Today we live in a cynical world. It's pervasive, this debilitating disbelief in our institutions, our once assured tenets of groundedness. Now we doubt, not only what we see, but what we hear, and even our own thoughts. Are they indeed our own? Or, have they been shaped by the unrelenting marketers and influencers? Back in the 80's - even earlier back in the 60's the attitudes of boredom and mistrust seemed exclusively the province of old school Europe, in particular the French, who invented the perfect word for it: Ennui. The great bon vivant, George Sanders, in his suicide note explained that he was leaving his life because he was bored. In the following offerings we celebrate a time when cynics could be appreciated as unique and exotic. CYNICAL GIRL by Marshall Crenshaw proclaims the lure of nihilism in a poppy, irresistible interpretation. And, THEM TERRIBLE BOOTS by the Orlons makes fun of a wannabe fashionista at the crossroads of burgeoning Mod style. MARSHALL CRENSHAWIn Marshall Crenshaw's 1982 eponymous debut album, CYNICAL GIRL chimed out so brightly it was a paused that refreshed. The singer wants a cynical girl who has no use for the real world, and this notion, wrapped in candy colored chords, invited us to embrace the “Debbie Downers” in our lives, and to realize there's something comforting in the dark side. Maybe we could save each other. Crenshaw, the latter-day, second coming of Buddy Holly even portrayed the Proto-Rock God in “La Bamba” and charmed the world with his unapologetic cheeriness. But the euphoria couldn't last. His debut outing achieved his highest chart position, but it was a bracing example of positivity while it lasted. THE ORLONSThis quartet of street-wise, Philly teens made the trsition from middlin' Doo-Wop practitioners to dance craze mega stars with their triple crown of chart toppers: Wah Watusi, Don't Hang Up, and South Street, evolving into one of Cameo-Parkway's hottest acts. THEM TERRIBLE BOOTS from 1962 was the B-side to South Street, and rode that comet's tail into recording history. It's an evocative glimpse into that time when the cultural landscape was in transition from the staid 50s to the super-charged 60s. The aforementioned cynicism is reflected in the mockery to which the dude who is wearing the mod clothes is subjected. But, he was just probably a bit ahead of his time. When the only male member, (and survivor) of the group, Stephen Caldwell, repeats the title phrase in his basso profundo, the whole salty world view clicks into place.

Welcome back to Lez Hang Out, the podcast that's just a big vault full of gay thoughts locked deep in your brain. This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) hangs out with returning guest, stand-up comedian Kia Barnes (@kiacomedy), to talk about why Disney Pixar's Inside Out 2 Should've Been Gay. Ellie (@elliebrigida) couldn't make the recording, and she's devastated to have missed it, especially since Inside Out 2 was the movie she and Bailey saw on their very first date. From the second Val glides onto the screen, it's instant gay panic, from Riley and every emotion in her head. Whether it's Anxiety (voiced by queer queen Maya Hawke), Envy (played by none other than Ayo Edebiri!), or Ennui (channeling the energy of a deeply disaffected gay French man), Riley's internal world is working overtime. Add a suspiciously queer-coded coach to the mix (we're pretty sure her wife is hidden in the background somewhere) and the gay subtext is basically screaming at us in every scene. Kia shares how deeply she related to Riley, as a baby gay who just wanted to impress the older, cooler butch girls. She even smoked a cigarette (as an asthmatic!!) to get a girl's attention. Riley trying to fit in with the butch boys club? Been there. We also talk about how hard Disney tried to scrub the gay out… and failed spectacularly. From the queer-coded coach to the LGBTQ+ cast to the metaphorical coming-out arc hidden inside a vault, Inside Out 2 practically demands a rainbow overlay. And let's not forget “Beardville”, Riley's imaginary Mount Crushmore of forced heterosexuality, where she literally has to carve boys into stone so she doesn't forget them. Subtle? Absolutely not. Accurate? Tragically, yes. Then there's the “big dark secret” locked deep in Riley's mental vault. It's glowing purple, heavily guarded, and very clearly not ready to come out yet. We all know what it is (spoiler: it's lesbianism), but we'd genuinely love to know what straight people think it is. We also break down the tension between Riley and Grace, whose jealous-ex energy is off the charts. Whether Riley's feelings are mutual is still TBD, but that tension? So real. From baby gay chaos to closet metaphors and a whole lot of repressed sapphic energy, we know one thing for sure: Inside Out 2 Should've Been Gay. Financial markets cannot get a break from headlines. The Trump Administration is rolling out – and in some cases rolling back – trade tariffs at a frenzied pace. Negotiations over peace in Ukraine are only just beginning, with the shape of a resolution anyone’s guess. Fiscal policy is also front and center for bonds, with curbing deficits looking increasingly difficult as defense spending needs and the desire for growth-based policies rise. Ennui prevails as markets seem unwilling or unable to price for higher risk premia. To make sense of it, Peter Vincent, head of FX trading for EMEA at State Street Global Markets, shares his thoughts, walking through the best opportunities on offer.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Fr. Brian and Fr. Matt dive into the Pixar universe to break down themes of anxiety and sense of self in this year's Inside Out 2, the highest-grossing animated film of all time and sequel to the 2015 hit Inside Out. Our hosts draw parallels between the other emotions' efforts to rein in Anxiety (the character) and the Christian understanding that anxiety (the emotion) is not from God. They also discuss the movie's assertion that a person's sense of self is rooted in core memories and beliefs, similar to the Christian perspective of our identity being rooted in our relationship with God.(0:28) Our hosts greet each other and talk about some of the films they've seen recently. Fr. Brian playfully teases Fr. Matt for being “on the jumpy side” when watching scary movies. Then, they introduce today's topic: Inside Out 2, the highest-grossing animated film of all time and sequel to the 2015 hit Inside Out.(3:53) Fr. Matt provides a synopsis of Inside Out, the story of a young girl named Riley who is guided through life by five anthropomorphized emotions: Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust. Both Fr. Matt and Fr. Brian liked Inside Out better than its sequel, which adds a few more emotions to the mix: Anxiety, Envy, Embarrassment, Ennui, and–for just a moment–Nostalgia. They discuss how the existence of these new emotions, and the ways they interact with each other, impact the world building set by the original film.(10:46) After a brief interlude to revisit Fr. Matt's tendency toward jumpiness in the theater, our hosts discuss one of the new world building elements introduced in the film: Riley's memories grow into her beliefs, which together form her sense of self. At the beginning of the movie, her sense of self is, “I am a good person.” With the arrival of Anxiety, this sense of self is lost and replaced with, “I am not good enough.”(16:55) Fr. Matt shares his 7-year-old cousin's take on the film's message: “We can't let anxiety have control.” This opens the door to a discussion about the Christian understanding that anxiety is not from God, a teaching that is reflected in the film as the other characters work to control Anxiety and prevent her from controlling Riley.(25:10) Fr. Brian talks about the movie's assertion that a person's sense of self is rooted in core memories and beliefs, comparing it to the Christian perspective of our identity being rooted in our relationship with God. He and Fr. Matt highlight some of the more clever world building elements from the film, including the “Sarchasm,” a chasm inside Riley's mind that transforms genuine speech into sarcastic taunts. (29:36) Fr. Matt says the film is missing the idea of virtue driving our actions. Both hosts agree that they'd love to see a film similar to the Inside Out franchise featuring characters modeled after faith, hope, charity, prudence, justice, temperance, and fortitude. Fr. Brian suggests the Prudence character would lead the way, like Joy does in the existing films.(31:58) Our hosts rank Inside Out 2 using their “seeds of the word” rating, based on how clearly they saw goodness, truth, and beauty reflected in the story. They conclude the episode by sharing their all-time favorite Pixar movies.

“The world is yearning for men to show up, men who know who they are and why they are here.” We hear a lot about toxic masculinity, what about a masculine man of God? The ones who Grow Up and Show Up. They do not fall prey to the myth, “I'm not hurting anyone” as they fail to become the man God meant them to be choosing instead to engage in wasteful wiles that hijack their time. Ennui is a French word that means dissatisfaction that comes from not being mission focused. “In Gen. 2:15, man was to keep the garden (NKJV), the Hebrew word, shamar means to guard, to protect and to watch over. On this episode of Unsupervised Learning Razib talks to Louise Perry. A British journalist known for her commentary on feminism and gender issues, Perry is the author of the book The Case Against the Sexual Revolution. She also contributes to The New Statesman, UnHerd, and The Daily Mail, and has a Substack at Maiden Mother Matriarch. Perry is a graduate of University of London's School of Oriental and African Studies, with a degree in anthropology. Perry and Razib first discuss Britain's current housing crisis, the reasons and possible solutions. Though the Office for National Statistics estimates the UK's population at 67.1 million, Perry believes that the true number is likely higher because individuals who are present illegally or have a “gray” status are unlikely to respond. But even this population would make the UK over eight times more densely populated than the US, with England being 13 times denser. In fact, England's population density is similar to India's. Perry also brings up the reality of massive immigration flows over the last few years; where before 2020 net migration was around ~200,000 per year, since 2021 the figure has been closer to ~500,000. Additionally, many of these immigrants are placed in “social housing,” subsidized or owned by the government. Perry also points out that the legal regulations in Britain stipulate that about 30% of new developments be allocated for social housing, which incentivizes incumbent homeowners to block construction. Additionally, the rate of population growth is much higher than the British construction industry's capacity to keep up with the theoretical demand. The UK does not produce enough bricks, nor does it have the labor pool of homebuilders. The conversation continues to a broader discussion of the ennui in modern British society. Perry asserts that a major problem driving the housing crisis is that the UK has only one major city, London, and any professional who wants to settle in a more affordable region must also take a major salary cut. Setting aside London, and its economic engines of finance and commerce, Perry characterizes the rest of the UK as more akin to a developing Eastern Europe nation. She also believes that the next decade will see a mass flight of the upper-middle-class, the primary tax base of the state. Perry herself has Australian citizenship through her parents (who immigrated from Australia to the UK), while her husband has an American mother. Her situation is common to many upper-middle-class Britons, who have connections to Canada, the US, New Zealand and Australia. Perry believes this is one reason the British political culture is not reforming itself: so many have in the back of their head that they can jump ship if it starts sinking. Ultimately, her thesis is that British openness and intellectual curiosity make the national character a poor seedbed for nationalism, and it may be inevitable that the UK is caught up and tossed about in a vortex of globalization. Today we are diving into a really fun topic — the new character in Inside Out 2, "Anxiety". For those of you who haven't seen it yet, Inside Out is a movie that personifies emotions as characters inside a young girl's mind. The sequel, released in June 2024, introduces a couple of new characters: Embarrassment, Envy, Ennui (a cool, chill, can't-be-bothered-by-anything character), and of course, Anxiety. I'm sharing 3 of my takeaways with you today! Here's a little preview of what we'll cover: How the movie depicted anxiety What the movie showed us we need to do to help us manage anxiety How anxiety serves a PURPOSE, and can actually benefit us (in moderate doses)
It's not often that we sit and think about feelings: what they are, where they come from, and why they're happening. We just feel them. Almost ten years ago, one movie gave voice to what may be an indescribable experience: discovering your feelings. That movie was Inside Out. This weekend, Inside Out 2 premiered in theaters. It follows 13-year-old Riley as a few new feelings are added to the mix as she enters her teen years: Envy, Ennui, Embarrassment, and Anxiety. We talk to screenwriter Dave Holstein and experts about what it means to discover your feelings throughout your childhood – and your adulthood, too. Want to support 1A? Pixar's new movie, Inside Out 2 came out Friday. It's the sequel to the 2015 movie Inside Out, which follows the life of 11-year-old Riley and her family as they move to San Francisco. In Inside Out 2, Riley is 13 and thriving in her new city. She has friends and is a star on her hockey team. But when puberty hits one night, four new emotions come into play: Envy, Ennui, Embarrassment and most of all, Anxiety. Clinical psychologist and Inside Out 2 consultant Lisa Damour says the movie is surprisingly accurate when it comes to experiencing anxiety and puberty. Plus, she offers some guidance to help make the most of our anxiety. Have other pop culture science you want us to decode? It is Friday! Summer Friday hours are back. Andy and Brendan begin with an unplanned chat on the Memorial Tournament, where it falls in the schedule, if it's lost luster, and what the ideal scenario is for it going forward as all they want to do is turn their eyes to Pinehurst. Then they get to some random cleanup, on recent drone disturbances at pro golf events, a New York Times report of a big NYC meeting between the PGA Tour and Saudi PIF, and the subject of Jason Day sleeping on a bus parked in his driveway for his hometown event. Then they get back to some SGS roots with an old “Flashlight” on Tommy Tolles. How did he get into golf? Where is he now? And how in the world did he never win?
