We are replaying one of our most popular episodes for you this week! Brian Cygan and Amy Hudson break down the age-old question of whether muscle really weighs more than fat and why the number on the scale can be very misleading when you're trying to improve your health and fitness. When many people start a strength training program, they look at their body composition and may wonder whether muscle is heavier than fat. The accurate answer is that muscle is more dense than fat. When people say that muscle weighs more than fat, what's really being communicated is that muscle is more dense so it takes up less space within the body. Body fat is more voluminous. This is why you get a better change in body composition and physical health when you lose body fat as opposed to a combination of fat and muscle. The ideal approach to weight loss is to do what it takes to maximize fat loss, and the only way to do that is to combine whole food nutrition and whole effort exercise; science-based and intense strength training. If you don't do strength training when combined with whole food nutrition, you will lose weight from both body fat and muscle mass. This can result in a slower metabolism and actually regaining the weight in the future. If you lose five pounds of body fat, you may not see a difference on the scale but still see a considerable improvement in body composition. You can lose more of your body mass overall even without losing a pound on the scale. The scale may not change over the course of the year but you will still feel stronger and have more energy and stamina. Get rid of the preconceived notions of what number on your scale means you're healthy, and instead focus on adding strength, losing body fat, and feeling great. Also, Texas residents seeking abortions are traveling to a Shreveport women's health clinic. Patrick Madden hosted this episode of Louisiana Considered. In a story originally aired Friday on NPR's All Things Considered, NPR's Sarah McCammonand Gulf States Newsroom reporter Shalina Chatlanitalk with residents of LaPlace about why they choose to remain in the city despite repeatedly being subjected to extreme tropical weather conditions. In another story by Sarah McCammonaired last Thursday, she reports on the impact of Texas' 6-week abortion ban in Louisiana. When you're planning a wedding, the most special people in your life come forward to center stage as those who you want to include in the event. But how do you choose who will be part of your wedding party without hurt feelings? How do you navigate the logistics of who should do what? Are there requirements you need to meet like with an even number of people, matching jammies and photos? And what if you're just not into a wedding party at all? On today's show Christy and Michelle are connecting with Leah Weinberg. You might remember her from Episode 181 (https://weddingplanning.fireside.fm/the-wedding-is-over-now-what), she's a former lawyer and current wedding planner in NYC, owner of Color Pop Events and author of the book “The Wedding Roller Coaster: Keeping Your Relationship Intact Through the Ups and Downs.” Leah's breaking down a few rules and tips on how to avoid Wedding Party Drama. Big Takeaways * Planners love when you don't have a wedding party! It really makes things so much easier. This is not to say you can't have, but don't feel weird about the decision to not. * When you are picking members of the wedding party: - Don't do things out of obligation * It is important to consider how you are involving meaningful people in your wedding, and that might not be as a member of the party * Being a wedding party is a huge commitment, consider that as well. It is not personal if someone cannot show up or afford to dive in to the more in-depth role * Tell the people you are asking to be in the party exactly what their expectations will be up front. And go from there. Figure out your deal breakers. * How do the people you are considering make you feel? * Someone telling you they can't or do not want to be in your wedding party should be okay. It's okay to be sad and disappointed, but you must respect their decision. * Even if you don't have a wedding party, you can still incorporate your friends on the day of. I.e., makeup and mimosas! Firing a wedding party member * No matter what has happened, as the Marry-er, what will give you the most peace and zen for your wedding day? * Weigh the positivity vs the negativity. Ultimately you want your wedding day to bring you joy and celebration * Tell your wedding party about how much you love your vendors and planners. It's more common than it should be that a wedding party is rude to the planner and that just makes it harder on everyone. Best Practices for Looks: * Give your wedding party as much detail and specificity as possible, especially if there is not one type of dress * There are brands that do a variety of colors/styles. Then you can give more specific parameters for everyone. * Do not dictate the hair style. It is very old school and does not always look very good. * You can set loose parameters for hair and makeup, but gone are the days of everyone looking the exact same. * Being too particular about what you want can be unintentionally offensive. People's style can * be a very personal thing. Weight is only a metric. Treat it as that and that alone. It is too easy to put too much into the number on the scale, and when you do that, I promise you, you start thinking less about your health and more about seeing the number go down by any means...skipping meals, eliminating food groups, and so on. Weigh yourself infrequently so that you can accurately track your progress. No more than once a week, and preferably, once a month or less. If you can't do this, you probably need to get rid of your scale. Since 1960, “The Andy Griffith Show” has appeared on televisions across the country and in North Carolina nonstop. It has been a cultural phenomenon with an incredible lasting impact. But why, and will it continue? A new documentary examines those questions and more, especially in light of questions today on whether a Mayberry approach would work to convince people to take the COVID-19 vaccine. On this week's episode of “Tying It Together With Tim Boyum,” Tim is joined by Chris Hudson, director of “The Mayberry Effect,” and historian Dr. Gary Freeze for a fun, educational and perhaps controversial look at the past, present and future impact of “The Andy Griffith Show.” JOIN THE CONVERSATION Do you have any thoughts or questions for Tim? Weigh in on Twitter with the hashtag #TyingItTogetherNC. Afterward, rate the podcast and leave a review to tell us what you think!
Pfizer-BioNTech says a clinical trial of its COVID-19 vaccine recorded a robust immune response in five- to 11-year-olds, and the company plans to seek regulatory approval as soon as possible. Some experts say that approval process must move quickly to protect children against the virus, but also with the necessary transparency and efforts to reassure the hesitant, and combat misinformation. Matt Galloway talks to Halifax parent Fallon Jones, who is keen to have her eldest vaccinated, but sees hesitation among other parents; Dr. Cora Constantinescu, a pediatrician and infectious disease doctor at Alberta Children's Hospital, who also works at the Vaccine Hesitancy Clinic; and Dr. Kashif Pirzada, an emergency physician in Toronto, and a co-founder of Masks4Canada, a group that advocates for masking, vaccines, rapid tests, and improved ventilation.
In episode 13, host Cuneyt Akay welcomes John Pappalardo, Ben Greenberg, and John Huber, all shareholders in Greenberg Traurig's White Collar Defense & Special Investigations Practice and former U.S. Attorneys. The group discusses the National Security Study Memorandum recently issued by the Biden administration, including its development and implementation, and how it may affect anti-corruption enforcement. The team explains how the memorandum will affect private companies within the United States as well as foreign banks, and the ways different government agencies may interact to enforce the new guidelines.
Do you wonder what you “should” weigh? Where did that “should” come from anyway? Who or what determines whether someone is a healthy weight, overweight or obese? Is BMI legit? How do you know when you're at a healthy weight for you? All bodies are different. Every body has its own naturally healthy weight range. I can't tell you what that is, but I can give you an idea about how to figure yours out. Do you already have an idea what you think your weight “should” be? Where did that idea come from? In this episode, I discuss: Whether Body Mass Index is a legitimate measure of a healthy weight; What factors play into determining your weight; What set point is and whether you can alter it; How dieting negatively affects your ability to change your weight; and How you can determine what is a healthy weight for you. If you enjoy this episode, please feel free to rate and review the podcast on whatever app you're listening on, and share with a friend!

Benny White, a prominent Pima County Republican data analyst and Larry Moore, the founder of Clear Ballot, one of the largest vote-tabulation companies in the nation, have analyzed voting patterns using public records. Over the summer, White and Moore independently offered their expertise multiple times to the Arizona state Senate's review of Maricopa County's ballots. Clear Ballot had no formal role in the analysis. Arizona Senate President Karen Fann, R-Prescott, rejected their offer. In this week's episode of The Gaggle, an Arizona politics podcast, hosts Yvonne Wingett Sanchez and Ronald J. Hansen speak with White and Moore who give us a sense of what they'll be on the lookout for once the ballot-review report is released.
This episode of the Fit Father Project Podcast introduces you to the benefits of weighing yourself every day, and what the REAL reason is for doing so. Most of us use our bathroom scales to check what damage a weekend of poor eating and little exercise has done. For that reason, I wanted to discuss the importance of weighing, when to do it for maximum benefit, and when NOT to do it (or at least not getting caught up in the numbers). Weighing yourself should be a way to track your progress, show you when to make corrections to your habits, and identify what works and what doesn't. It's a feedback loop that will help you stay encouraged and positive about the results you are getting from your efforts. Listen in to this short episode to understand the right way to use your scale, and when!
