How have the shifts in the distribution of information impact the mindset of readers in recent decades? What is the role of spiritual practitioners within the current media ecosystem? How might artists and creators design a path of sustainable, reciprocal relationships with those who enjoy their work?On the one hand, the current media landscape provides an ideal setting for anyone who'd like to share their work. As long as you have internet and a device, you could theoretically share your work with the whole digital world. On the other hand, it can feel increasingly challenging to get our work to the right people, let alone to cut through the noise and make a sustainable living. In this captivating conversation, I invited writer and editor Emily Bingham to share her extensive experience and brilliant insights on these big questions. Here's Emily's bio:Emily Bingham is a writer and editor working at the intersection of nature, wonder and well-being. Her work aims to guide readers to a deeper awareness of and appreciation for the complex living landscapes around us and within ourselves. Most recently she was a reporter for Michigan's largest digital news site, where she covered nature, the night sky, regional travel and outdoor recreation. She is currently on a self-made sabbatical after nearly 20 years in journalism. In addition to learning what it means to truly rest, she is exploring continued ways of being a facilitator of curiosity and connection – this time through her trainings in astrology, herbalism, flower essences, yoga nidra and guided time in nature. Follow her on instagram at @emilyisoutside for current writings and future offerings.Emily also recently recorded a lo-fi yoga nidra practice, which you can access here. fWotD Episode 2716: Tomorrow Speculative Fiction Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Friday, 11 October 2024 is Tomorrow Speculative Fiction.Tomorrow Speculative Fiction was a science fiction magazine edited by Algis Budrys, published in print and online in the United States from 1992 to 1999. It was launched by Pulphouse Publishing as part of its attempt to move away from book publishing to magazines, but cash flow problems led Budrys to buy the magazine after the first issue and publish it himself. There were 24 issues as a print magazine from 1993 to 1997, mostly on a bimonthly schedule. The magazine was losing money, and in 1997 Budrys moved to online publishing, rebranding the magazine as tomorrowsf. Readership grew while the magazine was free to read on the web, but plummeted when Budrys began charging for subscriptions. In 1998 Budrys stopped acquiring new fiction, only publishing reprints of his own stories, and in 1999 he shut the magazine down.Tomorrow published many new writers, though few of them went on to successful careers. Well-known authors who appeared in the magazine included Gene Wolfe, Ursula K. Le Guin, and Harlan Ellison. The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction lists The Mines of Behemoth, a novel by Michael Shea, and "Another Story", by Le Guin, as among the best work published in the magazine, but comments that Tomorrow was "rather less satisfying than one might have expected from Budrys: an uneven mix of the superior with the sufficient". Mark R. Kelly, a reviewer for Locus, described the stories as "workmanlike". Tomorrow was a finalist for the Hugo Award for Best Semiprozine in 1994 and 1995.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:38 UTC on Friday, 11 October 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Tomorrow Speculative Fiction on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm generative Olivia.

Friday, October 13th, 2023, was a scary day for the citizens of Meeker, the largest town in Colorado's Rio Blanco County, nestled on the Rockies' western slope, with a population of slightly over 6,500. It was on this day that Niki Turner and Caitlin Walker, the mother and daughter owners of the area's primary local news source, the Rio Blanco Herald Times, sent out an email with the subject line: "Crisis alert: Save your community paper." Within this ominous message, Niki and Caitlin revealed to their community the harsh realities of local news publishing and their own newspaper's critical financial status. They admitted that the operation only had enough money left to publish two more issues of the weekly newspaper and stated that they would shut down on October 26th. Unlike most businesses (and newspapers) who would fear revealing such a poor bottom line to their customers, these publishers decided that an honest, open, truthful message was the right thing to do as a warning that Rio Blanco would soon be a “news desert,” like so many other small communities throughout the US. Niki and Caitlin informed the public that the newspaper's reach was at an all-time high, stating that: “Readership numbers continue to grow, with the Herald being read by more than 2,200 people every week. On top of that, 1,600 of you get our weekly email, 3,000 visit the website each week, and we have excellent social media engagement.” They went on to say that: “We will be letting our only full-time reporter go. We are cutting the number of papers we print and distribute to the bone. We are cutting every other extraneous expense we can think of, including our own paychecks. As a last resort, we'll try cutting the print edition entirely and go digital-only. Then came their plea for help, frankly asking that the citizens of Rio Blanco County "help to save your community newspaper.” On October 19th, Niki penned her weekly printed editorial with the headline: "If a town loses its paper, it's less of a town," a quote borrowed from Al Cross, Director emeritus of the Institute for Rural Journalism and Community Issues at the University of Kentucky. She wrote, "When we became aware of a precarious financial situation last week, we went into emergency mode. As 'keepers of the flame' — stewards of a community newspaper that's one of the oldest businesses in the county — and as journalists who believe strongly in the free press and the need for independent local news, we're not willing to go down without a fight." By the end of October, the Herald Times had an additional $33,000 in their bank account from over 200 people donating to the cause, which helped keep "the presses rolling." The October 26th front page displayed a red headline: “This would have been the last edition of the Herald, ever.” The 1st paragraph of the article proudly stated: “The Herald is ecstatic to announce 100% funding, 100% from Community Supporters, through the end of 2023. That is a VERY long way from where we were two newspapers ago. In this episode of "E&P Reports," we go one-on-one with Rio Blanco Herald Times Owner/Editor Niki Turner, who made the difficult choice of offering complete transparency about the newspaper's dire financial situation to the western Colorado citizens they serve. Turner truthfully revealed in an email that the company would cease operation within two weeks unless the community offered their support, which resulted in $33,000 in contributions that saved the weekly publication, which has been printed since 1885, from extinction.

Banjo Music Courtesy of Banjo HangOutMore bad news for The New York/Hate Times for many years that failing flagship news outlet has been buoyed by readership of Sunday's magazine feature.  Well those halcyon days ended today by the appearance of Jennifer Aniston on the cover of `WSJ Sunday supplement. Mark Twain once famously remarked “a newspaper is 50% black stuff meeting 50% white stuff…” In the case of WSJ's magazine, it's 50% glamorous glossy ads meeting 50% content. No wonder the Times is trembling in its new headquarters, it's a bitter pill to wake up one day to find yourself number two.

Here's another way of looking at this episode. "Are Some Genres Aging Out of Audiences & Readership?" With Flinch Books' John Bruening and Jim Beard, Alex Simmons and Christopher Ryan discuss whether pulp, adventure, and other older genres are still marketable. While we enjoyed these films, we couldn't help but notice the outdated sensibilities and lack of political correctness present in the 1940s. This got us thinking: Can these types of tropes and characters still have a place in society today? What still works, and what has to change? We'll dive deep into this question and explore the critiques of the new Indiana Jones movie from younger people. Are these iconic heroes still relevant in the modern world? The Better Angels Publishing Company announces that the “Stop Making Yourself Miserable” podcast will now begin its annual summer hiatus. We'll resume our normal schedule again in the fall. At this point, I'd like to take the opportunity to thank everyone for your continued, enthusiastic support. As you know, the purpose of these podcasts is to present intriguing information that is specifically designed to stimulate personal growth, and I'm happy to report that so far, it has been a terrific success. Let's take a look at some robust statistics that highlight how valuable your support has been. To date, we have completed a total of 74 episodes, which are sent out by email to our growing subscriber base. We also have readers and listeners who access the podcasts entirely on their own. So far, we've had close to 15,000 views of the written episodes and about 4,500 downloads of the recordings. Now, this has all happened with no marketing whatsoever – simply by word of mouth, which makes these statistics all the more impressive.   Also, our podcast emails continue to enjoy a tremendous open rate. According to industry standards, the average open rate for this kind of content is about 7-10%. Since we began, our open rate has steadily maintained an incredible 57.3%, which is more than five times the industry standard! So once again, I want to offer our sincere thanks to you for your loyal support. Now, besides this hiatus announcement and podcast update, I am happy to report a few other significant upcoming developments as well. As you may know, this August marks the fifth anniversary of the publishing of my memoir, “Wilt, Ike & Me” and it continues to be extremely well-received.  Readership has been growing steadily, and we recently passed seventy-five unsolicited five-star reviews on Amazon.  For your interest, I'll add a couple of samples at the end of this email.  But now for some exciting 5th anniversary news about the book.  At the end of August, we will be publishing a commemorative, limited edition hardback version and we are going to prepare a special release for podcast subscribers. I'll keep you posted as things develop, so keep an eye on your inbox. And also, in a completely different genre, at the end of 2023 we are planning to release a new book called, “The Higher Mind Training – How Your Innate Genius Can Transform Your Life.” By way of background, there was a famous NASA study that found that 98% of humans begin life as a creative genius, and even though we've mainly lost touch with it, we still have this incredible resource within our intelligence.  Resulting from over fifty years of research and experience in the field of Inner Growth, I've drawn on sources as diverse as Ancient Wisdom through to modern neuroscience, to design this program to help the average, everyday person fulfill their highest potential. Of course, I'll keep you posted on the progress of this groundbreaking project as it continues to evolve and grow. As you can see, we have a number of innovative projects in the works, and there are a few more in development that I will mention to you a little more down the road. So even though the podcasts will cease for now, keep on the lookout for email updates from me that will be arriving in your inbox on a regular basis. In closing, I wish you a terrific summer and I urge you to keep on growing your awareness to the higher levels of understanding. Remember, there's no end to this inner evolution and we're all changing every single day. It's how our intelligence naturally grows, so we don't have to resist it and we don't have to be afraid of it.  The great master of words, Ben Franklin, once put a great spin on it when he summed it up this way: “When you're finished changing, you're finished.”   As I mentioned, here are a few Amazon review samples about “Wilt, Ike & Me”: “David Richman, eloquently delves deeply into the underlying meaning behind unanticipated losses. He shares a valuable perspective on the inevitable challenges that we will all face in life. I couldn't put this book down!”   “A poignant and evocatively written tale of a great Black American and his cultural immersion in a 60's Jewish family. This is a unique and unlikely story that could only happen in the USA amid the cultural ferment that was 1960s America.”   “Richman has brought us a rare and wonderful treat, rich with details that ring with joy, pain and meaning.  He opens a doorway to a depth of meaning that we rarely stumble on ourselves. Richman is a master storyteller, but far more important are the stories he has to tell. Quite an extraordinary feat and quite an extraordinary book.”    I hope you can relax and enjoy your inner journey. And I wish you all the best. Have a great summer! – DR  By the way, if you haven't gotten a copy of the book yet, here is a link to order: Wilt, Ike & Me Available Now   And if you would like to write a review, you can post it to this link: Review Wilt, Ike & Me

What does the future hold for email marketing? What's going to happen in the next year and beyond? As we crack open this brand-new 2023, let's go and find out. Here are our predictions for email marketing in 2023. Be warned - some of these things might change the way you view your marketing. Ready to get planning for an explosive 2023?SOME EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: (0:13) Come and talk to us inside our FREE Facebook group.(4:07) The importance of having a direct line with your customers.(8:32) The tech in email is going to improve.(10:07) AI writing tools will get smarter.(14:17) Readership of email on mobile devices is going to continue to grow.(15:10) More businesses will make email marketing their top priority.(17:38) The introduction of algorithms for individual inboxes.(19:38) People who don't take email marketing seriously will be left behind.(21:04 ) Want to learn how to make email marketing work for you in 2023 and beyond?(21:38) Subject line of the week. The importance of having a direct line with your customersThe first shift we see happening when it comes to email marketing in 2023 is the fact that having a direct line with your customers is going to become more important than ever. Why? Because the social media algorithms are going to continue to throttle organic reach in favour of ads, which are getting a lot more real estate on those platforms. Advertising costs continue to increase because social media platforms have limited space and inventory to display ads. With more and more businesses advertising and usership going down as people switch to other platforms, we've definitely seen a huge shift over the past few years. Take Facebook, for example. We all used to see a lot more posts from our friends and only a few ads from big companies. But now the balance has tipped in favour of ads because that's how the platforms make their money. And the reach for organic social posting is pitifully low. We knew it was tough before, but if you put great value out there, back then you could go viral. And if you decided to run ads, the return was a lot higher. Still, not as high as the return for email marketing, which is about $80-$90 for every $1 you spend. So having that direct line where you can talk to your customers through a channel that you own (email) and lands directly onto their phones is going to be super important. There is no scalability issue with email marketingIn a nutshell, with demand for advertising being at an all-time high, social media has become an unpredictably unscalable business. But there's no scalability issue with email because every single person who is on your list can have a one-way conversation with you. You have as much space in their inbox as they're willing to give you. At any point, they can choose to unsubscribe, but until then, you can have a back-and-forth conversation with your audience. The tech in email is going to improve Another prediction for email marketing in 2023 is to do with tech. In the next few years, technology is going to allow us to put more and more interactive elements into emails, such as surveys and videos. And it's going to become more accessible too.As a result, more people are going to be attracted to the world of email marketing because of the Shiny Object Syndrome phenomenon. In fairness, email hasn't evolved much from a tech perspective for a long time - not much has changed in terms of what's possible. So the changes will come in. But we're not convinced that the advancement in tech is going to be a...

It could be like doing whatever you can to get someone else to have attention or whatever it is.”“The other secret about the podcast is it would be easier for me, or it's easier for me to do it seven days a week than it would be to do it like three to five days a week. Like if it was like Monday, Wednesday, Friday, it would be harder than every day because every day it has to happen, right. Whereas if it's on like a staggered schedule, it's like, oh, you just kind of get off the rhythm.”“And so the only thing you can do is take more hits or try, you know, like you take more chances. That quote about, like, to be luckier…I'd like to have more luck, take more chances”*“Most of the time I'm not selling anything. Like most of the time, it's like for months or years go by without doing much. The podcast is free. The blog is free. Other stuff is free. I'm not really working on trying to build out that part of the online business. So I guess when the time comes to launch the book, I don't hesitate to push it a little bit because I mean like I said, I know that that's going to help people, and then I know it's going to help me as well.”*“...[A]nybody who joins my email list, that person has chosen to give me like their most valuable asset, which is their time and their attention…As much as possible, I want to build individual relationships with those people… And so for the first 10,000 people that joined over the course of, I don't know, two years, I wrote to each one of those people. Not just like an autoresponder, but I wrote an actual email to those people, and said, “Hey Matt, thanks so much for joining”, you know, “Hope you like it. Let me know what you're up to.” … [I built it] one by one.” *SELECTED LINKS FROM THE EPISODEConnect with Chris GuillebeauWebsite: https://chrisguillebeau.comTwitter: twitter.com/chrisguillebeauInstagram: instagram.com/193countriesGretchen Rubin & The Happiness ProjectSeth GodinTim GrahlFor show notes, transcripts and to attend our live podcasts visit: podcast.londonwriterssalon.comFor free writing sessions, join free Writers' Hours: writershour.comFollow London Writers' Salon:Twitter: twitter.com/WritersSalonInstagram: instagram.com/londonwriterssalonFacebook: facebook.com/LondonWritersSalon*CREDITSProduction by Victoria Spooner. Stories carry messages from one generation to the next. On this episode author Chris Madeley shares why she was inspired to create The Cones Books children’s series and how her focus on valuable lessons has created an opportunity for families to spend time and align values together. “The books are just big enough so you can sit the child on your knee, put your arms around them, have a cuddle and understand the story.” – Chris Madeley About Chris Madeley: Chris has always enjoyed words, books and writing for as long as she can remember. Having been brought up in a family which did not possess a television, she was well used to making her own entertainment and with a very fertile imagination and a preference for her own company, she immersed herself in the world of make-believe and fantasy. Chris is the author of the Cones children’s books series, teaching valuable lessons along the way. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: I want more columns like Future Perfect, but for science publications, published by James Lin on March 8, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. 1. Introduction Positive public opinion is an important asset for convincing really smart people to work on the most important—yet still socially unsexy—problems, such as AI safety. I'm going to lay out the case for establishing EA-adjacent columns in reputable science/tech publications (e.g. MIT Tech Review, Scientific American, etc), and how—given the precedence of similar ventures and a fair number of EA science writers—there's a strong possibility this idea becomes reality. A note: I have a publication—X—in mind which I won't name in this post, but feel free to reach out if you're interested! 2. Problem Observations are based on personal experience from retreats and community building for Harvard/MIT. An outsized proportion of the progress made in the field of AI safety comes from a minority of brilliant EAs (e.g. Paul Christiano) working on hard problems, rather than simply increasing member counts and recruiting capable but otherwise unexceptional students, even when they're from a fancy school. Additionally, it's often hard to convince highly-talented CS students to work on AI safety when there are other competing career paths that are considerably more appealing, such as finance, Big Tech, and transformative startups. The general sentiment seems to be: “Wow, seems important. Hopefully someone else solves this.” There are 2 main reasons: It's hard to know where to start; the problem feels like a black box. For all of its importance and neglectedness, working on minimizing AI risk is not yet an appealing problem to work on. Headlines frequently evangelize the amazing work responsible for computer vision advancing beyond human capabilities, and deep learning systems beating the world's best at Go, but we rarely hear about AI safety triumphs, even when there are breakthroughs. Considering the technical rigor required and also the significant impact it has on the future going well, we need to hear more about these successes. This is the problem I'll attempt to address. 3. Solution One possible solution is reaching out to students in groups with a high density of technical prowess (e.g. IMO camps). Others have suggested similar ideas, so this proposal will focus on a different form of outreach. There should be a shift in the public discourse towards focusing more on AI safety and existential risk in general. I claim that working with a reputable publication organization and having libraries of articles to direct excited students towards will gradually make it easier to recruit von Neumanns. Some great examples of outreach in this category include The Precipice and the Future Perfect column at Vox, spearheaded by folks like Kelsey Piper, Ezra Klein, and Dylan Matthews. Back in 2019, Kelsey suggested that more initiatives like FP at other organizations could do quite a lot of good, and I'm not aware of any explicit expansions into this space. I would love to hear about some other EA-adjacent columns like this that currently exist, and I'm excited about generating more initiatives like these! Specifically, I want to launch an X-Risk or EA-adjacent column, similar to Future Perfect, for large science/tech publications like X. I think this would be quite impactful and tractable. 3.1 What Impact will this have? Working with existing organizations come with major perks. Readership stats for X hover around 5 million unique monthly readers and 500k estimated print subscriptions. Those are big numbers! Each month, there are around 20 articles, which translates into an average of 250,000 views per article. Some pieces will have millions and others in the low deci-thousands; but overall, pretty good. Having articles on AI Safety (and o...

How can we best navigate power dynamics within a dance workplace? What about through active agency and heterarchy? Organizational structures have historically been a challenge for corporates and performing arts groups alike, mostly presenting itself as a tough nut to crack. However, therein lie a multitude of ways to better grasp and understand the psychology and modus operandi of our environment, resulting in a reframing and distancing from the often negative connotations associated with the concept of POWER. Sarah Rubidge is an educator, academic and choreographer and digital artist working in dance for over 40 years. She was Head of Education at Rambert Dance Company and headed up the MA in Dance Studies at the Laban Centre between 1992 and 1997.  She is currently mentoring Postgraduate students at the Bartlett School of Architecture Masters in Design for Performance and Interaction, and serves as a PhD examiner and mentor.  She was subsequently awarded a Readership and then a Professorship in Choreography and New Media. Kickstarting the month of Politics, this episode explores the research and methods of navigating power dynamics within the increasingly complex workplace of the performing arts.
