Welcome to Episode 10 of The Dry Ground Podcast! We are talking about the actual Exodus during this episode! The narrative has been leading up to this moment. It feels like we have been waiting for this escape for a long time and that feeling is a part of the intention of the Torah writers! By the time you get here you feel like you are bursting out of Egypt yourself! We will talk about the Egyptians crazed pursuit of the Israelites, why we think the Red Sea is better represented by the name 'Sea of Reeds'. As well, what is with that mysterious pillar of cloud and fire? We will talk about it. We see the sea part and the Israelites walk out of Egypt untouched on 'Dry Ground'! Welcome to Episode 8 of The Dry Ground Podcast! We are engaging in a discussion about the large numbers of Israelites involved in the Exodus. What are the factors important to interpreting these numbers? We are talking roughly 2 million Israelites bolting from Egypt during the Exodus. It seems like a logistical nightmare. I find it hard to get my family of four in the car for an outing to the mall! How did Moses do it? With God, obviously! There are some great explanations for these numbers and we will be relying on a scholar named Nahum M. Sarna to guide us during this podcast. I recommend you check out his book if you want to take it deeper (Exploring Exodus: The Origins of Biblical Israel Book) Let's do this. Hey there, welcome back! This is Episode 5 of The Dry Ground and fair warning; we are going into the weeds! It's not uncommon during any venture into the Old Testament to run into some content that just throws you off or feels to lofty to get your head around. In this episode, we are going to discuss the Divine name of God and this super sketchy story about…the bridegroom of blood! Don't worry; we aren't going into this amazon of ancient text alone. We wanted to bring in an expert and a brother who we trust to bring his Hebrew Bible A game. Joining us via Skype today we have Jason Alexander from Madison Wisconsin. Forgive us, but our laptop didn't have enough storage space to download his resume but he comes to us with a Master of Arts in Hebrew Bible from UW Madison. By the way, if the audio quality is less than perfect, we apologize. James was trying to stream the Cowboys - Texans game and it was messing with our Wi-Fi! ;)
Welcome to Episode 4! - In this episode we will talk about the call of Moses, the deliverer. There is much to unpack and we hope and pray God will bless you as we jump in to this wonderful and strange story of God calling Moses out of a burning bush. Enjoy! In episode 3 we will discuss Exodus chapters 1 and 2. We clearly see the connection between Genesis and Exodus. While Exodus may be a continuation of the Torah story, it's not a poorly executed sequel to a movie. It is truly the centerpiece of the Torah! There are a number of ways to conceive of the overall structure and flow of the story. While there are many interesting and compelling characters in Exodus, the one that stands at the center, singing out the song of his life is Yahweh God! We will look at the people of Israel in the Egyptian context. We will talk about the prosperity and fruitfulness of the Israelites in the foreign nation. Despite the difficulties associated with being in a foreign land they flourish and fulfill the promises God made to Abraham and his offspring (Gen. 12:1-3). We will also talk about the escalating oppression they faced under a king that did not know Joseph. This new Pharaoh proves to be a truly wicked figure and even goes so far as to call for a genocide in his land. This is where we are introduced to the Hebrew midwives, Shiphrah and Puah. These women are of the highest character and they creatively defend the male children born to Israel. We will conclude the podcast with a brief discussion of Moses' birth, youth, and calling. We are excited to jump into this episode with you. Enjoy! Bibliography for The Dry Ground Podcast Childs, Brevard Springs. Book of Exodus: A Critical, Theological Commentary. We are continuing our discussion on the Torah from last week. In episode 1 we talked about the importance of reading and understating the torah story as Christians in todays world. We started talking about Torah Trail Blazes… these are the foundational pillars of the torah story that every Christian should seek to understand. They help to shape the overarching meta-narrative of the Old Testament and thus also the story of our Lord, King Jesus. In the last episode we made it through the first trail blaze…[Genesis 1-11] The story of Yahweh's creation and the origins of humankind. This world he creates is both great and terrible at the same time. He creates an ideal world were he can dwell intimately with his creation, but they (we) are very effective at making a mess of everything. Today, in episode 2, we are going to continue our conversation on these important moments in the Torah story. We will be talking about the 4 remaining trail blazes: Genesis 12-50 – Yahweh and the beginnings of Abraham's family Exodus 1-15 – The Story of Moses, the deliverer and the Exodus from Egypt Exodus 16-Numbers 36 – The story of the sojourn to Sinai and the peoples reception of the covenant Deuteronomy– This is Moses' final address to the people of Israel and the promises of Israel's future covenant with Yahweh. We have a lot of ground to cover today so hang in there. We are excited to continue this conversation with you! Bibliography for The Dry Ground Podcast Childs, Brevard Springs. We are beginning a series on the book of Exodus. In episode 1 and 2 we are going to have a conversation about the significance of the torah. Today we will be talking through questions like: What is the Torah? Why is important to know what it says and what does Jesus think of it? We will also start talking about the beginning of the Torah story in Genesis. We look forward to diving in to this conversation with you.
