CBIA BizCast: Mentoring Next-Generation Talent How do you interest students in a career they may not know anything about? That's a question the team at Mercer Investments is working to answer. Mercer principal Siddhartha Kalita joined the CBIA BizCast to highlight the company's mentorship program, designed to inspire high students from disadvantaged backgrounds to explore financial services careers. Kalita said the initiative was created to bring the concept of financial awareness and career opportunities to young people while they're still in school. “I had a good foundation at home,” Kalita said. “My parents pushed me to a math program, and that helped me to get that first, first head start into this world of financial industries. Not everyone has that background.” To put the initiative into action, Mercer connected with several schools including Wilbur Cross High School in New Haven. They then built a three-phase program: Phase 1: Employees visit the school to tell students about careers in financial services. Phase 2: Interested students visit Mercer's Norwalk office to see firsthand what a financial services career entails. Phase 3: Mercer mentors work one-on-one with a small group of students on a research project that gives them about 50 hours of hands-on experience. About five students end up completing the program each year, which is now in its third year. Kalita said he'll know the program is a success when one of the students joins the workforce. “We try to bring them to the reality of what they have in the future when they get out of college, if they go to college, and then how could they be really happy in life,” Kalita said. Kalita said the program is part of Mercer's long-term efforts to build a diverse and inclusive workforce. “Inclusion is in the genes of our organization,” he said. “This is one way for our company and for us to contribute back to the society, to actually create a diverse pool that one day will become the employment pool.” Related Links: Mercer Website: https://www.mercer.com/en-us/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/mercer/ Siddhartha Kalita on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/siddhartha-kalita/ CBIA Website: https://www.cbia.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/cbia/ The CBIA BizCast is made possible through the generous support of Google.

“To darba smagumu. Brīžam domāju – kā es vispār to varēju izturēt? Iekšējā konkurence bija tik liela... (..) Tad bija vieglāk to smagumu panest.”

In this episode, Kenneth is joined by Josh Hockin - Head of Coffee at Eight Ounce Coffee out of Canada, who import specialty coffee gear across North America, and beyond. They sit down to discuss one of the most innovative brewing tools there is – The Clever Dripper. Kenneth and Josh share how they use it. Including some tips and tricks, you can use to make a consistently good cup of coffee and do so without things getting messy. Including ratios, which filter to use, and maintenance tips. KEY TAKEAWAYS The Clever Dripper is super simple – ideal for using first thing in the morning when you are still a bit groggy. The spring-loaded stopper at the bottom enables you to sit it on top of a mug and let the coffee drain out. Having a lid helps to keep the heat in during extraction. Don´t use the maximum capacity. For the large Clever Dripper use the Melitta No. 4 (Kalita 103). Every gram of coffee will typically hold on to about 1.5 to 2 grams of water. Using a slightly higher ratio of coffee than normal means you are less likely to over-extract. Add your water first, to create a more predictable drawdown time. Because the Clever is plastic there is very little heat transfer. BEST MOMENTS ‘For an everyday cup, it's not a big investment and it makes delicious coffee.' ‘The moving parts that are in there are engineered quite well.´ ‘You can still get a great extraction using a smaller coffee-to-water ratio.' In this episode, Kenneth sits down with Arsalan Pourmand and Marc Chiusano of Flux Coffee to talk about using the iconic Kalita Wave to make a great pour-over. A piece of kit they have been using for many years as brewers and coffee explorers. They discuss which material is best, ratios, pour rates, bloom sizes, and brew times. This episode also covers some of the differences between flat-bottomed and cone-shaped brewers, a style of brewer that Kenneth will be taking a deeper look at next week. KEY TAKEAWAYS The Kalita Wave is available in plastic, ceramic, metal, and glass. For café use, metal is the way to go. The holes in the glass ones are a little bit bigger. The restricted flow rate of the three holes in the bottom makes mastering a pour over much easier for beginners. Pre-wetting the filter eliminates the risk of a papery taste, makes it easier to seat the filter, and helps with heat retention. If you are doing a pour over for a medium or darker rosted coffee, go for a flat-bottomed brewer to better balance out the acidity, sweetness, and body. BEST MOMENTS ‘The Kalita Wave is a great entry into pour-overs. ´ ‘{On the bloom}, we kind of prefer to just go with a little extra water to make sure that we're really soaking everything first.' ‘For me, what brewer I pick is a little bit more dependent on what kind of coffee I'm drinking.' In this episode, Kenneth and Katie sit down with Michael Matthews of Alinea Coffee Roasters, who also runs two Bearcat coffee shops in New Orleans. This is the 2nd of 3 episodes that cover what home coffee brewers need to do to be able to serve the perfect cup of coffee, every time.  This time, they explain what type of kettle gets the best results and how to get the water temperature right for each roast type. Kenneth and Michael also talk extensively about home brewers and their recommendations. Covering cone and flatbed brewers, clever drippers, Kalita Waves, April brewers, Hario V60, SCA certified brewers and the AeroPress!  That's alot of ground to cover in one episode! KEY TAKEAWAYS Temperature control gooseneck kettles give you precise control of temperature flow rate and where the water goes. Darker roast beans are a bit more structurally compromised, so you can use water that is at the lower end of the temperature range. For flatbed brewers, it is usually best to use a slightly coarser grind. Keep experimenting with your brews - you'll learn so much. If you find that your Kalita brewer chokes, put a couple of whole beans in the bottom before you add the filter! BEST MOMENTS ‘Proper water temperature is essential to proper extraction ´ ‘I really like experimenting with the clever dripper.' 'The Aeropress or a Clever is my go-to brewer most mornings.' EPISODE RESOURCES SCA certified home brewers - https://sca.coffee/certified-home-brewer GUEST RESOURCES https://www.alineacoffees.com/ https://bearcatcafe.com/ Instagram - @alineacoffeeroasters, @michaelmatthewscoffee, @brewlikemike, @bearcatCBD ABOUT THE GUEST Michael Matthews used to be a professional drummer. While touring the USA and Europe with Earphunk, Mia Borders, and Hannah Wicklund he got hooked on coffee. Between load-in and showtime, or on off days, he passed the time looking for the closest coffee shops serving good espresso. Something which made him realize that, when it came to flavor, there were some huge differences. Seeing small coffee shop owners roasting their own beans inspired him to do the same. During his downtime, he used his little Arc 800-gram roaster to learn the art and eventually ended up creating his own specialty coffee.  VALUABLE RESOURCES Award-winning single-origin specialty coffee: https://umblecoffee.com/ You're disciplined and high achieving. You never settle. Shouldn't the fuel that helps you reach your goals be held to those same standards? Instead of a crash-inducing cup of jo, you need coffee with optimal antioxidants and anti-inflammatories. A coffee so good that you can drink it black. At Umble Coffee, we only roast specialty-grade arabica coffee from around the world with cupping scores 84 and above. That's Not What Andrea Told Me

On this episode of TNWATM, we're implementing our new flow called Three on the Threes where we interview someone every 3rd episode. To kick off this new segment, we interviewed our mom - Kalita! We give you a very brief rundown of what we were like growing up and then pepper her with questions while also managing to make her tell us how awesome we both are.

The Polaroid Podcast with Michael Codrington

What's up world! Happy Friday and happy April! This episode is dedicated to my Grandmother, celebrating her birthday today! On our special episode 32, we have Collegiate Softball Juggernaut Kalita Dennis. Kalita and I became friends during our very first semester in College, both frequently visiting required athlete study hall. Hailing from Elk Grove California, Dennis is a far ways from home. She describes her upbringing as “sheltered” . An emerging outlet for Dennis became sports, playing Soccer, volleyball, Flag Football, basketball and ultimately softball growing up. For 15 years she's been playing the sport she loves, which provided her opportunities across the country. Between travel softball and playing in big tournaments, Dennis had caught the eye of various Division 3 programs. She pursued schools that would push her and force her to leave her comfort zone. A visit in Kansas was perhaps too uncomfortable , but her future was an email away. 2 of her travel teammates had committed to Howard, and Dennis shot the coaching staff and email hoping to join them at the next level. Fortunately for her she received the offer and has said that going to Howard is “the best decision” that she has made. Unfortunately not long after the commitment, the 3 learned that the coaching staff was undergoing changes. The Fall Preseason was unusual for the team, with a rush to fill the coaching vacancy looming almost constantly. Despite the adversity, the team came together in many different ways and proved competitive in the MEAC. During her Freshman campaign, she batted a whopping .411 with 32 RBIs and 62 hits. She won a plethora of awards including Meac Rookie of the Year andTeam MVP. With 8 games remaining in her Freshman year onslaught, she was recognized nationally as one of the 2019 NFCA National Freshman of the Year Award finalists. Dennis was the only HBCU player on the list, and was listed alongside the very best in women's softball. The team has taken a big leap in the past two years, loading the bullpen and developing players. Dennis came into the year with lofty expectations and respect from every pitcher in the conference. A rough start to the season was interrupted by Covid-19, which was a surreal experience for Dennis. The obvious immediate dissatisfaction of unfinished business was quickly subsided when reality set in. Dennis used the newfound time away from the game to pursue a second minor and becoming a brand ambassador for boardroom university. Roughly one year since her sophomore season ended abruptly, Dennis and the Bison secured a W. They are in the midst of the season, and are hoping to make a run at a championship. Just a few months before the season began, Dennis once again received national recognition. Below is the USA Softball Collegiate Top 50 Watch list, a massive honor for Dennis to be named. It's safe to say that she has only begun to really leave her mark on Howard, and will be remembered far past whenever she stops swinging the bat. Thanks again to Kalita and shoutout Granny
