-GPS 52.66455, 4.67695 -Dazzle painting -MRI-scan dijbeen triatlonatleet -Amy Cervini, The Physician

Acclaimed vocalists Amy Cervini, Hilary Gardner, and Melissa Stylianou join forces and voices to become 'Duchess', a New York City-based vocal trio known for tight harmonies and big fun, carrying the tradition of the Boswell and Andrews Sisters into the 21st century. They've released four albums together, including their most recent “Live at Jazz Standard”, particularly poignant as the much-loved New York jazz venue did not survive the pandemic. We talk about the magic of hearing and seeing Duchess live, treading the fine lines of tradition and homage and modernisation in vocal groups, and much more. I'm also throwing in some gems from their 2018 holiday album “Harmony for the Holidays with Duchess” because, well, 'tis the festive season!
What is needed in these adverse times? We turn to our spirit guides, our philosopher kings, our rabbis: the musicians. Because although this particular form of adversity is new, musicians have been choosing to feel good in spite of adverse conditions for a long time. In this episode, we explore the nature of the musician joke, particularly the jazz musician joke. Jokes about gigs, drummers, singers, trombone players, viola players, junkies, 3 legged pigs, bagpipes, bar mitzvahs, African safaris, little old ladies, family therapy, tattoo parlors, monkeys, genies, it’s all here. In other words, the classics. Featuring Steven Bernstein, Amy Cervini, Peter Coyote, Ethan Eubanks, Donald Fagen, James Farber, Steve Gadd, Hilary Gardner, Gil Goldstein, Steve Khan, Ashley Kahn, Tessa Lark, Will Lee, Phil Lyons, Les McCann, Adam Nussbaum, Ben Sidran, Janis Siegel, Larry Ratso Sloman, Dave Stoler, Jack Stratton, Neil Tesser, Michael Visceglia, Michael Winograd, and more.
Jay Daniels chats with the Duchess Trio featuring Amy Cervini, Melissa Stylianou, and Hilary Gardner. You'll hear their stories of how each of their paths led them to sing together in New York City. The ladies will also talk about their new live album, "Live at Jazz Standard." More information is available at http://www.duchesstrio.com.
We're going to Hollywood! We chat with singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, erstwhile standup comic, and (oh, yeah!) MOVIE STAR Nat Wolff about his childhood music lessons with Duchess's very own Amy Cervini, what it was like growing up in show business, the importance of being nice, and the time he got pranked by Robert De Niro.
Duchess is a three part close harmony vocal group comprised of Amy Cervini, Hilary Gardner and Melissa Stylianou. All three are accomplished jazz singers in their own right, who came together for a one off gig at the 55 Bar in New York’s West Village several years ago, and realized that there was something there worth exploring. “Three fine singers...join together in swinging harmony to whip up music that traffics in delight…this fresh-voiced triumvirate plays it straight from the heart, leaving any trace of camp or post-modern irony at the door.” — The New Yorker This conversation explores how each singer’s individual background, how they came to form Duchess, and how they all think about career and craft. www.third-story.com
Canadian vocalist Amy Cervini discusses her combining jazz and country music on her CD â??Jazz Countryâ?? and the fun she has with her female vocal trio Duchess and the different dynamic of singing with women vs. men.

I spoke today at the JazzTimes DIY Crash Course in Manhattan, an event held in tandem with the Association of Performing Arts Presenters conference. This is the audio of my presentation, which was about podcasting and telling a story as an artist. There were graphics, too. As soon as I get the video, I'll pass it along. Thanks to Lee Mergner of JazzTimes for inviting me and thanks to David Lee Joy from All Star Media for providing the audio. Lee Mergner is the first person you'll hear in this audio clip. Thanks also to the wonderful Amy Cervini for assisting with my presentation. UPDATE: Here's video of the first half of my talk. Then my camera battery died. Thanks to Derrick Lucas for filming this. More video may be available later.

Vocalist Amy Cervini is one of a handful of jazz singers who are successfully taking their repertoire from outside the Great American Songbook. On Cervini's new album, Lovefool (Anzic Records, 2009), she tackles everything from the Cardigans to Depeche Mode to Nellie McKay and makes it all work. In this interview, Cervini talks about how she chooses her repertoire; the response of jazz and pop fans to the music she sings; and how she's managed to build both performing and artist management careers. Oh, and she's having a baby, too. Learn more at www.amycervini.com. If you'd like to buy this album, you can support The Jazz Session by purchasing it via the link below:
