The ILFD podcast is back! With Halloween just around the corner, let's listen back to authors Kirsty Logan & Anya Bergman talking all things witches with moderator Sarah Maria Griffin. Part of the 2023 edition of ILFD. ___ How far would you go for justice? In two powerful additions to the witchlit canon, Kirsty Logan and Anya Bergman dig into the painful realities of life in the shadow of the witch trials. The past few years has seen a blossoming of witch stories, and it's not difficult to see why this period in European history has proven such a rich vein. These stories pitch characters on the fringes of society – through poverty, queerness or plain weirdness – against social forces beyond their control, and the extraordinary measures they must take for their freedom. Kirsty Logan has become a leading light in Scotland's weird gothic resurgence, and her third novel, Now She is Witch, follows unlikely allies Lux and Else on the path of vengeance for the execution of Lux's mother. In Bergman's debut novel, The Witches of Vardø, the teenage Ingeborg still has hopes of rescuing her mother from an island fortress, but like Lux and Else, she must also learn painful lessons about the needs of the many, and her personal quest for justice. ___ Kirsty Logan is a fiction writer, book reviewer, freelance editor and writing mentor based in Glasgow. She is currently working on a short musical, a short story collection, and a very long novel. Anya Bergman is resident in Ireland, is currently undertaking a PhD by Published Works at Edinburgh Napier University, and working on her next novel. ___ ‘Anya Bergman summons a historic witch trial with breathtaking detail and immediacy' ― Hannah Kent (Burial Rites; Devotion) 'Kirsty Logan is one of the darkest and most playful of writers working right now' ― Stylist, *Books to Look Out For 2023* ___ Presented with support from Scottish Books International International Literature Festival Dublin is a Dublin City Council Initiative kindly supported by the Arts Council. OK, so this may not be a title that rings familiar to a lot of folks. But hear us out! The Last One To See wasn't conceived with the idea that everyone everyone has seen each of the selections, and Sarah very much understood the assignment (and Alan willingly agreed to go along with it) with the selection of BUT I'M A CHEERLEADER - a queer classic and rare entry in the lesbian teen movie genre that saw a 20th anniversary re-release in 2020. Sarah Griffin is back to worship at the altar of Maeve Binchy and to deliver a new taxonomy about men and the wind. Evacuated from Blitz-battered London, shy and genteel Elizabeth White is sent to stay with the boisterous O'Connors in Kilgarret, Ireland. It is the beginning of an unshakeable bond between Elizabeth and Aisling O'Connor, a friendship which will endure through twenty turbulent years of change and chaos, joy and sorrow, soaring dreams and searing betrayals. We discuss motherhood, Ireland, judgment, how Binchy has changed the way we write and men on the wind. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Tony, meanwhile, is in love with Aidan’s adult daughter. The book follows every student in the evening class, subtly changing each of their destinies, and culminating with a trip to Italy at the end of the book. Earlier this year when AOC guest starred in a Donkey Kong Twitch stream in which she declared trans rights to be human rights (while batting off criticism from greying 90s pop culture warhorses like Aaron Sorkin and Graham Linehan), it felt for many that a generational Rubicon had been crossed. Computer games. Físchluichí. They've come a long way since Darach was playing Pole Position on his Atari. In recent years games have reached a new level of technical sophistication such that ideas like storytelling and character development can be taken seriously. So how has this new medium expressed ideas like Ireland and Irishness? Like language and colonialism? Darach doesn't know, so he asked two experts to explain it to him. Úna-Minh Kavanagh (@unakavanagh) and Sarah Maria Griffin (@griffski) are bestselling authors who happen to also be massive gamers. Presented and produced by Seán Delaney On this week's podcast I am joined by author Dave Rudden who created the Knights of the Borrowed Dark trilogy. Dave talks about his own writing, about teaching writing to adults and children and he discusses the bullying that was a feature of his life in post-primary school. The specific topics discussed on the podcast are: How he began writing Knights of the Borrowed Dark as a college assignment The premise of the series Who the audience for the books is His experience in the classroom and what attracts him to writing His school visits His writing practice How he learned to write and what teachers can do to help children learn to write Getting into drama and theatre to overcome shyness Getting into live storytelling in Dublin and moving onto writing short stories and then to a Masters in Creative Writing Why Terry Pratchett is a role model He also likes Irish authors Sarah Maria Griffin, Deirdre Sullivan, Catherine Doyle. The benefits of doing a masters course in creative writing Why you don’t have to do a masters course to be a successful writer Differences in teaching writing to children and adults How teachers can teach children to write Explaining why words are weapons, writing is a muscle, and you don’t have to get it right first time The recipe for a character The recipe for a plot Stretch Goals What schools are for How teachers can support children who experience bullying A teacher who had a significant impact on him Who or what inspires him A favourite book or writer or blog about writing: Chuck Wendig, On Writing by Stephen King Neil Gaiman’s Commencement Speech: Make Good Art
I talk with dark young adult and fantasy writer Sarah Maria Griffin about magic, the paranormal, violence in art, and a WHOLE LOT of David Lynch.
A century since a revolutionary Irish government declared the birth of a new nation, we ask how Ireland could be re-invented for the future. We are living in a moment of rapid change. Great geopolitical shifts are destroying old certainties. Climate change is poised to transform our way of life. In Ireland, landmark referendums have been a break with the Ireland of the 20th century and a beacon of democratic innovation. Naomi O'Leary and Tim Mc Inerney take the opportunity to re-imagine what Ireland could be, with special guests Clare Bailey, leader of the Green Party Northern Ireland, award-winning science fiction writer Sarah Maria Griffin, and the political scientist who lead Ireland's Citizens Assembly David Farrell. Unification? Votes at 16? Moving the capital out of Dublin? Banning cars? It's all up for discussion. Special thanks to our hosts the Centre Culturel Irlandais in Paris. We're live from Body & Soul Festival in Ireland talking Maeve Binchy's classic CIRCLE OF FRIENDS. This 700 page epic about a single academic school year is probably the most frequently spotted book on Irish shelves, and with good reason. We talk upwardly mobile Catholics in 1950s Ireland, the specific pains of being a Big Strapping Country lass in a Nan Mahon world, the exquisite world-building of Binchy's Ireland, and learning to embrace Irish fiction, clichés and all. Sarah Maria Griffin is the author of two novels, OTHER WORDS FOR SMOKE and SPARE & FOUND PARTS, and is the co-host of the podcast Juvenalia. This podcast was recorded at Body & Soul Festival, Westmeath. Artwork by Gavin Day, music by Harry Harris, produced by Caroline O'Donoghue and mixed by Hannah Varrall. Kicking things off is the news that there’s a new fantasy sheriff in town – or there will be soon as Discworld’s Ankh-Morpork City Watch are getting their own TV series (which makes us very, very happy). After that we discover that someone else has discovered a lock of what is possibly George Washington’s hair in an old almanac, get some reasons to be optimistic from Talking Heads front man David Byrne, applaud Dolly Parton’s generous book donations, wonder why Terry Goodkind doesn’t like his cover art, and find out that ebooks are apparently stupid (according to a publisher of “real” books). Author Dave Rudden joins Alan and Sarah so that they can feel all the emotions about Terry Pratchett. This is a long one so make a pot of tea or plan a long drive somewhere. We focused mostly on the Discworld novels particularly Vimes and the witches. There’s lots of enthusing and lots of quoting from memory. Hopefully it’ll make you pick up a Discworld book or any Terry Pratchett book really. They’re pretty much all good. Enjoy. Dave’s books Knights Of the Borrowed Dark and The Forever Court are out now. The Forever Court is nominated for Senior Children’s Book of the Year a the BGE Irish Book Awards. If you’re quick you can still vote for it here Sarah’s book Spare And Found Parts will be out in Ireland, the UK, and Australia in Feb 2018. Alan has another podcast running until Christmas. She joined Alan and Sarah to talk about 90’s sitcoms with a particular focus on Frasier. We talked a lot about David Hyde Pierce, the wonders of Daphne Moon and Lilith, metrosexuality, and the art of farce. We also jumped off into talks about Just Shoot Me, Cybil, and the effect that Friends had on a generation of Irish people. Then we finished up with a little metatalk about Juvenalia itself. This week the Stanford case reopened the debate about the prevalence of sexual violence against women and the treatment, in court and in society, of victims and perpetrators. Publicly, all men condemn sexual violence, but what are they doing to bring the culture that encourages it to an end? Not nearly enough, say feminists, writers and friends Sarah Maria Griffin and Roe McDermott. They are joined on today's podcast by veteran court reporter Conor Gallagher, who talks about the experiences of perpetrators and victims in our own courts of law.
2FM DJ and writer Louise McSharry joins Alan Maguire and Sarah Maria Griffin to talk about 80s CLASSIC Dirty Dancing. We brought a wide range of Dirty Dancing experience to the episode. What else did we talk about? Good question. We talked: a lot about how dreamy Patrick Swayze is. A lot. A whole lot. About being too young to watch Dirty Dancing, about our respective weddings and the kinds of dancing we got up to, about plastic surgery, about fictional summer camps, about music, about The Fountainhead, and many other things. Alan Maguire and Ellen Tannam talk to writer Sarah Maria Griffin about a film that was important to her as a teenager, The Fifth Element. Questions asked and answered in this episode include: Is The Fifth Element a noir? Who would we cast in a gender-swapped The Fifth Element? Is Ruby Rhod a queer icon? Is Bruce Willis a hot dad? Could The Fifth Element be made today? Is it weird and cool that Ellen and Sarah had never met before this episode but have something very important in common? How did Sarah turn some of the issues with being a Woman Who Likes Sci-Fi on their head while writing her first novel Spare And Found Parts? Is there really any need to watch Breaking Bad or True Detective? How strong are Alan’s keratin levels? Also, Jean Paul Gaultier, Bruce Willis’s Disney Sex Thriller, Zelda, Twin Peaks, home cinemas built by dads, CAPITALISM, and loads more. We had a Very Good Chat as they call it in formal chat circles. That’s the official term for it. I checked. This is the first episode of Juvenalia.
