Two sisters discussing topics they find interesting, rooted in the knowledge that Andrea knows everything.
In this episode, Andrea continues on the topic of Feminism - this time second wave. Not to be upstaged, Kayse has a few anecdotes from her personal files. The TL;DR is that we made some progress but it's ok if you think things kind of suck.
Today on the pod and in honor of Women's History Month, Andrea is going to do a wee lecture on Women's Identity, Rights and Issues from one of her classes! As you may remember, she is a professor who focuses on women in politics. Let's take a look back in US history on how the founding fathers worded who was a citizen, who decided women couldn't vote and why it's not a great idea to lock women and children into buildings. This is part 1 of 2, we hope you enjoy! Note: the stated episode number is incorrect as we had to rearrange to accommodate a guests schedule.
Ok so, this is actually a really old episode. We recorded it last year before we went on our sister trip to Scotland than time ran away from us. It's what we were currently reading and MAN have we really gone wild in the SJM universe since then!
Alright, let's try this again! We came back last year, excited to get back into your ears but life had other plans for us. This episode catches you up on what we had going on and lets you know what we have planned next. We also have an exciting guest upcoming in our first 3 on the 3s of Season 3!
Because we are still a hotmess! Hi, listeners! Long time, no... hear. We have had a crazy few months (as we detail in this episode). We are working on getting ourselves sorted out and coming back to you on our regular times. Thanks for bearing with us. Updated 4/14/23 with corrected audio.
It's time for another 3 on the 3's! This time it's actually a 4 on the 3's but you get it. We interviewed our cousins Austin and Alex to get their take sibling relationships, the monumental life moments that can shape that and what it's like to have a big family. They're pretty impressive dudes in their own right so we hope you enjoy getting to know them and hearing some of their stories!
Good day listeners! In this episode, we talk about some weird, quirky habits that we have. In a move counter to what we normally do, we'll actually throw some facts at you as we researched the category that some of our habits actually fall into. Thanks for tuning in and as always, we'd love to hear from you - send us topics you'd like to hear about or your own habits!
It's here! The third and final episode of our ancestry series. In this episode, we talk with our cousin Liz about the stories and memories from our mom's side. There is one story in particular that we think you'll find as eerie as we do! We will probably do a follow up on that if you're interested! Thanks for following along on this journey with us - genealogy is one of our favorite subjects and we'd love to hear your thoughts either on the series or on any interesting stories you have to share.
Today we continue our ancestry series PLUS a three on the threes with our cousin Linda! She has been doing genealogy research for years and has lots of great tidbits to share. We hope you enjoy!
Something Andrea and I really love to do is dig into our family history, make up stories about long dead relatives and ask old men in overalls to help us solve family mysteries. Ok, that last one only happened once. There's a lot packed into this episode! Several stories about our oft crazy family and also some important lessons we've learned: 1. Kayse can find you on the internet 2. Label your photos 3. Talk to the old people We hope you enjoy this first installment in a three part series on this topic. Weigh in, have you done genealogy research? Do you enjoy it or do you just not care at all?
Today, we are talking about self-care and burnout and some of the things we do to embrace self-care and prevent burnout - all with varying levels of consistency and success. Covid has changed our outlook on the time we need for downtime and time to recharge. If any of this rings true for you, hit us up and let us know what you do for self-care!
It's the first Three on the Three's of Season 2! With us today, we have our friend Chris whom, you might remember, had the original idea that Andrea and I should podcast! Chris has been sending holidays and long weekends with us, going to wedding and funerals, running races, being Andrea's plus one and so much more. He delves into the hinterland of his psyche, shares some of his favorite memories with us but also keeps it real by making sure that we know... he's capable of being unimpressed. Thanks for tuning in!
Reading is hands down one of our favorite things to do. After we finish something good, we always feel the need to spread the word to each other and beyond. So, you'd think that book clubs would be our jam - turns out they are very much not. In today's episode, we talk about some of our favorite books and our book club experiences. Tell us if you'd had any similar to ours!
Listeners!! We are back for Season two of TNWATM!! We're so excited for this season, we have lots of ideas teed up but obviously welcome your suggestions as well. All throughout season one, our mom (Kalita) had corrections, factoids and general thoughts/feelings about the episodes. It always cracked us up as she described herself yelling into the car when she could remember what we forgot. SO, we asked her to go back and relisten to ALL our episodes and write down her corrections and, y'all, she actually did it. A mother's love, amiright? Unfortunately, Kayse had some internet issues during this episode so you won't hear much from her but we hope you enjoy this walk through memory lane of last years episodes that are largely us walking through memory lane of our lives. Dropping the "E" on this episode because we do say a few bad words! Sorrrryyyyy. *Episode updated with audio correction.
It's a wrap on Season 1, folks!! Thank you so much for coming with us on this journey! We're excited to share the final Three on the Three's on Season One with you - an interview with Andrea's friend Tracy - and wrapping up our brief New Year series. We talk running, races, exercise and because we are us, a little bit about dogs. See you next season!
Unpopular opinion: I hate the movie Forest Gump but as a runner person, I love this quote. You were warned that we were continuing our New Year, Who Dis theme, so this week's episode is about our family's general interest in exercise, our experience as "runners" and the other physical activities we like or have done. If you want tips, advice or just our general opinions on most types of exercise - you should enjoy this episode! Thanks for listening! This is the second to last episode of Season 1 of TNWATM! Make sure you send in your episode requests to tnwatmpod@gmail.com or message us on IG (tnwatm_podcast). We have the beginning of Season 2 lined out but if your idea is good enough (no pressure), we will rearrange our order!
We're halfway through January - usually by now people have ditched their resolutions (if you made one in the first place) and we're back to our usual shenanigans. Hopefully though, if you're looking for a new job or a new career, you haven't thrown that dream out yet. Today, we reminisce about our old jobs and talk a bit about the corporate America job market (from Kayse's perspective) and the academia job market (from Andrea's perspective). If you're on the hunt for a new job, hopefully it makes you feel a bit less alone - we see you, it is tough out there! If you're a happy camper in your job - yay you! Thanks for tuning in and we hope you enjoy!
To officially wrap up the holiday season, we're talking about some non-holiday traditions on this installment of 3 on the 3's. Our guest is our grandmother, Audrey (our dad's mom), as the arbiter of many of these traditions. If you're a Houstonian you may get some ideas on things to do downtown and maybe you'll even want to create your own culture weekend! As usual, Kayse remembers basically nothing but luckily Andrea has some recollections from our childhoods. Thanks for tuning in!
We have a short and sweet bonus episode for you today. We decided to tell a few stories about our grandpa, Carroll/Papa, who inspired the name of our podcast. We recorded on his birthday but we weren't quick enough to get it out that day! We hope you enjoy the episode and apologies for Kayse's terrible audio quality!
Happy Holidays, dear listeners! We absolutely love this time of year. I (Kayse) love decorating my house, wrapping presents, the cooler weather. I just love it all. Today's episode isn't just about how much we/I love the Holidays though. We're actually talking about our family's holiday traditions. If you just dozed off, I promise it'll be more interesting that than. Between the two sides of our family, we have one that adheres rigidly to tradition while the other takes a more laissez-faire approach to the Holidays. Those powers combined have given us a funny take on what the Yuletide generally looks like. As always, thanks for listening! We're glad you're here.
In today's episode, our task was to talk about our embarrassing music phases... However, we're just really not embarrassed by them. We've fully embraced our broad spectrum musical interests. While we may not listen to all the things we did in our youth, there isn't much we wouldn't own up to - even my death metal phase (cut my life into pieces, amiright?!). What are your thoughts? Does exposure to lots of music as a kid make you like all kinds of music or is it we're wired for all or just one?
When you take a trip are you the kind of person who has to hurry up and see all the things or the person who leisurely goes about their business to absorb the experience? In today's installment of Three on the Threes, we interview our grandmother (Mimi aka Kathleen) and our great aunt Iva Nell. Starting in the early 90s (or thereabouts, no one knows), they drove throughout the southern US exploring, experiencing and taking in the sites. We just hit on the highlights but one day Andrea and I will have to get the full scoop!
In this weeks episode, we revisit trips we've taken around the US. Starting at a pretty young age, we got to do some pretty amazing trips with both sides of our family. Andrea loved skiing in Colorado, Kayse loved summering in Maine (twice). We both love going to wine country in California. We fully recognize how lucky we were to get to take these trips and have family that prioritized family vacations. If you love to travel or are thinking of your next destination when the world opens back up - we hope you'll enjoy hearing about some of the places we've been (and also some that we still want to go to!).
We had planned to do an episode like this anyone and Halloween time seems an appropriate time to release it! SpOoKy SeAsOn! As Andrea would say. We look back on the ghost stories that we heard as kids (first hand accounts), the weird things that have happened to us over the years but we end on a good comedic note. If you have spooky stories, write as at tnwatmpod@gmail.com or comment on our IG stories and we'll do a special listener story episode!
Welcome to the 4th installment of three on the threes! Today we interview Toby, one Kayse's best and nerdiest friends. We find out a little bit about Toby, what it takes to hang with the Eckelman sisters and go off on a life stage tangent. There's also a brief interruption of tiny people (and lots of background noise!) - babies are loud. Lastly, if you ever wondered how Andrea feels when you think she's my mom, you will find out! Thanks for tuning in.
In this weeks episode, we talk about how we have not only become very uncool (and don't really care) but some of the specific things that started to happen as we became "Get off my lawn" people. We kick off by telling a few stories on ourselves of what our parents did that mortified us, followed by a brief recounting of an actual list we created of "things I can't stand as an older person". There are several tangents thrown in. A little bit of wisdom. But mostly just silliness. Thanks for listening! PS - you can change lanes in the intersection!
Full disclosure. If you get annoyed when we laugh a lot or crack ourselves up - this episode may not be for you. If you think we're as hilarious as we think we think are - then I think you'll really enjoy this short episode. This is a listener requested topic (remember you can email us or IG us your requests!) about nicknames. Our nicknames for each other, for other people and a brief history of how nicknames in our family are a bit of a tradition. We cover all the ones we can remember - suffered a brief interruption by one annoying husband who can't remember what day we record - got back on track and tell all the stories. Raise your hand if Andrea tried to introduce herself to you under a false name! Thanks for listening. It means the world to us.
It's the third installment of Three on the Threes! Today, we're interviewing our travel buddy and honorary sister, Dawn Poirer! Andrea absolutely cannot say her last name but we promise she's a dear friend! We met Dawn while we were hiking in Peru to Machu Picchu so we thought this would be a fun carry on episode to our international travel episode (episode 8), especially because Dawn is a very adventurous traveler while we're a bit more on the reserved side (did I mention how much I like museums?).
Today we're talking about the international travel we've been lucky enough to do throughout our lives. In planning this episode, we didn't think we remembered a lot of things - especially from when we were wee ones - but the fun memories started flowing after we got started and there was so much more we could have talked about! If you too have worn a money belt and nonchalantly pulled your money out of your shirt or pants, you'll enjoy some of the nonsense in this episode. Thanks for listening!
This one is a doosey. We briefly cover our checkered dating histories (going wayyyy back) before launching into online dating stories which will have to be entered into the tomes of history under the heading "Everyone said it was the dating of the future, but often it was unspeakably terrible." The good news is Andrea never went into the woods at night. Thanks for listening! Remember to send your topics to tnwatmpod@gmail.com!
It's another 3 on the 3's! Today we interview our dad, Keith. He's one of the hardest working, handiest and - dare we say - funniest people we know. We've learned a lot from him over the years and on this episode he will share some of that wisdom with us all. If you learn nothing else here today, just remember, kids: don't start up a weed eater in your closet. Thanks for listening!
Today we have our first listener requested topic! Thanks to our aunt Sandi for sending in the request for us to discuss the impacts of technology on kids, on adults, in the classroom and on our lives in general! It was fun for us to walk down memory lane of our technology use - you'll definitely want to hear about Andrea and her floppy disks circa 2004. If the title is confusing to you after reading this description, tune in and I promise it will make sense. Actually, I promise nothing. Disclaimer: we are not experts in this field, merely offering our viewpoints and experiences! We hope you enjoy listening.
In today's episode we clarify (for anyone in doubt) that we are in fact different people. A way that this becomes particularly pronounced is when you look at our friends and friend groups. We look at our personality types and then break down some of our biggest differences. Thanks for tuning in!
On this episode of TNWATM, we're implementing our new flow called Three on the Threes where we interview someone every 3rd episode. To kick off this new segment, we interviewed our mom - Kalita! We give you a very brief rundown of what we were like growing up and then pepper her with questions while also managing to make her tell us how awesome we both are.
We decided to go with one of our favorite topics for Episode 2, dogs! We have some funny stories and general wisdom coming at you. Thanks for tuning in!
Let us introduce ourselves and tell you about how and why we created TNWATM! We're Andrea and Kayse, two sisters who just want to give you a glimpse into our world and why you should only trust the things that Andrea tells you!
