In this fabulously nostalgic episode of G&T: Sips & Giggles, Glenn and Tina Leggs Tantrum hop into their tacky time machine – held together with sequins, hairspray and sheer determination – to celebrate one of the most iconic events in Irish queer history: Alternative Miss Ireland (AMI).From its anarchic beginnings in 1987 to its glittering finale in 2012, AMI was more than just a drag pageant. It was a cultural movement – equal parts outrageous performance, biting satire, and heartfelt activism. With categories like Daywear, Swimwear and Talent (often stretched to their very limits), AMI raised over €335,000 for HIV/AIDS charities and helped launch the careers of legends like Panti Bliss, Shirley Temple Bar, and Veda.Tina shares her own journey from backstage nerves to being crowned Alternative Miss Ireland – complete with behind-the-scenes gossip, outfit drama, and a performance that brought the house down. Glenn and Tina also dive into the community spirit of AMI, its political punch, and why it still casts a rhinestoned shadow over Ireland's queer scene.Whether you were there in the Olympia cheering from the balcony or are just hearing about AMI for the first time – this one's for the misfits, the icons, and everyone who believes in the power of drag to change the world.Strap in – and tune in – as we take you on a glitter-drenched journey through the legacy of AMI. Irish drag legend Shirley Temple Bar chats to the queens about landing her Telly Bingo gig on RTE, the Alternative Miss Ireland and the influence of Rupaul's Drag Race on younger performers and audiences. The queens are also joined by actress and singer Hiba Elchikhe who is currently starring in 'Everybody's Talking About Jamie' on London's West End to talk about her iconic role, working with Bianca Del Rio and being the first actress of middle eastern descent to play Jasmine in Disney's 'Aladdin'.
Now, I know that I've been using the term 'icon' to describe a lot of my guests lately, but, if ever there was an appropriate time to use the word it is now. Shirley Temple Bar burst on to the scene when she won Alternative Miss Ireland in 1997. Since then she has hosted bingo weekly (for the last 23 years) at The George in Dublin, and hosts the National Lottery gameshow, Telly Bingo. None of this compares, however, to the fact that she has MET THE SPICE GIRLS... Like, all five of them... We caught up to discuss H.A.M at P.O.D, meeting Ms. Halliwell, and the heady, heady days of 90s Dublin. Find out more about Shirley by following her at https://www.instagram.com/shirleytemplebar
Des chats to comedian and writer Katherine Lynch about growing up in Mohill, winning Alternative Miss Ireland and how she coped with adverse criticism on social media.
I sit down with Hannah at the Tara Building to chat about her research in LGBT Theatre in Dublin and The Project Arts Centre respectively. We chat her journey through photography, sculpture and writing that led to her research today and what it meant to be part of the LGBT community through the last few decades in Ireland until the Marriage Referendum in 2015. Her upcoming exhibition at The Project Art Centre will feature archived material from Alternative Miss Ireland. Hannah is a Researcher, Historian, Sculpture, Photographer and Writer. Her thesis 'Foul, Filthy, Stinking Muck' looks at the role The Project Art Centre had during the activist movements of the 70s, 80s and 90s. It highlights notable contemporary theatre works that have addressed LGBTQ issues and demonstrates how Project continues to play a role in platforming LGBTQ works. With Being Earnest, I hope to create a space away from the noise of everyday life and distraction. I hope to offer a place, to listen, to share, to be engaged and hopefully inspired. Each week I'll be joined by sound people doing great things to have honest and genuine chats. I hope you enjoy Being Earnest. Thanks for Listening. Presented by GCN’s editor in chief, Brian ‘the host with the most’ Finnegan, the inaugural episode of Q+A: The Queer and Alternative Podcast features best mates Rory O’Neill (aka Panti Bliss) and designer Niall Sweeney, chatting about their iconic contribution to Dublin’s gay scene, from halcyon days of performing outrageous acts together on the stage of their fetish club, GAG, through the creation of ’90s super-club Powderbubble and the legendary dragathon that was Alternative Miss Ireland, to the creative thinking behind the launch of Pantibar, which celebrates ten years pulling pints, and more, this month. It’s a conversation peppered with anecdotes, laughs, nostalgia and attitude, and as GCN’s first ever broadcast, a little piece of history in itself. Music: www.bensound.com

This week Roisin meets Sinead Burke, who also goes by the alias Minnie Melange when competing in (and winning) the Alternative Miss Ireland contest. Sinead is a primary school teacher, phd student in education and fashion blogger, and in her Extraordinary Women series she has interviewed a series of inspirational people. She tells Roisin about how being a little person has not hindered her life and they discuss whether her unusual height has given her a special understanding of other minorities.
In March the last Alternative Miss Ireland beauty pageant was held. The biggest night in the Irish gay calendar was at an end. For this bizarre but fun show, we follow 2 competitors Paul and Sinead, as they battle for the coveted Medusa Crown of Shamrocks
Spring is in the air. There’s a grand stretch in the evenings and there’s great drying out. Yes, this mix is overdue but it’s been a pretty hectic month what with working, going out, working, going out some more and the Alternative Miss Ireland. So […]
