Join us in this episode with Jan Blair, a registered homeopath and coach, as we explore the challenges and solutions surrounding Irlen syndrome, a visual processing condition that significantly impacts learning and reading abilities. Jan shares her personal story, including how a chance discovery of Irlen syndrome helped her son overcome his reading struggles. We delve into the visual distortions associated with the condition, such as words blurring or moving, and how these issues often go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. Jan also discusses the use of colored overlays and lenses as effective tools for managing Irlen syndrome, along with the potential role of homeopathic remedies in supporting those affected. Episode Highlights: 03:03 - Jan's Journey into Homeopathy 05:03 - A Mother's Realization 14:52 - Understanding Irlen Syndrome 18:03 - Symptoms and Misdiagnosis 25:36 - How Irlen Affects Everyday Activities 34:05 - Exploring Homeopathic Remedies for Erlen Syndrome 36:09 - Personal Stories and Experiences 38:55 - The Impact of Erlen Lenses on Sensory Processing 46:19 - Identifying Symptoms and Red Flags 50:19 - Practical Tips and Remedies for Managing Erlen Syndrome 57:31 - Creative and Musical Abilities in Irlen Patients About my Guest: Jeanette "Jan" Blair is a second-generation homeopath, coach, supervisor, remedial massage therapist, NLP practitioner, and Irlen assessor. Growing up with a homeopath mother, Jan was immersed in holistic healing from a young age, though she initially pursued a degree in languages and a career in the computer industry. It wasn't until she found herself naturally advising clients on remedies like Arnica that her passion for homeopathy was reignited. At 28, she returned to university to study homeopathy, eventually building a successful practice. Her personal journey with Irlen Syndrome began when her son struggled with reading and was diagnosed with visual processing issues. Now, with nearly 20 years of experience in homeopathy, Jan helps children and adults overcome challenges like Irlen Syndrome and continues to inspire others with her deep commitment to holistic well-being. Welcome the Driven Female Entrepreneurs Podcast! The weekly show that helps you dream bigger and achieve more in your business, by learning what works from successful female entrepreneurs. In this episode In this episode of the Driven Female Entrepreneur Podcast, I speak with Matthew Pollard, founder and CEO of Rapid Growth, LLC. Matthew's earlier years starkly contrast his present charismatic persona. Battling reading challenges, introversion, and career uncertainty, an Irlen syndrome diagnosis hindered his conventional reading abilities. Rather than surrendering, it spurred him to seek alternative learning methods. Facing unemployment during a challenging period, Matthew delved into unconventional job opportunities, venturing into commission-based sales. Despite initial rejection and the harsh realities of the field, he persevered. Enduring closed doors, rejections, and navigating sales without formal guidance, he remained resolute. Now, Matthew is a beacon of hope for introverts in the realm of sales, networking, leadership, entrepreneurship, and public speaking. His personal journey, marked by relentless dedication to mastering sales, has transformed into a mission to help others navigate similar challenges. He understands the unique struggles introverts face and aims to dismantle the misconception that success in fields like sales and networking is reserved only for extroverts. Don't miss this episode to learn about Matthew's journey—an inspiring tale of overcoming limits and redefining success. His story emphasises that success isn't bound by personality or talent; it's about embracing strengths, forging unique paths, and persistently striving for greatness. "I realised dreaming alone won't cut it. You've got to be willing to put in the work. Remember Henry Ford's words: 'If you think you can or if you think you can't, you're right.'" - Matthew Pollard Highlights In this value-packed episode you'll learn: The importance of prioritising a structured business system over the hustle mentality. Why assembling sales tactics can cause chaos and how simplicity beats complexity. How focusing on your natural gifts is more effective than fixating on acquired knowledge or certifications. Why introverts possess innate strengths that can revolutionise sales approaches. A manageable way to transform networking by shifting to a passionate, mission-driven approach. "Introverts have an edge in sales when they use their analytical nature to improve systematically, stepping away from personal rejections." - Matthew Pollard About Matthew Matthew Pollard is an internationally-recognised consultant, speaker, blogger, author, mentor, coach, and serial entrepreneur with five multi-million dollar business success stories under his belt, all before the age of 30. He is the founder and CEO of Rapid Growth, LLC, dedicated to achieving maximum ROI for businesses of all sizes. This week on The Red Light Report we are going to gain a novel perspective on light and learn just how much it can affect our perceptual processing. Known by many names, including Irlen Syndrome, visual stress, and scotopic sensitivity, the symptoms that can be helped with color are wide-ranging and appear in many different populations, including those with migraines, brain injury, concussion, ADHD, autism, and learning difficulties. Interestingly and luckily, this debilitating condition can be quickly and effectively reversed by colored overlays and spectral lenses. I was able to sit down with Terry Carlson, a seasoned Irlens diagnostician, to take a deep dive into Irlen Syndrome and how she goes about diagnosing and treating this condition with the science of color! Backed by over 40 years of research, Irlen is the pioneer and global leader in spectral filter color lens technology. This innovative, breakthrough solution has helped millions of adults and children around the world. With hundreds of certified providers in 46 countries around the world, Irlen is the original creator of colored lens treatment for light-based, visual processing difficulties. The Irlen Method has earned millions of fans by providing a long-term, expertly-developed solution for reading problems, headaches, migraines, light sensitivity, ADD and ADHD, autism, and many other light-based difficulties–by directly addressing a core problem: the brain's inability to process visual information and specific wavelengths of light. This is a very interesting conversation and will make you see light through a new lens and, perhaps, the signs and symptoms may be similar to what you are currently experiencing. Be sure to look into Irlen Syndrome via the links below and share this information with any family members/friends that may be dealing with. I've been giving a lot of thought to what is commonly believed to be the process we adults need to go through if we suspect ADHD. That process takes time and money. And depending on what part of the world you live in, your access to a specialist may be limited. For that reason or others, many adults are self-diagnosing these days. Some are questioning what having an official diagnosis will give them that a self-diagnosis won't. The answer to that question is simple – potentially a lot of valuable information beyond just ADHD since by the time you are an adult, ADHD typically doesn't occur by itself. There could be depression, anxiety, codependency, addictions, learning differences or challenges, Irlen syndrome, underdeveloped executive function skills, sensory challenges and more. Medication may be appropriate for some of these additional conditions as well as for ADHD if the main ADHD challenges are inattention, hyperactivity and/or impulsivity. If the main challenges are executive function skill challenges due to underdevelopment, I haven't seen medication alone be the answer without EF skill training. I have worked with many adults over the years who haven't sought an official diagnosis because they knew that their executive function skills were lacking development for various reasons, and they knew they could do something about that without waiting for a diagnosis... In this special edition of The Inner Edge, I interview a remarkable woman who made an incredible discovery over 40 years ago. This discovery has the power to radically improve the lives of about 25% of the population. That means it could be you, or someone close to you. What she discovered is now called Irlen Syndrome. My daughter Jane was diagnosed with Irlen when she was 12 and it has transformed her life in many ways. The purpose of this interview is to help increase the awareness of Irlen Syndrome everywhere because there are children and adults in your life who need to become aware of this. It is the dyslexia of our time, it's real and there is a proven way of helping people. If you have any specific questions for me please email me directly at shane@shanecradock.com Show Notes: Helen Irlen Bio - here Irlen Website here Irlen Screeners and Diagnosticians: As Helen explains in our conversation, there are 2 key steps 1. Getting screened for Irlen and then 2. Getting a definite diagnosis on the colour. In our experience, there are many great people who can help with the screening and you can connect with them through the main Irlen website and if you're Irish through this website, www.irlen.ie Important: Our experience on the Diagnosis has been that the results will vary hugely depending on the equipment the diagnostician uses and the way the tests are done, because this will determine the exact colour of the Irlen spectral tints. The best person we have found for this stage is Alan Penn, who is based in the UK. He showed us the MASSIVE difference in getting the colour 90% right and 100% right for Jane. Rebecca Petris started The Dry Eye Company and this website in 2005 as a dry eye information portal and community center for her fellow dry eye patients. Since then, it's grown and expanded in various ways, all focused on improving quality of life for people with dry eye. The Irlen Method is the only research-based method using colored overlays and filters. There are over 4,000 educators in school districts who have been trained, and millions of children use Irlen colored overlays and it is now being used in over 42 countries. The Irlen Method is non-invasive technology that uses colored overlays and filters to improve the brain's ability to process visual information. It is the only method scientifically proven to successfully correct the processing problems associated with Irlen Syndrome.

Do you struggle with reading or math? Do you lose your place easily when working? Is reading sheet music ridiculously hard? Well, it might not be your eyes OR your ADHD, mama. It might be something called Irlen Syndrome. Not only does it tend to go along with ADHD (& autism!), it can lead to misdiagnosis. Irlen Syndrome, also called Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome, is a perceptual processing disorder, not a vision problem. For those of us who have it, it can lead to some funky vision impairment and: - Extreme light sensitivity - Wanting/needing to read in dim light - Seeing waves or “rivers” in between the lines of text as we read - Poor depth perception - Bad coordination issues & clumsiness - Low self-esteem or motivation …and more. However, even if you get this diagnosis, there's good news: There are things that can help! Tune in to this week's episode of Motherhood in ADHD to find out more about this condition and learn what you can do to counter these tough symptoms, including what symptoms to look for in children.

Episode 81: All About Dyslexia With Guest Lizzie Shearing Today, we discuss all things dyslexia. Guest Lizzie Shearing discusses that dyslexia is a reading learning disability. Individuals process written words differently in their brain, such that they rely on the left frontal lobe, rather than more on the left posterior areas of their brain. They show inefficient patterns of brain activity. Dyslexia occurs in 1 in 10 people. Symptoms include difficulty with reading, reluctance to read out loud or to read at all, reading being slow, reading fluency being slow, reduced awareness of patterns of words, spelling difficulty, and difficulty remembering words (working memory and phonological memory). Symptoms parents can look out for include difficulty following multistep directions, poor working memory, a delayed ability to read, misreading words, guessing words and rushing through, spelling difficulty, event sequencing difficulty, labored reading, and choosing not to read. Educational psychologists and dyslexia specialists can make the diagnosis. It cannot be a pediatrician who diagnoses. To make the diagnosis, they assess working memory, handwriting, reading fluency, spelling, and IQ. They also need to rule out visual difficulties, including Irlen syndrome, as well as hearing impairments. The earlier a child is diagnosed, the better things are for them, including emotionally. The earlier a child enters treatment for dyslexia and the more treatment they get, the better the outcome. Treatments include going back to the beginning and making sure the child has grasped and mastered all the skills that they have been previously taught, a cumulative structured phonics program, filling in all the gaps, inference learning, trying to visualize scenes, and support with reading fluency. If children don’t get treatment, they tend to experience anxiety. Regarding school, accommodations can be helpful, including differentiated teaching across lessons, list of spelling for key vocabulary, writing frame provided for the student, use of voice to text, use of bullet points rather than writing essays, extra time on tests, prompting, and rest breaks. Other helpful tools are quizlet/flashcards. Tech accommodations include immersive readers and dictation. To help their kids, parents can encourage reading in any form, use audiobooks and read along with it, obtain specialist support for your child, make sure the specialist has a good relationship with your child, use google books, and use audiobooks from the library. To emotionally support children with dyslexia, help your child develop a growth mindset, help promote resilience, and help your child find a hobby they love. In this week's highly informative episode, Brigitte interviews Carol Stock Kranowitz who is an author of a groundbreaking book The Out-of-Sync Child about Sensory Processing Disorder. They discuss what Sensory Processing Disorder is, how it affects children in different ways, and which therapies can help them manage their sensory issues. Carol, a former teacher, introduced Sensory Processing Disorder to parents and educators around the world through her “Sync” series books. Carol speaks internationally about SPD's effect on learning and behavior and how families, teachers, and professionals can offer “In-Sync” experiences to support children and adolescents — at home, at school, and out and about. She shares her unexpected journey of becoming an expert on SPD while she was working as a movement teacher at her sons’ preschool and observing kids who seemed to be "out of sync." She worked closely with the occupational therapist who came to give a workshop at the school and started organizing the information she received to help herself and her colleagues about sensory issues, which she later turned into her first book The Out-of-Sync Child. Carol breaks down the 8 sensory systems and tells us how sensory processing issues can affect children in many different ways. She shares with us some examples of over-responsivity, under-responsivity, sensory craving, and the combination of all. She says that there are more than 29 million ways people can exhibit sensory processing disorder. She talks about the therapies parents should look into to help their kids manage their sensory issues as well as activities they can do at home. Finally, Carol offers parents the most important thing to remember about SPD. Lois is 70 but has been in the health care industry since she was 12 years old! She first volunteered as a kid, then went to nursing school despite her severe dyslexia, and went on to became top of her field. At 50 years old she discovered her true passion, which is teaching people how to get rid of shame and guilt. We go through how tap-dancing helped her conquer Irlen syndrome (thanks Fred Astaire), paying 25 cents for a black and white movie, her near-death experience, and how now, she decided to go on tour and make a movie at 70 years old. Today we’re looking at how jacked up my brain is — and how I'm going to fix it. A few weeks ago, I traveled to the Amen Clinic in Orange County to work with Dr. Daniel Amen, one of America’s leading psychiatrists and brain health experts. My visit started with a SPECT scan of my brain, which is an imaging test used to get 3D images of internal organs. Then, we sat down for this interview to talk about my results and what I can do to improve my brain health, as well as what everyone should be doing to maintain cognitive health. I was actually a little shocked and disappointed to learn that my brain has some fairly serious issues with brain flow. But if I’m going to get that news from anyone, at least it was one of the world’s foremost experts, who was able to provide some clear and concise directions for reversing the damage. If you normally listen to the podcast, you might want to watch the video for this episode. We recorded the whole thing, and you’ll very literally get to take a peek inside of my head. 11:55 — What is a SPECT scan? Cybersecurity needs more professionals working in the field, and guest Nicole Bushong from Houston shares why. She explains critical issues today in digital crime, cyberwarfare, hacking, public safety, and diversity of the tech workforce. She also explains key aspects of her own path toward this field, including navigating being a woman in the still male-majority field of cybersecurity, her work in a women's tech organization at The University of Houston, and getting educated while having dyslexia. Although Irlen Syndrome is a common condition, it’s rarely properly diagnosed. In the final episode of a series on Irlen Syndrome, Dr. Daniel Amen and Tana Amen are joined by Helen Irlen for a final in-depth discussion on the process of diagnosing and treating Irlen Syndrome.
People who suffer from Irlen Syndrome have trouble processing certain visual stimuli, particularly words and numbers. The surprising method of treatment involves the wearing of a special pair of tinted glasses. In the third episode of a series on Irlen Syndrome with Helen Irwin, Dr. Daniel Amen and Tana Amen discuss how these lenses can change the way your brain processes information and change your life.
If you experience headaches and irritability while reading, or if certain light patterns tend to affect you negatively, you may suffer from the oft-misdiagnosed Irlen Syndrome. Luckily, there are effective methods to treat it. In the second episode of a series on Irlen Syndrome with Helen Irlen, she describes its symptoms, causes, and how it can be remedied.
While helping kids with learning disabilities, Helen Irlen struggled to identify the reason why neuropsychological testing wasn’t helping to find answers in so many cases. When she finally decided to think outside the box, the result was a revelation. In this episode of The Brain Warrior’s Way Podcast, Dr. Daniel Amen and Tana Amen are joined by Helen Irlen as she recounts the discovery of her namesake syndrome.
In the third episode of a series on brain injuries, Dr. Daniel Amen and Tana Amen discuss Irlen Syndrome, a condition often caused by brain trauma. Daniel and Tana describe the symptoms of Irlen Syndrome, as well as discuss how treatment options can help you get your life back.
Epidemics of parechovirus are concerning doctors, especially because of the harm the virus can cause children. There's no vaccine, so how do we tackle it? She’s the founder of the Irlen Method, which emphasizes the importance of color in everyday function for many people. Through years of research, she has discovered that colored glasses or filters can make an incredible difference in how people’s brains function. Fortunately, Helen has been generous with sharing her research and knowledge. There are close to two hundred affiliated Irlen centers worldwide in 45 countries. In addition, Helen has written several books, including most notably The Irlen Revolution: A Guide to Changing Your Perception and Your Life. Connect With Helen: Irlen.comThe Irlen Institute @SeeIrlen on Twitter The Mission Log: [05:12] - Helen talks about herself and her mission in the world. To give us some insight into who she is, she tells us a few stories about her life. [08:43] - Why was Helen interested in the psych ward, and what was the driving force that motivated her to pursue her research? [11:29] - Helen goes into more detail about what the Irlen Syndrome is. She also describes the experience of working one-on-one with adults. [17:06] - How do you become a good listener? Helen says to avoid imposing your own issues on someone else, so you’re a blank slate and can really hear what people are saying. [18:51] - The Irlen Syndrome is a visual processing deficit that you can inherit or acquire (or both). It leads to difficulties in areas such as reading, academic skills, attention and concentration, depth perception, and more. [19:34] - The symptoms of Irlen Syndrome can vary, Helen explains. She also talks about the percents of people who have the syndrome. We hear about how flourescent light can be an issue for many people. [23:36] - Orion volunteers to be Helen’s guinea pig, which allows listeners to hear several minutes of Helen’s questioning process for beginning to assess whether someone might have Irlen Syndrome. [28:15] - Helen describes the issues that can be triggered for certain people by sunlight, bright lights, fluorescent lights, and so on. [29:50] - How does Helen help the people who come to her? She suggests starting with the tests on her website. [32:20] - Helen talks about what colored filters and lenses can do to help our brains. [34:01] - We hear about how Helen’s research and methods can help people who have been in the military with various problems and symptoms. She also discusses its uses for people on the autism spectrum, as well as high-functioning professional adults who want peak performance. [39:21] - Helen speaks emotionally about the impact that her method has had on veterans and marines. [42:07] - Helen offers two funny stories of the effects that Irlen filters have had on users. [43:18] - You can inherit Irlen Syndrome, which doesn’t always show up in childhood and may present in college or later. [47:02] - What would Helen like her legacy to be? In her answer, she explains why she isn’t interested in retiring: because she can’t think of anything more rewarding than what she’s already doing every day. [50:29] - Helen shares her three top tips for living a stellar life: 1. Understand that your brain is uniquely different from anyone else’s brain. 2. Don’t buy into what other people have said to you about yourself. 3. Give yourself a hug everyday and tell yourself how wonderful you are. Your Pre-Flight Checklist: Practice becoming a better listener. Do your best to set your own issues and thoughts aside to become a blank slate and listen to what the person you’re talking to is actually saying. Think about how you feel after you’ve been focused on reading for a while. If you experience physical symptoms, you may fall on the Irlen Syndrome continuum. Take the “Long Self-Test for Irlen Syndrome.” This test will help you determine whether you’re one of the many people unknowingly suffering from Irlen Syndrome. Keeping physically active is a great foundation in aging well. Let's take a look at how Ed Elliott discovered that playing softball can not only keep you young, but can also help you meet and make a lot of friends. You can listen to the show at http://rockyourretirement.libsyn.com/playing-softball-to-keep-young-episode-005 Today I spoke with Ed Elliott, who wanted to be a singing cowboy when he grew up, changed his mind to become a “cementing cowboy”, and then became a teacher. He is now retired and is playing softball to keep young. Ed retired from teaching severely handicapped children and then became a principal, hearing officer, and director of Special Education Programs. He worked in the industry after 40 years. He and I have something in common as I worked for Harborview Developmental Center in Valdez Alaska right after high school, which was an institution for severely mentally disabled adults. Harborview has since closed, and there are no more institutions such as that in the United States. He planned for retiring when he was sixty-two until he went to a faculty meeting and found out that he should look carefully at the retirement chart and not to forget that he could retire at age sixty-one and a half, so he didn't wait. Ed retired without a plan, except he needed to wrap up some loose ends, which he is still in the process of doing (aren't we all!). Ed is Rocking his Retirement by playing softball to keep young. He found the softball league in the newspaper. He and a friend scoped it out first to make sure that there were no former star baseball players in the league! It seemed fine, so they went to a batting cage to assess their skills. They could both still hit a ball (after fifty years) so decided to purchase the equipment needed to play the game. The average age of the players (which includes women) in his league is seventy-one. The majority of the team-mates who are playing softball to stay young are from sixty-five to seventy-five years old, but they do have some fifty-five and fifty-six-year-old players who are the stars of the game. Most of the young ones are still working in their business. They even have a player who is ninety! Ed said that the main benefit of joining the league, in addition to the health benefits, is the advantage of spending time with friends every week. He also gets to find out about new activities when members invite each other to activities that they might not have known about. They are all playing softball on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and so they know where they are going to be on those two days. Otherwise, they might not know what day it is! Another way Ed Rocks his Retirement is by volunteering to spend time doing things for others, such as walking his wife's dogs, spending time with grandchildren, and generally helping people who are still working. Ed can now do what he wants to do. That's not all that Ed does. He's considering becoming an Ombudsman for people who live in Senior Communities. He also is trained in a type of dyslexia called Irlen syndrome, which is a reading problem (words swimming, words curling up, etc.,) that can be easily remedied by using colored transparencies. He is considering helping others who have this syndrome, which is so easy to correct. Listen to Ed's story on today's episode of Rock Your Retirement. Topic - Irlen Syndrome. Does Jack see “rivers” on the paper created by the spaces between the words when he reads? Do the words float off the page? Does he have trouble reading under fluorescent light or get headaches when he reads? Does he read slowly, skip words and lines? Is it hard for him to read for long periods of time? Jack may not need glasses. These and other conditions can be symptoms of Irlen Syndrome. Irlen Syndrome is not a vision problem but is the brain's difficulty with processing visual information. It's relieved by using colored filters or colored lenses to reduce perceptual distortions. Nearly half of people with reading problems, dyslexia and learning disabilities have Irlen Syndrome although they may also have other difficulties. Want to learn more to help Jack. Take a self-test at www.Irlen.com and explore the kinds of visual distortions that Irlen Syndrome causes. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/drclaudia/message
Irlen Syndrome (also referred to at times as Meares-Irlen Syndrome, Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome, and Visual Stress) is a problem with the brain's ability to process visual information. This problem tends to run in families and is not currently identified by other standardized educational or medical tests. This largely unknown and undiagnosed disorder affects approximately 15% of the general population, 50% of individuals with reading and learning difficulties, 30% of individuals with ADHD and autism, and a significant portion of individuals with brain injury, chronic headaches, and migraines. SIgns of Irlen Syndrome include light sensitivity (bright lights, sunlight, fluorescent lights); headaches or migraines; difficulty or discomfort when reading or doing other visually intensive activities; eye strain; or the print or environment looks different than it should.
