It's another Tales Vinyl Tells! You've heard a lot of these before and they are so much fun to hear again! This is Episode 188: Come Along With Me And Let's Dig Some LPs! April 22, 2025 We loved sitting around after work in the late 60s and early 70s and checking out the new LPs that were flooding the market and heard on great radio stations like Mother-WMUM, KSAN, WSHE. The album cuts ranged from King Crimson and Captain Beefheart, a new Beatles, and we'd track from front to back. So many great cuts that just didn't find room on the air. Here on Tales Vinyl Tells, I remind you how great the album cuts were and still are. Moody Blues were bringing the eerie sound of a mellotron, Hendrix' candle was burning brightly, and Seals and Crofts were turning people on to the love in their music and their faith in Bahá'í. Man, we've got all that here with each episode. Donald Fagen and his music is here too, today. Hope you enjoy! I want to say thank you to all the financial supporters of Tales Vinyl Tells. Whether a small amount monthly or a very generous donation, each of you listeners is very appreciated and if you can and do give monthly, my deepest gratitude goes to you. If you're not a patron yet and want to know more about becoming a patron of this music program you can go Patron.podbean.com/talesvinyltellssupport. Thank you and rock on! And thanks for listening today. My email is talesvinyltells@gmail.com. If you want to hear a Tales Vinyl Tells when it streams live on RadioFreeNashville.org, we do that at 5 PM central time Wednesdays. The program can also be played and downloaded anytime at podbean.com, Apple podcasts, iHeart podcasts, Player FM podcasts and many other podcast places. And of course you can count on hearing the Tales on studiomillswellness.com/tales-vinyl-tells anytime.

This time, we tackle the solo works of Walter Becker and Donald Fagen (aka Steely Dan), and to do that, I brought on someone new to talk about them, Mr. Andy Schaal.Andy and me discussed Fagen's The NIghtfly, Kamakiriad, Morph The Cat, and Sunken Condos, as well as Becker's 11 Tracks Of Whack and Circus Money.  A lot of fun was had as we discussed the musical and lyrical quirkiness of the solo works of the duo who comprised Steely Dan.  There are some great songs within these works and any fan of music would be advised to listen and check these out.

Tonight, we'll read a Snoozecast original, “Spandex Jackets (One for Everyone).” Listeners who are fans of Steely Dan may be aware that the title is a reference to Donald Fagen's 1982 track “I.G.Y. (What a Beautiful World)”. The story itself draws inspiration from the song which paints a retro-futuristic dream of undersea rails, solar-powered cities and the promise of a gloriously bright tomorrow. The acronym in the song title I.G.Y. references the “International Geophysical Year” a real life global scientific project that ran from July 1, 1957 to December 31st 1958. It brought together scientists from 67 nations to collaborate on studying Earth's geophysical properties, including its atmosphere, oceans, and polar regions. IGY marked significant advancements in space research, such as the launch of the first artificial satellites (Sputnik by the Soviet Union and Explorer by the United States). Its spirit of international cooperation laid the groundwork for many subsequent collaborative scientific endeavors. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

1975 - January: Led Zeppelin “Physical Graffiti”

What the Riff?!?

By the time that Led Zeppelin was releasing their sixth studio album, they were solidly on top of the rock pantheon.  They had just switched to Swan Song Records, their own label, and had plenty of time to create this double album work, Physical Graffiti.  They had three sides-worth of new songs largely recorded at Headley Grange in Hampshire in early 1974, and they expanded it to a double album by including unreleased tracks from sessions for their previous three albums.  Physical Graffiti went to number 1 on the UK chart and number 3 on the US charts immediately.  They had planned to release the album in November 1974, but delays in producing the album's sleeve design pushed it back to February 1975.  Demand was so strong that it became the first album to go platinum on advance orders alone. The album itself reflects a diversity that runs from hard rock to prog rock to funk - even country and honky-tonk get represented.  The group never seemed too interested in creating single-friendly compositions, so many tracks run well over 6 minutes, along with some shorter instrumental numbers.  Led Zeppelin was considered the biggest rock band on tour during this time, and Physical Graffiti was the album that wrapped up this period.  Robert Plant was in a serious car accident with his wife in August 1975, and the group went on hiatus from touring until 1977.  Many consider this album to be the high water mark for the Led Zeppelin discography.  Bruce presents this monster double album for this week's podcast. KashmirThis is one of Led Zeppelin's signature songs.  It started as an instrumental recording from Jimmy Page and John Bonham.  Robert Plant wrote the lyrics while vacationing in southern Morocco (not Kashmir, as no band members had been there when this song was written).  John Paul Jones plays mellotron and added the orchestration which was played by session musicians.  All members of the band consider it one of their best tracks, and it has played in almost every concert since its debut.Trampled Under FootThis is a funk piece largely created by John Paul Jones.  The beat was inspired by Stevie Wonder's “Superstition,” and the lyrics are drawn largely from Robert Johnson's “Terraplane Blues.” Jones originally created this in the soul genre, but John Bonham convinced the group to add a more funky feel. The Wanton SongMany Led Zeppelin songs have a title which does not appear in the lyrics, and this is one of those.  Jimmy Page developed the riff in 1973 and brought it to the Physical Graffiti sessions.  Page uses a backward echo on this, where the echo appears before the note.  It was played during the 1975 tour but was dropped from the setlist thereafter, making it perhaps a deeper cut.  Houses of the HolyThis track is one of the unreleased tracks from previous sessions.  It was intended as the title track from their fifth album, but was considered too similar to other songs on the album and was dropped.  Led Zeppelin never played this song live.   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Movin' On Up (Theme from the television series “The Jeffersons”) This sitcom was a spinoff from “All In the Family” which got its start in January 1975.  STAFF PICKS:Any Major Dude Will Tell You by Steely DanLynch kicks off the staff picks with the B-side from “Rikki Don't Lose That Number.” Donald Fagen says that the inspiration was hearing a lot of people using the term “dude” after they moved to L.A., finding the phrase funny and deciding to include it in a song.  The idea is that times will get better, and hope is around the corner.Cat's In the Cradle by Harry ChapinRob brings us a folk rock story about a father who finds the tables turned.  He didn't have time for his son as he was growing up, and his son doesn't have time for his father when he is older.  The lyrics were inspired by a poem written by Chapin's wife regarding her first husband's strained relationship with his father.Angie Baby by Helen ReddyWayne features another storytelling song, this one with some spookiness.  Angie is a girl of questionable sanity who lives in her own world at home with her parents.  When a neighborhood boy decides to make advances on her when her parents are gone, Angie causes him to disappear into the music of her radio…  It was a number 1 hit song.Changes by David BowieBruce closes out the staff picks with a song that largely flopped when originally released as a single in 1971.  Bowie's “Hunky Dory” album did not do well until it got a second look after his 1972 release “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.”  It was re-released in 1975 as a single and went to number 1 in the UK.   INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Bron-Yr-Aur by Led ZeppelinWe close out with some double dipping from Physical Graffiti for this acoustic instrumental.   Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?” NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device. Here comes that Santa Ana wind again, blowing us right into the slightly skewed world of Steely Dan.It was never a question whether Strong Songs would do a Steely Dan episode, it was more a question of which song to focus on. In the end, Kirk chose "Babylon Sisters," a culmination of the band's incredible 1970s run that exemplifies Fagen and Becker's brand of pristine, laser-focused groove. Jimmy Vivino Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson It had been six long, 4 1/2 COVID years since last I sat down with my old friend, multi-instrumentalist, producer, composer, and long-time musical director for Conan O'Brien, Jimmy Vivino. It was like coming home. Almost the same age, we have many shared (unbeknownst to us at the time) memories of concerts at The Filmore East, Watkins Glen, the glory daze of the NY club scene, and a bounty of mutual friends. Talk about being in one's comfort zone. Jimmy talked growing up in New Jersey, his carpenter trumpet-playing father, his talented brothers, Jerry and Floyd, and how they began and evolved - he talked Conan, Laura Nyro, Phoebe Snow, Donald Fagen, John Sebastian, Al Kooper, Levon Helm, The Allman Brothers, Albert King, Tom Petty, Prince, Bruno Mars, Michael McDonald, Johnny Johnson, Hubert Sumlin, Stevie Wonder, Muddy Waters, Pinetop Perkins, John Sebastian, The Dead, The Band, Harry Shearer, Paul Shaffer, whom he credits as his mentor, Leader of the Pack, Broadway, Ronnie Spector, Felix Cavaliere, The Rascals, Frankie Valli, Slash, Sly Stone, The J. Geils Band, Elvis Costello, and the James Brown and Friends Set Fire To The Soul with Aretha, Robert Palmer, and Joe Cocker, that he orchestrated. Incredible stories all around, and this special is available on YouTube… wow - Snuff and I just watched it. Spectacular. We talked about COVID and Jimmy joining Canned Heat, currently touring with them, and Bill Murray, as well as still doing shows with Will Lee and The Fab Faux. His first all-original album, Gonna Be 2 of Those Days, is due to drop in February, signed copies are available for pre-sale at jimmyvmusic.com He treated us to a track to close the show. Life is busy, busy. busy… just the way Jimmy likes it. And so do we who follow and adore him. I so enjoyed every second of this. Jimmy needs to write a book and get all these stories down. He knows and has played with everyone. Such fun! Today's episode is on "Yacht Rock: A Dockumentary", a 2024 MAX/Music Box documentary about the smooth sounds coming out of LA's finest music studios in the late 70s & early 80s. We're joined by the director of the film, Garret Price. Garret previously joined us to discuss his 2021 documentary "Woodstock 99: Peace, Love and Rage". As you'll hear, this one is way mellower but no less compelling. The movie features luminaries from the era such as Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, Christopher Cross, various members of Toto, and (sort of) Steely Dan's Donald Fagen, as well as contemporary musicians who are inspired by the genre. Also included are the creators of the mid-2000s Yacht Rock webseries that ended up defining "Yacht Rock" as a thing. Garret tells us how the movie came together thanks to a surprising pair of roommates, shares the real story behind the Fagen encounter, and happily engages in the time-honored "What is Yacht Rock?" debate. In this episode we welcome Fast Show legend Simon Day to downtown Hammersmith and ask him about his musical passions and the immortal Life Of Rock With Brian Pern. We start with our guest's misspent youth in south-east London, where he frequently saw bands such as Dr. Feelgood and local lads Squeeze and even fronted his own punk combo Simon & the Virgins. We hear about his early days on the standup circuit and his close associations with Vic Reeves, Bob Mortimer and the gang that coalesced around The Fast Show. From there we discuss the genesis of his "prog'n'roll" alter ego Brian Pern and his affectionate lampooning of Peter Gabriel. Clips from a 2003 audio interview with Steely Dan prompt an in-depth conversation about Donald Fagen and the late Walter Becker. During this, Simon tells us how he first fell for the arch duo and we collectively compare notes on some of the group's greatest songs and albums. After a brief mention of featured writer Dorian Lynskey and his new book Everything Must Go, Mark quotes from newly-added library pieces about Mötley Crüe's Nikki Sixx and Beatles hairdresser Leslie Cavendish before Jasper talks us out with his thoughts on M. People's Heather Small and a particularly cantankerous Van Morrison. Many thanks to special guest Simon Day. Pieces discussed: Genesis Doing The Foxtrot, Genesis: No "Pale" Imitation, Seventies prog rockers Genesis are back, but are they welcomed?, All Apologies: Brian Pern, Steely Dan audio, Wayne Robins on the RBP podcast, Pete Seeger, Kendrick Lamar, Why do pop stars fall for conspiracy theories?, Dorian Lynskey on the RBP podcast, Mötley Crüe, Beatles hairdresser Leslie Cavendish, Elvis, The King Remembered — An oral history, Heather Small: Proud, Los Campesinos!, and A duel with Van Morrison.

Bill Gibson began playing music at the age of seven. He found his passion for music when his father Ed Gibson, an architect by trade but a jazz drummer in his own right, began taking him to see such greats as The Count Basie Orchestra, The Duke Ellington Orchestra, and The Buddy Rich Big Band. Inspired by big band jazz and rock & roll styles, Bill got his first drum kit at age fourteen, and began playing drums with local bands the following year. He soon became the drummer for Sound Hole and played his first tour in 1974 backing up Van Morrison. Bill is a founding member of Huey Lewis and the News, which he and other members of Sound Hole and the band Clover formed in 1979. 33 years later, the band is still going strong and has enjoyed enormous success with over 30 million albums sold worldwide, 19 top ten hits including "The Power of Love", "Stuck With You", and "Hip To Be Square", and multiple awards and award nominations. Donald Fagen. The Nightfly.Tras media vida junto a Steely Dan, Donald Fagen grabó un disco en solitario. Un disco extraño, seductor. Nocturno y algo oscuro.

A literary and visual exploration of the songs of Steely Dan. Steely Dan's songs are exercises in fictional world-building. No one else in the classic-rock canon has conjured a more vivid cast of rogues and heroes, creeps and schmucks, lovers and dreamers and cold-blooded operators--or imbued their characters with so much humanity. Pulling from history, lived experience, pulp fiction, the lore of the counterculture, and their own darkly comic imaginations, Donald Fagen and Walter Becker summoned protagonists who seemed like fully formed people with complicated pasts, scars they don't talk about, delusions and desires and memories they can't shake. From Rikki to Dr. Wu, Hoops McCann to Kid Charlemagne, Franny from NYU to the Woolly Man without a Face, every name is a locked-room mystery, beguiling listeners and earning the band an exceptionally passionate and ever-growing cult fandom. Quantum Criminals: Ramblers, Wild Gamblers, and Other Sole Survivors from the Songs of Steely Dan (U Texas Press, 2023) presents the world of Steely Dan as it has never been seen, much less heard. Artist Joan LeMay has crafted lively, color-saturated images of her favorite characters from the Daniverse to accompany writer Alex Pappademas's explorations of the famous and obscure songs that inspired each painting, in short essays full of cultural context, wild speculation, inspired dot-connecting, and the occasional conspiracy theory. All of it is refracted through the perspectives of the characters themselves, making for a musical companion unlike any other. Funny, discerning, and visually stunning, Quantum Criminals is a singular celebration of Steely Dan's musical cosmos. Alex Pappademas is the author of Keanu Reeves: Most Triumphant--The Movies & Meaning of an Irrepressible Icon and the writer and host of the acclaimed podcast The Big Hit Show. Alex Pappademas and Joan LeMay, "Quantum Criminals": Exploring Steely Dan Characters and Artistic CollaborationIn this episode of "Unlocking Your World of Creativity," host Mark Stinson delves into the fascinating world of storytelling, art, music, and character development with author Alex Pappademas and artist Joan LeMay, the creative duo behind the book "Quantum Criminals: Ramblers Wild Gamblers. Another Soul Survivors from the Songs of Steely Dan." The book explores the rich tapestry of characters found within the songs of the legendary band Steely Dan.The conversation begins with Alex discussing the genesis of the book and how Joan's idea to base it around characters transformed the project. Their collaboration, guided by a massive spreadsheet of 160 characters created by Joan, allowed them to explore the extensive catalog of Steely Dan's characters and bring them to life in a unique way. Alex highlights how the character-based approach enhanced the writing process, adding depth and humanity to their portrayal of the band's history.Joan discusses her artistic process and how her lifelong fandom of Steely Dan influenced her visual interpretations of the characters. With a penchant for high chroma and psychedelic aesthetics, her vibrant paintings captured the essence of the colorful and sometimes enigmatic characters. The collaborative nature of the project brought a new dynamic to both Alex and Joan's creative processes, providing support, encouragement, and a fresh perspective. The interview also delves into the research behind the characters and the extensive exploration undertaken by Alex. While the band members, Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, didn't provide much information about the characters, Alex's research led him down intriguing rabbit holes, uncovering fascinating connections and stories. He shares examples such as the inspiration behind "Kid Charlemagne" and the story of Sayoko Yamaguchi, the model featured on the cover of Steely Dan's album "Asia."Throughout the conversation, the evolution of Steely Dan's characters over time is explored, with Alex noting that the reunion albums allowed for a clearer understanding of the individual songwriting contributions of Fagen and Becker. The duo's sensibility shifts and a touch of sentimentality emerges in their later work, which can be heard in songs like "Shame About Me."Highlight Quotes:· "I think that was what was exciting about it because I, this started out, I was going to write a Steely Dan book before Joan came into the picture. But the idea to base it around characters was an idea that Joan had." - Alex Pappademas· "Joan made a giant spreadsheet. At the beginning of this process that had 160 characters on it, which is like a Robert Altman level of character." - Alex Pappademas· "I prior to diving into this I've always painted in a very high chroma way. All of these are gush paintings that are 18 by 24 or nine by 12. And I I've always. I've always painted slightly psychedelic in, in terms of pallet. So it it was an easy, it was an easy application of that natural tendency here, for sure." - Joan LeMay· "So I when this project started to I had thought about I, I'd start, I had started. Making a fanzine called Danze, where I was going to depict every single named character in the entire Steely Dan universe." - Joan LeMay· "I think for years, Several friends and I who are Steely Dan fans have been like, oh, they're such a major dude. As a, as, just as a colloquial way to refer to somebody referring to the song,...
