Join hosts Rolf Jacobson, Kathryn Schifferdecker, and Karoline Lewis on this episode of "I Love to Tell the Story," a podcast on the narrative lectionary for October 5th, 2025, as they explore the powerful story of manna in Exodus 16. After the Israelites' dramatic exodus from Egypt, they find themselves hungry and complaining in the wilderness, longing for the "flesh pots of Egypt." But God responds to their grumbling with miraculous provision - sending quail for meat and manna, the mysterious "bread from heaven" that would sustain them for 40 years. Our hosts dive deep into this foundational story, exploring themes of freedom versus security, God's faithful provision, and what it means to trust God day by day. Catherine connects this ancient story to Jesus' "Bread of Life" discourse in John 6, while Ralph shares insights about the "manna economy" - where everyone has enough and no one lacks. Discover how this wilderness story reveals both human nature and God's character as the ultimate provider, and learn why the manna stopped only when Israel was ready to enter the promised land.

Pastor John teaching from the Book of Exodus Chapter 16.
In this dynamic exploration of Exodus 16, we're invited to reflect on God's provision and our daily dependence on Him. The story of manna in the wilderness isn't just about food. God's daily provision of bread from heaven was a test, teaching the Israelites that true life comes not just from physical sustenance, but from every word that proceeds from God's mouth. This challenges us to examine our own lives: Do we trust God's provision day by day? Are we willing to rely on His word for guidance in all aspects of our lives?

Why was complaining a temptation for Israel after they left Egypt, and why is it still a struggle for us today? The Rev. Dr. Reed Lessing (Professor of Theology & Ministry, Paul Edwin F. and Esther L. Laatsch Chair of Old Testament Studies, Director of the Pre-Seminary Program, and Director of The Center for Biblical Studies at Concordia University St. Paul) joins Andy and Sarah for a series on his book Deliver Us: God's Rescue Story in Exodus to talk about Israel's relationship with shame in Exodus, why complaining is such a temptation, what is significant about Rephidim, the role of Mount Sinai in the Exodus story, and how God's redemptive activity is for all creation. This week Jon talks about the need to rely on the daily sustenance that is Jesus: the Bread of Life. The problem is that many of us rely on stale bread, not daily bread. Scripture: Ephesians 5.1-2, John 6.35, Exodus 16, Matthew 6.11 As always, feel free to reach out to Jon to further discuss this week's devotional at Jon@christianoutdoors.org

As the nation of Israel begins their journey into the wilderness, they find themselves without food and water, but rather than turn to the Lord, they complain to Moses. The Lord graciously provides for his people despite their grumbling, giving them, not only food and water, but a moral code by which they might live; this Decalogue, more commonly known as the Ten Commandments, allowed Israel to know how they could live a life that pleased the Lord. After witnessing the plagues on Egypt, the columns of cloud and fire, and the Red Sea's parting, it would have been no small thing for Israel to receive this sense of assurance.Exodus 16 – 1:12 .
