Episode 100. For this episode, I've invited two women, Judith Pajo and Zeyneb Sayilgan, for a group discussion about living our faiths in America and Germany. We each have unique patterns of immigration in addition to different religious identities and practice. Judith grew up in both countries as a Catholic, Zeyneb likewise grew up in Germany and is a lifelong Muslim, while I grew up in the US and lived in Germany for nearly nine years, having become a practicing Jew as an adult. In comparing our unique religious experiences in these two countries, we found engaging layers of issues that we hope to further explore. A small note. Because this conversation was so extensive, I've divided it into two episodes of approximately 30 minutes each. This first part includes discussion of our background, religious identity and the dynamic of universalism and individuality. Part two will be released in two weeks. Bio for Judith:Judith Pajo, PhD, grew up in both Germany and the United States. She studied Catholic theology and cultural anthropology on both sides of the Atlantic and has been teaching at Pace University in New York City. Her new research on interfaith dialogue among Jews, Christians, and Muslims in Europe and North America, conceived a little over a year ago, is transforming her Catholic faith. She is currently working on an article about cultural transgressions in interfaith work. Judith lives in Queens, NY. Links for Judith: Profile at Pace University LinkedIn – Judith Pajo Bio for Zeyneb:Zeyneb Sayilgan, PhD, is the Muslim Scholar at ICJS, The Institute for Islamic, Christian, and Jewish Studies in Baltimore, where her research focuses on Islamic theology and spirituality as articulated in the writings of Muslim scholar Bediüzzaman Said Nursi (1876-1960). Today's conversation is the second half of our last episode on Solomon—the wisest man to ever live (until Jesus, of course), the son of David and the one who finally built the temple. We'll look in awe at how the presence of God showed up at the dedication of the temple, and we'll marvel at the reality that we now get to experience that same presence living within us—and that our truest identity is found in that presence. So, pull up a chair at our table, and let's dive into the conversation.

In today's conversation, we're going to pick up where we left off last year in our Thru the Bible series with the 3rd king of Israel—the wisest man to ever live (until Jesus, of course), the son of David and the one who finally built the temple—Solomon. We'll see how the feeling of inadequacy at the onset of a new calling tends to result in a beautiful humility and holy understanding of our need for God—and that when we need wisdom, all we have to do is ask for it. We'll see the gracious, loving, abundant heart of our Father God, who delights to not only meet our needs, but also to give us abundantly more than we can ask or imagine. We'll look in awe at how the presence of God showed up at the dedication of the temple, and we'll marvel at the reality that we now get to experience that same presence living within us—and that our truest identity is found in that presence. So, pull up a chair at our table, and let's dive into the conversation.

On July 20th, 2020, Gallatin, Tennessee 911 dispatchers received a phone call from Aaron Solomon. This horrifying, complex story is similar to the Murdaugh story in so many ways. It is a case of crime and corruption with systemic failures and social media efforts standing up against the Good Ole Boys. This is the first of many episodes on this case. 1 Kings 13:1-10, 33-34 & Numbers 8:16-19 Today we hear King Jeroboam's hand suddenly become paralyzed but then miraculously healed when the man of God prays for it. This still does not change Jeroboam's heart and he continues to do evil. We take note that even though Jeroboam still seems like the bad guy, the man of God prayed for him. The kids are reminded to think about someone they know who is far from God and to pray for that person this week. Please join me in helping with the hunger crisis in Somalia. 1 Kings 12: 25-32 & Exodus 32:1-4 If you've missed the previous Solomon episodes, please go back and listen or you may be confused as to how we got where we are in today's story. It is listed as Solomon part I. Today, we hear King Jeroboam set up 2 golden calves as idols for the people in his kingdom. We define what idols are and also prompt the kids to talk with their families about: 1. Ways to grow your love for God 2. Discuss the shows you watch and see if you notice characters idolizing things. 3. Talk about what it looks like to like something versus loving something. God is a loving father & it's His pleasure to give us good things & see us enjoy them but there's a difference b/n enjoying something and loving it more than God. 1 Kings 12:20-24 & Romans 14:11 The kingdom is divided: Solomon's son Rehoboam is king over the southern kingdom, Judah while Jeroboam is king over northern kingdom, Israel. King Rehoboam is not happy about this and assembles an army to win back his kingdom. Will they battle OR does God have a different plan for their lives? We discuss the fact that God says "This is my doing." We are reminded God is always in control and has plans for our lives even when we can't always see it or feel it. We can trust his control and His plans. Why do I trust Him? I trust Him because I can look to the cross to see the His rescue plan for us. The cross reminds me of the cost Jesus paid, the love we are given, and the salvation we didn't earn or deserve. All of this reminds me, I can trust God's plans. 1 Kings 12:1- 17 Today we hear how the kingdom becomes divided and review the sections each king rules, it's name, and the tribes of each. We also point out that the Bible says these events are brought about by the Lord, that He might fulfill his word, which the Lord spoke by Ahijah to Jeroboam. It reminds me there will be times in life where it's not always as it seems. I imagine some in the kingdom were upset and concerned that the kingdom was dividing, but we can trust that God is in complete control. He just told them that the situation they are going through was from Him. He was still in control and had plans that they couldn't quite understand. 1 Kings11:1-6, 9-13, 26-43, & Luke 1:31-33 In order to respect each families ages and stages of life I have adapted some of this. Please go back and read the scriptures listed so you can include what's appropriate for your family. Today we hear what happens at the end of Solomon's reign. Though Solomon sinned, making us wonder how the promise could ever be kept, the kids will see the Gospel woven throughout the Bible as they hear again the promise is fulfilled in the one who was born that Christmas day....Jesus. Jesus Christ will sit on the throne and His kingdom will have no end. What wonderful news! Thanks for listening and sharing the Bible with your children! 1 Kings 10:1-14, 22-24, & Ecclesiastes 2:1-11 Today we begin to comprehend just how wealthy Solomon was. With his wealth and his wisdom, Solomon tells us anything he saw and wanted, he got. This might sound incredible but Solomon learned a very valuable lesson that everything is meaningless without God. Things or fame, none of that will satisfy us fully because what we are really searching for is God. The Creator of our souls is the one who satisfies us. The kids will hear examples of this so they can begin to understand how this applies to their own lives. 1 Kings 8:1-24, 54-56, & 1 Kings 9: 1-9 We are continuing our Solomon series. If you've missed a few, I'd highly recommend you go back and listen as they build upon themselves.Today's episode picks up after Solomon completed the temple (episode # 280). We listen in as Solomon prays to the Lord and hear what the Lord says to Solomon in return. The Lord warns him and his descendants not to turn away from Him, not to wander and serve other gods. The kids will begin to understand that out of His love, God gives us rules and consequences. When he tells us to do something it's because it's for our own good! He wants to protect us and He offers us things that are real, lasting, and loving versus other things that have fake promises. I try to help the children connect these dots with real life examples they can understand. Thanks for tuning in & helping teach the Bible to your children. Matthew 27:50-56, 2 Chronicles 3:8-14 & Hebrews 4:14, 16 In our last episode, we heard Solomon built the temple. Today, we are going to hear something really important that happened at the temple on the day Jesus was crucified. We just celebrated Easter so I think this is a perfect time to discuss the significance of the veil being torn. I hope your kids enjoy it! To connect with me, go to https://www.kbspodcast.com/
1 Kings 5:1-10, 6:1-20,29-38, 1 Samuel 16:7, & 1 John 4:19 Today we hear Solomon build a magnificent temple for the Lord. Below, there are links you can visit to see a video of what Solomon's temple looked like. We hear how marvelous Solomon's temple was but the kids are reminded that Solomon didn't need to earn God's love and neither do we. 1 John 4:19 "We love because He first loved us." God chose to love us first, we didn't have to earn it by becoming rich and famous or building the most impressive building. Sometimes people will only be kind or loving if they are first shown that. For example, you will only share your bike if they first share their rollerblades. That's not how God works. He shares His love with us first! I hope you enjoy today's continuation of our Solomon series. To see a video of Solomon's temple go here : https://youtu.be/y2tha7ogpecTo see more about the significance of the rooms, carvings, location, and all of the meanings, search "Solomon's Temple Explained" on YouTube. To connect with me, go to https://www.kbspodcast.com/
