There is a phrase I have heard, in various forms, from many of my clients over the years:"If her name was Brian instead of Barb, the recognition and response would have been completely different."That phrase is the whole problem, distilled into one sentence. This solo episode is for two audiences at once. The first is every woman who has experienced family violence or post-separation abuse perpetrated by a female partner - and who has watched as professionals, police, and even community bystanders failed to recognise what was being done to her.  If that is you, I want you to know I see what happened. The pattern is real. The response was inadequate. And it was not because your experience didn't matter - it was because the system we have built to recognise family violence is built on a gendered template, and when neither party fits that template, the template fails. The second is the post-separation professionals - lawyers, mediators, family report writers, Independent Children's Lawyers, police - who handle these cases without realising how much they are missing. The bias is correctable and this episode is a direct invitation to do better. In this episode I unpack what the research actually shows about intimate partner violence in lesbian relationships, why minimisation happens so consistently across professional and community contexts, the specific dynamics of stalking and coercive control when both parties are women, and what naming abuse honestly does - and does not - mean for the broader LGBTQIA+ community.Content note: This episode discusses family violence, post-separation abuse, coercive control, and stalking, including the specific ways these are minimised in lesbian relationships. If you need support: 1800RESPECT 1800 737 732 (24/7 family violence and sexual assault support, available across Australia) | QLife 1800 184 527 (LGBTQI+ peer support).Explore the supports offered by Danielle Black CoachingThe Post-Separation Parenting Blueprint™

It is no secret that marriage rates in the United States are at an all-time low. Despite this significant decline, the institution of marriage endures in our society amid historic changes to its meaning and practice. How does the continuing strength of marriage impact the relationships of same-sex couples after the legalization of same-sex marriage? Drawing on over one hundred interviews with LGBTQ+ people, Marriage Material: How an Enduring Institution Is Changing Same-Sex Relationships (University of Chicago Press, 2024) reveals the transformative impact marriage equality has had on same-sex relationships. Sociologist Dr. Abigail Ocobock looks to same-sex couples across a wide age range to illuminate the complex ways institutional mechanisms work in tandem to govern the choices and behaviors of individuals with different marriage experiences. Dr. Ocobock examines both the influence of marriage on the dynamics of same-sex relationships and how LGBTQ+ people challenge heteronormative assumptions about marriage, highlighting the complex interplay between institutional constraint and individual agency. Marriage Material presents a bold challenge to dominant scholarly and popular ideas about the decline of marriage, making clear that gaining access to legal marriage has transformed same-sex relationships, both for better and for worse. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. This lecture discusses key ideas from the Utilitarian philosopher, Jeremy Bentham's work, Offenses Against Oneself, a posthumously published part of his Introduction to the Principles of Morals and Legislation. Here we examine some of the problems that arise out of punishing same-sex relationships using what Bentham calls the "political sanction", i.e. legislation and enforcement.. One of these, which Bentham thinks is a rather weak argument, is that this tends to make more people aware of the perceived offense and give them the idea that it must be pleasurable, since it is being punished. He also raises the likelihood of false or malicious prosecutions, which require only that someone make claims to have seen two men together, and views this as a significant problem. A third problem is that this also makes men liable to extortion or blackmail. Episode 341 "The best minds of my generation are thinking about how to make people click ads. That sucks." A compelling quote that sums up the thesis of Rutger Bregman's new book. In Moral Ambition, the Dutch historian and the best-selling author argues that smart people need to stop wasting their lives in “BS” jobs - and turn their skills to causes that benefit humanity. By reflecting on the history of the abolitionist and women's rights movements, he explains why it's never too late to take action on major issues - like climate change or the exploitation of animals. He also explores how AI experts are preparing for a massive shift in the way we live, that we need to pay attention to. Same-sex sexual behaviour in primates is incredibly common - despite seemingly having no evolutionary advantage. But scientists have now noticed something counterintuitive. This behaviour happens more often in high-stress environments, where food is scarce, suggesting it may aid with social cohesion. It may even improve the success of straight sex - increasing the number of offspring in a group. If you want to live a longer, healthier life - it may be way easier than you think. Most modern longevity advice is about optimising every aspect of your life - and can feel overwhelming for many people. But a new study shows you can add a full year to your life, just by making very minor tweaks to things like sleep and exercise. Find out how. For three years in a row, average global temperatures have exceeded 1.5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial temperatures. As we fail to get a handle on rising global heating, scientists are exploring a new - slightly odd - way of managing carbon levels. The idea is to protect Earth's climate from future wildfires, but cutting down vast swathes of forest and sinking the trees in the Arctic ocean. But will it work - or make things worse? We have seen an extraordinary change in attitudes towards gay and lesbian people over the last half century in the West. Within living memory, homosexuality was criminalised. Now, same-sex couples can get married and share custody of children. This is nothing short of a moral revolution. Plenty of progressives think, not only that this change was inevitable, but also that further liberalisation is inevitable. My guests today are not so sure. They note that, for the first time in a long time, younger people on average are less accepting of homosexuality than are slightly older people. Perhaps this is a result of immigration patterns. Perhaps it's a result of strategic errors made by activists. I'm joined by three people who all agree that something has gone wrong, although they disagree – subtly – on exactly how and why. Ronan McCrea is professor of constitutional and European law at University College London and the author of 'The End of the Gay Rights Revolution: How Hubris and Overreach Threaten Gay Freedom.' Matthew Vines the the Founder and Executive Director of The Reformation Project and the author of 'God and the Gay Christian: The Biblical Case in Support of Same-Sex Relationships.'And Julie Bindel is a journalist, broadcaster, author, and the co-founder and co-director of The Lesbian Project. All of these guests share a concern that the wins of the gay rights movement are very fragile. There is a very real possibility that we will look back on the early twenty-first century as an historical blip – a brief moment of victory that was squandered. We ask how that fate might be avoided. Discussed in the show: 'The End of the Gay Rights Revolution: How Hubris and Overreach Threaten Gay Freedom''God and the Gay Christian: The Biblical Case in Support of Same-Sex Relationships' 'Lesbians: Where are we now?' Send us a textFor far too many LGBTQ+ people, religion has been used as a weapon–a source of shame, exclusion, and deep spiritual wounds. Many have been told they are “incompatible with scripture,” and some have left their faith communities altogether just to protect their own well-being. Today In the Den, Sara sits down with Reformation Project founder Matthew Vines, who offers an invitation to re-read the Bible with fresh eyes, to separate tradition from truth, and to imagine a church where everyone is welcomed without condition.Special Guest: Matthew VinesMatthew Vines is the Founder and Executive Director of The Reformation Project and the author of God and the Gay Christian: The Biblical Case in Support of Same-Sex Relationships. He lives in Dallas, Texas. Matthew attended Harvard University from 2008 to 2010. He then took a leave of absence in order to research the Bible and same-sex relationships. In March 2012, Matthew gave a speech at a church in his hometown of Wichita, Kansas, about the Bible and same-sex relationships, calling for acceptance of gay Christians and their marriage relationships. The video of the speech was viewed more than a million times on YouTube, leading to a feature story in The New York Times that fall. In 2013, Matthew launched The Reformation Project, a Bible-based, Christian non-profit organization that works to advance an orthodox and affirming vision for the church while remaining grounded in a love for God, a love for the Bible, and a love for the church. The Reformation Project hosts a variety of events, including a conference, a Parents in Process group, a Pastors in Process group, and leadership training cohorts.Links from the Show:God and the Gay Christian: https://bookshop.org/p/books/god-and-the-gay-christian-the-biblical-case-in-support-of-same-sex-relationships-matthew-vines/6425211?ean=9781601425188&next=t  Find more about Matthew here: https://matthewvines.com/about/Matthew's speech on gay Christians: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezQjNJUSraY The Reformation Project: http://www.reformationproject.org/ New York Times article on Matthew's speech: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/16/fashion/matthew-vines-wont-rest-in-defending-gay-christians.html Join Mama Dragons here: www.mamadragons.orgIn the Den is made possible by generous donors like you. Has the Church been clinging to outdated standards regarding those in the gay and lesbian community? Or have Christians gone too far in accepting and affirming these lifestyles? In this program, Chip interviews prominent author and apologist Rebecca McLaughlin about this topic. They discuss some of the popular claims society makes about Scripture and sexuality against what the Bible actually says.Main Points Introduction and Work: Rebecca McLaughlin is a best-selling author and PhD from Cambridge, known for her work on apologetics and controversial Church issues. Her latest book is Does the Bible Affirm Same-Sex Relationships? Faith Journey and Challenges: Grew up in a church-going family in London and has been a follower of Jesus since childhood. Faced challenges to her Christian beliefs during her academic journey, especially on sexual ethics. Experienced same-sex attraction from an early age, openly discussed in her mid-thirties. Biblical Perspective and Sexual Ethics: Argues the Bible does not support same-sex sexual relationships, linking marriage and sexuality to the gospel message. Emphasizes the importance of addressing sexual ethics for understanding Christian teachings. Points out the New Testament's serious stance on sexual immorality and the symbolic nature of marriage in the Bible. Countering Common Claims: Rebecca argues that the Bible offers an inclusive vision of love among believers, distinct from romantic or sexual love. She contrasts the emotional appeal of same-sex relationships with the biblical command for non-sexual, brotherly/sisterly love. Christian Love and Relationships: Emphasizes that Christian love is deeply committed and inclusive, but not sexual. Highlights the significance of Christian fellowship as a fulfilling relational aspect of faith. Understanding Biblical Sexual Ethics: Counters the belief that the Bible only prohibits exploitative relationships by examining biblical language and context. Explains that Paul's terminology and cultural context indicate a broad condemnation of same-sex relationships, not limited to exploitative ones. Understanding Romans 1 and Gospel Integration: Romans 1 highlights various sins, including same-sex relationships, to show the universal need for Jesus and redemption. Biblical texts condemning same-sex relations often emphasize redemption and grace, as seen in Paul's letters. Christian Humility and Jesus' Teachings: Christians should approach discussions on sin with humility, recognizing everyone's need for redemption. Jesus' teachings on sexual ethics focus on deeper heart issues and the need for a savior, not just moral compliance. God's Boundaries and Fulfillment: God's commands, even if restrictive, are for our good and lead to deeper fulfillment. Staying true to God's Word may bring short-term discomfort but results in long-term joy and benefits. Marriage and Ultimate Fulfillment: Marriage is valuable but not the ultimate source of fulfillment. True satisfaction comes from a relationship with Jesus, offering a love beyond human capacity. Addressing Same-Sex Attraction and Identity: Same-sex attraction does not define one's identity or indicate a fixed orientation. Encourages open dialogue and understanding, distinguishing between attraction and identity. Supporting Those with Same-Sex Attractions: Seek supportive Christian friends who uphold biblical truth and offer genuine love. True friendship involves helping each other adhere to God's Word, not compromising for comfort. What does the New Testament say about same-sex relationships? Three of the so-called "clobber passages" are found in Paul. These are 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, 1 Timothy 1:9-11, and Romans 1:26-27. This is not a full scale study of those passages but rather a reflection of how they have been used to exclude 2SLGBTQIA+ people and whether that is consistent. You may have heard the claim that the Bible, when read correctly, is not against believers entering monogamous, faithful same-sex relationships. The arguments sound quite compelling. "Jesus never talked about same-sex relationships.” “Paul was only condemning exploitative relationships, not consensual ones.” “We don’t keep the Old Testament food laws, so why would we keep the ones on same-sex sex?” “If God is love, he can’t be against relationships of love.” And more. Have Christians through the ages just been getting this one wrong? Our guest will look at some of the most common arguments used to claim that the Bible affirms same-sex sex relationships. She will analyze the arguments and associated Bible passages to uncover what the Bible really says. For our guest, as someone with a lifelong history of same-sex attraction, this is not just an academic question. But rather than concluding that the Bible does affirm same-sex marriage, she will point us to the purpose of male-female marriage, a different kind of gospel-centered love between believers of the same sex, and God's life-and-love-filled vision for singleness.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This often leads to difficult decisions regarding separation and the potential for custody disputes over children.
