In this weeks episode, Pastors Doug, Blake, and Kyle discuss the following: 1. I'm a little confused what happens to you after death. I read a few different answers. I read that your soul leaves your body and goes into a dream like state, there is judgement right away, day of judgment, that judgement will happen in two stages - an initial personal judgement when people die, followed by the definitive judgement at the end of it as well as Second Coming (Parousia). I always believed that when you died your body is left on earth but your soul goes to heaven. The pain is left behind and that you live in eternal “bliss” (lack of a better word) but I'm so confused with this sleep like state. Same question about hell. Thanks!2.Would there be morality if there was no fall? When God created Adam and Eve they did not know Good from Evil until they ate from the tree, prior to that everything just was. Does that also mean God intended on us never knowing the difference between the two? 3.Do you believe that a person transitioning (or transitioned) from one gender to the other (so, for example, looking into or having had surgeries as well as taking hormones and changing names, dressing as their non-biological gender, etc.) can be a Christ-following, committed Christian? They are actively rebelling against God's creational norm. Each day choosing to go against His creation. So can you be a trans-gender Christian?

For many people, a key part of the holidays this time of year includes attending services in a faith community. But for many transgender people, it's difficult to find a spiritual home that's welcoming, affirming and inclusive. Austen Hartke, executive director of Transmission Ministry Collective. he talks with host Cathy Wurzer about his online ministry dedicated to the spiritual care of transgender people around the world.
Reverend Sarah Kientz dialogues contemporary gender, faith and trans identity issues with noted theologian Austen Harke. Austen Hartke is the author of Transforming: The Bible and the Lives of Transgender Christians, a book on theology and personal narratives published by Westminster John Knox Press in 2018. He is also the founder and director of Transmission Ministry Collective, an online community dedicated to the spiritual care, faith formation, and leadership potential of transgender and gender-expansive Christians. Austen is a graduate of Luther Seminary's Master of Arts program in Old Testament/Hebrew Bible Studies, and is the winner of the 2014 John Milton Prize in Old Testament Writing from the same institution.
Austen Hartke is a transgender Christian man who wrote the book Transforming: the Bible and the Lives of Transgender Christians. The book is a gift to the trans Christian community, as well as to parents, church leaders, and the church in general. While the church and politicians debate and degrade transgender people's existence, they are trying to live lives without loneliness, isolation, and self-hatred. Austen's book does an incredible job of sharing the stories of real life trans and non-binary people who grew up in the church. He frames the conversation Biblically and theologically and shares his own story. We're excited to share Austen's voice and perspective, and to do something that far too few people are doing today--actually listening to the perspective and story of trans people who are trying to love themselves and love Jesus. The resources Austen mentions in the interview are:Transmission Ministry CollectiveTransfaith: A Transgender Pastoral Resource - Christina Beardsley & Chris DowdThe beverage we sample in the episode is Chicken Cock Kentucky Straight Rye from our friends at Story Hill BKC.The beverage tasting is at 2:20. "I don't understand," they say, and now you've got some work to do. Listener Kai asks how to explain what nonbinary means to their boyfriend's religious parents. Luckily, Faith knows how to talk to religious people so you know The Gender Rebels have some thoughts. Checkout our episodes with our nonbinary friend Avery: Everything In Between and Nonbinary Talk With Avery. A nonbinary person is not necessarily intersex, but Avery said it can be a helpful metaphor to people who prefer to start from a scientific example. Check out our intersex episode for details. Faith is a fan of Sci Show and they also have an episode on intersex people. Becoming Eve: My Journey from Ultra-Orthodox Rabbi to Transgender Woman by Abby Stein is just one of many stories from religious or formerly religious people dealing with queerness, transition, or being nonbinary or intersex. This episode features special guest and friend of the pod, Julie Ellis Washington! Julie is a nurse and a mother of five who lives in South Georgia. In this touching interview, she tells the story of how she and her husband adopted three of their children, what it's like having and advocating for a transgender child in a small southern town, and how that experience started the process of her faith deconstruction. We believe that everyone deserves to be both accepted and celebrated in their church, and it can be heartbreaking to find out your church isn't fully affirming. This was Julie's experience when her son came out as transgender, and she has been wrestling with her faith, knowing that she believes in an all-loving god, but doesn't want to settle for a church experience that doesn't fully embrace her son for all he is. We are so thankful there are people like Julie who choose love every day, and who strive to make their corner of the world a more accepting place. Do you have a sweater chest? A dressmaker's mannequin for your shawls, or a special hanger? A box of socks? I tend to roll my handknit socks and put them in a drawer. I only have drawer space for my shawls but worry that by folding them I’ll have fold marks when it’s time to wear them. Austen Hartke is the author of Transforming: The Bible and the Lives of Transgender Christians, a new book on theology and personal narratives published by Westminster John Knox Press in 2018. He is also the creator of the YouTube series Transgender and Christian, which seeks to understand, interpret, and share parts of the Bible that relate to gender identity and the lives of transgender individuals. Austen is a graduate of Luther Seminary's Master of Arts program in Old Testament/Hebrew Bible Studies, and is the winner of the 2014 John Milton Prize in Old Testament Writing from the same institution. He has spoken at conferences all over the country, including The Reformation Project Conferences in 2014 and 2017, the Philadelphia Transgender Wellness Conference in 2016 and 2018, and the 2018 Why Christian Conference. He also enjoys speaking at colleges and universities, and working with gender-diverse youth and families as the Faith Coordinator for the nonprofit group Gender Spectrum. If you didn’t get out to your local LGBTQ Pride festivities -- no worries -- this episode is a Pride month celebration. Our own Pastor Casey Tinnin was elected the Grand Marshal of the Sacramento, California Pride Parade. What do you wear when you’re the Grand Marshal of a Pride parade? In the first half of this celebration, Casey recounts his experience, internally and externally, of representing and serving his community in Sacramento Pride. In part two of this episode, Casey sits down with author and pastor, Rev. Lawrence T. Richardson. Rev. Lawrence T. Richardson is an African-American trans man who wears many hats. He is Pastor at Linden Hills United Church of Christ, media trainer with Auburn Seminary, leadership coach with The Center for Progressive Renewal, and a writer for The Salt Collective. He recently wrote the book, I Know What Heaven Looks Like: A Modern Day Coming of Age Story. In addition to his new book, Rev. Richardson writes about and advocates for LGBTQ people, people of color and the flourishing of all. His works have appeared in Huffington Post Religion, The Root, Believe Out Loud, The Salt Collective, Rachel Murr’s Unnatural: Spiritual Resiliency in Queer Christian Women, Austen Hartke’s Transforming: The Bible and the Lives of Transgender Christians, and numerous other national and international publications. He has also received awards and commendations for his service from Black Transmen, Inc. and the Stellar Awards for his work in global communication. You will not want to miss this conversation between two men who, through struggle, have found their callings into ministry. The conversation, like Pastor Casey and Rev. Lawrence, is authentic, real, vulnerable and full of testimony to the power of finding Love in God and in people who know how to Love freely and abundantly. Pride Month Celebration Part One w/ Pastor Casey (01:23) Pride Month Celebration Part Two w/ Rev. Lawrence T. Richardson (18:03) PASTOR CASEY’S SPEECH FROM SACRAMENTO PRIDE My name is Pastor Casey Tinnin, I am the Pastor of Loomis United Church of Christ. I am the founder of The Landing Spot a non religious support group for LGBTQIA+ teens and their adult caregivers, the Co-Founder of Intersections a recovery group for ex fundamentalists and ex evangelicals, and a co-host on the podcast Irenicast. I want to say thank you to the four thousand people who voted for me. It is my deepest honor to be one of your grand marshals. It recently has been said that the only way forward is for “everyone to be accepted.” This is true, however true love and acceptance comes with a deep since of humility and truth telling. Acceptance is not created by back door deals and forced participation. Love and acceptance comes when we are willing to tell the truth of our own lives and to take account of our own actions and how our actions are perceived. Today, I am aware that as a gay cist gendered Pastor and for many in the LGBTQ+ community seeing a pastor stand before them is triggering. And so this morning I want to say I am sorry on behalf of God and Christianity for the violence that has been inflected upon you. For the ways spoken and unspoken that the message of Christianity has been coopted and used to harm each of us. Sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia, body shaming…. I am sorry… I am also aware of how cis gendered gay men and lesbians have fallen short in their support for the transgendered community. We stand on the shoulders of giants, and it is on the shoulders of those trans women who lead the fight at stone wall that we have any rights at all. But fifty years later it is still trans people, and trans people of color who are still the victims of abuse, hate, murder, infection, suicide, and homelessness. And apart of your suffering is because as cis gendered gay and lesbian people we have been complicit, and for that I am sorry. Beloved family, the only way forward is together. There is a new wind blowing through this place, and my prayer is that it stirs among us and through our capital, and throughout the nation. We are in trying times, but we can not combat hate with hate, it is only love that can see us forward. Every week I see the boldness and courage of young LGBT teens in the work that I do that are looking for love and acceptance, and it is our job together to make the world a more safe and loving world for them. And in creating that world it will require us to take bold action, like we have seen the Pride Center Staff do. So thank you Pride Center staff… not just for standing up and living boldly this week but every day that you show up for the most vulnerable among us. You have stood with us, and we will stand with you. A powerful wind of change is blowing among us, may we be committed to rolling with it together and continuing to build the arc of justice together. Because the only way we truly rise, is together. Does transition mean going against God's plan? In this episode we answer a listener question from a transwoman. She asks "I am finally taking steps necessary to create the happiness and peace I need in my life through transition. I have come out to some people who are very close to me but have not come out to my parents. I have this itching feeling that my mom knows. She confronted my fiancé about me and one of her comments was 'I'm okay with being gay but transgender is something different. God doesn't make mistakes when it comes to gender.' What is your take on religion and gender?" So does God mistakes with gender? It is a wonderful book, and this discussion gives a great insight into why it is so essential for our times. We talk about what it is like to write a book with helplines in the back, how conversations and the stories of others shape a theological work, what Biblical story Austen would turn into a movie, why the book centres on Biblical studies/exegesis, the connection of experience between Eunuchs in the ancient world and Transgender Christians today, the importance of the body in the New Testament, and a life lived beyond apologetics.Austen Hartke is the creator of the YouTube series “Transgender and Christian,” which seeks to understand, interpret, and share parts of the Bible that relate to gender identity and the lives of transgender individuals.
