Leading Through the Impossible | Soul-Strengthened Leadership, Week 3 | Exodus 13:17-14:31

Trapped between the Red Sea and Pharaoh's army, the Israelites face a situation with no human way out. Pastor Tammy Melchien walks through Moses' response to this impossible moment, showing that soul-strengthened leaders don't hold steady because they have more answers — they hold steady because they've learned to trust a God who makes a way where there is no way. Tammy traces how that trust in Moses was formed long before the crisis hit, and introduces this week's Soul Practice, the Breath Prayer, a simple tool for drawing on trust in the middle of both ordinary and crisis moments. Scripture: Exodus 13:17-14:31. Week 3 of Soul-Strengthened Leadership.

That's the tension at the Red Sea, and it's why this teaching hits so close to home for anyone facing anxiety, conflict, financial pressure, or a decision that feels impossible. We walk through Exodus 13 to 15, starting with the surprising calm of Israel's departure and the detail that they carry Joseph's bones, a reminder that God keeps promises down to the smallest piece. From there, the story tightens: Pharaoh's elite chariots pursue, God leads his people into what looks like a dead end, and the emotional spiral kicks in fast: fear, blame, despair. We connect that pattern to the way we talk when we panic, how we seek help everywhere except the right place, and how doubt grows when we keep repeating worst-case stories out loud.At the center is Moses' clear fourfold exhortation for crisis moments: do not fear, stand still, watch for the Lord's salvation, and keep quiet while the Lord fights for you. Then we track the miracle itself with fresh eyes: the protective pillar, the strong east wind, the divided sea, and the collapse of Egypt's pursuit. The big takeaway is simple but challenging: God sometimes leads us into difficulty to develop trust, and when he comes through, the only honest response is worship and praise. If you're standing on the bank of your own Red Sea, press play and take these steps with us. God faithfully led Israel through the wilderness by the pillar of cloud and fire, demonstrating that His way, even when it is longer, is always wiser than the shortcuts we would choose. Today, God continues to guide His people through the Holy Spirit, His Word, and the call to faithful obedience. As we trust His leading rather than our own understanding, we are transformed into the likeness of Christ and protected from the dangers of following our own desires.

God used rituals to remind Israel that He had freed them, made them His people, and pointed them toward the coming redemption in Jesus Christ. In doing so, He shaped Israel's identity, passed down a reminder of God's faithfulness to future generations, and emphasized that salvation is experienced within a community of believers. Today, believers continue this through Sabbath, communion, and gathering together, trusting God's provision and remembering Christ's finished work.

In the opening message of Unlikely Heroes, Pastor Matthew looks at Moses and the parting of the Red Sea to remind us that God uses ordinary people surrendered to an extraordinary God to do impossible things. Moses did not feel qualified, courageous, or ready, yet God chose him to lead Israel out of slavery and into freedom.Through Exodus 13 and 14, we see that God does not always lead us by the easiest or shortest road. Sometimes He leads us to places where only He can save us, so we can learn to trust Him completely. The Red Sea was not just Israel's moment of crisis. It was a place where God revealed His power, delivered His people, and showed Egypt that He alone is Lord. This message reminds us that the ultimate deliverance has already come through Jesus Christ. Because of Him, we have crossed over from death to life. Now the question is whether we will live like people who are free, trust God with what is in front of us, and say yes when He asks us to take a step of obedience.

13.1 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Consecrate to me all the firstborn. Whatever is the first to open the womb among the people of Israel, both of man and of beast, is mine.”3 Then Moses said to the people, “Remember this day in which you came out from Egypt, out of the house of slavery, for by a strong hand the Lord brought you out from this place. No leavened bread shall be eaten. 4 Today, in the month of Abib, you are going out. 5 And when the Lord brings you into the land of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, which he swore to your fathers to give you, a land flowing with milk and honey, you shall keep this service in this month. 6 Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, and on the seventh day there shall be a feast to the Lord.7 Unleavened bread shall be eaten for seven days; no leavened bread shall be seen with you, and no leaven shall be seen with you in all your territory. 8 You shall tell your son on that day, ‘It is because of what the Lord did for me when I came out of Egypt.' 9 And it shall be to you as a sign on your hand and as a memorial between your eyes, that the law of the Lord may be in your mouth. For with a strong hand the Lord has brought you out of Egypt. 10 You shall therefore keep this statute at its appointed time from year to year.11 “When the Lord brings you into the land of the Canaanites, as he swore to you and your fathers, and shall give it to you, 12 you shall set apart to the Lord all that first opens the womb. All the firstborn of your animals that are males shall be the Lord's. 13 Every firstborn of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb, or if you will not redeem it you shall break its neck. Every firstborn of man among your sons you shall redeem. 14 And when in time to come your son asks you, ‘What does this mean?' you shall say to him, ‘By a strong hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt, from the house of slavery. 15 For when Pharaoh stubbornly refused to let us go, the Lord killed all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both the firstborn of man and the firstborn of animals. Therefore I sacrifice to the Lord all the males that first open the womb, but all the firstborn of my sons I redeem.' 16 It shall be as a mark on your hand or frontlets between your eyes, for by a strong hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt.”

Pillars of Cloud and Fire17 When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them by way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near. For God said, “Lest the people change their minds when they see war and return to Egypt.” 18 But God led the people around by the way of the wilderness toward the Red Sea. And the people of Israel went up out of the land of Egypt equipped for battle. 19 Moses took the bones of Joseph with him, for Joseph[a] had made the sons of Israel solemnly swear, saying, “God will surely visit you, and you shall carry up my bones with you from here.” 20 And they moved on from Succoth and encamped at Etham, on the edge of the wilderness. 21 And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead them along the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, that they might travel by day and by night. 22 The pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night did not depart from before the people.Crossing the Red Sea14.1 Then the Lord said to Moses, 2 “Tell the people of Israel to turn back and encamp in front of Pi-hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea, in front of Baal-zephon; you shall encamp facing it, by the sea.3 For Pharaoh will say of the people of Israel, ‘They are wandering in the land; the wilderness has shut them in.' 4 And I will harden Pharaoh's heart, and he will pursue them, and I will get glory over Pharaoh and all his host, and the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord.” And they did so.5 When the king of Egypt was told that the people had fled, the mind of Pharaoh and his servants was changed toward the people, and they said, “What is this we have done, that we have let Israel go from serving us?” 6 So he made ready his chariot and took his army with him, 7 and took six hundred chosen chariots and all the other chariots of Egypt with officers over all of them. 8 And the Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he pursued the people of Israel while the people of Israel were going out defiantly. 9 The Egyptians pursued them, all Pharaoh's horses and chariots and his horsemen and his army, and overtook them encamped at the sea, by Pi-hahiroth, in front of Baal-zephon.10 When Pharaoh drew near, the people of Israel lifted up their eyes, and behold, the Egyptians were marching after them, and they feared greatly. And the people of Israel cried out to the Lord. 11 They said to Moses, “Is it because there are no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness? What have you done to us in bringing us out of Egypt? 12 Is not this what we said to you in Egypt: ‘Leave us alone that we may serve the Egyptians'? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.”

On Easter Sunday, Pastor Jared Richard delivered a powerful message to Bayleaf Church using Exodus 14 and the story of Israel crossing the Red Sea to illustrate the meaning of salvation through Christ's resurrection. He explained that many people celebrate Easter without fully understanding what it means to be "saved," so he used this Old Testament narrative as a divinely orchestrated picture to help answer that question. The central theme was that "God has allowed us to cross over by passing through" - meaning we've been saved from the power of sin by crossing over, and saved from the penalty of sin by passing through death in Christ. Pastor Jared drew parallels between Israel's situation and our spiritual condition. Just as the Israelites were enslaved in Egypt under Pharaoh's cruel power, we were enslaved to sin, death, and Satan. Just as Israel needed to get not only out of Egypt but beyond Pharaoh's reach, we needed deliverance from both sin's power and its penalty. The Red Sea represented the waters of judgment and death that Israel had to pass through to be truly free. Similarly, Jesus served as our greater mediator who didn't just part the waters like Moses, but willingly entered into God's judgment and death as our substitute, then rose victorious, bringing us through to the other side. Pastor Jared concluded by calling people to either receive this salvation through repentance and faith, or to rejoice in the freedom they already possess in Christ, emphasizing that there's no middle ground - we're either in spiritual Egypt or we're not. In the same way, when we are tempted to doubt God’s goodness in our lives, we can remember his faithfulness to us through the death and resurrection of Jesus.
