GROWING UP IN OKLAHOMA, I vividly remember summer days that were so hot you didn't want to do ANYTHING except lie in the shade and drink sweet tea! This week, we launch our "Dog Days of Summer" series, where we'll explore the conditions that cause us to become apathetic in our faith and how to overcome the temptation to call it quits. From the Front Porch to the Front Lines! The heartbeat of Church on the Rock is to help people discover how they can LOVE God and LOVE one another, LIVE with passion, purpose and freedom, and LEAD others to this same experience in Jesus. I am always intrigued by people who can't seem to color inside the lines. Most of us are law-abiding citizens. We might get a traffic ticket occasionally or march in protest against a law or action we think is wrong, but we usually play by the rules. Then there are those who skirt the law at every opportunity. The worst of these are sociopaths, and I've written about several who were serial killers. John Martin III committed at least one despicable crime, but most of the time, he just seemed to follow a difficult path through life, doing things many of us would describe as “crazy.” He likely had a mental illness, and I doubt many were surprised when he met with a violent end. This week we had the exciting opportunity to travel to Anchorage, Alaska, to participate in the Fifth Annual Alaska Sustainable Energy Conference. The conference convenes researchers, industry leaders, entrepreneurs, policymakers, and investors to discuss the future of energy development, infrastructure, technology, and resource leadership across Alaska and the broader global energy landscape. We had the honor of moderating a discussion featuring Governor Mike Dunleavy and Chairman of the National Energy Dominance Council and U.S. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum. Given Alaska's strategic importance across energy, critical minerals, infrastructure, and geopolitics, it was a fascinating and timely discussion. In our conversation, Governor Dunleavy emphasizes the dramatically improved partnership between the federal government and the State of Alaska under the current Administration, contrasting it with prior years when Alaska faced significant federal restrictions on development. Drawing on their experiences leading major energy-producing states, Governor Dunleavy and Secretary Burgum reflect on the operational, economic, and political realities of energy development and infrastructure investment. They walk us through renewed lease sale activity, rising investor interest in Alaska, and the broader role Alaska could play in supporting U.S. energy dominance and Western Hemisphere energy security. We explore the increasing importance of affordable, reliable, and secure energy in attracting manufacturing, AI infrastructure, and industrial investment, as well as the rapidly growing electricity demand tied to data centers and advanced technologies. Secretary Burgum provides an overview of the Administration's efforts to accelerate permitting reform and reduce regulatory bottlenecks, including examples of projects receiving approvals in weeks rather than years. We touch on domestic mining and critical mineral development, LNG exports, the role of nuclear, hydro, geothermal, and natural gas in future energy systems, and the Administration's broader push to accelerate infrastructure and resource development across the United States. We cover the transformational potential of the Alaska LNG project, the growing energy needs of U.S. allies across Asia, the importance of codifying regulatory and permitting reforms for long-term investment certainty, and why Governor Dunleavy and Secretary Burgum both believe Alaska is entering a new “golden age” of development and opportunity. Thank you to Governor Dunleavy for inviting us and to Secretary Burgum for joining us for a thoughtful discussion on the future of Alaska, energy, and American economic development and energy security. About Governor Mike DunleavyGovernor Mike Dunleavy arrived in Alaska in 1983 as a young man looking for opportunity, and he found it. His first job was working in a logging camp in Southeast Alaska. Later on, Governor Dunleavy earned his teacher's certificate, and then a Master of Education degree from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. He spent nearly two decades in northwest Arctic communities working as a teacher, principal, and superintendent. Governor Dunleavy and his family moved to Wasilla in 2004, where he owned an educational consulting firm and worked on several statewide education projects. Dunleavy served on the Mat-Su Borough School Board, with two years as Board President, and then as a state senator for five years. Dunleavy was first elected Governor in 2018 and then again in 2022. Governor Dunleavy has kept the health of the economy and jobs at the forefront of his Administration's policy setting initiatives and has been a true champion for the Alaskan business community. Governor Dunleavy's wife Rose is from the Kobuk River Valley community of Noorvik. Together, they have three children who were raised in both rural and urban Alaska. Governor Dunleavy is focused on moving Alaska forward and believes that our greatest years are yet to come if we work together to maximize our potential. About Secretary Doug BurgumDoug Burgum is the 55th Secretary of the U.S. Department of the Interior. Raised in Arthur, North Dakota, Burgum worked as a chimney sweep to help pay his way through North Dakota State University before earning an MBA from Stanford University. In 1983, Doug literally “bet the farm” to provide seed capital for a software startup called Great Plains. Doug led Great Plains through a successful IPO and grew the company to over 2,000 employees before its acquisition by Microsoft. Burgum remained with Microsoft for six years as the Senior Vice President of Business Solutions. Doug later co-founded Arthur Ventures and served as chairman for international software companies including Atlassian, SuccessFactors, and as a board member for Avalara. In 2016, Burgum was elected to serve as North Dakota's 33rd Governor. In 2020, he was re-elected in a landslide. Under his leadership, North Dakota passed the largest tax cut in state history and dramatically reduced red tape. As a testament to Burgum's leadership, Forbes named him “America's Best Entrepreneurial Governor.” During his tenure, North Dakota experienced the highest growth in real GDP and had the lowest unemployment rate in the country. Burgum has three adult children. He is married to Kathryn Burgum, a nationally recognized advocate for addiction recovery. We hope you enjoy today's discussion as much as we did. This certainly won't be our last trip to Alaska. Our best to you all!
LIFE CAN SOMETIMES BE A MESS... and if you are a mother, you know this is especially true. The reality is that throughout life, we find ourselves in messy situations, whether that's with our relationships, our parenting, our finances, etc. So the question is not, "How do I avoid messy situations?" but rather, "How do I find meaning in those messy moments, and what does the Lord want to speak to me through them?” That is what we will be discussing this week as we dive into Genesis 29, unpacking how we find meaning in the mess. Air Force One touched down in Anchorage Tuesday evening, bringing President Donald Trump to Alaska for a brief refueling stop at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport before he continues on to China for a summit with President Xi Jinping. Alaska lawmakers are sounding an alarm with days left in the legislative session: the state is heading toward an energy crisis they can’t stop, and they need Washington’s help. The prosecution has dismissed the remaining charge against a Wasilla teen in the fatal April shooting of their best friend, according to court records — one day after a grand jury declined to indict the 17-year-old on a series of felony charges, including manslaughter.
Have you ever set a lofty goal, reached it, only to discover that it did not satisfy you in the way you were sure it would? Over the years, I have discovered the real reason I often feel so apathetic when I've finally arrived. It is because the destination, the project, or the product was never the right goal to begin with. Rather, what they produce is what matters. Connection, experiences, and perspective are what we truly long for. When we realize this, we begin to set very different goals… much like Nehemiah did. The heartbeat of Church on the Rock is to help people discover how they can LOVE God and LOVE one another, LIVE with passion, purpose, and freedom, and LEAD others to this same experience in Jesus. Is God calling you to take a step of faith for your one more? Who will be sitting in that one more seat that you've been praying about? So often, when you start making progress towards what God is calling you to, the mockers start making noise. In the book of Nehemiah, we see that Nehemiah sees his position, possessions, and talents as gifts from God to be used for the good of others. One thing is for sure, when God gives the word to move… pack light and travel fast. You will be surprised to see how God works through your faithfulness. Evan Davis didn't take a traditional path to becoming an Alaska pilot—he fought through addiction, FAA scrutiny, and personal demons to get there. His story proves that your past doesn't define your future, and that the aviation community has room for second chances when you're willing to do the hard work. Evan Davis was eight hours into his flight training when his AME asked the question that changed everything: have you ever struggled with alcohol? He told the truth — and the FAA grounded him before he ever soloed. More than a decade later, Evan is a PC-12 medevac captain based in Wasilla, Alaska, flying out of Kotzebue two weeks a month, north of the Arctic Circle. In this conversation, he walks Justin through the whole arc: getting honest on his medical application, a Valentine's Day slip two months into sobriety, the HIMS program, and the year of breathalyzers, AA meetings, and flight simulator hours that rebuilt his life. From there, it's the flying story pilots come here for — a 90-hour trip into the Frank Church, a Cessna 182 used to commute to work, a chance resume drop in Homer that turned into a job offer, and eventually Bettles, the Brooks Range, and medevac work on the western coast of Alaska. Evan talks honestly about the weather that moves differently above the Arctic Circle, why saying "no" is the most important skill in the cockpit, what four months of darkness does to you, and why the pilots who make it in Alaska are almost always the ones who can live with other humans in a village for two weeks at a stretch. A story about addiction, second chances, and what it actually takes to fly in one of the last wild places left.Happy Flying, Justin
When God puts a burden in our heart, it often can be our defining moment. For Nehemiah, it certainly was. When he found out that Jerusalem was still in ruins, and the people were in despair, it gripped him. It shifted something in his heart. He was given a burden for his city and his people. But what we will discover this week is how God turned that burden into a breakthrough for Nehemiah and the people of Israel. Five families on Marilyn Circle outside of Wasilla continued to navigate high floodwaters Friday as the Mat-Su Borough said it stopped pumping and does not plan to continue further assistance at the moment. Artemis II’s astronauts returned from the moon with a dramatic splashdown in the Pacific on Friday to close out humanity’s first lunar voyage in more than half a century. State troopers who fatally shot and killed a 24-year-old Fairbanks man on New Year’s Day will face no criminal charges, Alaska prosecutors announced, after an independent review determined they were legally justified in their use of deadly force.

“Are we there yet?" What would it feel like to have no homeland, no final place for your feet to rest, no safe harbor in a hostile world? For the early followers of Jesus, as well as many around the world today, this is their reality. They are exiles. They are wanderers. They are outcasts. They are just like Jesus was. They were headed home… and so are we. The journey is just a little farther than we'd like, but it's worth every struggle and every step. A jury has found an Anchorage man guilty of second-degree murder in the 2019 killing of Oscar Garcia over a $550 drug debt, but acquitted him of the more serious charge of first-degree murder and a separate kidnapping charge. A 22-year-old Wasilla man who was convicted of shooting and killing his mother and brother in 2016 pleaded not guilty in a new murder case involving an Anchorage teen from 2023. Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, speaks on oil prices, homeland security funding, and military strikes in Iran.
Some residents of the Denali Borough who’ve been trapped in their homes by heavy snowfall for weeks were finally freed this weekend after State DOT plows were able to reach them at the request of the borough. A Palmer grand jury has indicted a Wasilla man in the 2023 killing of an Anchorage teenager whose remains were discovered last year in the Mat-Su, according to Alaska State Troopers. A woman was found dead in a car Thursday afternoon, according to the Anchorage Police Department.
I don't know if you had any heroes growing up, but I did, and I'll never forget the day I watched his reputation go down the drain…literally! I was six years old and we had just moved to Oklahoma. We were staying at a local hotel, and my sister and I had gotten into a fight (Most certainly her fault). The next thing I knew, she had taken my Spider-Man action figure, ran to the bathroom, thrown him in the toilet and flushed him. I arrived in the bathroom just in time to see him swirl down the drain. I was shocked and devastated not only that my sister had done this, but that Spider-Man was apparently incapable of rescuing himself. He had been beaten by a toilet bowl! But in all seriousness, the Hebrews have some major heroes that they look back at in awe and wonder. The problem is this, from a biblical perspective, there is only one hero of the story. And in case you haven't figured it out at this point in our series, Jesus is a better hero! A Lake Superior tribe wants a court to halt construction of a Canadian energy firm’s $450 million plan to reroute an oil and gas pipeline around its reservation in northern Wisconsin. As Danielle Kaeding reports, the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa asked a court last week to review a decision that upheld state permits for Enbridge’s Line 5 relocation project. The Bad River tribe is challenging a recent decision by an administrative law judge that upheld wetlands and stormwater construction permits for Enbridge’s Line 5 reroute. Attorneys representing the tribe also filed a motion to put construction on hold until an Iron County judge hears their case. The tribe's chair, Elizabeth Arbuckle, said in a statement that the Bad River watershed is not an oil pipeline corridor, and the tribe must protect its homeland. An Enbridge spokesperson said it would be unreasonable to halt construction following the judge’s decision and years of state review. Enbridge has said state permits contain extensive environmental protections and restoration plans. The company says construction would not cause significant harm to water quality or wetlands. The Bad River tribe disputes that. The project would involve blasting and drilling to install the pipeline. The Line 5 reroute would cross close to 200 waterways and more than 100 acres of wetlands. Enbridge has said it would create 700 jobs during construction. (Photo: Murphy Woodhouse / Mountain West News Bureau) Declining snowpack is affecting tribal agriculture and traditional food systems across the West. A new webinar series is helping Indigenous communities adapt. For the Mountain West News Bureau, Daniel Spaulding has more. Across the region, snowpack is below average heading into spring runoff. That has major implications for tribal producers who rely on snowmelt for irrigation, livestock, and traditional foods. The Native Resilience Project is a four-year effort to build resilience in tribal agriculture. This year, the project evolved to address the ongoing snow drought. Dr. Kyle Bocinsky is a partner on the project and the Director of Climate Extension at the Montana Climate Office. “It’s going to be variable across communities, but I think the biggest takeaway is just that what we’re seeing right now is, at least for the last 25 years, a historically low snowpack situation. And it’s going to tax a lot of our systems.” The webinars cover snow conditions, drought assistance programs, drought planning, and new pathways for tribes to directly request federal disaster declarations. There are three more webinars in the series, which ends in May. Hannah Bissett with her family sheltering in place in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. (Courtesy Hannah Bissett) An Alaska Native family from Wasilla is sheltering in place outside Puerto Vallarta. Rhonda McBride from our flagship station KNBA has more. The family became stranded along with about 500 other tourists at their resort, after the Mexican military killed a notorious drug lord known as “El Mencho”. Other cartel members died and a wave of violence followed. Suspected cartel members torched businesses, buses, and cars in retaliation for the killings. Hannah Bissett says she and her mother, grandmother, ten-year-old brother, and a family friend had just arrived in Mexico. “We had like a half a day of normalcy, and as we were going to bed, things started turning upside down and got pretty intense pretty quickly.” Bissett said she and her family have not left their resort. All the stores around them, along with the hotel's restaurants, are closed. “Assuming things are closed, still, like the major grocery stores nearby, or even the local markets, in the next three or four days, we're gonna run out of food.” Bissett says the resort has been serving an evening buffet meal once a day. Overall, Bissett says she and her family are staying calm yet vigilant – encouraged that traffic seems to be moving again. Bissett says she received a personal phone call from U.S. Rep. Nick Begich (R-AK) and calls from the offices of U.S. Sens. Lisa Murkowski and Dan Sullivan. All said they are ready to assist if necessary. Bissett is a former reporter at KNBA and currently a graduate student at the University of Alaska Anchorage. Get National Native News delivered to your inbox daily. I personally know people who will faint at the sight of blood. In fact, I've discovered that lots of people have strong aversions to blood. It may surprise you to discover that God clearly states that He isn't interested in the blood from sacrifices. Which raises some really big questions about why so many sacrifices were required in the Old Testament… This week, across all locations, I have the privilege of unpacking the most important day in the entire year for the nation of Israel. (FYl...It just so happens to be one of the bloodiest day of the year as well!) In this episode, we explore real experiences that went far beyond “spiritual healing”: encounters with predatory spirits, looping insanity, shapeshifting shamans, and the terrifying aftermath that left people questioning their sanity, their safety, and their place in the world. These aren't your typical retreat stories. These are the ones nobody wants to talk about. From clown phobia turned hellscape to Tetris-brain thought loops, Tim Burton creatures crawling from the void, and a chilling cultural warning about who Ayahuasca may truly be meant for—these firsthand accounts paint a picture of a medicine that can heal… or completely unravel you. The One & The Only, for 1,500 years, one man and only one man was able to do the one thing everyone in Israel needed...make them right with God by making atonement for their sins. God could not have been more clear about their need for a mediator, a high priest, that could approach God on behalf of the people. The problem was this, every high priest was also a sinner in need of a savior, and as a result every high priest had died... SO FAR. Moses was the man! He was the man who led them out of Egypt, the man who met with God face to face, the man who received the commandments, the man who gave them the Torah. That's the theme of today's episode, where our storytellers share experiences that they cannot explain, making for some truly strange and mysterious listening. Folks welcome back to yet another TFD episode. This week's episode dives deep into some fascinating short form true paranormal encounters, glitch-in-the-matrix moments, and unexplainable brushes with the supernatural that will leave you questioning everything you think you know about the other side. From a grieving family experiencing a full-body ghostly apparition, to a teen who hears a blood-curdling scream while home alone, to a hiker guided through the wilderness by what can only be described as a spirit bear intervention, these stories come straight from real people who swear what they witnessed was no hallucination. That being said, this episode is ALSO quite heavy on the tangents, as we explore the wildly gay side of Stranger Things, two very different Repo Man movies, and Christian's unabashedly feminist beliefs. Jesus is not just another heavenly messenger… He's far greater! Hebrews gives us insight into angels and the importance of their role in the biblical narrative. Still, even they do not compare to the radiance of God's glory, the One who holds the universe together, and the Savior who knows us by name. Join us as we discover why Jesus truly is better than the angels and how that changes everything for us today. A 46-year-old Alaska cardiologist charged with possessing child sex abuse material was found dead inside his burned Wasilla home just one day after his release on bond, as investigators continue to determine how the fire and his death occurred. A Christmas Day drive through the Sierra nearly ends in disaster when an SUV spins out on icy Highway 50 and hangs over a steep drop, until an Air Force staff sergeant rushes in and helps save the trapped couple. A quick-thinking Long Island seventh grader escaped through a window and called 911 after realizing a burglar had broken into his home, leading police to arrest the suspect within minutes. When winter settles in and the world grows quiet, strange things start to stir. In this year's TFD Christmas Special, we're sharing true ghost stories and creepy encounters to haunt your holiday and prove they aren't always filled with Christmas cheer. You'll hear about a haunted apartment in Ohio where a ghost learned to coexist with its tenants, a chilling brush with the so-called Death Angel (or Mothman as Christian calls it), and heartfelt tales of spirits who return when the season feels loneliest. Sharing ghost stories is the annual Christmas tradition round these parts—where fireside storytelling meets the unexplained, and endless tangents. Perfect for fans of true paranormal experiences, christmas ghost stories, and eerie holiday tales that linger long after the lights go out. So pour some nog, dim the lights, and settle in for a Christmas podcast that's equal parts strange, tragic, wonder and whimsey (okay maybe not whimsey, but it's a good time either way). Merry Christmas from The Freaky Deaky—where even the ghosts come home for the holidays.
Photo: Josh Engle, manager and peer support specialist at True North Recovery in Wasilla, gives out cookies as part of homeless outreach efforts in Anchorage on Tuesday, November 25, 2025. (Matt Faubion / Alaska Public Media) For people experiencing addition, it can help to talk to someone who has been through recovery themselves. Peer support specialists offer a different kind of support from therapists or psychiatrists. And in Alaska, there are state certifications for peer support roles, including a special track for Indigenous people with lived experience in recovery. Alaska Public Media's Rachel Cassandra has more on peer-to-peer care in the state. Josh Engle is bundled up on one of the first really cold days in October. He walks along a forest path to do outreach in an encampment in Anchorage. He approaches a man in a weathered coat. “How long you been out here on the streets?” “Too long. Yeah. Yeah.” Several tents and makeshift structures lean together. “You connected with any resources?” Engle is a manager and peer support specialist at True North Recovery – and one of his aims today is to help guide people into recovery. It's a path Engle knows well because he's in long-term recovery himself. Now he supports people in ways that go well beyond what a more traditional therapist or psychiatrist can do. He may text with clients outside business hours, help them find work or get connected with benefits – anything that supports them in a way that might lead to recovery. “I personally, really enjoy being able to connect with them on a personal level of someone that has walked their path.” When patients interact with workers with lived experience, research shows it can aid recovery and can reduce healthcare costs. Aaron Surma is Executive Director of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) in Juneau, which runs training for peer support. And Surma experiences mental illness himself. He says psychiatrists and mental health professionals play an important role in supporting recovery and treatment, but there is a strong power difference. “You’re in a small room, you’re making intense eye contact, and the dynamic is that you have the expert and the person who needs help.” Surma says he was arrested multiple times during high school and was court ordered to go to Alcoholics and Narcotics Anonymous meetings. He says hearing peers in those groups was awesome, but things felt different when talking with his formal providers. “When I was a teenager, I was lighting stuff on fire and buying garbage bags of weed. So then to go into a small room and talk to somebody who you know, like, imagine the counselor from “South Park” who’s saying ‘Drugs are bad, Mkay?’ And it’s a million miles from what you know.” He says it's easier for peers to bridge those gaps in early recovery. Peer support specialists speak the language of addiction and mental illness and also understand the more traditional language of behavioral health professionals. Seeds of Eden, which offers addiction recovery services and community-based behavioral health services, recently received a $30,000 grant from the South Dakota Community Foundation. The grant will help the organization’s work to provide sober living, peer support, care coordination, and case management, including a project to build a recovery housing facility on the Standing Rock Reservation on the South Dakota side. The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe straddles the South Dakota and North Dakota border. Isaiah Keller is one of the co-founders of Seeds of Eden. He says they're already secured a home, which is being remodel to offer future services. “The house that we have been remodeling is about 90% complete. So, a small portion of the funds that were awarded will go to finish that project, that house and to make it livable and to make it functional.” Keller says Seeds of Eden was designed to help fill a gap when it comes to addiction recovery services, and he says the group realized there was a need for assistance within tribal communities. He says they've been working closely with the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, Native American board members, and Native advocates. “We’ve partnered with a really good ally and advocate. And her name is Bobbi Jamerson. She’s the chairwoman of the Bear Soldier District on the South Dakota side of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. And she has been advocating and promoting recovery and community involvement. We’re at a point right now where we feel like we have some great traction and some great movement.” Keller says they would like to expand services across South Dakota and beyond. Some of these tales come from childhood bedrooms, others from drug-induced altered states, and some from ordinary homes where the unexplainable simply walked in uninvited. ----- TIME STAMPS: 0:00 - Coming Up: Shadow People! 1:04 - Intro 2:01 - Thirst Quenched Via The Power of HALFDAY 2:57 - Been A Sad Couple of Weeks 5:28 - Fresh FRIGHTLINE Merch 6:34 - STORY: Shadow At The End of the Bunkbeds 12:28 - End of the Open Mind Era 15:20 - Christian's Never Seen The Santa Claus? 16:45 - Invoking Creed 18:34 - Returning to the Story… 21:43 - STORY: The Lizard Shadow 26:30 - Trolls Scare Christian 28:00 - Shoutout Morgan Lauren 29:30 - Sweet Dreams / Easter Eggs 30:00 - Busch Gardens Sheikra Roller Coaster 31:00 - STORY: Cold Hum of the TV 38:53 - Baby Hitler 40:00 - Why Demons Don't Go After Christian 46:05 - PTSD Mom Texts 46:30 - Pick Your Own Adventure 48:00 - STORY: Shadow People and M*th / Shoutout shadowpeople.org 53:30 - Can We Pierce The Veil While Under The Influence? 57:06 - Outro ____________________________________________ +PRODUCERS: Eric Long, Daniel Heng, Anthony M, Marlene Olmos +BECOME A PRODUCER: http://bit.ly/3WZ3xTg +BUY A $9 SHOUT-OUT: https://holler.baby/thefreakydeaky The Twilight Zone meets Mystery Science Theatre 3000 meets an uncomfortable Thanksgiving dinner conversation with your in-laws.
