination in 1942. After earning a doctorate in ascetical theology, he returned home and became a parish priest and later rector of an interdiocesan seminary. Three weeks after his appointment as archbishop, Romero was shaken by the murder of his good friend Jesuit Father Rutilio Grande, a vigorous defender of the rights of the poor. Five more priests were assassinated in the Archdiocese of San Salvador during Romero's years as its shepherd. When a military junta seized control of the national government in 1979, Archbishop Romero publicly criticized the US government for backing the junta. His weekly radio sermons, broadcast throughout the country, were regarded by many as the most trustworthy source of news available. Romero's funeral was celebrated in the plaza outside the cathedral and drew an estimated 250,000 mourners. His tomb in the cathedral crypt soon drew thousands of visitors each year. On February 3, 2015, Pope Francis authorized a decree recognizing Oscar Romero as a martyr for the faith. His beatification took place in San Salvador on May 23, 2015, and he was canonized on October 14, 2018. Reflection Oscar Romero and many other Latin American martyrs for the faith were falsely accused of advocating a Marxist-inspired “theology of liberation.” Following Jesus always requires choices. Romero's fiercest critics conveniently dismissed his choices as politically inspired. An incarnational faith must be expressed publicly. Click here for more on Saint Oscar Romero! Monsignor Óscar Romero was the archbishop of San Salvador. They called him la voz de la sin voz, The voice of the voiceless. He spoke out against the government repression, violence and killings in the late 1970s El Salvador. It cost him his life. He was killed on March 24, 1980, while at the altar while delivering mass. In 2018, Pope Francis declared him a saint. His legacy lives on.This is the tenth episode of Stories of Resistance — a new podcast co-produced by The Real News and Global Exchange.
