Sarah Lewis's book The Unseen Truth: When Race Changed Sight in America examines America from the end of the Civil War to the beginning of Jim Crow when the country's conception of race, and whiteness, was transforming. A finalist for the 2025 Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards, Lewis uncovers a pivotal era when Americans came to ignore the truth about the false foundations of the nation's racial regime. Thanks to Professor Lewis's historical detective work, what we see and what's left unseen shapes everything we believe about ourselves and other people - and how we can start changing the narrative about who counts and who belongs in America.rnrnSarah Lewis is an award-winning art historian, founder of Vision & Justice, and the John L. Loeb Associate Professor of the Humanities and Associate Professor of African and African American Studies at Harvard University. She is also the author of the bestseller The Rise: Creativity, the Gift of Failure, and the Search for Mastery, as well as the forthcoming book Vision & Justice.

SEND US A MESSAGE! We'd Love to Chat With you and Hear your thoughts! We'll read them on the next episode.  In this thought-provoking episode, Brandon tackles a sensitive and timely question: Is America's Church RACIST? Brandon explores the complex and often controversial relationship between faith and race in the United States. From the legacy of slavery and segregation to modern-day biases and macroaggressions, we examine the ways in which racism has been perpetuated and perpetuates within Christian hearts. Have we justified hatred by hearkening back to the hatred that preceded it? Is the church truly a beacon of hope and unity, or has it failed to address its own complicity in modern, systemic racism? Listen in and share your thoughts in the comments. More than a century of civil rights activism reached a mountaintop with the arrival of a Black man in the Oval Office. But hopes for a unified, post-racial America were deflated when Barack Obama's presidency was met with furious opposition, and a volcanic new movement-a second civil rights movement-began to erupt.rnrnNew Prize for These Eyes is a follow up to his bestselling novel Eyes on the Prize, which accompanied the PBS series of the same name. In his new book, Williams outlines what fires, furies, and frustrations distinguish this 21st century movement from its predecessor and brilliantly traces the arc of this new civil rights era--from Obama to Charlottesville to January 6th.rnrnToday's movement is dealing with new realities. With demographic changes and a social media savvy generation, activists are making history in a new economic and cultural landscape. In an interview with Fox News, Williams said, "I hope that all Americans, all people in this country will be able to say after they read this book, 'Oh my gosh. I am a historic figure.' And see themselves as actors in this moment of creating American history."rnrnJuan Williams is a prizewinning journalist and historian and the author of numerous books. Williams worked for The Washington Post as a celebrated national political correspondent, White House correspondent, and editorial writer. He has written for The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The New Yorker, The Atlantic, and Ebony. He is currently the Senior Political Analyst for Fox News Channel and a columnist for The Hill.

Welcome to "On Meaning." Why is this considered rasicim, while large numbers of Asians in advanced math and science high schools, is?  Heather Mac Donald, author of the new book "When Race Trumps Merit." She asks challenging questions about what truly lies behind these issues. Is it in fact racism which leads to these disparities, or is there something else accuring? Are we putting too much emphasis on race and not enough on merit? How is this affecting our schools, jobs, police forces, and even our art, music, and culture? Most importantly, what will happen to our society if we continue down this path?Heather's book is bold and thought-provoking.  it may challenge what you thought you know about race and success in America.Join us today as we ask difficult questions, explore different points of view, and try to understand what's really at the heart of these complex issues. In this episode of Doing Diversity in Writing, we—Bethany and Mariëlle—discuss the writing of race and ethnicity in fantasy and sci-fi stories.   What we talked about How race and ethnicity is done in fiction and TV series that are not grounded in real-life human history What gets lost and is added in translation when novels are turned into films or TV series How to not let yourself be limited by the world we know when building a world of your own That it's never to late to start adding more diverse characters to your world, or to make your existing cast more diverse   The fiction and TV series we discussed in particular during this episode are: Babylon 5; Star Trek; Game of Thrones; The Witcher; and Shadow and Bone.
