In this episode of Rethink, we explore how the stories we believe — and those we inherit — shape our perceptions, behaviors, and relationships. Inspired by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's powerful concept of “The Danger of a Single Story,” the episode examines how narratives and labels can both illuminate and limit our understanding of people, cultures, and global issues.Through compelling real-life examples and expert reflections, we unpack the risks of oversimplified narratives and challenge listeners to rethink the stories that define their worldview. This is an invitation to move beyond stereotypes and embrace the rich complexity of our shared human experience.
With Bobby's upcoming parole hearing, it's been a bit challenging getting into the mindset of recording lately, as you'll hear. In this episode Bobby recounts his childhood experiences of feeling like an outsider in the only world he knew, and how those early experiences shaped his life. This one offers a crucial look at the nuances of identity, the hidden scars of childhood, and the search for self-acceptance. It also reminds us how easy it is to fall into the limited, or one-dimensional, narrative about a person. You can read more about Bobby and prison reform on our website: notesfromthepen.com And check out the GoFundMe to help with Bobby's new start https://www.gofundme.com/f/j3khzk-help-for-a-new-startTwitter: https://twitter.com/NotesFromThePen Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/p/CJYuOh4pKxa/?igshid=y8lo9kbdifvq Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/notesfromthepen.bsky.socialShout-out to JD and Ashely Bell for all their behind the scenes support. We often talk about how God is the "Author and Finisher of our faith" and how He "orders our steps". However, when it comes to the reality of singleness, we have a hard time believing that it could be under His authorship. This is compounded by the overemphasis that can be placed on marriage within the church at times, which leaves us wondering, "Do I write my story, or is God writing my story?" In this conversation, we will be discussing these very issues with our guest, Meisha Watson.Meisha has worked in the Canadian entertainment industry for over 12 years. She has hosted on YTV's The Zone and the ZoneWeekend, presented at the Canadian Screen Awards, and interviewed top chefs from across Canada. “As nurses and healthcare providers, we need to be up to date with the most current evidence-based practices. To achieve and maintain this, we must institute a learning culture. It is critical to promote a learning culture and healthcare institution to keep both patients and nurses safe,” Klara Culmone, MSN, RN, OCN®, assistant nurse manager at the Laura and Isaac Perlmutter Cancer Center at NYU Langone Health in New York, told Jaime Weimer, MSN, RN, AGCNS-BS, AOCNS®, manager of oncology nursing practice at ONS, during a discussion about what oncology nurses should know about creating a learning culture in the workplace for nurses at all levels, from staff to managers and administrators. Highlights From Today's Episode “There are a few ways to demonstrate to nurses that a healthcare organization values and promotes a learning culture. So, for example, allowing the time off to attend relevant conferences including covering costs such as transportation, registration, et cetera, as we know that these costs can really go up quickly.” TS 2:20 “Allowing time off the unit with the adequate coverage is really critical, and I think that's a challenge that many of us face right now. So, staffing may not always allow for it, but trying to have a plan set in advance can really help ease this challenge. So, some things that we have implemented to minimize staffing impact on the unit would include, perhaps, paying the nurse to attend the class on a day outside of their scheduled shift, so this is especially helpful for remote learning.” TS 5:48 “Nurse leaders are really critical in the development of a positive learning environment. Nurse leaders should conduct the learning needs assessment within their team and then tailor the educational plan based off of the results. And this really, ideally, should be done in collaboration with their nursing professional development specialists. It's important for nurses to share new knowledge with one another.” TS 7:59 “One of the best ways for nursing schools and facilities to collaborate is by hosting student clinical groups. Having nursing students work with nurses allows the nurse to share their knowledge with the future of the nursing workforce. They are teaching a new generation of nurses. I mean, many of us remember the best clinical experiences during our training. And it is always the preceptor nurse who spent the most time teaching and answering our questions that gave us the motivation and drive to continue learning.” TS 10:39 “I would just really encourage all of our fellow nurses to just be open to new learning, open to new ideas, and willing to teach one another, because I think we really do the best when we build one another up, we listen to each other, and we learn from one another.” TS 19:20

This culture really includes a transparent, nonpunitive approach to reporting and learning from adverse events or close calls and even unsafe conditions. The goal is to prevent and minimize events that may cause harm.” Timestamp (TS) 02:15 “Oncology nurses are critical in the establishment of this type of culture. They are leaders and often role models within their institutions. Oncology nurses understand policies, standards of care, and up-to-date evidence-based practice. Being on the front lines, oncology nurses see how these three things can come together and directly affect our patients and also the work environment. This global understanding positions the oncology nurses to be the liaison between patients, members of the healthcare team, and leadership.” TS 02:43 “In health care, we really need to look at these different safety steps we have in place to prevent patient harm. It's really important to remind oncology nurses that we report safety events so that we can prevent them from happening again.” TS 12:15 “Leaders need to support a questioning attitude from oncology nurses. They should stop and resolve using thoughtful, two-way questioning. We really encourage nurses to report anything that doesn't seem right so we can work together to ensure patient safety.” TS 13:19 “Oncology nurses are equipped with knowledge and skills to create this culture. They can be familiar with current practices and standards of care for oncology patients and recommend changes if applicable. Oncology nurses can also participate in quality improvement projects, peer-to-peer education or re-education, and applicable competencies on their unit. Oncology nurses can also do team daily huddles at the beginning of their shifts to review their schedules for the day and perhaps any potential complications or safety issues that they may anticipate and come up with a plan.” TS 19:01 “I love the motto, ‘If you see a problem, you can solve a problem.' So, no matter what level you fall on on the clinical ladder or within your administration, you always have the opportunity to promote and create positive change and do that with the leadership support.” TS 21:22

While some of us spent the long days of the early pandemic cleaning out the refrigerator or adopting a puppy, others – like Dr. M Jackson – spent it searching for a hidden hoard of pirate gold in Alaska. The adventure, filmed in summer 2020 and chronicled in the hit 2022 Netflix series Pirate Gold of Adak Island, is but one of many far-flung locales that this UO grad has traveled in her exciting career in search of what the earth can reveal. Indeed – as a geographer, glaciologist, National Geographic Explorer, Fulbright Ambassador, TED Fellow, Peace Corps volunteer, and author – Dr. Jackson's life has mostly been about seeing and doing things differently than many of her peers. Earning her doctorate from the UO in 2017, Dr. Jackson explored how climate change transformed people and glacier communities in Iceland. A staunch advocate of communicating science in ways that resonate outside of the Academy, Dr. Jackson worked for more than a decade in the Artic, chronicling climate change, communities, and glacial systems. Her sustained interrogation of “who gets to practice glacial science” still forms the backbone of her professional practice. Dr. Jackson is interviewed on the podcast by Dr. Hollie Smith, Associate Professor of Science and Environmental Communication and Associate Director for the UO Center for Science Communication Research. As two women who have reflected deeply about “what knowledges” are permitted in the scientific realm and how scientific discoveries are shared with the public, their captivating conversation will naturally connect with scientists and non-scientists alike. Dr. Jackson's 2015 memoir, While Glaciers Slept: Being Human in a Time of Climate Change, knits together stories of climate change in both family and planet. Her 2019 book, The Secret Lives of Glaciers, examines the profound impacts of glacier change on the human and physical geography of Iceland. Her forthcoming (and first) novel, The Ice Sings Back, is set in the Pacific Northwest, where M – in between travels to ice around the world – makes her home with her husband and young son. Read Dr. M Jackson's newest novel, The Ice Sings Back, available beginning in January 2023 https://bookshop.org/p/books/the-ice-sings-back-m-jackson/18660400 For more information on Dr. M Jackson, visit: https://www.drmjackson.com/ Keep in touch! How are you doing with murder today? Pretty good? How about your anger? Maybe not as good? I won't even ask about the name calling you've done. But maybe it'd be good to check in on that? What labels have you placed on people this last week? Here are some examples: conservative/liberal, woke/racist, millennial/boomer, sheep, ignorant, moron, etc. Is name calling the same as murder? No. Is it on the same spectrum? Yes. Jesus takes this spectrum very seriously and calls his followers to rise above that spectrum all together to be a community of reconciliation in a world of discord and division. How important is it to Jesus that his followers become a community of reconciliation? He says that reconciliation is more important than the worship you bring before God. This is the lesson in a nutshell, but I want to dig in a bit more. Ted Talk I mentioned - “The Danger of a Single Story,” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Today, I approach the subject of abortion with a (somewhat) open mind. I appreciate the fact that this is a divisive topic, and my hope is to relieve some of the pressure on the subject so that we can address the practical issues that are related to reproductive care. As someone who believes that it should a person's choice whether or not they have a child, I am committed to taking action to maintain that choice, but I am open to listening to and understanding other's opinions. So in my attempt to keep an open mind, I share two TedxTalks by women who are holding space for non-divisive conversations around this subject. Staying true to my own need to keep fighting for the right to choose, I share a Ted Talk that gives hope and suggestions for what to do when Roe is overturned. Finally, I share Ted Talk that has nothing to do with abortion or reproductive rights, but it's as a reminder that life is complicated, people are complicated and their stories are not single nor straightforward, so let's keep an open mind as we have these discussions. Plus a little New Moon wisdom...TedxTalk by Asha Dahya, Journalist and women's rights activist; founder/editor of GirlTalkHQ.com, presents: “Reframing Reproductive Rights: Going Beyond Pro-Choice vs Pro Life” Asha shares her big idea surrounding what it would it look like if we took the most divisive topic in America and changed the narrative beyond pro-choice and pro-life?Ted Talk The End of Roe v. Wade by Kathryn Kolbert, Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 decision protecting people's right to have an abortion in the United States, will be overturned within a year, says reproductive rights attorney Kathryn Kolbert. In this electrifying call to action, she breaks down the systematic attack against reproductive freedom in the US and envisions what a post-Roe world could look like. "First, we've got to build a badass social justice movement," she says. And just for reference, TedxTalk by Pro-Life Feminist Deanna Wallace. (not listened to on the show)TedxTalk about "wholelife" principles, the precursor to "pro-life" and what's been left out of it today by Khadija Garrison Adams, former missionary, master storyteller and Black breastfeeding champion Khadija Garrison Adams talks about the ways that fear of pregnancy impacts people who aren't unmarried young adults, unpacks how our understanding of the pro-life movement is based on a faulty version of its history and how it's origin story is ripe for building a third way in the conversation - a way that could be led by a group ignored by pro-life and pro-choice champions - The Black Church.TED Talk The Danger of a Single Story by novelist and author of We Should All Be Feminists Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, which tells the story of how she found her authentic cultural voice -- and warns that if we hear only a single story about another person, we risk a critical misunderstanding.Maternal Mortality StatsStories for Choice from the TMI ProjectAnd finally, here's your Moon report.Today's show was engineered by Ian Seda of Radio Kingston. Our show music is from Shana Falana !!!Feel free to email me, say hello: she@iwantwhatshehas.org** Please: SUBSCRIBE to the pod and leave a REVIEW wherever you are listening, it helps other users FIND IThttp://iwantwhatshehas.org/podcastITUNES | SPOTIFY | STITCHERITUNES: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/i-want-what-she-has/id1451648361?mt=2SPOTIFY:https://open.spotify.com/show/77pmJwS2q9vTywz7Uhiyff?si=G2eYCjLjT3KltgdfA6XXCASTITCHER: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/she-wants/i-want-what-she-has?refid=stpr'Follow:INSTAGRAM * https://www.instagram.com/iwantwhatshehaspodcast/FACEBOOK * https://www.facebook.com/iwantwhatshehaspodcastTWITTER * https://twitter.com/wantwhatshehas
Why One Single Story? We believe that the Bible is one single story from beginning to end. It is the story of Jesus Christ: why we need Him, that He was coming, came, died, rose again, ascended to heaven, and today lives with us. For this, we are thankful. Reading the Bible in the order it was written is an interesting way to read it. Every day you'll read multiple passages. Sometimes they'll come from various books of the Bible. The reading order pieces the stories together, which helps understand the stories better. We'll release a daily podcast from each daily reading — 365 podcasts. We want to help support you in your Bible reading and study. These podcasts are produced by Open Door Church in Edenton, NC. Throughout 2022, we are reading the Bible chronologically as a church to grow and learn together.
We have a lot of silliness in the intro to this episode, with Dave complaining about having a cold, an argument about whether real or fake Christmas trees are superior, and a surprise visit from our good friend and colleague, Ed. When we finally pull things together, Abby brings us a quote from a TED Talk by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie entitled “The Danger of a Single Story,” and prompts us to continue the discussion from our last episode about stories and the role of storytelling in both our pedagogy and curricula. Through the ensuing discussion, we think through what voices teachers elevate (or silence) through the stories we bring into our classrooms, and the messages we might inadvertently be conveying or reinforcing to our students. No easy answers here for us, but we have lots of questions, as usual. Here is the TED Talk by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie that Abby references in this episode: https://www.ted.com/talks/chimamanda_ngozi_adichie_the_danger_of_a_single_story
