In this episode of the Story Engine Podcast, I sit down with Carolee Moore, an expert storyteller who helps corporate leaders and subject matter experts find their voice, get on the right podcasts, and turn their visibility into real business growth. What stood out to me most is how Carolee doesn't just focus on booking interviews—she helps people reconnect with their authentic voice after years of operating inside corporate expectations. We explore how storytelling, when done right, becomes the bridge between deep expertise and real influence. Carolee shares her journey from growing up in Jamaica surrounded by storytelling, to navigating corporate America, to building (and walking away from) a successful marketing agency that no longer aligned with her. We also dive into how podcast guesting can fast-track credibility in B2B spaces, why so many experts struggle with visibility despite their experience, and how finding your voice can literally "change the vote" in the rooms that matter most. If you've ever felt unseen, under-recognized, or stuck playing small—this conversation will show you a new path forward. 00:49 – From Jamaica to the U.S.: The Roots of a Storyteller 02:09 – Corporate Life, Structure, and Suppressed Creativity 03:30 – Building (and Closing) a Multi-Six-Figure Agency 04:24 – The Pivot: From Marketing to Podcast Guesting 05:31 – The Types of Experts She Works With 07:41 – Why Podcasting Works for High-Level Experts 09:00 – Turning Stories Into Credibility and Sales 11:14 – The Hidden Struggles of High-Achieving Experts 12:46 – Watching Less Experienced People Win (and Why It Hurts) 14:08 – The Real Transformation: Finding Your Authentic Voice 16:46 – Integrating Visibility With Sales and Business Strategy 17:23 – The Boardroom Moment That Changed Everything 19:00 – Speaking Up and Changing the Vote 20:58 – Learning to Own Your Voice 21:39 – Underpricing and Positioning Lessons as an Agency Owner 22:46 – A Major Win: Earning a Year's Salary in One Day 23:30 – Learning to Celebrate and Step Away 24:44 – The Story Reflection: From Silence to Impact

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 15, 2026 36:45

So, our Natural Order Of Things mini series continues...Almost everyone does this... they have an idea for a business on Monday and they're trying to market it by Tuesday, having sailed right past the four layers that would have made the marketing actually work. And then they wonder why nobody's listening. This week we're on layer five: Speaking Up. The marketing layer. And I won't let you near it until the layers before it are solid, because marketing built on shaky foundations is basically just shouting. Most marketing advice was never written for businesses like ours. It was written for the ones optimising for volume, virality and the algorithm, where the offer is interchangeable and the only goal is to be seen by more people than the competition. That isn't us. We're building something quieter and far more durable, and it's built on trust. So this episode is about marketing the way it should actually feel for a soul-led business. Knowing your people so well you could finish their sentences. Choosing one or two platforms and showing up there fully, instead of repurposing yourself into the ground across six. And understanding the four phases every bit of marketing has to move through, whatever channel you happen to love: visibility, lead generation, nurture, and the honest invitation to work with you.I also get into consistency, which is easily the most misunderstood word in marketing. It is not posting every day. It is not punishing yourself for sending the email on a Wednesday instead of a Tuesday. It's showing up reliably and recognisably as you, for long enough that people trust you're not about to vanish on them. I've been doing this podcast for four years. The first year brought me virtually no business at all. Marketing works, but it asks you to back yourself and then give it long enough to prove you right.Next week, layer six: Honest Invitation. The sales layer. Because once the right people are raising their hands, the only question left is whether you can invite them in clearly and warmly, without it ever feeling like they're being sold at.Mentioned in this episodeThe Natural Order of Things, the book. Gustavo Razzetti once sat next to a woman at a corporate conference, judging the regional VP presenting on stage until she revealed that was her husband. Instead of backpedaling he apologised, then stood by every word. That instinct of owning the mess without pretending he didn't mean it is the backbone of his work.He has spent decades inside corporate and agency life watching great ideas die because of terrible culture. He now works with teams on what he calls conversational debt: the gap between what people nod through in meetings and what they actually act on. His research found that when people are asked why others don't speak up, the answer is fear, but when asked why they themselves don't, the answer becomes pointlessness: a learned belief that nothing will change anyway.Gustavo refuses to live that way. He fires clients before the work even starts if the fit is wrong. His rule is that he'd rather lose his job over one conversation than avoid a hundred — and he did.We talked about the power dynamics that shape what is considered professionalism, the most dangerous type of silence in organisations and why we should all drop the invisible contract nobody handed us and stop waiting for permission to speak.Links to learn more about Gustavo Razzetti:Forward Talk (Gustavo's new book)WebsiteSubstackWorkshopsAny thoughts? Kate Lowry was fresh out of college and working at McKinsey when she saw a colleague do something she believed was seriously wrong -- something that could constitute blackmail, with another employee's ability to stay in the country hanging in the balance. Her instinct was immediate and absolute: this is wrong, and I'm going to tell everyone. She reported it and criticized the person sharply in reviews. Episode page for video, links, and more It backfired. She got marked down for not being a "team player" and carried that mark on her record for the rest of her time at the firm. The lesson Kate draws isn't that she should have stayed silent. It's that good intentions and zeal are not the same as effective action. The best ways to help people, she found, are often more sophisticated -- and when you're up against sophisticated actors who hold power over you, you need to bring equal sophistication. Kate is a CEO coach, venture capitalist, and author of Unbreakable: How to Thrive Under Fear-Based Leaders. In this episode, she and host Mark Graban get into the difference between high standards and fear-based leadership, why psychological safety is about mutual trust rather than comfort, and how the quiet, "West Coast nice" version of fear-based leadership is harder to spot than the cartoonish yelling kind. Kate also explains her concept of reading a leader's "emotional age" to predict their behavior, and offers practical tactics for anyone stuck under a leader who rules through fear.

Send us Fan MailIn this episode of Marketing Espresso, I'm joined by media trainer, author and communication expert Theresa Miller for a conversation that feels incredibly relevant right now.We dive into why speaking up matters more than ever in a world filled with AI-generated content, misinformation and constant noise online. Theresa's book, Speak Up: How to Be a Successful Presenter and Media Spokesperson, explores how people across every industry can communicate more clearly, confidently and effectively - whether that's on stage, in the media, online or inside their workplace. One of the biggest themes throughout this episode is the idea that if people with genuine experience and expertise stay quiet, less qualified voices fill the space. We unpack why so many people hesitate to speak publicly, share opinions or put themselves forward, even when they have years of valuable lived experience behind them.We also talk about: Why public speaking is still one of people's biggest fears  How imposter syndrome stops experts from sharing what they know  Why audiences are craving real human connection again  The rise of AI content and declining trust online  Why in-person events and conversations are becoming more valuable  How to communicate clearly without relying on jargon  Media training and communication tips for business owners  Why understanding your audience changes everything  The importance of intentional communication and storytelling Theresa shares practical communication frameworks that can help anyone become a stronger speaker and communicator, including how to structure your ideas clearly, how to make your message memorable, and why “what's in it for me?” is the question every audience is subconsciously asking. One part of this conversation I particularly loved was Theresa's perspective on communication as service. Instead of focusing on ourselves and worrying about judgement or criticism, she encourages people to think about how their knowledge, stories or experience could genuinely help someone else.We also explore how communication impacts marketing, leadership and business visibility. In a world where AI is making generic content easier than ever to create, authentic communication and real expertise are becoming even more valuable. This episode is packed with practical insights for business owners, marketers, leaders, creatives and anyone wanting to communicate with more clarity and confidence. If you've ever struggled with visibility, public speaking, confidence or sharing your expertise online, I think you'll get a lot from this conversation. You can find Theresa's book Speak Up online, in bookstores, on Audible and via her website.Resources & Links from Theresa Miller: Theresa's book and audiobook: Speak Up – Book & Audiobook Theresa's online course: Online Media & Presentation Course Ten tips to nail your media interview: Media Interview Tips Eight attention-grabbing presentation openers: Presentation Openers Guide Connect with Theresa on LinkedIn Follow Theresa on Instagram Find Theresa on DOWNLOAD MY CONTENT PLANNERInstagram @bec_chappellLinkedIn – Bec Chappell If you're ready to work together, I'm ready to work with you and your team. How to work with me:1. Since becoming first lady, Bio has transformed the role in Sierra Leone, campaigning publicly on issues including child marriage, sexual violence and period poverty. To supporters, she is a refreshing voice in politics, who speaks up for women and girls, while others say she has overstepped her remit and that she is too vocal and too involved in the running of her husband's party. Today, I interview Andrea Horvath who struggled to speak up for most of her life due to a fear that using her voice would lead to rejection. She followed expectations, stayed quiet, and avoided conflict, which affected her confidence and ability to express herself.Raised in a strict environment, Andrea learned that questioning the norm could mean being labeled “crazy” and risking connection. She built a stable life with a CPA career and family, but kept her thoughts and voice suppressed for years. When her daughter showed signs something was wrong, her concerns were dismissed. Instead of staying silent, she spent nearly two years seeking answers, choosing to trust her intuition and speak up despite the discomfort.Today, Andrea helps leaders reconnect with their voice and build confidence in how they show up, focusing on self-trust and grounded self-expression in their speaking and leadership.__________________Andrea is a high-performance mentor for corporate leaders and executives seeking measurable and meaningful growth fueled by alignment. For more than two decades, she rose as a CPA and leader in corporate, driving performance at the highest level while learning how to achieve without compromise and hold both success and peace at once.Today, she mentors high-performing, awakened leaders to reach the next level of success in their careers and life from a place of deep alignment and inner authority. Her work combines energetic alignment and strategy to support leaders in elevating their leadership and stepping into greater opportunities. She is also a speaker who works with organizations and teams ready to lead and perform at a higher level without abandoning who they are.__________________Find Andrea here:https://www.linkedin.com/in/andreamhorvath/ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC7-V0tlhCwHkNED3kD1G0KAhttps://www.andreahorvath.com/titlepaypeaceform Support the showI'm Dr. Doreen Downing and I help people find their voice so they can speak without fear. What if the thing holding you back isn't a lack of expertise, but the fact that your voice hasn't caught up to what you know?In this episode, Steve Mellor sits down with Dr. Leslie Gordon, a speech, voice, and accent expert who helps high-performing professionals speak with more confidence, presence, and impact. Leslie introduces the idea of the “growing edge,” a powerful replacement for the word “weakness,” and explains why real growth requires more than mindset. It requires action, repetition, awareness, and the willingness to step into unfamiliar territory. This conversation is for anyone who has ever left a meeting thinking, “I should have said something,” or who knows they have something valuable to contribute but struggles to make their voice match their expertise. Why “growing edge” is more useful than calling something a weakness  Why high performers struggle to speak up, even when they know their stuff  How self-evaluation can help growth or quietly block it  How to work with the inner critic using Leslie's “name it to tame it” strategy  Why presence, breath, and body tension shape how your message lands  Why confidence is built through action, not simply something you either have or don't haveConnect with Dr. Leslie Gordon:Website: https://www.leslie.gordon.speech/lesliegordonspeech.comSend us Fan MailSupport the showConnect with Steve MellorStay connected and keep growing with Steve:LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/steve-mellor-cc/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/coachstevemellorBook Steve to speak at your next event → www.stevemellorspeaks.comSupport the GrowthReady Podcast by leaving a 5-star rating → Apple Podcasts - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/growthready-podcast/id1406082163Connect with GrowthReadyJoin the community and keep your growth journey going:LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/wearegrowthready/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/growthreadypodcast/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/growthreadywithcoachstevemellorOfficial Website - https://growthready.com/----This podcast was produced on Riverside and released via ...

Are you tired of feeling like you have to choose between keeping the peace and being true to yourself in your relationships? Many people mistake silence for harmony, stuffing down their true feelings for fear of conflict, only to wake up one day feeling unheard, unseen, and disconnected. But what if speaking up—being honest about your needs and setting boundaries—was actually the path to deeper connection and intimacy, not the source of division? In this episode, listeners are invited to rethink what it means to be authentic in close relationships, especially when it comes to sharing hard truths or setting limits. You'll hear insights on why self-assertion is not about ruining relationships, but about bringing your whole self into them. By exploring practical strategies, emotional tools, and real-life examples, this conversation guides you in overcoming the fear of rocking the boat—so you can communicate courageously and build relationships where both people feel truly known and valued. Tonya Lester, LCSW, is the author of Push Back: Live, Love, and Work with Others Without Losing Yourself. A Brooklyn-based psychotherapist and writer known for her work with relationships and communication, her essay "Couples Therapist, Heal Thyself" was published in the Modern Love column in The New York Times, and she has been writing the popular Staying Sane Inside Insanity blog for Psychology Today since 2020. She has been featured as an expert in The Guardian, Newsweek, Well+Good, HuffPost, Fatherly, and the Bumble site, The Buzz.   Episode Highlights 04:03 The link between speaking up, emotional intimacy, and common gendered roles. 07:18 Navigating differences: collaboration, needs, and the relationship as a system. 12:40 Embracing discomfort and staying present with unresolved issues. 13:53 The importance of vulnerability and framing difficult conversations safely. 17:02 Applying healthy pressure: strengthening or releasing relationships. 19:56 Recognizing the "shock absorber" role and its impact on self and intimacy. 23:10 Identifying "shock magnets": escalation, withdrawal, and unhealthy conflict cycles. 27:29 Communicating effectively with kindness. 30:38 Defining self-possession and its role in relational health. 32:49 Using internal signals and "weathervane" emotions for personal growth. 38:11 Building emotional maturity: self-compassion, timeouts, and ongoing practice. 40:38 Understanding and managing emotional activation. 42:42 Addressing hidden relationship dynamics and the importance of modeling boundaries. 48:21 Exploring possibilities: challenging feelings of being trapped and opening to choice. 51:41 Putting clarity into practice: actionable tools and lasting relationship change.   Your Checklist of Actions to Take Practice Soft Startups: Begin hard conversations with vulnerability and clarity about your intentions rather than leading with anger or accusation to lower defensiveness in your partner. Name Your Emotions: Before raising a difficult topic, identify and share your underlying emotions, such as fear, anxiety, or longing, to increase openness. Set Boundaries with Clarity: Clearly state what is not working for you in the relationship and propose specific changes, avoiding blame or generalizations. Tolerate Unresolved Issues: Accept that not every problem will have an immediate solution and practice tolerating the discomfort of ongoing, in-process conversations. Take Breaks When Activated: When conflict escalates, or emotions run high, pause the conversation and use activities like taking a walk or shower to regulate your nervous system before returning. Use "I" Statements: Use concise, direct language to express your needs and feelings without attacking or criticizing your partner. Reflect on the System: Regularly assess if both partners are contributing to the emotional work and call out patterns where efforts are imbalanced. Model Self-Possession: Take responsibility for your own happiness and choices, setting an example for both yourself and others—including children—about how to live in alignment with your values.   Mentioned Push Back: Live, Love, and Work with Others Without Losing Yourself (*Amazon Affiliate link) (book) About Tonya Lester (Psychology Today) Shifting Criticism For Connected Communication (Free guide) How Being "Difficult" Can Assist Growth & Development In Relationship (ERP 360)   Connect with Tonya Lester Website: tonyalester.com Facebook: facebook.com/tlynnlester/ Instagram: instagram.com/tonyalesterpsychotherapy LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/tonya-lester-b9a3ab14 TikTok: tiktok.com/@tonyalesterlcsw

That sounds supportive until you realize “safe” often looks like staying quiet in meetings, ghosting your own content calendar, and never asking for the raise, the support, or the clarity you actually need.We unpack what's really happening underneath resistance to showing up online and why it's the same pattern that plays out at work, in leadership, and in relationships. I break down the three most common reasons high-achieving women and creative entrepreneurs hold back: fear of the response, fear of risking the relationship, and fear of looking dumb. Then we get practical. When your mind jumps to the worst case scenario, I'll show you how to solve for it with one powerful question: “Then what?” You'll also hear a real story from my own career about asking for a raise after delivering major results and what I did next when I got the response I didn't expect. From there we move into mindset management and spiritual alignment that actually translates into action: visualizing the best case scenario, “mentally dressing” for the role you want, and cleaning up judgment so you stop negotiating with other people's opinions. Together they explore high-control communities, the weaponization of belonging, and the lasting impact these experiences can have on both kids and families. At its core, this conversation is about child safety and well-being. You know rest matters. You've read about it, heard about it, maybe even told someone else they needed more of it. And you're still exhausted. Not because you're doing it wrong. Not because you lack discipline or don't try hard enough. But because there's something standing between you and real rest that nobody is talking about — and it has nothing to do with your sleep hygiene or your meditation practice. For women with ADHD, the gap between knowing something and actually living it can feel impossibly wide. Especially when it comes to rest, nervous system regulation, and protecting your own time and energy. Executive function challenges, emotional overwhelm, and a nervous system wired for high alert make rest feel not just hard to access — but genuinely unsafe. This episode goes somewhere different. A few things worth knowing before you listen: — Rest isn't just about what happens after work. Sometimes it's upstream of everything else. — There's a version of helpfulness that's quietly draining you — and it feels exactly like being a good person. — The conversation you've been putting off? It might be the most restorative thing on your list. — Surviving a hard response is different than you think. Your nervous system has something to say about it. What's actually standing between you and protected space for rest — and why your ADHD brain makes it so much harder to see — is what this episode is really about. You might not see it coming. —CHAPTERS— 00:00 Why You Can't Rest 01:19 Podcast Welcome 01:56 The Missing Piece 03:33 Why We Don't Speak Up 05:07 RSD and Conflict Fear 06:17 A Story of Speaking Up 07:58 The Cost of Silence 09:02 Three Places Rest Gets Stolen 09:18 Stolen by Place #1 11:07 Stolen by Place #2 12:18 Stolen in Place #3 13:50 Create Space 14:34 The Walk After Truth 15:25 Rest Is Upstream 16:54 Practice Not Perfection 18:18 One Question to Carry 18:52 Closing and Thanks   ✨ If you found this episode helpful… Please follow, subscribe, and share it with another ADHD woman who needs support!

If you've been curious about what it looks like to say what you need to say in practice, today you'll hear from someone who found her outside voice and is using it to create the life she wants. Jessica Carlson has spent years serving others—as a pastor's wife, a mom, a teacher, and now supporting college students in getting the resources they need. Jessica and I first connected over our shared background in high-demand religion, and since we began working together, I've watched her life transform. She learned to speak up messily and imperfectly, and to support herself through hard conversations that once felt impossible. Jessica's journey is a powerful example of how everything can shift when women use their voices, not just for themselves, but for the kind of change they want to see in the world. Here's what we cover:What Jessica's life looked like when she first joined the Stop People Pleasing groupThe power that comes from realizing you get to choose the kind of discomfort you feel in relationshipsWhy the goal isn't always to say no, but to understand you have that option when you need itHow a simple step-by-step process helps you find the right words and practice speaking upJessica's journey of running for public office and the changes she has made by working on this skillJessica Carlson is a university career coach and former high school teacher. She lives in the midwest with her husband of 23 years and 2 children, both in college. She has a bachelor's in English and secondary education and a master's in education. She was raised in a fundamentalist high-demand religious context and then married a Christian pastor through which church experiences compounded the people pleasing she learned at an early age. At her core, she serves people but that service as a wife, mom, teacher, and community member caused her to lose herself. Jessica is a reflective thinker and someone who cares deeply about connection and meaning but has only recently realized that her voice matters and that it is powerful and she can impact systems. She is especially drawn to conversations about how we unlearn the pressure to be everything for everyone, and what it looks like to choose ourselves, sometimes for the first time.Find Jessica here:instagram.com/jess_c7072tiktok.com/@queenbee7072 Find Sara here:sarafisk.coachpages.sarafisk.coach/difficultconversationsinstagram.com/sarafiskcoachfacebook.com/SaraFiskCoachingtiktok.com/@sarafiskcoachyoutube.com/@sarafiskcoaching1333

Today, I interview Karen Rudolf who believed she wasn't enough and learned early on to stay quiet, especially after being told as a child to stop asking questions. That moment shaped how she saw herself. She became very quiet, carried that into her relationships, and continued to feel small and unheard into adulthood.Growing up, her curiosity was shut down, and with a mother who was also timid and a people pleaser, she learned not to speak up. She entered a relationship where her voice was again dismissed, reinforcing the belief that what she thought and felt did not matter.Everything began to shift when her life circumstances intensified. Going through a divorce while raising three daughters, facing health issues like hair loss and a pre-diabetes diagnosis, and even being told she might not walk again forced her to confront how she had been living. These moments pushed her to listen to herself and realize she could no longer stay silent. She began to speak up, ask for what she needed, and trust her intuition. Today, Karen uses her voice to help others uncover the root cause of their patterns and express who they truly are.__________________Karen Rudolf is the founder of Tranquil SOULutions™, where science meets soul to support high-performing, heart-led women and leaders shift out of survival mode and into grounded alignment. With a background in nursing and training in neuroscience-informed tools, somatic awareness, and trauma-release principles, she helps clients reconnect with their inner voice, regulate their nervous system, and lead from a place of embodied clarity.Karen is also the creator of the Tranquil SOULutions Mind Mosaic™ and The Butterfly Technique, practical and intuitive frameworks for decision-making and inner realignment. In this episode of The Way We See It, Pastor Alex Bryant speaks with his friend Derrick McBride about the biggest story in sports right now, the Chicago Bulls' decision to waive Jaden Ivey after his public comments criticizing the NBA's Pride Month messaging from his Christian convictions. (SB Nation) The move has sparked a much bigger conversation around faith, free expression, and what athletes are allowed to say in today's culture. Alex and Derrick dive into the cost of standing on conviction, the cultural pressures surrounding sports, and what this means moving forward. They also hit several other major sports headlines, including Tiger Woods' latest DUI incident, the madness of March Madness, and how NIL money and the transfer portal continue to reshape college athletics. This is a strong conversation on sports, culture, faith, and the price of speaking up. #TWWSI, #SportsAndCulture, #JadenIvey, #FaithInSports, #TigerWoods, #MarchMadness, #NIL, #TransferPortal, #FreeSpeech, #PastorAlexBryant Alex Bryant Ministries is focused on helping people be reconciled to God, then within one's own self, and finally being reconciled to our fellow man in order to become disciples. Dr. Biruete's research aims to study the effects of nutritional and pharmacological therapies for chronic kidney disease on the gastrointestinal tract and gut microbiome. Additionally, Dr. Biruete is interested in improving outcomes in the Hispanic/LatinX community living with chronic kidney disease, primarily targeting nutritional interventions using language- and culturally-concordant lifestyle educational materials. Melissa Tuff has been living with chronic kidney disease for 30 years. Her journey began in 1996 on her 17th birthday when she “crashed” into dialysis following a misdiagnosed UTI. She was on in-center hemodialysis for 9 and a half years until she received a life-changing kidney transplant that lasted 11 years. In 2016 her kidney rejected and since then, she continued treatment with 4 years of peritoneal dialysis and 6 years of solo home hemodialysis. She utilizes her Social Media pages for digital education & patient empowerment by hosting educational TikTok Live sessions while performing solo home hemodialysis; offering real-time insight into dialysis life and empowering others to take an active role in their treatment. Her goal is to build a support community and reduce the stigma around kidney disease by fostering open, educational, and uplifting conversations online while providing resources and guidance as to how one can live long and well on dialysis. Why do so many meetings feel like a waste of time? The same few voices dominate. Updates go in circles. And when the meeting ends, nobody is actually clear on what happens next. In this final episode of the Buy-In Blocker Series, leadership expert Dave Garrison breaks down the final leadership mistake that prevents teams from fully engaging: one-way communication. Many leaders assume they're communicating clearly simply because they're speaking. But when leaders respond to their interpretation of what others say instead of deeply listening, meetings become inefficient, teams feel unheard, and collaboration breaks down. Dave explains how something as simple as a single word can mean completely different things to different people and how these misunderstandings create confusion and disengagement across organizations. The good news? The solution is simple, immediate, and costs nothing. Dave shares a powerful framework leaders can implement instantly: mirror what you hear, ask clarifying questions, validate perspectives, and create real understanding. These small shifts turn meetings into spaces where trust grows and buy-in becomes possible. What You'll Learn In This Episode: Why one-way communication destroys buy-in inside teams The hidden reason most meetings feel unproductive Why leaders often respond to what they think they heard instead of what was actually said How misunderstanding simple words can create major organizational confusion The leadership skill that instantly improves communication and trust A simple listening framework to create better conversations and stronger teams   Key Takeaways: ✔️Listening is a leadership skill, not just a communication skill. ✔️Most leaders unintentionally create one-way communication in meetings. ✔️When leaders assume meaning instead of clarifying it, misunderstanding grows quickly. ✔️Mirroring what someone says helps ensure true understanding. ✔️Clarifying questions uncover the real meaning behind someone's message. ✔️Validation builds trust, even when you don't agree. ✔️Deep listening creates the psychological safety required for real buy-in.   Timestamps & Highlights: [00:00] – Introduction to the fourth Buy-In blocker: one-way communication [01:05] – Why meetings often feel like a waste of time [02:00] – The difference between speaking and truly communicating [03:00] – How simple words can mean different things to different people [04:15] – Why leaders often respond to their interpretation instead of reality [05:20] – How one-way communication turns meetings into debates [06:10] – The framework for authentic listening [07:05] – Mirroring what you hear to confirm understanding [08:00] – The power of clarifying questions and validation [09:00] – How deep listening builds trust and real buy-in Connect with Dave Garrison: Book: The Buy-In Advantage Website:GarrisonGrowth.com LinkedIn: Dave Garrison Email: engage@garrisongrowth.com Join the Leadership Sprint: DM “Leadership Sprint” to Dave on LinkedIn for exclusive access Your Challenge This Week: If this episode helped you see leadership communication in a new way, share it with another leader on your team. Allyson Felix has 11 Olympic medals, which makes her the most decorated American track and field athlete in history. But here's the thing—most people know her name because of what happened when she got pregnant. After nearly a decade with her sponsor Nike, they offered her a new contract at 70% less than her previous salary. And when she asked for one thing—protected time to recover from childbirth without performance penalties—they said they wouldn't set that precedent for all female athletes. So, Allyson sat in her daughter's NICU room, watched her tiny baby fighting to come home, and decided to risk everything by going public. In this second episode of our Women of Consequence series, Kelly talks with Allyson about integrity, knowing your worth, and understanding that sometimes you speak up not for yourself but so the next woman doesn't have to fight the same battle.
