    Ivy Insights

The Spacemakers podcast is a remarkable platform for individuals who have experienced the International Church of Christ (ICOC) movement to share their stories, concerns, and hopes for change. As someone who grew up in the ICOC but decided to leave with my family due to these very reasons, I find myself encouraged by the perseverance and courage demonstrated by the hosts. It is refreshing to see that there are people actively seeking to bring about change within the ICOC, even if there is doubt as to whether the necessary changes will be made. The episodes of this podcast have the potential to spark curious and empathetic conversations, paving the way for lasting change.

One of the best aspects of The Spacemakers podcast is its ability to validate and amplify voices that have often been silenced within the ICOC. The hosts speak up about topics that many have been shut down for even mentioning, creating a space where individuals can freely express their thoughts and feelings without fear of judgment or retribution. This validation has had a profound impact on listeners like myself, as it reaffirms our experiences and opens up opportunities for healing and growth.

Furthermore, The Spacemakers strike a delicate balance between sharing hard truths about their own experiences within the ICOC while also seeking potential areas for growth and connection within faith communities. They do not set out to criticize but instead navigate through the tension between successes and areas in need of improvement. This balanced approach allows for meaningful discussions that bridge intergenerational gaps and explores diverse perspectives both within and outside of the church.

While it is difficult to pinpoint any specific worst aspects of this podcast, it would be valuable to see more representation from different generations within the ICOC movement. While they do discuss bridging intergenerational gaps, having a wider range of perspectives could further enrich these conversations. Additionally, it would be beneficial if they were able to explore potential solutions or strategies for bringing about change within the ICOC, rather than solely discussing the issues themselves. These suggestions are offered with the understanding that change is a complex process influenced by many factors.

In conclusion, I am incredibly grateful to The Spacemakers for their courage and vulnerability in creating this podcast. As a long-time member of the ICOC, their discussions resonate deeply with me and have sparked important conversations within my family. They exemplify emotional and spiritual intelligence, demonstrating the potential for growth and learning within faith communities. I eagerly await future episodes and hope that this podcast continues to inspire open dialogue and promote understanding among all listeners.

Kicking off our Kingdom Kid Experience series, we invited a few of our friends who, generally, had a really good experience growing up in our group of churches to have a conversation about our varied experiences. We have Mari Sawamura (Boston), Mark Llorens (North Virginia), Nick Ragan (Dallas/Denver) and Alisa Krater (Germany). This first part is a discussion about what we all loved about our childhoods in church, as well as starting to dive in to what we didn't love.  Listen to Part 2 to hear the Spacemakers describe their experiences, diving deeper into what makes being a “Kingdom Kid” easy or hard.

A conversation among the Spacemakers discussing the importance of taking racial diversity further into true inclusion and what that looks like. Is there a difference between diversity and inclusion?  Discussion questions:     ⁃    Does my immediate circle look and think just like me?      ⁃    Who do the people I respect and follow look like?      ⁃    Does my church or community reflect the demographics of my area in race, economic status, or age? Why or why not?     ⁃    Is there a demographic that I actively avoid? Why?     ⁃    Do different types of people feel comfortable talking to me? Why or why not?
