The next round of advancing worker power during the New Deal saw organized labor's allies in Congress successfully secure their right to organize. This week I'm reading from Steve Aspin and Andreas Lueck's book 'Investigating the Impossible: Biology Offers New Answers and Insights' Investigating the Impossible: biology offers new answers and Insights, co-written by author/investigator Steve Aspin and professional cellular biologist and geneticist Andreas Lück, PhD. The authors deploy the disciplines of cellular biology and genetics for a deep-dive investigation into mysterious cases where scientific data and recovered forensic artifacts exist for laboratory examination and analysis. Four separate, but related, subject areas are examined: 1 - The authenticity and provenance of the tridactyl Nazca mummies recovered in Peru in 2015, and the extensive testing carried out by C14 dating, CT and MRI scans, DNA & PCR sequencing and tissue sampling, detailing these scientific processes for the reader; 2 - The 'alien' hairs recovered from the Peter Khoury encounter in Sydney, Australia in July 1992, subsequently analyzed forensically by APEG and published by Bill Chalker in his 2005 book 'Hair of the Alien'; 3 - The possibility of whether hybridization between species originating from different biospheres as reported in thousands of alien abduction reports over 70 years might even be biologically possible; and - 4 - How to recognize and identify disinformation and misinformation about these subject areas in the unregulated morass of the online world. The book runs to 75,000 words in length and includes 80x images: photographs, diagrams, charts and illustrations of biological and genetic processes to assist the reader in better understanding the scientific content. Three Appendices, a brief Bibliography and detailed reference section of explanatory notes supplement the text. The authors have succeeded in making these often difficult scientific concepts, biological processes and descriptions of testing protocols into an engaging story. Furthermore, in attempting to explain these 'impossible' but provably real phenomena, some of their conclusions lead the reader beyond mainstream scientific consensus to explore realms entertained only by contemporary physics, mathematics and cosmology. In this essay, Roberta Cesana examines the relationship between anarchism and print culture through the figure of Leda Rafanelli (1880–1971). It shows how writing, printing, and publishing functioned as forms of self-construction, shaping Rafanelli's identity as a militant, an intellectual, and a professional. Roberta Cesana is Associate Professor of History of Bibliography, Books and Publishing at the University of Milan. She is President of Apice. Her recent work focuses on women's roles in editorial production and includes L'altra metà dell'editoria. Le professioniste del libro e della lettura nel Novecento (Ronzani, 2022) and Libri e rose. Season 9 is off to an exceptionally strong start with our recent discussion with Dr. Nicholas Freudenberg, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Public Health at the City University of New York (CUNY) School of Public Health. Dr. Freudenberg is Senior Faculty Fellow and co-founder of the CUNY Urban Food Policy Institute (www.cunyurbanfoodpolicy.org). He is a leading expert in Commercial Determinants of Health, authoring two key books in the field; At What Cost: Modern Capitalism and the Future of Health (Oxford, 2021) and Lethal but Legal: Corporations, Consumption, and Protecting Public Health (Oxford, 2014 and 2016). The term developed in the early 2000s, emerging from an earlier concept of Corporate Determinants of Health, recognizing that a small number of multinational global corporations dominate the world economy. Dr. Freudenberg explains that changing behavior of businesses and corporations can achieve public health gains at a much greater scale that traditional individual behavioral change approaches, citing successful policies regulating the tobacco industry and smaller gains changing the business opportunities to favor alternatives to the fossil fuel industry. One of the largest commercial determinants of health is the food industry, where there are multiple opportunities for change. It ends with three people dead, one clinging to life, and an entire nation asking how a dish that sounds like it belongs on MasterChef ended up in the Supreme Court. I take you inside the body and explain – in proper, story-ified fashion – what happens when you eat a death cap mushroom: The eerie, silent first hours, when your body acts like nothing's wrong while amatoxins quietly slip into your bloodstream. The fake food-poisoning phase – all vomiting and diarrhoea and “oh that's just a nasty bug” – while your liver is secretly being dismantled cell by cell. The false recovery, that cruel moment where the symptoms ease and you think you're on the mend… just as your liver throws in its resignation letter. And finally, the crash: jaundice, confusion, liver failure, the scramble for transplants and ICU care. It's dramatic, it's descriptive, and it's rooted in the real medical picture – because if we're going to be horrified, we may as well be accurately horrified. Inside the relationships and the almost-motive We also pull back from the plate and talk about the human mess behind it all: The long, complicated relationship between Erin and her ex, The money tensions, the child support drama, the messages that went from “family” to “lost cause” in record time, And how the courts actually handled motive – or rather, how they never truly nailed one down. I keep it respectful: we're not here to psychoanalyse a stranger's soul from our couches. But we do explore the emotional landscape that sat behind that lunch, because that's where the story really starts to ache. The sentence, the silence, and the questions We end in the courtroom: the verdicts, the life sentence, and the judge openly admitting that only she knows why. Then I leave you with the questions that linger: Is a murder with no clear motive creepier than one done for money? How much does “why” matter once “what” is already this bad? For most of western history queer, trans, and gender non-conforming people were excluded from such communities. Premodern trans experiences went largely unreported and reconstructing such histories relies on the piecing together of ephemeral glimpses. Literary scholars developed tactics and tools to read through the traces, with hugely generative results that highlight the richness of non-normative premodern genders. But how do we move beyond the limits of the trace to uncover a more expansive history of premodern gender non-conformity? In Trans Histories of the Medieval Book: An Experiment in Bibliography (Arc Humanities Press, 2025), J.D. Sargan takes a methodological approach to that question. Sargan explores how experiment in applying trans approaches to the study of the premodern book offers alternatives both for trans histories and for book historical methods. J. D. Sargan is a book historian. He was educated at Queen Mary University of London and the University of Oxford. He is an Assistant Professor in the Department of English at the University of Georgia and teaches a course in Queer Bibliographies for California Rare Book School. The final six months leading up to the Spanish Civil War kicked off with the electoral triumph of that nation's Popular Front coalition. But this time around the Reactionary element of Spain was not about to give the new government even the opportunity of governing. The first two years of the Second Spanish Republic were marked by a great burst of reformist energy after years of stagnation. Can a story about soldiers shaking hands in the snow carry a warning for the nuclear age? Melvyn Bragg and guests explore typology, a method of biblical interpretation that aims to meaningfully link people, places, and events in the Hebrew Bible, what Christians call the Old Testament, with the coming of Christ in the New Testament. Old Testament figures like Moses, Jonah, and King David were regarded by Christians as being ‘types' or symbols of Jesus. This way of thinking became hugely popular in medieval Europe, Renaissance England and Victorian Britain, as Christians sought to make sense of their Jewish inheritance - sometimes rejecting that inheritance with antisemitic fervour.
