Bill Graham had two legendary theaters, the Fillmore West in San Francisco and the Fillmore East in New York City. He introduced and cultivated so many of the major stars of the era including Santana, Jefferson Airplane, Moby Grape, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Country Joe and the Fish, and the Grateful Dead on the west coast, and Blood Sweat & Tears, the Allman Brothers and The Band on the east coast.Sid Bernstein was the promoter who was responsible for The Beatles performing at Shea Stadium in New York City in 1965. He also brought the Stones, the Kinks, the Moody Blues and Herman's Hermits to America. Will Healey is a pianist and composer who plays multiple genres of music including classical, jazz and hip hop. In 2023 he won the Leonard Bernstein Prize from the ASCAP Foundation. He has performed at venues like Jazz at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. His arranging credits include works for the New York Philharmonic and the Albany Symphony. He is the artistic director and founder of ShoutHouse, a group of hip-hop, jazz, and classical musicians. As a pianist, he has performed solo recitals in the United States and abroad. He's the author of several books, including the poetry collection “Silver”, which was a finalist for the National Book Award, and “I Just Want Them To Remember Me: Black Baseball In America”. He is also the author of the poetry collections The Ground, Heaven, Living Weapon and When Blackness Rhymes With Blackness. He's also a sportswriter and he wrote The Circuit: A Tennis Odyssey about the 2017 pro tour, and a book about Roberto Clemente. He is the recipient of an Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He's the poetry editor of “The New Republic”. And he is a Professor of English at Stony Brook University. Tamar Sagiv is an Israeli-born cellist and composer. Her work explores themes of memory, identity, and emotional resonance. She is the recipient of the Zubin Mehta Certificate of Honour, in addition to an award from the America-Israel Cultural Foundation. She's performed as a soloist with orchestras in Israel and Germany, and at venues including Lincoln Center and Alice Tully Hall. Llewellyn Sanchez-Werner is a remarkable Rock Star concert pianist. He was a child prodigy. He began studying piano at 2. His First recital was at 4. He began college at 5. And he began performing regularly with orchestras at 6. At 16 he performed at the Kennedy Center in an Inauguration Concert for President Obama. He was the first American soloist to perform with the Iraqi National Symphony Orchestra in Baghdad, raising money for the Children's Cancer Hospital. Tom Sleigh is a multiple award winning poet, dramatist and essayist. He's written eleven books of poetry. His most recent is “The King's Touch”, which won the Paterson Poetry Prize. His other works include “Army Cats”, winner of the John Updike Award, “Space Walk”, winner of the Kingsley Tufts Award, and “Far Side Of The Earth”, which won an Academy Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. His poems and prose have appeared in The New Yorker, American Poetry Review, Yale Review and The Village Voice. He is a Professor (Emeritus) at Hunter College. And he has also worked as a journalist in Syria, Lebanon, Somalia, Kenya, Iraq, and Libya. Lora Logic is a British punk and post-punk musician. In 1977, when she was 16, she became the saxophonist in Poly Styrene's seminal English punk band, X-Ray Spex. They had a hit with “Oh Bondage! Up Yours!”. She went on to form Essential Logic, a post-punk band with duelling saxophones that released one album in 1979. 43 years later she released a second Essential Logic album together with a box set of her back catalogue. Essential Logic plays a post-punk mix of punk, jazz, reggae and funk. Her life took a detour in the ‘80s when she joined a Krishna community, became a mother, and dropped out of music for 25 years. Rachel Flowers is an extraordinary musician. She's been blind practically since birth but that hasn't held her back one bit. She is an amazing multi-instrumentalist. Her genres include classical, jazz, rock and pop. She plays piano, keyboards, flute, guitar, bass, saxophone and something called the Chapman Stick. She's performed with Arturo Sandoval, “Skunk” Baxter, Dweezil Zappa, Rik Wakeman of Yes and Burt Bacharach among others. She was mentored by Greg Lake and Keith Emerson of ELP and by Herbie Hancock. She's won numerous awards as a pianist and a flutist. Welcome to Part 2 of the two-part Special Episode introducing my new release, “MA PETITE FLEUR STRING QUARTET”. This work transforms my jazz ballad into a lush classical string quartet piece. The work has been praised by a host of Classical Music Stars, all of whom are listed below. In Part 1 yesterday we listened to this new work. In Part 2 today we're going to introduce the incredible musicians who brought this piece to life.David Shenton is the genius arranger behind this work. David is an English pianist, violinist, composer and arranger. He started playing the violin at age 7 and he's composed hundreds of works from small piano pieces to full-length operas. Violinist Katie Thomas is a soloist, chamber musician, studio violinist and concert-mistress. She's played on Grammy winning albums and also recorded with artists like Rosanne Cash, The O'Jays, Jimmy Fallon and the animation series “Dragons”. Violinist Erica Dicker works in a wide variety of musical settings in both notated and improvised music. She is a member of the electro-acoustic trio Vaster Than Empires. She is also a founding member of the horn-trio Kylwyria. And she's known for her work with composer and multi-instrumentalist Anthony Braxton.J.J. Johnson has been the violist at Radio City Music Hall. His Broadway musical experience has included On The Town, Cats, Fiddler On The Roof, An American In Paris, Wicked, My Fair Lady, and Sunset Boulevard. He has also appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman. Dave Eggar is a Rock Star cellist who recently was a guest on the podcast. He's a 5x Grammy nominee. He's worked with Paul Simon, John Legend, Norah Jones, Foreigner, Josh Groban and Train. Brook Speltz is the acclaimed cellist of the internationally renowned Escher String Quartet and an artist of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. He's performed as a soloist, chamber musician, and recitalist throughout the world. He's the First Prize winner of the Ima Hogg Competition. He has performed as a soloist with many orchestras, and he's toured with the cello rock band Break of Reality, whose video of the Game of Thrones theme has 28 million views on YouTube. Lauren Ellis is a terrific drummer and composer from halfway around the world in Wellington, New Zealand, now living in Los Angeles. She's worked with Peter Erskine, at USC's Music School. She plays with groups as diverse as the LA Philharmonic and with Seth Macfarlane. She writes commissioned works for jazz ensembles in the US and in New Zealand.
