The meeting was between myself, the HR Manager and the coachee's manager and I was taking a brief about a potential coaching opportunity. The question was asked ‘so what kind of reporting do you do?'. I offered my standard response regarding confidentiality and who reports the outcomes of the coaching to whom. But to be frank, since we have our standard responses, it is not something that we spend a lot of time thinking about. And at the same time, it made me realise how we never take for granted the nature of the confidential relationship between coach and coachee. And how important it is to navigate the requirements of stakeholders whilst maintaining confidentiality. As professional workplace coaches, this is an important part of setting up the coaching agreement. In fact, it is written into the ICF Core Competency: Demonstrates Ethical Practice. So this week on the Coaching Café Podcast, join Natalie and Paula as we continue our deeper dive into the ICF Core Competency of Demonstrates Ethical Practice and explore how to: ✔️ Maintain confidentiality in coaching ✔️ Navigate stakeholder agreements ✔️ Set clear expectations in coaching contracts ✔️ Respond to common questions about reporting We'll also provide a practical framework for handling conversations like the one above. If you are a regular, you know the vibe and the great contribution that you make to our discussions; so we look forward to welcoming you back and offering you a value-packed 30 minutes each TuesdayIf you've not joined us for a Coaching Café Podcast, now is your opportunity to schedule this time for your professional and personal development.  In no time at all, you'll be looking forward to Tuesdays, just like we all do!  You can also tell us the topics you want to hear about this year by emailing us using the email below. Thanks for listening! Joining her were Rachel Schaefer, CEO of Opportunity Scholars, Caroline Brown, Director of Development and Growth, and Shonda Avis, HR Manager for Holtzman Oil and Propane. Rachel opened the discussion by providing an overview of what Opportunity Scholars is all about. “Opportunity Scholars is an organization that connects individuals to jobs and to education. We take people who are unemployed or underemployed and come from low to middle-income families and help connect them to employment and help connect them to an education.” She emphasized the organization's growth since its inception in 2019 and the positive impact it's had on the community. Rachel conveyed her gratitude to partners like Holtzman Corp for their invaluable support. Janet highlighted the success and the critical role partnerships play in the expansion of Opportunity Scholars. She noted that while some organizations struggle with expansion, Opportunity Scholars is prospering, thanks to their strategic alliances with various businesses and educational institutions. Caroline delved deeper into the organization's growth strategy, particularly highlighting their expansion into Shenandoah County, thanks to a generous gift from Bill Holtzman. “We are very focused on career and technical education because let's face it – we are seeing critical shortages in everything from HVAC to electrical, to nursing,” Brown stated. She emphasized the importance of their partnerships with local schools, businesses, and the need for a dedicated coach to support their scholars. Shonda shed light on the diversity of opportunities within Holtzman Corp and the mutual benefits of their partnership with Opportunity Scholars. Avis elaborated on how the corporation's support aligns with Holtzman's community-focused ethos, providing a healthy pipeline of qualified candidates for various roles within their extensive business operations. The conversation also touched upon the significance of community engagement and the importance of local support. Shonda highlighted Holtzman's commitment to giving back to the community, noting Bill Holtzman's philosophy of attributing his business success to community support and his personal passion for education. Rachel and Caroline both emphasized the need for local support to sustain and grow Opportunity Scholars. Caroline issued a plea for a new coach and highlighted the importance of community involvement in spreading the word about their mission. She encouraged everyone to engage with their social media platforms to stay updated and help spread the word. What HR Managers Learn About You By Looking at Your Clothes

If you want to get your dream job, it's crucially important to make the best possible first impression on the recruiter, and everything, including your style, means a lot. There are five vital things you should know that hiring professionals use to form their opinions about you and decide if you will fit into the corporate culture and get the job or not. Sherry Maysonave, head of Empowerment Enterprises, an image consulting firm based in Austin, Texas, says that the first impression happens in less than 30 seconds and it's based entirely on your attire. Using the color of your clothes, you can influence other people however you want. Pastel colors in clothes and makeup can help you win other people's trust. The most important thing is not to overdo it. Blue is probably the best color choice for a job interview, unless you're aiming for a creative job. The color red represents the life force and the inclination to be successful and efficient. Business suits are not always the best choice for a job interview because the impression you may give the employer is that you are “overqualified.” A tasteful statement dress that doesn't reveal your neckline and ends around 1 inch above the very top of your knee will do just fine. Your attire should be as close to the company dress code as possible. People are more eager to accept other people who are like them, so the more you look like the other employees, the easier it is for an HR manager to imagine you working with them. I had to learn more about John Ford's pathway that took him from practicing law, to working on workplace mediation, training others in these important emotional intelligence training skills. Let's meet John Ford, and see what we can learn from his vast experience with conflict resolution to see how he gains trust, with a calming effect in the most difficult and tense situations.  Welcome John, thank you for meeting with me today. Where have we reached you today? (I'm located in Arizona). Q1: John, can you share what inspired you to transition from practicing law to focusing on workplace mediation and soft-skills training? Q2: Can you also explain how your work was influenced by all of these researchers and influencers that our listeners would know well. Like Daniel Goleman, the author of Emotional Intelligence, neuroscientist Antonio Damasio, John Gottman's evidence-based research as well as Paul Ekman's work on facial expressions. Q3: What are some other books that you can point us to improve these important skills, books, like Difficult Conversations (Douglas Stone, Bruce Patton and Sheila Hein), or Nonviolent Communication to help us to improve how to better communicate our feelings in our work and personal lives? Q4: I see you have created tools to help express our feelings without using blame (which we all know takes us down a pathway to more conflict). I don't remember how long along it was that I learned to take “you made me feel” out of my vocabulary, since no one can make me feel anything. It was a good lesson to keep in mind that only I control my feelings. Could you explain how The Empathy Set[ii] and The Talking Sticks work and the benefits they bring to users? Q5: In your opinion, what are the most common challenges organizations face when dealing with workplace conflicts? Q6: What advice would you give to someone who wants to start incorporating empathy and effective communication strategies into their professional or personal life? Final Thoughts: Can you share a success story that highlights the impact of your products or training programs on a team or organization? John, I want to thank you very much for meeting with me today.
